When the iPhone camera app is open it stays on until you turn the screen off. So if a single touch were to go straight to the camera that means you could bump it in your pocket, it would open the camera app and completely drain your phone. The next time you take your phone out of your pocket it would be dead.

I think the same problem was faced with the action button, but they corrected it In a software update to detect when its in your pocket with the sensors. Im assuming they are doing the same thing here, if not will be soon.

the reason apple put the button where it is is because it replaced the 5g antenna, they didnt want to completely redesign the internals for the phone so they took the shortcut.

The redesign is going to be a feature for the iPhone 20

    1) If you are looking at your phone (even if it is not open) FaceID wakes the screen up to the Lock Screen and you don't need to press the Camera Control button twice, just once to open the app. Further even if set to "one click" opens, you can double click the Camera Control button when *not* looking at the phone (as in your example) and the app opens. The real reason for "two click" to even exist is if you are accidentally pressing the Camera Control button during normal use of the phone and accidentally opening the camera app you can reduce this with "two click" since its more likely you won't unintentionally enter a double click.
    2) I agree with the placement of the button, it would be better to be closer to the edge for landscape photography. I suspect the location of the Camera Control is a compromise for two reasons: 1, it likely reduces unintentional presses when using the phone for non-photography purposes and 2, the button is useable when shooting one handed vertically which all the kids for TikTok etc. (and the coming Visual Intelligence mode that will be part of Apple Intelligence) love... it may feel insecure to you but its still more manageable vertically than it would be if it were at the corner.
    3) In general I agree with the issues with light vs. firmer presses. I certainly can change settings faster using the screen but I've also learned how to do it with the Camera Control button (more slowly however)... it could see the button being useful to change settings when I don't have both hands available and I need to take a shot but change the settings first. Pretty niche but I do think it's nice to have the option.
In general the most important thing to me is the dedicated button to launch the camera app. For that I love the new Camera Control. I know we could assign that to the Action Button but I never liked that location for the camera button on the 15 Pro and having a special button dedicated to the camera is a big win in the 16 series. The second most important thing is I can trigger the shutter with the button. I do find it can induce a tiny bit of shake vs. tapping the screen, but sometimes I am operating the phone one handed and being able to "click the shutter" is very useful (selfies are so much easier!). Finally the jury is still out on the usefulness of the lighter presses of the button controlling settings, but you can disable that if you don't use it but I find I like at least having it as an option even if I seldom need it.

    Great job on the video!
I’m really curious how the new iPhone stacks up against the Sony ZV-E10 (which I own) or the ZV-E1 (which I’ve been wanting but it’s just way too damn pricey and bulky compared to the iPhone 16 Pro). I shoot handheld almost 100% of the time with the ZV-E10 (the stabilization is such a crap! sometimes I just wanna throw it in the trash). But dropping $2200 for just the body of the ZV-E1, plus lenses, feels ridiculous since I’m mostly just shooting this for nothing.
The iPhone’s got insane stabilization, which is perfect for travel, but I swear, the picture quality sometimes looks like pixelated trash, especially in low light. You notice that too, or is it just me?
I’m also wondering if the iPhone can really compete for travel videos against a Sony camera. I’ve gotten so used to Sony’s sharpness, bocke ,the focal distance, etc. The iPhone detalization just seems weak in comparison, especially when you blow it up on a big screen. Do you think the convenience of the iPhone makes up for that, or does the quality drop hit you hard when you switch from a proper camera?
Honestly, it would be awesome if you could do a video comparing your experience with both the iPhone and ZV-E10. Maybe test them out in different conditions-low light, motion, whatever. I’d love to know if the iPhone’s quality is good enough to be a main video device for travel, or if it’s still just a backup compared to something like the ZV-E10 or ZV-E1

I like your videos man but I have to say i disagree with almost everything you said there. If you pull your phone out of the pocket face id will unlock and you only need to press once. I never hold the camera that way and the button is placed perfectly for me. The argument agains the many functionalities on the button, maybe, but it becomes second nature after you do it a lot of times. Just like a new camera with its many dials. Anyways, thanks for the video, have a good one!
