Absolutely, but if you aren’t expecting fish to take you all the way into your backing, it might not be necessary. If it’s a likely scenario though, better safe than sorry!
@@dyonkers1 I would try starting out with 10 - it’s going to take some strong force to get the braid to bite into the 80lb leader - I definitely suggest using some line tensioners or gloves to cinch. If you find that the knot isn’t cinching properly at 10 wraps, I probably wouldn’t do less wraps at that point, but instead drop down to 80lb braid. What are you fishing for?
I’m jigging for tuna here 😅n ny , it’s over kill however there is double duty as I go to Alaska yearly to hunt giant halibut . There this gear is fine…
Not in this case. You’re wanting the braid to grab onto and bite into the leader. Moistening may inhibit the heat and friction necessary for the braid to bite into the fluorocarbon
I dont know who Rizzuto is but the finishing knot you used is traditionally known as a "whipping knot" which is used to wrap the ends of ropes to keep them from unravelling. We also use it to finish the wraps when serving a bowstring. Its been used for centuries.
It's just a method for finishing a knot that was accredited to Jim Rizzuto - but like many other knots & techniques, has been around for centuries and used for many other applications. I see this a lot in the knot world, and it would be nice if we could just standardize things and stop trying to get things named after ourselves, but unfortunately, there are a LOT of egos in the fishing world.
What about lubricating (spit) the knot before cinching it down? And how about for the Alberto knot ? I watched your video for that one too, and you didn’t wet that knot either before cinching it down? Thanks for “knot easy” series!!!!
Lubrication in this case would be counterproductive - it’s used to reduce friction and the buildup of heat, which can weaken line coatings. With the FG, we are trying to get the braid to grab the leader and dig into that outer layer. Lubricating prior might slow this process down by preventing the braid from grabbing hold due to reduced friction and heat buildup. Thanks for watching! 🤘
It's a great knot! The Alberto knot has never let me down and many pro anglers use the Alberto knot for Bass. If you're changing leaders all the time the FG is not time efficient imo. But hey if you like it then tie away.
Before I got quicker with this method, I was tying FG knots in preparation and Alberto on the water, but now I tie the Alberto with light line and the FG with any leader > 12 lb test. I’m not consistent with my time yet, but the FG is down to 60-90 seconds for me 😎
Alberto knot is super fast and fail-safe for anything finesse (12lb or less). For heavier line, up to 80#, I just do a Double-Uni, which is also super fast and has never failed. This FG knot looks nice when its done, but is time consuming, easy to miss a step or wrap, and unless you're in a knot-tying contest, completely unnecessary.
They always say the best knot is the knot you can tie comfortably under pressure; within reason. If I'm offshore and time is of the essence, I'm using a 4-turn Surgeon knot for a leader up to 35#. Heavier than that, I've been fine up to 80# tying an RP/John Collins before and on the water. I've tried getting on with the FG in the past, but have never had them come out as consistently good as from watching this vid. Will be referencing this often to get my pre-boat leaders tied using the FG from now on - Cheers !
The FG is the only knot I use from braid to leader, .. 65lb. Braid…to 80lb. Mono with a Risutto finish and super glue makes the knot slick as slug snot…👌😎👍
@@nextlevelangling Bro, ... The 80lb. shock leader is wrapped around the spool about 5 times and the over hang is about 5’ I use 80lb. It's much easier to just grab the shock leader to pull your fish out of the water,,,. Then you say,,… “You're mine, .. Faaker!” Lol 🤣🤣🤣 Good luck to you..! 👌😎👍
Even if you tie it correctly, it may break when you cinch it just because of the force that it takes to get the braid to bite it. I use 6 lb braid to 4 lb fluoro on my ultra light setup, and I use the Alberto knot to connect them 🤘
I tie it with leader >= 12 lb. test. As long as you can get the braid to bite down properly into the leader. As you get into the heavier braids, you may have to reduce the number of wraps in order to cinch it properly.
When I want a mono or fluorocarbon leader on my braided fishing line, I tie a small swivel onto the braided line, then tie on about 18" of mono. I am 80 years old and my fingers don't work as well as did in the past. I have found tying knots on braid to be much more difficult because of its lack of memory.
They make a tool called the Knot Assist 2.0 that aids in tying the FG knot - it's easier when it comes to dexterity, but it's equally complicated regarding the steps involved. There are also a couple of other FG knot methods that require less dexterity, but are more time-consuming. If you're looking for a strong braid-to-leader knot that doesn't require as much dexterity, I like the Alberto knot. I have a tutorial for that one as well. Let me know if you're able to tie that one after some practice, and I'll try to figure something else out if you're having trouble.
Seguar knot is designed for mono to fluoro and is super simple. Pulled up ling cod and doubles of rock cod with 40 lbs mono to 20 lbs flouro with no issues.
@@HughButler-lb6zs haha no worries! Maybe you were referring to my Double San Diego Jam tutorial? If so - if you’re line is too thick to pass through the eye twice, you might consider the standard SDJ as an alternative, or decreasing the diameter of the leader (depending on what you’re targeting). I’ve used the double SDJ for some size 6 flies on 1X tippet (12 lb test), so you must be using some pretty small jigs!
Did it with 40 lbs mono.. thinking this is pretty easy.. I just tried it with 20 lbs Seguar Gold fluoro.. I got it on the 3rd try. 😅 both with Diamond 8x 50 lbs braid.
3rd try aint bad at all! You might have had an easier time on the 20lb leader with 10-20 lb braid. As soon as I get down to 12 lb. leader, I go straight for the Alberto knot. The FG knot isn't well suited for light line - at a certain point, you're likely to break the line if you apply the necessary force to get the braid to bite into the leader. The Alberto is a great alternative when you get into the lighter stuff. Thanks for watching! 🙏
@@nextlevelangling So, got snagged and the braid broke first. 20 lb green Seguar fluoro vs 50 lbs 8x Diamond braid. EDIT: Retied the FG on the beach and practiced casting a lucky craft 110 afterwards. Thx for sharing the info.
Just looked it up for the first time! Functionally, it's similar to the Uni-to-Uni knot, but it's a Uni-to-Overhand knot instead. Simple to tie, but I question the breaking strength since it employs an overhand knot to secure the leader. The Uni-to-Uni knot is perhaps easier to tie, less wasteful of leader material, and my bet is that it would also be stronger. Just a theory based on my knowledge of similar knots though! I try my best to avoid overhand knots.
It’s tough with the FG knot, because the braid has to bite down into the fluoro. I have 200 lb high visibility braid, but I don’t believe it would be humanly possible to pull hard enough to force line that thick to bite into some fluorocarbon. Might have to use my car to cinch it down at that point 🙂
Thanks for the video. I tried this but It does not work for a 10lb braid to a 10 lb floro...the floro wraps the braid instead of the other way around. Tried several times. It seems your method only works when the leader floor is much thicker than the braid. You might want to mention that in your title.
It is very difficult with light fluoro. For fluoro = 17lb. I'll keep that in mind for future videos - when I am finished covering the knots I think are worth covering, I am planning to produce some videos that cover all of the most important knots to learn and their specific use cases, including line types, techniques, etc.
Alberto knot is the way to go under 15lb and also the Double Uni knot can work. Never fail fishing 7lb bass or some 6 lb Catfish and they really fight.
I use this knot with fluoro 12 lb. and higher. The most important thing is that your braid is low enough in diameter to dig into the fluoro material and grab hold. My most common uses are 10 lb. Braid to 12 lb. Fluoro, & 20 lb. Braid to 17/20/30/40 lb leader, depending on the target species.
It requires more dexterity for sure, but it’s the only method I know of that can be performed unassisted with just your hands. When mastered, it’s also likely the fastest by a good margin
I could never tie that knot until I use the rod to provide the tension. I can never figure out how to provide the tension with my hand, even though the FG is a great knot. I could tie three Albrights in the time it takes me to tie one
@@FredFlintstone223 it’s definitely not the easiest knot. Takes a fair amount of practice to tie it well in under 60 seconds. I’m still working on it myself. But it’s a knot once tied, that I never have to worry about

Can I use this knot for mono (backing) to braid (main line)??
Absolutely, but if you aren’t expecting fish to take you all the way into your backing, it might not be necessary. If it’s a likely scenario though, better safe than sorry!

Question I'm going 100 lb braid to 80 lb top shot fluro... how many wraps would you suggest

@@nextlevelangling Thanks!
Nicely done.

Would it not be advantageous to moisten the know BEFORE cinching it down?

The rizzuto finish on braid and mainline is what most angler use because a rizzuto on braid creates a weak point when the knot sink on that braid.
I’m trying to figure if I can do this knot with a 4 lb leader!?
Even if you tie it correctly, it may break when you cinch it just because of the force that it takes to get the braid to bite it. I use 6 lb braid to 4 lb fluoro on my ultra light setup, and I use the Alberto knot to connect them 🤘
What leader diameter to braid does this work on? I have tried to tie 15 lbs braid to 10 lbs flouro to varying degrees of success
I tie it with leader >= 12 lb. test. As long as you can get the braid to bite down properly into the leader. As you get into the heavier braids, you may have to reduce the number of wraps in order to cinch it properly.
Saved 👍
🙏
Thank you! I watched another video and I kept shittin the bed... Got it first try watching yours!
No more beds shall be shat! 🙌
The knot strength tests I saw showed this to be the strongest knot. My only reservation is going through the eye of jigs twice could be difficult.
Was this comment meant for a different knot video?
@dtffishingmi must be. Doesn't make any sense does it. Sorry.
🙏

Have you tried a red Phillip knot
Just looked it up for the first time! Functionally, it's similar to the Uni-to-Uni knot, but it's a Uni-to-Overhand knot instead. Simple to tie, but I question the breaking strength since it employs an overhand knot to secure the leader. The Uni-to-Uni knot is perhaps easier to tie, less wasteful of leader material, and my bet is that it would also be stronger. Just a theory based on my knowledge of similar knots though! I try my best to avoid overhand knots.
Can you put use a more colorful line and bigger line on your next video? 😊
It’s tough with the FG knot, because the braid has to bite down into the fluoro. I have 200 lb high visibility braid, but I don’t believe it would be humanly possible to pull hard enough to force line that thick to bite into some fluorocarbon. Might have to use my car to cinch it down at that point 🙂
thank you
Thanks for the video.
If the last wrap doesn't cinch down, try some lubrication and pull again
What size fluro? 😢
Ok I bought 20 fluro for 8 lb braid hope it works

This is one of the hardest ways to tie this knot
It requires more dexterity for sure, but it’s the only method I know of that can be performed unassisted with just your hands. When mastered, it’s also likely the fastest by a good margin
Use albright knot and super glue , easy and quick and does not break at the knot
Interesting way to keep tension, but for me it's way easier to use the rod for tension and wrap the end around my pinky.
@@10ring That works too!
