Never forget this journey for the rest of my life!!! Kanami and Miku say welcome and say than you to see them. This band is nicest of the world and talented.

    These ladies are amazing!...The story of how they came together...the hard work they have put in to getting where they are...Their personal charm as individuals that together are just pure joy. I have never known a band like them...It may of cost me a small fortune importing their music from Japan...But they are worth it to me...I have not heard a bad song/track by them....even when they weren't writing their early stuff...like "Real Existance"...great track..great MV...awesome LIVE..and only their second MV so I believe...a fav of mine....They cover many style's in their armoury...keeping things interesting and catchy and just plain AWESOME!...Love these ladies. Kanami is miku's guitar teacher. Miku didn't play guitar in 2013 when she formed the band. From the 50's thru today, heard alot of music & i think band-maid is the best rock band going.
    If u haven't gotten to my 2nd favorite, The Warning, check out "money" (official performance video) & "disciple" (official video) for starters. Thnx.

    Thanks for this excellent reaction to an exceptional band. I really appreciate these informed reflections from someone who obviously knows what he is talking about. Band-Maid is my favorite band since 7 years already, which is quite remarkable for me as I easily get bored when it comes to music. BM somehow doesn't manage to bore me even after many years of listening to them. And their chemistry together is unbeatable and probably beside great musicianship a reason of the never ending quality of their creative output.

    Kanami often throws in a bit of other styles / influences, Puzzle has a bit of Angus Young and The Edge for example and yet she always sounds distinctly Kanami, probably the most versatile guitar player I've ever heard. One of the great joys of Band Maid to me is I can listen to a song at least four times concentrating on one element vocals, lead, bass or drums and each of them is always brilliant. None of them slack on any track, there is always something interesting going on.

      As a lifelong Rush fan, to me, Kanami Tono is the new Alex Lifeson - and that’s a massive compliment. She has picked up his mantle of combined virtuosity with great versatility, feel, innovation and emotion he is known for across his 50 year career. She’s that rare rock player & musician who not only has the chops, but knows how to weave it into something interesting but also immediate, accessible and powerful. And she’s only getting better and better. With each new album or release, she takes it up a notch - And she brings Miku and the band along with her. Phenomenal!

    Great Reaction & Review! I believe their a few currently active bands like Nightwish, Glim Spanky and most of all of Band-Maid that are carrying the torch and keeping Rock/Hard Rock/Metal alive. Personally I believe Band-Maid is possibly the most important band in that endeavor. They are all exceptional instrumentalist that have demonstrated the ability to forge interestingly creative music that incorporates the best of Hard Rock/Metal/Punk/Funk/Pop to form a unique yet familiar sound that is catchy with a unique signature of their own.
    This band has shown to be very prolific producing well over 100 tracks over a seven year time span with the same original lineup. Their tracks have evolved from a straight forward hard hitting Rock/Metal flavor to a more progressive slant. Their music holds a wide variety of styles with a common signature that is distinctly Band-Maid. It is this quality that requires one to digest a minimum of 5 tracks to truly appreciate the greatness of this band.
    As an old school musician in my mid-50's I have been one who has been cynical of anything new rivaling any of the great music of the past. That was until I became exposed to Band-Maid. These Maidens single handedly reignited my love for the music that inspired me as a kid. I urge everyone to sample this band starting from their early work to their current material. I believe this is journey that will prove to be easy journey to embark. Once on that road it will become evident how great this band is. One cannot help but appreciate this band through that progression.
    I have been a hard critic of most current music and I rarely throw out praise so easily but I feel compelled to do so with Band-Maid. I was first exposed to Band-Maid a few years back by an old bandmate of mine who I had lost contact with and have not spoken to for years. He felt compelled to seek me out to turn me on to BAND-MAID. He knows that Im not an easy person to impress when it came to music yet he knew Band-Maid would do the trick. I found it odd that he would be so fired up about a band that he just had to expose me to them.
    Judging from his intial description of five Japanese girls playing Hard Rock/Metal music with vocals prominently in Japanese I thought he was joking with me. I soon realized from his excitement he was being complete earnest with me especially since I have not spoken to him for years. I feel very greatful he thought of me to share this band with. In the past I would have never given such a band a chance. I was also fortunate to see them live in LA last time they made an appearance in the states. A show that cemented my affinity for Band-Maid.
    I feel fortunate they are coming to San Diego this time I figured I would need to see them in LA again. I snagged up tickets as soon as they were available. I have not felt this excited about a show since I was in my youth. When I saw them last time I had not known them as well as I do now. I now know what to expect and cannot wait till October. I honestly can say this one rare band that sounds better live than the studio.
    My opinion is echoed by others with far greater credentials than myself such as Jimmy Page and producer Tony Visconti. Jimmy Page saw Band-Maid perform live in Tokyo in 2016 as one of the acts at a Classic Rock award ceremony. He felt compelled to meet the band in particular their drummer Akane. He sought to her out to express to her how impressive drumming skills were. Cannot think of a better endorsement then that of a legend such as Jimmy Page who has seen his fair share of drummers from both his studio musician days to being in a band with the legendary drummer Jon Bonham.
    And the Veteran music producer Tony Visconti, who worked with David Bowie and T. Rex Sought to work with Band-Maid which led to him producing a track Called "The Dragon Cries". A track featured on their previous album Conquerer. He has been quoted as saying: "love the originality of BAND-MAID. It was like a dream come true to meet them. During recording Saiki and Miku sang from eight-hours straight. I don’t know many artists with that kind of stamina, I was taken back by their professionalism. They definitely met my expectations". If you are a true hard rock fan "The Dragons Cries" will definitely hit a chord with you and worth checking out.

    ive been listening to rock since the late 60's, and these ladies have done nothing but impress me, they will use any genre of rock plus blues and jazz riffs, and even step back and forth across the line to metal, to get the sound that Kanami thinks makes the song sound right, and that is the band maid sound, it seems everyone has trouble nailing down their genre, they call themselves hard rock instead of metal but i believe thats because in Japan they would get a lot less radio air time as a metal band, i live in minnesota but i will be traveling to Chicago to see them when they tour the states, good reaction, have a great day

    Band Maid conserve Saiki's voice throughout a concert very carefully, they space out instrumentals and throw on songs where Miku is the solo singer as well as Miku has her MC moments where she interacts with the crowd best shown with her Magic Spell Time. all these spots rest Saiki's voice

    Hi there, excellent reaction. You are correct. Their music is influenced by many kinds of rock music from the 1970s to new metal- similar but different. The genre is BAND MAID. You were also correct about the chemistry these ladies have together, both when composing the music and live. Generally- musical arrangements by Kanami- Lead guitar, Lyrics by Miku- Guitar and Vocals. They are touring the states in October this year.

    What you said about Domination being a perfect hook-in song for unfamiliar radio listeners applies to (except for the language the lyrics are primarily in) at least half of B-M's catalog, and to several common radio formats, not just classic rock or "alternative" (whatever that means today or has ever meant as far as radio formats go).

    BAND MAID is coming to New Jersey. 4000 seat venue. Last I heard they are not sold out in that venue but they are in all others.
    Some bands that are mentioned as "reminds me of" by other reviewers - depending on the song they are listening to:
    Paramore, Rise Against, Guns n Roses, Motorhead, Buckethead, Pantera, Metalica
    Interviewer: Why should people listen to Band-Maid?
    MIKU “We’re not a pop idol group! Don’t judge us on how we look. We want to blow you away with our heavy rock sound.”
    Interviewer: Maid outfits aren’t exactly rock ‘n’ roll. What is your ultimate heavy metal costume?
    “Now Band-Maid’s outfits are part of rock n roll, so we pick these!”
    KANAMI TONO - LEAD GUITAR - Plays classical piano since the age of 3. Writes the music on Acoustic Guitar or Piano MISA and AKANE contribute to the music.
    Miku Kobato - RHYTHM GUITAR - Originated the band and brought all the members together. Has only been playing guitar for about 7 years. Was the lead singer but took a back seat voluntarily!
    Misa - BASS GUITAR - Switches from pick to slap in the same song. - Played electric guitar in other bands before switching to Bass.
    Akane Hirose - DRUMS - Jimmy Page was impressed enough to meet her back stage. - Plays trumpet and DJ's on the side.
    Saiki - VOCALS - Plays classical piano from an early age.

    Great review! These musicians are at the top of their game. I know not many people have heard of Band-Maid but that’s about to change. I heard them for the first time 3 months ago and now I’m wearing Band-Maid T-shirts and going to a sold out concert this Fall in Seattle. The Neptune theater only holds 900 people so it’s going to be up close melt your face off rock n roll! I see what you are saying about familiarity because though their music is complex, I hear chords that AC/DC and Metallica have put into our heads growing up. Here’s the difference though, only a few of their songs sound alike, all of their other songs sound different from one another giving them an arsenal of diversity I haven’t seen any other band pull off. I can’t wait to see them live 10/12/22

    Just love this group. Live just looks so fun... and the energy. This modern, innovative take of a well-known sound is just so satisfying. They just slide seamlessly from a metal beat into a catchy pop rock chorus to get you singing along, back to a harder beat like the punk rockers of old, face melting solos that fit in with the song instead of taking over the song. I suggest, for some good old groove rock. Checkout their song "Manners", maybe the MV this time, "until we get a higher quality live video of "Manners"..

    I absolutely love ❤️ these ladies. Last year when I was 54 I went to Guitar 🎸 Center and bought my first Bass because MISA made it look like so much fun. I haven't regretted that purchase and enjoy it as often as possible.
    The best first song for them, I think it would be The Dragon Cries. It's one of the few songs that they do that is 95% sung in English. Domination,Freedom, and Play would be fantastic follow ups behind The Dragon Cries.
    They got some screen time in a Movie that was released last September called Kate. It stars Woody Harrelson. The two songs of theirs that were featured is BLOOMING, and CHOOSE ME. They appear as themselves performing in a concert. It's on Netflix.
    As always, stay happy healthy and safe. Enjoy 👍

Both are MVs and of course, both are awesome! You COULD do the live version of "Manners", but that comes coupled with another song called "Black Hole" (it's a twofer). If you choose the "Manners/Black Hole" video, pause in the middle (after "Manners"), put on a helmet, a face shield, a fire retadent suit, and maybe some shoulder pads. Remember, Safety First! Live in New Jersey? After the tour-schedule was released one thing was obvious. The market was big, so a few of the venues was bumped up and upgraded. Also they started to look at more venues and added one in Chicago and not at least in New Jersey where they will hold their biggest gig ever for 4000! Welcome aboard, Eric. You are embarking on (along with many others - 140 million YT views!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

    BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (118 songs with their latest album, “Unseen World” and new single drops), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
    Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
    Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/видео.html Their later songs from albums Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Sense, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
    But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis!
    And many songs are represented with over 40 well produced music videos. ruclips.net/user/BANDMAID
    Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html)
     ZEPP 2018
     Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 (The last two are on bandmaidprime.tokyo)
    And some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues:
     Taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: ruclips.net/video/__1th7ctgMo/видео.html
     And by JOSER8845 in LA: ruclips.net/video/usWZvlGGDSs/видео.html.
    If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
    Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.
    For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid Members:
    Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 28 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
    Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 30 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
    Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 30 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
    Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 31 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
    MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 29 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
    Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.

    This old Metal/rock head loves Band Maid. They reminds me of the garage bands that came out in the late 60s thru the 1970 & 80s. Stay with live performances , this band is tight and loves what they do & they have a huge catalogue. So I Concur on all that you said including Jersey boys hustling & scoring tickets for a sold out anything. I thought I heard a “ Jursey” accent with a slight twang of Tennessee mix in! I FREAKING CONCUR HERE! Rock On Stay Safe!🙏👍🤘🤘🤘

    It's obvious you know what you're talking about. :) Your summary that these ladies combine quite a few genres and characteristics here pretty much hits the nail on the head. That's just one of their trademarks. Every single one of these outstanding ladies, without exception, is an equally strong pillar in the construct of this band. No ego gets in the way of that, and each one gets the time to shine. Maybe that's why, for many, they are the best the rock genre has seen and heard in a very, very long time. And who am I to disagree. :)
    Greetings from the German Maidiacs division.

But to chose a top 5 or even a top 10.....man!....tough....as everytime you listen to a track..it's your fav..no matter which...Because each track has it merit's you'll love.

    BAND-MAID is basically a jazz band playing stadium rock music in small venues. I hope that they can reschedule the even that would have put them in Budokan. They are, quite simply, the best live band in the world. ...and, all bow down in the Sacred Presence of TinyHat-san. (BTW, you also need to check out SCANDAL live...the #1 girl band in Japan for the past 16 years.)

  • @ShikataGaNai100
    @ShikataGaNai100 2 года назад +1

    BAND-MAID Trivia: Akane's first instrument was the trombone, which she still plays; Kanami's first instrument was piano...she plays keyboards on BAND-MAID tracks (she also has a university degree in economics); MISA started out as a horn player and plays on-stage barefoot; Miku did not play guitar when the band formed...she fired herself as lead singer and hired Saiki (who, BTW, plays guitar right-handed, despite being left-handed). Saiki had throat problems requring surgery early in her career...and Akane had postural problems early on that caused her back problems. MISA (5'8") and Akane (5'6") are extremely tall for Japanese women and MISA is a bit self-conscious about her height. Miku is 5' tall (quite tall for a pigeon) and Kanami is 5'1". All 5 members of the band sing (yes, even MISA). Kanami writes the music and Miku (Mika Noguchi) writes the lyrics, often with help from Saiki. One of the great mysteries of BAND-MAID is "what is MISA's family name?" You might want to check out some of their interviews; they are very funny and very friendly. Before the pandemic, they toured heavily...playing 110 gigs in one year. Also, BAND-MAID is more popular overseas than in Japan...which I find very odd. The same is true of SCANDAL, but they are popular worldwide, and hugely famous in Japan.

    I believe all the upcoming live USA shows are sold out but they have put on extra dates. Great your brother knows someone, hopefully you will get tickets. The Band Maid story is really a tribute to Miku. Her determination and choosing Kanami, from her profile in a music magazine, has led to the band we have today. In their earlier days, thanks to the RUclips views of Thrill, their first MV, Band Maid, were better known outside Japan than at home. Kanami, demonstrates in this song Domination, her song writing ability. Thank you for your thoughts and views.

    I guess "Wonderland" to show a totally different side and restraint in the way they compose or "Real Existence" or "Play" to see them go totally nuts lol. There's a ton of choices... but Live Line Cube, Zepp and Studio Coast gigs are always the best.
    Loved the video Eric.

    Your perspective as a veteran radio DJ is something I haven't heard before. The ideas around how to introduce new music to a demographic that hasn't heard it before and what sort of song will draw people in and why was really interesting. Thanks!
    Also, here's a quick primer on Japanese pronunciation. It's actually very consistent, especially the vowels. There are a couple of tricks and exceptions here and there but nothing you need to worry about when it comes to regular names and stuff. Also, when I say the pronunciation of vowels is consistent, I mean it never changes, ever. Unlike English, they sound the same no matter the context (regional accents aside, anyway).
    a = ah
    i = ee
    u = ooh
    e = eh
    o = oh
    And that's it. From there you can extrapolate the consonants. Ka Ki Ku Ke Ko, Ma Mi Mu Me Mo, and so on. You find some exceptions in Sa Shi Tsu Se So, and Ta Chi Tsu Te To.
    And there you have it! Thanks again for your insights, and I hope you continue to enjoy the fantastic music that's coming out of Japan these days.

    I’m amazed at Mike’s rhythm playing . Seeing as how when she formed the band in 2012 I think . That’s when she realized that they need a stronger voice for their vocals . So kanami started teaching her how to play guitar in 2013. If you check out some of the earlier videos you will see miku playing only a little bit . But now today she reminds me of Malcom young and how he play’s. Your right they are by far the best band in hard rock in the last 30 years .

    I never threw this out into the ether before, but to me, the familiarity of this song (and more so their song Dice, and somewhat Play) comes from the Guns N Roses song You could be Mine (terminator 2?). The bass tone, with a pick, so heavy yet crisp at the same time and absolutely driving hard thick heavy, but steady, not too fast, still groove
    Scored my tix for TLA Philly show, no prob. But resellers were already ready , knowing the fan base is rabid, floor, 45; resale 5002$! It is one of the smaller venues this go-round, dying to know if that’s the price for the 1001th ticket!
    Oh, and yes they let singer/leader/founder/conceiver/entertainer Miku have a guitar spotlight, but it’s definitely Kanami on lead. She was lucky tho, she taught Miku guitar from scratch (AFTer the band had started), so Miku is perfectly molded to play the parts that Kanami writes! (Kanami leadguit/keys, is by far their main songwriter , once she proved she was surpassing their studio support writers after year 3 or so?, 2016?)

    A couple of performance details. The get together at the back, was the girls making faces at the drummer to try to throw her off. At 6.54 at the end of the guitar dual, Miku the rhythm guitarist backs off the riser and lands flat on her arse. You can see her pop up in front of the drummer two seconds later, and join back in, without missing a beat.
