Canon RF 28-70mm - 100+ Wedding Review

- Here are my thoughts on the beautiful RF 28-70mm F2 lens from Canon. I've been using it for a couple of years, and it's been my most used piece of equipment next to my computer. I've photographed well over 100 weddings and 150 other sessions with it. This lens is big, heavy, and expensive, but other than that, it's amazing. I've used it with the Canon EOR, R6, R5, and R3 camera bodies.
It's probably one of the best, most versatile lenses I've ever used. It's sharp, can shoot in low light, and has great focus. It's sharp all the way through 28 through 70, and if you stop down past F2, it's going to sharpen up quickly. I previously used 35mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.4 lenses for Sony, Nikon, and Canon EF systems, but they don't make a 35mm lens with a low aperture or high quality for Canon yet. Until then, this will be my lens of choice for most things. I'll get creative with the 50mm f/1.2 when I want to get some bokeh or pull out an 85mm f/1.4 when I really want to get some separation. So, let's jump through some images today, and I'll show you about 180 photos from the last couple of years of my favorites and the art I've been able to create, and special moments that I've been able to document. It's going to range from families to allotments to weddings to music artists, and some business portraits.

Fantastic review - thank you. You sharing many wedding and portrait pictures of this lens on several bodies is exactly what I wanted to see. And beautiful images!
Thanks Michael! This is still my go to lens for all of my work.
Great video. Thanks for showing samples and your work is stunning. Awesome.
Thank you. Love this lens for sure.
Just got me a 28-70 this week. I’m super excited. Have heard nothing but amazing things. Yes it is heavy, yes it’s expensive… but both of those things make me feel like i have QUALITY… it’s robust and hefty in all the right ways . Especially compared to my EF 24-70 2.8 L that now just feels CHEAP in comparison. 🫨🔥
Thx for the review and time spent making the videos on this lens. Pulled the trigger and have one ordered.
Awesome. It's the best all around lens I've ever used.
Gorgeous images, and man those views are breathtaking!
Thank you. There really are some amazing places out here.
Great to see some real world examples and what awesome locations!!
Thanks! It’s pretty here for sure.
Great lens and great collection of photos you have there. You are really making the most out of this lens. I bought it when I went pro and don't regret it. Coming from 10 years of prime lens as a street photographer, this lens is amazing for my customer projects.
Thanks. It really is a wonderful do it all lens.
Amazing work and that lens is phenomenal
Thanks! It really is just an all around winner for a lens.
your images are incredible....your locations are so...(no words)!!
Thanks. It is pretty here.
superb sample shots, i just bought this lens because i am shooting a lot of motorcycle lifestyle and races.
Sick. Hit me up on Instagram. I'd love to see your work.
I love that lens! Welcome to RUclips.
It really is amazing. Thanks!
Nikon shooter. That 28-70 makes me want to invest in canon 😮 Your work is incredible ❤
Thank you:) Hopefully you Nikon shooters get more lenses soon. The new ones are looking pretty great.
Great pictures. Thanks for sharing
Thanks!
Well presented video with cracking pictures all the way through !
Thanks:)
Great shots! I've been using the 28-70 over the past couple of weeks - focal range is great but the weight is sooo heavy haha and I think the RF 85 1.2 has spoilt my expectations around sharpness (it's the best quality of lens ive ever seen or used)
Thanks. It is big but it has been my go-to lens for most everything. 85mm RF is pretty rad too.
Beautiful shots
Thanks!
Honestly, between the RF 28-70mm f/2 and RF 70-200mm f/2.8, you can shoot any/everything with just 2 lenses! 😮 Great photos! 🙌🏾🔥🔥🔥
100% thanks!
I mostly agree, although I think a wide angle zoom for vlogging and just-in-case situations is useful to have!
Except that f/2 just don't cut it sometimes indoors
Great stuff, just what we the photographers need to see :)
Thanks. It's such a great work lens.
I think that lens is what I want, but worried it wont be wide enough for shooting milky way photos. But this should work well for after game photos under Friday night lights and maybe some basketball in dim lit gyms. Thx for sharing.
Great shots btw bro! 🫶🤝🫡
Thanks!
Wow incredible pictures, I definitely aspire to reach your experience level!
Thank you. I'm always learning.
спасибо за видео. очень информативно )) а я все жду выхода canon rf 35 1.4. )) думаю он уделает по качеству этот обьектив ))
I was about to ask why the image at 3:27 was SO grainy 😲 until I saw that you shot it at ISO 10000 🤣
your edits are insane do you have some pressets or video on how do u edit
Thanks. Putting together a preset pack soon. I'll also add some videos on how I use them too.
I was hoping to see some more close-ups or mediums at 70mm for the depth and bokeh.
Anyways, I've been a prime shooter my whole professional career but I might consider taking the plunge on this. It could become a game changer.
Best zoom lens every made. So far.
Did you end up pulling the trigger? I’m on the fence. I always shoot primes as well and am wondering how it is at 70mm f2, close range … compared to 85mm prime. Because I love my 85’s so much.
@@tvieso Nope. I don't think I ever will. Like you, I love 85mm way too much and 95% of my pictures are taken on it. 70mm f/2 has nothing on 85mm f/1.4. There're situations I could use a fast zoom without carrying two bodies with primes but that inconvenience is worthwhile for the image quality.
When you say the images will look sharper on the R6 vs the R5, I thought that was the other way around. It’s my understanding that more resolution sensor pared with a lens that can support the resolution you’ll get more defined sharpness out of it compared to a lower resolution camera that isn’t able to maximize these high end lenses. With lower resolution you can hide lens flaws, or the opposite, high resolution will highlight lens flaws. Thoughts?
Correct. the lower resolution the fewer flaws you see when it comes to sharpness. The 28-70mm is super sharp all around though.
Well I don’t plan on buying this lens, I’m not even a Canon user anymore, but man do I liked your slideshow ! I aspire to become a wedding/portrait photographer and you are extraordinarily inspiring. Also the region in which you live seems to be somewhat of a cheat code! 😂 And I don’t say that to undermine your work of course.
Thanks! It sure is pretty here.
Man I can’t wait to switch from Nikon to cannon!!! I want this lens with and R6
My go to for most all of my work these days.
Outstanding pictures, nice! I have every single primelense from 14 to 135mm, but on events I hate it to permanently switch between them, having them all in my big bag, loosing time, often switching lenses every 30 seconds. everytime the danger the lense will fall down (happened 2 times), getting dust in it...This lense would be the perfect solution for everything. main cam with this lense and second cam with perhaps 10-20mm and a third 85mm 1.2 in the bag for some extrem bokeh shots and GO.
It really is an amazing lens.
I think I will buy it for next Events. thanks for this great video! @@ThePhotographerGuy
Love my Lens... my Combo's are 28-70mm 2.0, 85mm 1.4 and 135L 2.0
Rad. Find me on instagram so I can check out your work.
The RF change is well worth the original frustration.
Have you shot the Canon RF 15-35 F2.8? How do you compare the lens at similar focal lengths? Thanks!
I've only used it once and decided to buy the Rokinon 14mm.
Do you usually shoot with this or the primes for weddings? Or shoot two bodies, one with this and one with a prime. Interested to hear your thoughts.
I always have a second body as a backup. For ceremonies I have a 70-200 on my left side. For portraits I have a GFX 100s on left. 28-70 is always on my right. I've had every camera i've ever owned (Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fuji, Leica) freeze up at one point for no reason, so for important moments I always have two cameras.
I have the same lenses. Rf 28-70 f2 and Rf 50 f1.2 I hope they make and 24mm f1.2 L
An RF 24mm and 35mm would be great.
Hey PG. it’s a special wow lenses for certain. I call it a niche lens, with a niche look ( hey I’m a newbie, not a pro ) that pros would look for pro work. I don’t think it’s a lens or look for all occasions or pocketbooks ! 😅. After fighting off the GAS syndrome that You Tube is soo good at promoting, I think the cheaper non Al Canon lenses can produce a more casual, less clinical look with a unique charm all their own. Just like yours does for your requirements. Am I wrong ? Thanks.😊 Your work is stellar…Very inspiring.
Thanks! Use this lens for 80-90% of my work. It's pretty much amazing.
Bravo
Thanks:)
Where in the world is the photo taken at 6:00 ? Utterly stunning.
Just outside of Bend, Oregon in the summer. Beautiful place.
👏👏👏
Thanks
I'm watching your videos on a large 4k screen and all your photo samples look really soft. I know it's not the 28-70 because I own that lens and it's crazy sharp. So I'm assuming your video export setting are wrong when you export your videos. If you use the RUclips recommended settings it's ok for causal videos but if you are doing lens reviews and want to show the quality of the images a lens can produce you need to export at a bit rate of 30+. Hope that helps.
I'm not seeing the softness that you are. The video also looks tack sharp.
@@pbuehner Strange I'm not seeing it on my end. I have a stream set to 4k. Maybe it's some kind of glitch or something.
Interesting. Some images are higher res than others. It's a mix of R6, R3 and R5 images. Not sure if thats why. It's a quicktime scree recording on an LG 5k monitor. Not sure why it would be soft though.
Looks good to me. Photos dont need to be clinical. Usability at f2 seems pretty damn good. I would never shoot wide open for a group
Beautiful work!
Which presets do you use? 😍
A mix of Candi Version 6, Mastin Labs, and VSCO from years ago.
@@ThePhotographerGuywhich ones from Mastin Labs?
@@enrico8730 Oh man. Probably a lot of them have Mastin parts in them since they were from the last few years. Most likely just the HSL from Portra or something. the rest is all my own tone curve and adjustments.
@@ThePhotographerGuy I feel ya. At some point it becomes one big blur and hard to remember of course each edited pic haha thanks for the info tho!
Hi Ely: have you ever tried this lens on the GFX? Thanks
I wish that would work. Currently you can only adapt DSLR lenses.
Do shoot with a flash or just adjust ISO based on lighting conditions?
I only use flash on the dance floor. (1000 ISO, Flash at the lowest power, shutter around 50-125 depending on ambient lights) Headshots I just use godox video lights.
@@ThePhotographerGuy thanks for letting me know. I’ve noticed a lot of weddings photographers use flash, so I found it interesting that you use a lot of ambient light. I’ve relied a lot on flash, but you’ve inspired me to try using more available light instead. Great lens and video by the way.
@@Zarozzie I will also set up some Godox ML60 Bi-color lights when I can and use a couple of those for the first dance and toasts. If I have time. I can control them from an app. I have a little bit about them in my Canon Wedding Kit video.
Any ND filters you recommend for the 28~70?
I just did the Polar Pro one. I rarely used ND filters though. I'm not a video expert but that's what everyone told me to buy for outdoor stuff.
@@ThePhotographerGuy do you use any polarizer’s during high amount of light situations?
Will this lens work on R7 ?
Yes. It’s an RF mount. You’ll just have a crop.
Do you think that the new RF 35 1.4 will replace the 28-70?
Probably not. I have the EF 35mm MK II f1.4 and never use it on my RF. I just use it on the GFX 100 II.
@@ThePhotographerGuy Don't you think that 70mm is much less sharp than the other stops at 28-70 ?
@@mateuszgwara.fotografia I've found it to be crazy sharp 100% of the time every time. Other than the size. It's the perfect lens for me.
Is the lack of image stabilization isn't a problem?
Not for me. The IBIS is pretty darn good.
IS IT WORTH THE COST OR TROUBLES GOING TO THIS LENS VS THE 24-70?
1000% yes for me.
JUST BOUGHT IT AND IT IS NOW MY ONLY LENS FOR 99% OF MY SHOTS@@ThePhotographerGuy
man those locations pffff
the last two years were really fun and saw a lot of beautiful places.
Where's the R3? Best canon camera for sure. Love the colors from that camera
Sold the R3 and picked up the R6 II. R3 was too big for what I do.
@@ThePhotographerGuy yeah I think for just portraits you don't need a stacked sensor and that speed anyway
Seeing your video with great curiosity. But I am not seeing the pictures as sharp as you are feeling.
I am in the process of listening to different owners. Most of them say it is sharp, but the pictures are hardly sharp. See 10.51 minute. One thing is visible is the blurring of the background that is distinct. I am in the process of selecting between F2 v F2.8 version
Interesting. do you have your settings on 4K on RUclips? That might be why. It's very sharp on my end.
@@ThePhotographerGuy Thanks for your reply. It is plain HD in 1920x1080 pixels. I can make it out that when it has more subjects, one remains in-focus and the rest will be out of focus when longer mm is in use.
"Promo sm"
It’s not sharp as that RF 50mm f1.2 tho almost
Ya the 50 is pretty amazing.
Not a great optical performance by Christopher Frost , rather disappointing, if u need bokeh and low light use the Rf 35 f1.8 and then the 24 105 f4
It’s the best lens I’ve ever used. Use it for 80% of my work and it’s stellar.
Lente magnifica lo negativo el peso y ruido sonido grabando video esperando la segunda version
