I have been playing drums my whole life and let me tell you....most of what Akane plays, I can't even get close....most people have no idea have fast most of their songs are and how intricate the drumming is !!!!!! She IS one of the best drummers out there !!!! Period
This is where the "Hell" reference comes from. According to Akane, Kanami asked her how fast she could drum. Akane said around 190 bpm. Then Kanami went off and wrote "Black Hole" that peaks at 220 bpm! So Akane goes and writes the drum patterns for the track. She wrote 7, for the band to choose which one. She labelled them: 1. Easy 2. Comfortable 3. Normal 4. Possible if I work hard 5. Tough 6. Painfull 7. Hell Akane said "Of course, the band chose Hell"!
Unfortunately, there was no live audience. It was an online concert because of this Covid. Another little thing: "Black hole" was played here for the first time. Almost nobody believed (after hearing the studio recording) that they could do it live, but they did it easily!
The online concerts that were streamed during the plague years were a fine example of how Band-Maid love their fans and missed performing live to them so streamed a concert. They did this a couple of times and, on xmas day 2021, streamed a 14 song acoustic set where the band played together and in various combinations of 2 or 3 players. The acoustic set was gorgeous and well worth viewing (there's a few songs from it on their site, including a stellar performance from Miku, Akane and MISA on the song SAYONAKIDORI). That 220 BPM final flourish on the already very fast BLACK HOLE must be exhausting but they played it as their 4th song at their Tokyo Garden concert....then followed it with another 22 songs! THE best band on Earth.
You didn't know they could play that technical? What band have you been watching? 🤣 They released an all instrumental version of the Unseen World album a while back. That would blow your mind.
Black Hole is their fastest song at 220 bpm. I love that Saiki gets wide eyed twice during the song. Iv never seen her with that facial expression or reaction before or since
If you want audio representation of black hole surrounding, this song is perfect. I wonder how nobody notice Miku's perfect triplets among all that chaos.
"Day of Maid" is the play-on phrase for May 10th, because in Japanese the number 10 can also be referenced as do (doe). So May 10th = "maid". Therefore, all Maid Cafe's celebrate this as their special day. There are several such as March 9th. This is the day that Miku will do something or make an announcement, because "Mi" and "ku" can be references to 3 and 9 or March 9th.
How they do it? Kanami makes a digital demo with basic drum and bass, and sends it to the other members. Akane makes her drum version and scores it! Akane says that she can visualize the score when she plays!!! MISA compose her part on keyboard to avoid "muscle memory", and the figures out how to play it on the bass. Miku write the lyrics, and fine tune them with Saiki. On stage they play with in ear monitors with a click track and some backing tracs. And then they just practice, and practice, and practice!
I'd really like to be a fly on the wall and watch the rehearsal process involved in this song- how long did it take to get it clean for the first time? I can only imagine that by now the band members under Kanami's guidence are so in tune, literally, with her concepts and with each other that they just know how to make things work. I can't say the word Genius enough.
Dual noodling works if they're playing basically the same thing, ala Thin Lizzy. But when you ask how, you have to remember that Kanami writes all the music and Miku writes all the words. As for the rest of the band MISA and Akane are Tokyo School of Music grads. When Kanami send them the demo it's already a song. Then they do their thing to it. Akane will often complain about Kamani's drum programing, saying, "This drum part cannot be played by a human being." So it's a good thing The Beast is Half Gorilla & Half Drum Machine. And Saiki can sing anything you throw at her. But if you like Thrash check out their song, 'Rinne'.
There are songs with lyrics co-written with Saiki and Saiki's written 2 lyrics. Even though Kanami is the main composer, Misa and Akane do their arrangement and start writing their part. That's part of their evolution.
the band has said Black Hole is a song that noone can fall behind during the song because they will never catch up.. another great song to check out is Giovanni. for an accoustic and something a little different Sayonokadori but i would sudjest hearing the full version of it also
They played Black Hole multiple times on their recent US tour. I heard one person describe the song as 4 separate solos that somehow works. Despite the technicality it still has a level of catchiness. Corallium is another genre bending technical song that is a bit chaotic at times. There isn't an MV but on their channel there is an audio only MV in the playlists. I don't know if you have reacted to From Now On yet but it is an excellent instrumental that shows off some of their technicality and more importantly their compositional ability
We didn't know if they would pull Black Hole off live, was it ever in doubt ! I liked that you talked about Miku's rhythm guitar work in both songs. She couldn't even play the guitar when Band Maid started, Kanami had to teach her and she is on record that she practices every day, Kanami also stated that Miku can strum faster than her. Without Miku's dedication Kanami would not have been able to increase the versatility of the bands compositions. During an interview with Herman Li, Kanami asked him what was the fastest song by Dragon Force and he told her he thought it was around 235bpm, she looked very thoughtful, poor Akane !!! I would suggest you react to 'Rinne' next, rumour has it that it was composed after the band heard some people say their music had gone soft ! Here's the link ruclips.net/video/CQ9dbEVgZcA/видео.html Enjoy !
Next: Giovanni! There is an instrumental MV of this song but not easily available. Someone needs to send it to you. And there is the studio version of Giovanni that has the vocals. But it is audio only. I think there is a LIVE version of Giovanni also but I've only seen it once. So, maybe someone needs to send the video to you guys as well. But Giovanni is one of the best TRACKS! It's in the same album as Manners and Black Hole. (So suggestion is react to both vocal and instrumental version, please!)
Our Maids love to rehearse and it definitely shows in these two performances. They are one very tight live band because of that love of rehearsal and live performance. This video combo always blows minds because the shock of hearing a song like Black Hole that frankly, especially after hearing the restrained perfection of Manners groove rock, that you never imagined Band-Maid could or would write a song like that. Let alone perform each of them so flawlessly and yet so passionately. It’s this video that usually instills in peoples mind, that, holy heck, the Masters & Princesses are right - this is without a doubt one of the best rock bands on the 🌎 . The lack for nothing in the same way the great bands do. They are a unique, prolific, exceptional collection of musicians creating exciting and important music at this moment in time. It’s special to be alive at the same moment as Band-Maid. They are a gift to the world of music. Take care and rock on!! 🔥🤘🏼🎸🥁🎤🎼😀✌🏼
Great reaction guys. Arent these ladies just utterly wonderful? Each memeber is so skilled in their own right but the "whiole" is even greater than the sum of the parts.
The second verse of Black Hole is possibly my favorite moment in any Band-Maid song. They took Saiki's melody from the first verse and gave it to Miku, and then had Saiki sing something completely different. And the drums are insane, of course.
After funky groovy Manners, you slam into Black Hole -- non-stop chaos and frenzy from beginning to end ... five band members each playing their frantic part, and oddly blending into one... vortex.
black hole is a experimental song ... they make it as a challenge... 220bpm for akane...... wanna try react RINNE one of the metal song.....or maybe pls try to react thier cover of duality by slipknot .... band maid do things impossible....best band ever exist
"Day of the Maid" is May 10th and is a pun. "10" in Japanese, while usually said as "Jyu", can also be read as "to" (ト pronounced "Toe" ) and To and Do are basically the same katakana "letter" just differentiated by the addition of " to mark the change of sound from a "t" to a "d", so May 10th is May-To which basically sounds like May-Doe (メイド i.e. Maid). Hence, the "Day of Maid".
Because of the pandemic lockdown the album "Unseen World" didn't get a tour. Instead the live debuts of most of the songs were in several of the streaming online lives like this one. The album was written slowly and _deliberately_ (I like that word, Chris) during 2020, from their separate locations using technology to collaborate, for their expected triumph at Budokan in February 2021. A concert that was eventually cancelled. There is not a note or lyric in this performance of "Black Hole" that isn't exactly where they meant it to be. Thanks for the reaction!
Black hole is surely their craziest song when it comes to speed and controlled chaos. Not so fast, but also really frentic, technical and progressive might be "Giovanni". I've seen quite a few people not really getting it on first listen 🙂 For acoustic, please try to find their version for "Smile", it's absolutely beautiful.
Great reaction. Thanks for stopping and rewinding to make you points. They have a lot of songs that display similar songwriting and playing skills but not as concentrated into one song. I love Black Hole but not everyone is as pleased with the technical 'chaos'. I think Kanami could write these all day long, but she keeps the fans clearly in mind. She even suggested at one point that she would omit future guitar solos if the fans preferred. They did NOT prefer!! Check out Blooming, From Now On, Different, and Influencer for a wide range of recent songs that include a variety of technical chops in composition, vocals, and both ensemble and solo playing. These are all MVs and the studio work is excellent on all four. The mixes allow everyone to punch through without sounding like a mess. I think you'll love them all.
I recommend Rinne MV as one of their heaviest songs. For having your minds blown, try "Puzzle" LiveMV (the latest one from this January will work) and then the acoustic version with just Kanami and Saiki. That combo makes it my favorite Maids song. Another good electric-acoustic duo is "Sayonakidori." Very different versions, yet both great.
In this streamed performance Black Hole was the 21st song of a 22 song set. They also debuted 5 songs that they had never performed live before from the Unseen World album. Black Hole and Manners were not debuts as they had been done live before on 2/11/21.
Nice reaction! If you look for an insanity, please try "Giovanni". Like you did for Manners, listen to the studio version with vocals first and then the instrumental version. This will make you feel like listening to all of their songs again without vocals.
Imagine being at a gig and someone shouts, “Play Black Hole by Band-Maid!” Seriously, this is one song of theirs that’s still beyond me. I don’t have the ears for it, yet. You asked for another one like this? The only other BM song that’s beyond my ability to comprehend: “Giovanni.” Just try the instrumental version. Maybe after hearing you guys break it down for me, I’ll understand what’s happening? Peace again from Ft. Pierce ✌️
Part of the Band-Maid sound is how involved MISA's bass is. When the band first started Miku couldn't play guitar, so to cover up the lack of a rhythm guitar, MISA was to fill in those areas the rhythm guitar would have been. This was the start of the Band-Maid sound. Miku would play basic chords at first and lock in to Akane's drums like a bass player normally would. Now that Miku is a very good rhythm guitar player, she still locks in with the drums, but she also fills the rhythm guitar roll, while MISA goes between holding down the rhythm and playing leads as well. This make Band-Maid unique, in my opinion very similar to the dual lead of The Outlaws or Boston. And Miku was playing her Ace's and Eights Zemaitis that she calls "Skull". And I saw this played live in Houston a few weeks back, and they played it PERFECTLY. I heard no missed notes, flubs or off key anything. They played if absolutely perfectly. And I was sitting in front of MISA and the speaker stack on her side and her bass was like HAMMERING my guts. And Akane then as in the video had a huge grin/smile on her face the entire time she played. If you don't mind doing some searching, Studio Coast's version of Moratorium is very special. But I prefer the 2019 Summer Sonic one with Kanami's Going FULL Mincho intro solo.
Guys, ASTERISM songs Dawn, Church, Rising Moon, Blaze, Gunfire, check it out....🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 Japanese Bands they played 6, 7 string guitars and 5, 6, 7 string bass and do solo's on bass.....🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Another great prog speed punk song from Band-Maid includes Different. Want your mind blown again? Listen to the studio version of Giovanni (no official video). Then follow it with the instrumental version (video but hard to find).
When are you guys going to cover Black Hole live? :) I love that song, but damn, I can't imagine playing it live. They actually had it as part of their set during their last tour that just ended.
I don't know if you read these comments after 4 months (I probably wouldn't) and I don't know if someone already answered the question, but J-LOD Live is/was a subsidy project of the Japanese government to help musicians/bands/artists who were affected by cancellations of concerts, etc, because of the lengthy COVID lockdown. Band-Maid had to cut two tracks together for a few videos because it had to be a certain length (I think 5 or 6 minutes) to be eligible.
for acoustic listen to the orginal 'puzzle' from their album then listen to the acoustic version, they changed the whole mood of the song completely, most band would just play the same song but change the guitar from electric to acoustic.
Man its late at night where I am, I thought I'd have a beer a few hours ago and maybe play a couple of BM songs ... . anyhow many, many beers and BM songs later I'm in a very happy place 😂 so all ive got to offer is - BAND-MAID what a fcken band Viva the Maids peace and love Po 👍🎼🥁🎸🎤🍻
Great reaction! Loved your commentary on this one and it's always a pleasure to see people get caught off guard by black hole. I really appreciate how you guys often comment specifically on the live performance aspects from experience. Subbed!
Boy, when Kanami finally becomes a true guitar player, she might be something (this is to all of Kanami's critics). Plus, she in the chief composer, so maybe, someday, she'll have some real success there (hello again, critics). "Genius" is a vastly overused word, but...she may actually be one.
I don't know what the true definition of the word genius might be but there is no doubt Kanami is quite intelligent. She likes to drink coffee and read books with a highlighter . . . like a college student . . . . for Fun. She has an undergraduate degree in Economics. Multi instrumentalist and a brilliant composer in addition to her beautiful voice she is the consumate professional musician!
---my, my !---how pompous. We are all so privileged that we have someone to tell us what a genius is !-----geee, woulda never known . If only we had one more Kanami in the world, and one less judge ........
@@wave8359 It's not about judgment. It's about standing up for those who deserve more than some will give them. How is my complementing her hurting you? If standing up for those you admire is improper, this world is truly as sad place.
@@chrisegbertky Well, let's go to the social standard for definitions in America, the ever-popular Webster's Dictionary. Among the definitions listed are these: "A peculiar or distinctive character or spirit...a strongly-marked capacity or attitude...a person having extraordinary intellectual or creative power. That sounds like Kanami to me.
No it's not. That's Zemaitis A24MF Aces & Eights. Totally different guitar, Zemaitis A24MF Flappy Pigeon doesn't have full Duralumin top. She's using 2 different guitars on the video, A24MF Flappy Pigeon (manners) and A24MF Aces & Eights (black hole).
When Jimmy Page saw them he asked to meet Akane the drummer. There is enough photos to prove that. What he said to her only they know but one story says he called her the reincarnation of John Bonham.
WARNING! (Your last B-M reaction) -- It's bad MANNERS to stop listening to Band-Maid because you'll feel starved for musical excellence and joy and fall into a BLACK HOLE of emptiness... probably! 😵 Thx, Chris & Sam!
Cool reaction. If you liked "Black Hole", check out "Giovanni", if you like another challenging song from the Maids. And then, go check out "Wonderland" and see how they manage to create songs so different form one to another, but with the same cohesive sound.
Akane can play trombone so they have a backing track with her doing that but I don't know for sure. If you haven't seen it yet watch NO GOD live and it will blow you away like Black Hole.
There's a dude often use words like "nothing overly impressive or technical" to describe most of their songs...I don't mind his honest opinions. It's just that music isn't always about technique. You can keep on listening to their technical or proggy stuff, but it's also nice to explore different side of them. For example, Start over : pop jazz fusion with distinctive bandmaid flavour Wonderland : jazz, blues, funk fusion with touch of prog, ethereal. Anemone : in the vein as daydreaming, but more delicate, soppy love song with 2 of the best solos by kanami Mirage : very dreamy and picturesque Matchless Gum : experimental hidden gem, react to live version from shinkiba studio Coast These are not as technical, just...very different and unique in its own light. There's never ending list of hidden gems if you're open minded. And don't forget "Moratorium". Rather oldie but goodie, I love shinkiba studio Coast live version the best.
From Now On BM MV... ruclips.net/video/a6ZSvmnkS00/видео.html -- Have Kanami sing vocals but with crazy guitar solos, over a couple of cool could-be-classic chunky grooves, except crank it over 200 bpm and complexify it a little, rotate a 16th note guitar riff over to drums and back, add a smooth bass solo so people can catch their breath near the end. It's not anything like Manners or BH, but if one could mix the spirit of the two together... Some great live versions out there but nothing with audio quality which can do it justice.
There is a similar 2 for 1 official live for songs Dice and Different. Dice is a banger rock song and Different is ... different. ruclips.net/video/h_RZwRbI1QI/видео.html Both songs also have official MVs.
Listen to Band Maid's Different (fast, progressive, anime, great vocals) For something completely different, try their alter ego Band Maiko's Gion Cho.
Great reaction! I knew when I saw the 29 minute length it was going to be a show! Loved your comments on the highly technical aspects of Black Hole. Especially the bit about there being five human beings up there, that HAVE to be in sync. Now for something completely Different... ruclips.net/video/edlLhh8qVxM/видео.html
You asked for interviews with influences on the band, this interview appeared just around an hour ago (Band-Maid is on tour right now): ruclips.net/video/9pAlLiKjKTs/видео.html
When Black Hole first came out I spent a bit of time breaking down the upending rhythm. Miku starts playing a 12/8 pattern and then the rest of the band comes in with a straight 4/4 time. With this song there is so much going on please don’t talk over it. You’re talking over some very important things.
I have been playing drums my whole life and let me tell you....most of what Akane plays, I can't even get close....most people have no idea

😁
And that's what friends are for.
Unfortunately, there was no live audience. It was an online concert because of this Covid. Another little thing: "Black hole" was played here for the first time. Almost nobody believed (after hearing the studio recording) that they could do it live, but they did it easily!
As the penultimate song of the set, should also be mentioned. #21 iirc. ❤️🔥🤘🏻
This song is in the 2023 setlist. :) There are a few fancams out there.
Guys, you have merely scratched the surface of what this band can do
The online concerts that were streamed during the plague years were a fine example of how Band-Maid love their fans and missed performing live to them so streamed a concert. Black Hole is their fastest song at 220 bpm. I love that Saiki gets wide eyed twice during the song. Iv never seen her with that facial expression or reaction before or since
Some have said she looks maniacal. I've always thought she was expressing terror.
I will just never get sick of watching musicians be blown away by my favorite band. ❣
amen!
If you want audio representation of black hole surrounding, this song is perfect. I wonder how nobody notice Miku's perfect triplets among all that chaos.
The Day of Maid: this is a Maidiac holiday, May 10th each year. It’s usually got something happening with the band, and merch.

BLACK HOLE a beautiful organized chaos.
"Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!" - Miku Kobato

Good reaction! So many reactors focus on the guitar solo in Manners and completely miss MISA’s bass solo.
こんばんは、お疲れ様です。っていうか、Band-Maid、最高ですよね!これからもリアクション動画、どんどん投稿して、世界征服に貢献してね!
Guys, ASTERISM songs Dawn, Church, Rising Moon, Blaze, Gunfire, check it out....🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Japanese Bands they played 6, 7 string guitars and 5, 6, 7 string bass and do solo's on bass.....🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
"And dual noodlers like that, that only works for so long."
And then there's Asterism and Paranoid Void
Another great prog speed punk song from Band-Maid includes Different.
Want your mind blown again? Listen to the studio version of Giovanni (no official video). Then follow it with the instrumental version (video but hard to find).
When are you guys going to cover Black Hole live? :)
I love that song, but damn, I can't imagine playing it live. They actually had it as part of their set during their last tour that just ended.
I believe Miku said it best when she said - 'yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!' ♥
Really? I thought she nailed it when she said 'Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat!' Although telling Akane how to do her job was a bit cheeky.
Great commentary--thanks! Band Maid played Black Hole pretty regularly in their US tour last month. Beautiful rock music.
the secret to how they do it is called.... Practice meets Japanese cultural strive to perfectionism.
Blackhole can only be the last song in a set. Can you believe anyone could do another song after that?
Yeah if there had been a live audience shit would have been insane!
Man its late at night where I am, I thought I'd have a beer a few hours ago and maybe play a couple of BM songs ... . anyhow many, many beers and BM songs later I'm in a very happy place 😂 so all ive got to offer is - BAND-MAID what a fcken band Viva the Maids peace and love Po 👍🎼🥁🎸🎤🍻
you should listen to the instrumental version of this song as well, it's simply GREAT!!!!!
18:39 that's band-maid doing band-maid stuff.
btw, nao kawakita of mth is the reason why the fill beast fell in love with drumming.
Dual Noodlers appearing this weekend at the Dew Drop Inn!
Great reaction! Loved your commentary on this one and it's always a pleasure to see people get caught off guard by black hole. I really appreciate how you guys often comment specifically on the live performance aspects from experience. Subbed!
Music from the mind of Mincho. Miku writes the lyrics for the band. I wonder what she thought when the music from hell showed up.
@bruceveary1758 Silly rabbit. Never respond to a troll. It is mother's milk to them.
I think you are ready for Giovanni 👍
Black Hole is astronomers national song!
You Hould react to Sayonakidori acoustic live. Such a beautiful song with Miku on lead vocal. Again something totally different.👍
Always
Ike when professionals dissect BMs songs.
19:24 That is the Zemaitis Flappy Pigeon. a limited edition created for Miku. only 50 were made
No it's not.
Wait until you listen to "Giovanni" and its twin instrumental. You will be amazed again.
When Jimmy Page saw them he asked to meet Akane the drummer. There is enough photos to prove that. What he said to her only they know but one story says he called her the reincarnation of John Bonham.
MISA MISA MISA!!!!!
I warned you
Akane can play trombone so they have a backing track with her doing that but I don't know for sure. If you haven't seen it yet watch NO GOD live and it will blow you away like Black Hole.
Has Offset Era ever heard Band Maid 's live version of Onset?
Well, you must suspect that when a song is called "Black Hole" it is something out off the chart, is a singularity....
Kanami the lead guitarist is also a good singer , in their acoustic sets she sings back up
And some leads
Misa does sometimes hold the pick in her mouth if she has a really complex slap run to do.
There's a dude often use words like "nothing overly impressive or technical" to describe most of their songs...I don't mind his honest opinions. It's just that music isn't always about technique.
You can keep on listening to their technical or proggy stuff, but it's also nice to explore different side of them.
For example,
Start over : pop jazz fusion with distinctive bandmaid flavour
Wonderland : jazz, blues, funk fusion with touch of prog, ethereal.
Anemone : in the vein as daydreaming, but more delicate, soppy love song with 2 of the best solos by kanami
Mirage : very dreamy and picturesque
Matchless Gum : experimental hidden gem, react to live version from shinkiba studio Coast
These are not as technical, just...very different and unique in its own light.
There's never ending list of hidden gems if you're open minded.
And don't forget "Moratorium". Rather oldie but goodie, I love shinkiba studio Coast live version the best.
Co co cool
From Now On BM MV... ruclips.net/video/a6ZSvmnkS00/видео.html -- Have Kanami sing vocals but with crazy guitar solos, over a couple of cool could-be-classic chunky grooves, except crank it over 200 bpm and complexify it a little, rotate a 16th note guitar riff over to drums and back, add a smooth bass solo so people can catch their breath near the end. It's not anything like Manners or BH, but if one could mix the spirit of the two together... Some great live versions out there but nothing with audio quality which can do it justice.
Where would the fun be.....if we warned you ?😏❤️🎙🎸🥁😎🤘
Chunky Funky Classic Rock to Thrash Metal. No problem.
There is a similar 2 for 1 official live for songs Dice and Different. Dice is a banger rock song and Different is ... different. ruclips.net/video/h_RZwRbI1QI/видео.html
Both songs also have official MVs.
Listen to Band Maid's Different (fast, progressive, anime, great vocals) For something completely different, try their alter ego Band Maiko's Gion Cho.
If you want some more WAO 😉 Check they some song,: Rinne MV,I still sick revenge, I'll, Corallium, Hibana, YOLO,...
Now try the MV "From Now On"
Great reaction! I knew when I saw the 29 minute length it was going to be a show! Loved your comments on the highly technical aspects of Black Hole. Especially the bit about there being five human beings up there, that HAVE to be in sync.
Now for something completely Different... ruclips.net/video/edlLhh8qVxM/видео.html
black holes are too chaotic
you want more Band-Maid?? here's my suggestion : Rinne ruclips.net/video/CQ9dbEVgZcA/видео.html
👍👍👍👍👍
Now go back to the start of black hole and watch carefully Miku hiding an evil grin....
Black Hole requires 8 or 10 listens till you hear everything that is going on .
8:30 Start reaction
Band Maid or so similar to Rush with their music.
You asked for interviews with influences on the band, this interview appeared just around an hour ago (Band-Maid is on tour right now):

😁
Black Hole thrash prog punk.
*thrash prog punk metal. 😋
@@Parker-- 👍
When Black Hole first came out I spent a bit of time breaking down the upending rhythm. Miku starts playing a 12/8 pattern and then the rest of the band comes in with a straight 4/4 time.
With this song there is so much going on please don’t talk over it. You’re talking over some very important things.
the faster the song/beat goes the more we see Akane smiling, fast must be easy for her 👌🏽
I think y'all will like No God and Giovani.
NATIONAL GIOVANNI 🕊🍌🍻☕⚾ P.S. do ya'll ever come to Daytona
