    Just saw a video made by fishing HQ testing 7 popular knots. He tested this one last. It tested top of its class. Snell was second. None of the 7 tested past the pound test line he was using. San Diego made it to 20 once, but averaged 19.8 or close to that. Polymer was third.

    I've tried the double improved clinch, the double pitzen and the double san Diego Jam knots. They're all good but I think I'm going to go with the double San Diego jam knot. It just seems stronger than the other 2. Without a doubt it's much better than the old trilene knot I learned on when I was a kid.

    • @dtffishingmi
      @dtffishingmi  Год назад +1

      I used to assume that the double San Diego Jam knot was the strongest of the group; after all, it has one more cinch than the double pitzen or the berkley braid knot (close cousins of the double SDJ knot). However, something that I didn't consider when comparing the knots was the shape of the knot. The line that runs vertically across the wraps in the double SDJ knot restricts the knot as it cinches down, giving it a more narrow shape. When you only cinch it once (the double pitzen or berkley braid knot) the wraps are not restricted and will flatten out more, creating more surface area contact with the eye of the hook due to the wider profile. Theoretically, this would reduce the amount of force applied directly to the lines running through the eye of the hook on the hook set, and cause the hook itself to absorb a slightly higher portion of the force. I think the double SDJ is superior with regard to slip resistance, but if none of the knots will slip before they break, the others might have an edge (based on my limited knowledge of physics). This is my longest nerdiest response to a comment yet, but I am planning to eventually test all of these knots head to head with all line types using a pull force gauge, and finally determine the undisputed strongest knot. Thanks for watching!

      @colobisman6132 Год назад

      @@dtffishingmi Hmmmm! You've made some really great points. Also on the double pitzen and double improved clinch knots they'll technically continue to tighten as you fight a fish since that's what clinch knots do. Maybe I haven't settled on one yet. Looking forward to your tests. I think I'll have to do some more testing myself. Thanks for your response.

      @@dtffishingmi does this potentially mean that the standard stress testing 2 different knots isnt exactly showing the best know because it doesn't take into account movement over time or while catching a fish? Double pitzen hasn't failed me but i fish with a lower test most the time

  • @jazwraps7178
    @jazwraps7178 6 месяцев назад +1

    Im so glad i already spent 30 minutes learning the double pitzen and a year practice... makes this one super easy to learn.
    Started fishing again only about a year ago and quickly learned the old knots we made had way more to do with loosing fish then the lb test used.

    • @dtffishingmi
      @dtffishingmi  6 месяцев назад +1

      This knot is kinda like a close cousin of the double Pitzen! It just has one extra cinch on the tag end. I use this knot for heaver fluoro/mono, and the double Pitzen for lighter fluoro/mono (12lb or less). The double SDJ cinches tighter and cuts into itself a little more than the double Pitzen, so I don't like to use it on thinner line.
      Thanks for watching!

    Nice videography! I wonder about trying this knot on small flies due to the small hook eye. Sometimes I have difficulty getting just one pass of the line through the hook eye. Considering this, have you tried tying the knot on small nymphs and dries? Is the higher level of knot strength worth the trade off of said difficulty and the loss of tippet length?

    • @dtffishingmi
      @dtffishingmi  Месяц назад

      Funny you mention that! Full transparency, I only recently started tying on flies. I have been using this knot for some bigger streamer and leech patterns, but in some cases with the tiny size 14-16 nymphs, the double SDJ knot profile is almost as big as the fly. One thing to consider is the other knots and line strengths in your setup. If you’re using a double SDJ at the tippet-fly connection, but a weaker knot at the tippet-leader connection - your weak point just changed in an unfavorable way for both you and the fish. In my opinion, your connections should only get stronger as you move up the line from the fly. Primarily for this reason, I don’t think the double SDJ is advantageous in those situations. I’ve been using primarily the standard SDJ knot with 5x tippet - 5-7 wraps 👌

    good demo. My 76 year old hands refuse to tie this knot in 20 or 30 lb mono. They will tie a springer knot, maybe you could do a test with the springer knot. thanks

    • @dtffishingmi
      @dtffishingmi  4 месяца назад +1

      Thank you! The double SDJ is definitely tougher with the stiffer, heavier lines and leaders. I checked out the springer knot - it seems fairly easy to tie with heavier line, but despite passing through the eyelet twice, it only cinches on the tag end once. With line that heavy, I'm worried less about it breaking at the knot, and more about it slipping. I would recommend the standard San Diego Jam knot, which passes through the eyelet once, but cinches the tag end twice. Let me know if the standard SDJ is also tough for your hands, and I'll do more research into knots that would be both strong and easier to tie with older hands.

    • @dtffishingmi
      @dtffishingmi  Месяц назад

      Sorry to hear that - I bet it’s tough for sure with the more challenging knots. If I had to pick a knot that would be the easiest to tie with my eyes closed, it would probably be the uni knot. It’s not going to as strong as any of the doubled line knots, but it’s comparable to the standard clinch knot in strength and doesn’t require you to thread the line through any small holes. When tied with the appropriate number of wraps, it’s quite reliable. I still use it in various situations and I’m confident I could tie it blindfolded 👍

      If your knots ain’t broken, don’t fix em 💯- Personally, I don’t have trouble with this one in the wind. If I’m using 4 lb test though, I’m typically fishing for panfish or something small, and something like an improved clinch knot is more than sufficient. However, if there’s a good chance I might hook a big smallie or a trout in that location, I might tie a double SDJ just in case. Anything can happen!

    To complicated for real world fishing, the single SD knot works just fine.

    • @dtffishingmi
      @dtffishingmi  3 месяца назад +1

      The regular SDJ knot is great in certain situations - like super heavy fluorocarbon leader to lure connections (line that is too stiff for a double SDJ). I think everyone has a different definition for “real world fishing” though - this is one of the most commonly used knots in professional bass fishing. I use it frequently for bass, walleye, and other species of similar size, and can tie it in under 15 seconds in the wind, and I’m not particularly talented. Just takes practice!
