Pausing or not pausing is not an issue, as long as something of substance is added when people pause. I never get bored when you pause the video because you always add something of value, whether it be something informative or just giving your opinion. You deliver your points in a very approachable and concise way, so it never feels like you're wasting my time. I've watched your Warning reactions and now this one, and you've done a consistently great job.

@@PhilZeroThe do, actually do chill…occasionally. 😂 The basically do every type of song.
Oh, first, I thought I’d mention your dog is awesome, btw. 😃
The Maids do every kind of song. 🎶
And, did you see that they played a collaboration song with The Warning at their joint concert last Wednesday!! Yup!! Called “Show Them”. They kept the structure pretty straightforward but has some cool elements from the sneaked video a Warning crew mistakenly leaked online (it’s gone now 🤷🏻‍♂️)
But the Maids have a few chill songs. Check out their most recent release
      - “Bestie” - OMV - which is actually a collaboration with guitarist Mike Einzinger of INCUBUS.
      Then other songs are
      - “Daydreaming” - OMV
      - “Wonderland” - OLV
      - “Memorable” - OMV
      - “About Us” - OLV
But the song you really want to see & hear is their 10th Anniversary Okyuji show closer
      - “Endless Story” - OLV - you’ll see their hearts and the love they have for their fans.
Another all out rocker extravagant performance like “Domination” but with even better solos…🤯
      - “Hate?” - OLV - from 10th Anniversary show
      Really enjoy your videos!
Take care and Rock On 🤘🏼🔥🎸🥁🎤🎹🎧🎼🌏🇯🇵🇲🇽🇨🇦😎✌🏼

I've seen hundreds of reactions to this song and was not expecting to learn something new but I was wrong. Great job!!! The thing with BAND-MAID is that they play a wide range of styles, they have even done a couple of acoustic concerts, they also have an alter-ego called BAND-MAIKO that mixes in traditional Japanese instruments. They have songs that sound like they came from every decade from the '70s until now. Their complexity ranges from punk to progressive. Thanks for checking them out.

The little “thrash off” between the two guitarists is a bit of fun. When Miku sacked herself as lead singer she didn’t want to just stand there with the microphone so she hung a guitar round her neck, even though she couldn’t play it. Kaname has taught her over the years and Miku is now pretty good, even having her own signature Zemaitis guitar. This little battle has Kaname egging Miku on to play faster and faster while keeping up with her until Miku can’t do any more. Miku then falls backwards and Kaname raises her hand showing she’s still the best. You’ll also notice the band gathered in front of the drummer pulling faces at her to try and put her off. They are great musicians, but they have a lot of fun as well, something that seems to have been lost in other parts of the music world!

Hi Phil! Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.
Fans of Band-Maid call ourselves Maidiacs. The band calls their fans Masters and Princesses (from maid café culture)
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

    Nice to meet you, Phil.
Thanks for your reaction to the BAND-MAID song. I hope this performance was a great encounter for you.
Since I worked in the Japanese music industry and concert hall was my workplace, I have probably experienced more gigs than the average music fan. And now that I have retired from my job, there is a particular reason why I went to 21 BAND-MAID gigs (they call them お給仕OKYUJI) in the last year alone.
It's because their gigs get better and better with each passing show. Even the next day's gig changes the setlist, and no two gigs are ever the same. Even the MC's are different and laugh out loud hilarious every time.
In other words, every moment is a one-time-only chemical reaction, all of which become unforgettable moments in a lifetime. After every OKYUJI, I think that I will never be able to experience anything better, only to have that thought be completely overturned at the next OKYUJI. LOL
So, the moment OKYUJI is over, I find myself wanting to go back for the next one, and eagerly awaiting that day to come.
Their playing is great, of course, but I bet you'll love their songs. Almost all of their repertoire is filled with gems. 🥰
The five members' sounds are meticulously intertwined, complex, dense, and yet catchy ―― a novel musicality that combines these seemingly contradictory elements into one brilliantly executed song(s) and performance(s) that will surely captivate you, I believe. ☝

Saiki isn't classically trained, she started singing as a child in Karaoke bars with her Mums encouragement and aspired to be an idol like her heroine Namie Amuro but when she got the call to join Band Maid she went for it and has developed into a phenomenal front woman. She had vocal chord polyp surgery in 2017 caused by the intense workload and since has been well taken care of by a combination of having a vocal coach, managing their live sets to give her breaks, a healthy lifestyle and fitness regime.

@@PhilZero I'm from the British Invasion, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix era. I've always loved electric guitars, don't play them, but love them, the heavier the better. In the 90's, I fell back to Classic Rock and listened to a lot of songs I knew well. I'm not into rap, unless it's RATM. I got into RUclips as a way to see old video performances of bands like Vanilla Fudge, which I had never seen live. I started watching reaction videos in order to feel like I was sharing the music with friends. I saw Jinjer Pisces and immediately jumped on their music. What I'll call it is speed metal - great musicianship but fairly repetitive. I play harmonica and have been in many jam sessions, and speed metal reminded me of that. I stumbled across Liliac doing Enter Sandman and was into their music but then they went glam and I looked around for other young bands. That's how I found The Warning. Money was the one that hooked me (the supporting Foo Fighters one). Their whole story grabbed me and I've been going way back and deep. I watched some Baby Metal but the girls are not musicians. I have seen a lot of reactors who are into Band Maid and the other J Rock and K Pop bands, which the members of The Warning are also into. This video was, to me, a speed metal video - great musicianship, great voice and more like a jam session. It does not replace the basic things I get from The Warning - song structure, stage performance, Dany and Pau's "it factor," and Ale's cool. I would love to see The Warning do more solos and stretch out their song times and I think that will come in time. Since they've been at it so long and it's so well documented, we forget that they truly did not enter the mainstream away from RUclips until they signed with Lava and honed their skills during the pandemic. I am interested to see what The Warning learns in Japan. If you watch their documentaries, you'll hear that they are always looking for something to learn and try out. That's why their songs are so varied. I'm just into their story. BTW, I'm hooked on your channel for your analysis. For example, you are the only reactor who recognized the influence of J Rock on The Warning's song structure.

In the past, Domination (Live) has been the song to introduce people to Band-Maid. They also have two fantastic instrumentals - Onset (Live) and From Now On (Official Music Video). That being said, in November 2023, they did 10th Anniversary Concert at Yokohama Arena that produced multiple amazing performances that they released as official music videos. From that set, Hate (Live) has become one of the most recommended songs from Band-Maid. Personally, I am a huge fan of their performance of "endless story" which was the finale for the show. It is a love song that they transformed into a love song for their fans, especially by adding a new verse. It really showcases Saiki's singing ability.
As other posters mentioned, Saiki had vocal surgery (about 1.5 years prior to this 2020 recording of Domination). In the following years, her voice has become even stronger.
Band-Maid has a huge catalog of many amazing songs. One other that I highly recommend checking out, that doesn't get as much attention as some of their others, is Puzzle. They have an official live video for it (electric), but in 2018 they played it acoustic in a concert at Zepp Tokyo. The acoustic version is haunting and one of my favorite Band-Maid songs.
P.S. Just wait till you find out about Band-Maiko.

Awesome info on the song structure! That is all thanks to Kanami (lead guitar and main composer) who is classically trained on the piano and learned guitar in high school. She is the "mastermind" behind 99% of their music with heavy collaboration from Misa (bass), Akane (drums), Miku (rhythm guitar/BU vocals) and Saiki (lead vocals). A truly inventive and enjoyable music experience with Band Maid. While everything they do sounds "familiar" they are able to make it their own.

Many Japanese rock groups have world-class technique for playing each instrument. Recently, Japanese music from the 1980s and after, including rock, has become popular around the world. World-famous guitarist Marty Friedman says that this is because Japanese music has complex chord progressions that are different from the chord progressions of typical Western music. Band Maid is themed after maid cafe's in japan, so they name their fans based on that culture, and the terms they use are "Masters and Princesses". The fanbase itself, at least from my experience, calls themselves pretty much exclusively "Maidiacs". We are absolutely passionate and knowledgeable about the ladies as you'll read. We can get very snippy if we think they're being disrespected, but are very friendly otherwise. I think you'll be just fine.
On the lead singer's training. Saiki grew up singing karaoke and had some lessons, but early in the life of the band she developed polyps and had to have them surgically removed. She worked with a vocal coach very heavily after that to improve her technique and vocal power, so she probably is now classically trained, but definitely wasn't when they started. This is from several years ago now, she's even better today.
I've listened to easily hundreds of reactions to this song, and I learned something new today. Thank you, this was a great reaction.

If you want to go further down the pigeon hole I would recommend Hate? (live) or Don't You Tell Me (live) if you want cool breakdowns. Warning and Unleash if you like cool music videos. Daydreaming and Endless Story if you like ballads. Choose Me, Play, Puzzle if you live grooves. If you want instrumentals check out From Now On, Onset and Without Holding Back.

Great breakdown of this great song! I've watched many reactions to this track and yours is top 10. 👍👍 My favorite parts are seeing the small pigeon (Miku-red rose) flap her wings franticly along with her guitar sensei, Kanami, just before the drum solo bit. The way they brought it down from the solos to the softer parts is a Band Maid staple, they always let you come up for a breath before they push you back under. The B-chorus has such a special feel melodically and rhythmically, reminds me of some beautifully flowing classical music, like Gustav Holst's "Jupiter". Another trademark of the Maids is "no verse same as the first", which probably covers 98% of the 130+ song catalog. 🤘

Now you get to jump "down the pigeon hole". (Inside joke for Band-Maid fans). What a wonderful musical journey it will become for you. Band-Maid defies any and all rock genres because they incorporate so many of those sounds and genres into their music (often in one song). We Maidiacs simply call their music Band-Maid Music. Their most recent "hard-rock" release is "Hate?", the official live video, from their 10th Anniversary Tour finale in Yokohama last November. It's an absolute banger that again shows off the amazing talent of MISA, their bassist, and Kanami, there lead guitarist. Beware, there will be a duel during the song. Their latest release is "Bestie", a heartfelt lyrical tribute from Miku Kobato, the bands founder, chief lyricist, and rhythm guitarist to her bandmates. The song was a collaboration with Mike Einziger of the rock band Incubus, who gave Kanami, their primary composer, the opening cord of the song and input into the overall sound of the song. "Bestie" is more of a power ballad, but again Kanami's guitar work on the song is stellar.

Welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 (Just so you know, I have a ticket to the concert by Band-Maid and The Warning on June 12 in Tokyo.) Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)
Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. Poker shark and horse racing fanatic. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed. Definitely eccentric, possibly insane.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors. A sweet, motherly woman who turns into a beast when you hand her a guitar.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Completely unflappable. Frequently snacks between songs. Has been known to sign her banana peels and throw them to the audience.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. Regards her band mates, especially Kanami and Miku, with bemused exasperation. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).
