The 28-70 is absolutely my favorite lens. The feel of the images and backgrounds, especially at f2, have such a great quality to them. That extra bit of light during for evenings is great too. I've gotten used to the weight but my only gripe is how difficult it can be to catch someone where they don't notice you're pointing a camera at them as the lens is just, big. But that said, it doesn't leave my camera during events, and leveling up my sneak is a fair trade :D Edit: Great video as always!
That's why I love my Fuji cameras. You get so many great and natural moments, but you of course sacrifice a bit of the larger sensor magic you get from carrying around those monsters.
Dream setup for me. I run with EF versions 24-70 2.8 L (ver 1) and 70-200 IS ii USM on R6 and Eos R. Still excellent lenses and they work great, but RF would be a dream
I just returned my copy of the the 28-70. I loved it and shot a wedding on it. Then I reviewed the images and found that at 70mm it isn't all that sharp and there was significant ghosting going on. It was super disappointing. I rented a copy before buying and I didn't see that issue. After going over so many images shot with my primes (35, 50, and 85), even though the 28-70 is sharp (at least a good copy), it just doesn't have that razor sharpness of the primes. I figured no one would notice but me, but the first thing my wife said after seeing a handful of photos was that they didn't have that pop or crispness of my previous work. That really struck my core. Luckily I was able to return the lens to Canon for a refund. And I don't think I'll buy another copy and just stick with my primes. In the end, whatever works for you.
Great, interesting video. I've just bought that lense and in June I'm going to shoot my first wedding. So time to adjust. The weight isn't a problem for me since I'm used to shoot a lot with my tamron 15-30 with EF/RF adapter and that's not a "lightweight" lense either🙂
Everything is good these days haha. I actually prefer Nikon bodies and glass. Canon is just a bit easier for autofocus. And for these videos the R5 has a top LCD that doesn’t flicker from refresh like the Z6ii
The part where the bride changed it up and didn’t go down the aisle like you were expecting gave me anxiety 😂 so many little things while shooting a wedding
I bought this lens with great hesitation, but after owning it for a month and shooting regularly with it I do have to say it is probably one of the best zoom lenses I have ever used. Fast, sharp, fast AF, beautiful images. The weight, initially you are like sheesh 😒, but you get used to it really quickly and forget about the weight.
Is canon not making this lens anymore ? It just came out and never available again. I've been waiting for like 1yr for this lens to come back in stock 😔
Can't speak for Taylor, I bought the grip with the r5 and it's the most uncomfortable grip ever, buttons not in the right place or spaced too far for a comfortable reach. I have used it maybe 30 minutes total and to me it's the worst piece of Canon gear I have ever bought. It's as though Canon got lazy and subcontracted the design out to a different company. It's not up to Canon standards.
I like the lens for weddings, though it's not the best for run and gun. Also, for a lot of wedding photography shallow depth of field (f2) isn't that helpful because you often find that where there is more than one person who is the subject of your photo (say, bride and groom) then one of them is usually softly focussed, which isn't ideal. For a lot of outdoor shots a 24-105 f4 is far more useful.
I agree 100% with you. I feel like F2 is great if your main style/niche is portrait work and you're obsessed with bokeh. Personally, even with the Sigma 1.4, I rarely shot wide open because I preferred less bokeh in the background, but tack-sharp images. I found myself mainly shooting around 2.8, so I just went with the 24-70mm instead and I love it. Still plenty of bokeh, but also a wider focal range. I guess it really depends on the persons style of shooting.
You are spot on! I actually wanted to get this lens, but the focus breathing was a no-go for me, since I shoot a lot of video. Therefore I settled for the RF 24-70 2.8, which is still to arrive... Man, waiting time is the hardest time ;) I own the RF 50 1.8 which I love for run and gun pictures, but the focus breathing is so, so brutal and made me realize how much focus breathing for video is an actual problem. Great video as usual!
Taylor...may I ask what settings you use for people walking down the aisle towards you (bridemaids, etc) Probably SERVO AF and what AF method? thanks man! joe
Hey Taylor, great video as always! Apologies if this has already been asked before - what setup do you use to film your wedding day bts videos? Bracket, camera, etc? Quality is great and the perspective is even better!
Jaime from Texas here Taylor, I noticed you weren’t shooting with any flashes. Did you use any for this shoot? I’m shooting an outdoor wedding this weekend outdoors and I was planning on using my Godox flash but your pics are amazing so I’m rethinking the shoot now. Excellent job as always and thanks again for the video.
On the fence deciding to keep my Nikon z gear or switch to Canon for the AF. Question - are you shooting your weddings with mechanical or electronic shutter? I hear the canon mechanical is SUPER quiet.
@@Seitenwerk I think it's just Sony. The point is there are going to be significant AF improvements soon, so he should wait to pull the trigger on a super expensive switch. Nikon's lenses are incredible, plus he already owns them.
Thanks Taylor - R6 now comes with video backup and clog 3 - this has all but stopped me from buying a Z - just trying to figure if ill miss my Nikon photo/video switch to toggle back and forth - this really is the only feature missing from the R6

Having followed you for a while it seems weird seeing you use a standard zoom over primes. This lens looks very convenient but you cant beat the portability of a prime on a long days shoot.
I've considered this lens but it's just such a heavy setup. For a full wedding day your arms get super fatigued. I'm sticking with two bodies and a 35/85 combo.
Hey Taylor, how'd you rate this f2 vs using Canon 35 1.4 and 85 1.2 primes for weddings? I like very wide apertures for the look and avoid using flash as much as possible, so although tempting to switch over to this single zoom lens for practicality, I'm worried I'll lose that wide aperture look. Awesome video, thanks for posting 👍
I personally still prefer the primes for what it’s worth. As someone that uses 85 a lot, only having reach to 70 was a bit to get used to. I’d say rent it for a weekend if you can
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto The 15mm difference could be made up with a slight crop in post. There's more than enough res in the R5 to handle losing a little. Yes/No?
Just switched to Canon 2 weeks ago for this lens and I absolutely love it. Its not perfect and has some flaws but overall its versatility and look in terms of value its unbeatable even at such high price tag. Some observations made: This lens does not perform very well with up-close detail shots like rings, especially at 70mm, but with larger sensor resolution its not as much of a problem. Furthermore, next point can be both a good thing and bad thing ( I mostly consider it a good thing ), but 28-70mm has the most smoothest transition from focused to unfocused area at wide open i have ever seen. This is one of vital aspects of what makes this lens so pleasing to an eye, however at same time amount of times i had to punch in and squint at a screen to figure out if i have the photo in focus or not is insane considering how long i owned it for. Its a learning curve with this wonderful piece of tech and i need to get accustomed to its idiosyncrasies.
28-70 like prime lens with beautiful picture, bokeh, sharpness, tones, colors…. And 24-70 like studio or reportage lens with very simple technical picture
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto But no one other than you can tell the difference between F2 and 2.8 - but great to hear you don’t hate that focal length anymore 👍
