    It makes me so happy to hear “ I know which one is my baby” because I feel the exact same way about my 135! Wherever I get a chance to use it, it just brings light to my day. No 70-200 could ever replace it.

    I recently shot with the RF 28-70 *and* the RF 50mm f/1.2 and you can definitely tell the difference. Those RF primes are just in a league of their own, and that's saying a lot against the RF 28-70, which is a beast in its own right. I've shot with the RF 85mm f/1.2 as well but that focal length is a little too close for most of my situations. The 50mm is more ideal for me, but yeah, those lenses are like cheat codes for a photographer. In a time where pro photos are becoming increasingly indistinguishable from iPhone photos, those RF primes really make the case for pro cameras.

      50mm -vs- 85mm decided the subject to background proportions relative to subject. This one of the reasons why a 50mm lens is considered a "normal" lens for 35mm or full frame digital as it delivers subject to background proportions similar to human vision. Longer than normal focal lengths like the 85mm tends to bring the background "into" the subject by creating the perception of being larger than would be perceived with normal human vision. Longer the focal length, stronger this effect.

      It's worth noting that the depth of field at 70mm f/2 is actually shallower ("more bokeh", I guess) than the 50mm f/1.2 for the same subject distance.

  • @Edwin1947D
    @Edwin1947D 3 года назад +46

    It was very easy to see the difference - but I actually liked the look of the backgrounds with the 28-70mm at 70mm - there was plenty of separation but with a little better sense of the background - I don't see that as a negative at all

    • @KatelynJames
      @KatelynJames  3 года назад +14

      Definitely personal preference! You could always increase your aperture on the 85mm if you want a less blurry background but still get the extra compression!

      For the staged shots 85 is the choice. However the ceremony is key for many. You will get more shots with the 28-70. You won’t have to move your feet as much. Most clients couldn’t tell the difference. The look of the 28-70 will far exceed what most photographers are using (24-70) IMHO. I used to carry a lot of lenses. Now two bodies w/28-70 and 135f2

    Here's my take on it. As a wedding photographer, of course I like the 85 vs the 70. But I think, as the video pointed out towards the end, clients who receive the 28-70's 70mm portrait will be thrilled.
    I only shoot primes, even for ceremonies, but I'll be the first to say that if a photographer uses a 28-70, and the client isn't happy with the photos, it really has little to do with the gear itself.

    9:27 Question: Did I hear you correctly that the 85 shots were ALSO at f/2.0, and not at f/1.4?
    Because the DoF looks way shallower on the 85 shots…
    I’d expect the background elements to appear bigger from the added compression the 85 gives, but I’m amazed that the bokeh is so much creamier at the same f/2.0 aperture. 😮

    It's not just the bokeh that changes in these comparisons. The way the light on the face is captured is different, almost glows from within. It could be some exposure differences.. but the 85/1.2 images are magical. (not just yours, but all I've seen reviewed with this lens) I love shooting portraits but am a hobbyist/artist... and am looking at the 85mm/f2 as a cheaper alternative. It also does macro (or at least macro enough to do good ring detail). I think the perfect combo for me shooting a wedding and portraits is the 24-105/f4 and the 85/f2. Light and cost effective. If I had an assistant (i.e. making good money at photography), and I was shooting regularly, then the 85/1.2 would definitely be in my bag. I can see how it's your favorite. I also like my 15-30 for creative portraits and other various scenes... small/light too. Being on your own shooting when you can is a different type of photography than paid gigs, though.
    Also... I have the 100/2.8 and I think it's much more suited to macro vs. portraits) Ever compare your 100 to your 85 set to 2.8? The 100 will look very 'technical' whereas the 85 will have 'the love'. :)
    Just thought I'd offer a perspective for new photographers... from an old one that's done it, lived it, gotten out of it, and returned at a lighter level. :)

    Thank you! Thank you!
    This was a mind-blowing distinction. The part which was really interesting is that you use f/2.0 for the 85mm also. Since both are among Canon's "best foot forward" lenses, this comparison is somewhat a prime vs zoom evaluation, because the difference seems more than 70 vs 85, especially the full-body images. Which raises the question of doing the same comparison with the 50mm and 35mm, and perhaps including images of those wide open as well? I need more prime lens validation! :-D

    I’m shooting another wedding tomorrow. I’m a Nikon d810 dual shooter and I’ll bring a 24-70, 35, 50, 85. 105 macro, 70-200. The 35 and 70-200 will see very little use. I might shoot the ceremony with the 24-70 and 85. Formals with 35 and 85. Reception with 35, 50, 85. The 105 macro is for rings, flowers and all close up details. Maybe I just ain’t right but ……….🤷🏻‍♂️

    I have majority of the RF L line except the 28-70. I decided to pick up the the 24-105 as a temporary substitute until I'm ready to pick up the 28-70. I find the kit lens to be be great in a pinch at weddings with smaller venues where my 85 is harder to work with. In the past I would typically default with the 50m which I'm not crazy about but it gets the job done as well. I think my two favorites still are my 85 and 70-200

    Great comparison! It was easy to tell the 85mm. I do prefer how the 28-70 photos were edited, they seem to have more contrast and pop! I do prefer the 85mm with that shallow DOF and separation. I don't own the 85mm, it's one lens I would love to have at some point. My favorite lens is the 135mm. I would love to see a comparison between the 85 at 1.2 vs the 135 at 2.0.

    • @KatelynJames

      The edits were pretty quick and rough so don’t take that into consideration when judging the lenses!

  • @endah08
    @endah08 3 года назад +13

    Hmm, I don't know if it's in the lens or the edit but the 28-70 is easily nicer in every image. The greater blur in the background doesn't make up for the lack of contrast and what looks to me like not quite as nice highlight roll off. Personally I also find extremem bokeh can start to look like you're shooting someone on a greeen screen which I'm not a fan of. That's just tme though. The third comparison may be an exception because the effect you're going for benefits from the greater compression but I still find the colour and contrast nicer on the 28-70. Really interesting. Nice comparison.

      Sorry, not agreed. 28/70 bokeh looks a bit busy here, not good enough. The excessive background obliteration you mention tends to come in at focal lenghts from 100 up, 85 is still ok (though it depends by your distance from the subject also). Note: I am not an 85mm lover. As for the author of the video: these pics are not enough to judge.

    It's great to hear the perspective from a wedding photographer. I'm on the opposite spectrum as a architectural/real estate photographer so my line up is different for my R6 and EOS R. My must have and use every single day lens is the 15-35 RF, then the 24-70 RF. Your video has brought up questions though on my next RF. I was leaning towards the 70-200 F4 RF for tighter shots ( I don't need super shallow depth), but now I see the 85mm I wonder if I could put that to use. I am soon getting my first mirrorless (Nikon Z9). I am discovering that the new lenses built for mirrorless communicate with the camera in ways the old lenses do not. I know the sensor image stabilization works much better with the new lenses (5 stops versus 2.5 stops). I suspect the autofocus is also better. On the other hand some of the old lenses plus the adaptor will work better on the mirrorless than they did on my DSLR.

    Having owned and used the Canon FD (manual focus) 85mm f1.2 since the late 1980's, there is no reasonable replacement for what this lens does at f1.2. That same manual focus FD lens is easily adapted to being used on the Canon R with a very low cost adapter. While 70mm at f2.0 is very useful and all, the 85mm at f1.2 offers a unique and rather special look to the images it can produce. Key to this is lighting, lens/camera to subject distance combined with distance between subject to background/foreground. The Canon 85mm f1.2 IS one of the very best lenses of this type ever made. It is part of the legendary Canon K35 series introduced to 35mm cinema, used by Stanley Kubrick and a long list of others (including the film Alien) that created remarkable cinema using them.

    Of course there is a huge difference in the separation of subject and background in your samples. You mentioned all images were shot as 2.0. And did you walk further away from your subject shooting the 85 to match the effective mm of the 70mm? Comparing both images side-by-side(6:55), look at the trees on either side of your subject. They appear further apart, so it looks like you didn't walk further back to equal the focal lengths. It is pure geometry. If you take 2 lenses, a $100. lens and a $1,000. lens, true 70mm and 2.0, would equal the same effect. Period! But the sample images from the 85 are too bright. Keep in mind, as a wedding photographer, you are shooting images for your customers. How many of them could tell a difference?

  • @joansmith7649
    @joansmith7649 Год назад +1

    If you want the perspective provided by the 85mm at the increased distance you shoot the 85mm, my recommendation would be to select the ideal distance first, and then adjust the zoom to accommodate the distance. If the distance is too great for the lens to fill the frame at 70mm zoom (eg. the distance you use for the 85mm), simply shoot loosely framed and crop into the the imsage to create the desired framing in post. If your final image is at least 12MP, you will not run into any issues even if a client wants a 4' x 6' wall print. For portraits, high resolution is not necessary unless you are shooting images for dermatological study.
    In order to accentiuate the bokeh and enhance the subject separation (and obtain the bokeh characteristic of faster and longer focal length lenses), in post simply mask the subject and add blur and a touch of grain to the backround and you will have more control over your background than you ever had using the 85/1.2. So feel free to dump the 85/1.2
    One of the biggest issues with prime lenses is that photographers often feel compelled to select a subject-lens distance that will fill the frame with a given lens. Instead, in order to flatter the subject, the subject-lens distance should be choosen to be ideal for your subject's proportions and face shape, and then the appropriate focal length (magnification factor) is chosen. With a 28-70 f/2 you will find that in mopst casses you will be able to accommodate the ideal subject-lens distance. And again, in cases when this zoom runs out of focal length, crop in post.

      Ok, ok, I am not a professional photographer. I'm a professional Grandpa who photographs his family. So in no way am I comparing my work to yours and probably most if not all your subscribers. However, I have a point of view to share. I love dreamy creamy bokeh. The EF 135 2.0 is the dreamiest, ooh, ooh. But with that big heavy rascal you have to shoot from the next county to frame some shots. I exaggerate, a little. I have always preferred primes in order to get the desired separation effect. Then I stretched the budget when I found the RF 24-70mm 2.8 at $500 off. It is so sharp! It focuses so fast! It's heavy. It only goes to 70mm...Unless you shoot at 1.6 crop. I know in your professional circles that's probably verboten but not for me...at all. And even on my Canon RP the circles of confusion are manageable. My point is, when comparing an 85mm to a 70mm the change in difference to the subject should be considered in light of compression and DOF. My conjecture is that if you shot at 70mm at the distance required for the 85mm to similarly frame the subject you would find similarly pleasing bokeh when you afterwards enlarge the image to mimic the 85mm framing. I bet that the quality would be acceptable on a 45MP sensor. I predict bokeh based on hyperfocal distance. I use an app to calculate it. For instance on an RP, an 85mm at 1.4 delivers a hyperfocal distance of 588 feet, the distance beyond which everything is in focus. A 70mm at 1.6 crop is an angle of view similar to a 112mm lens. A 112mm lens on the RP's 26MP delivers a hyperfocal distance of 510 feet, in the ballpark of the 85's 588 feet. When enlarged, the very small circles of confusion remain in tolerable size to appear as focused but the bokeh balls from the larger circles of confusion render exponentially, bigger, softer, dreamier backgrounds...hobbyists are the only people who have time to prove me wrong, LOL!

    Thanks for that KJ! I am a strict prime shooter (like you used to be lol) but (1) Sony doesn't offer a 2.0 zoom and (2) I'm sorry but a 24-70 f2.8 (or f2 for that matter) can render like my 24mm f1.4, 50mm f1.2, 85mm f1.4 or 135 f1.8 Sony G Master primes. Also the Sony gives the ability to switch between full frame and aps-c modes by repurposing the focus hold button on the lens.

    if budget is restricted for now would it work a RF 50 1.8 + RF 85 2.0 macro IS + RF 35 1.8 IS? Due to not that high glass quality the 1.8s would be used at 2.0. The 85 would be used at 2.0 since it's a macro, macro lenses tend to be just a tad more sharp, but also a bit slower to focus. Used to use the 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 but they were too heavy to carry for a 18 hours wedding day
