Some tips so ya don't launch a 15 dollar jackhammer and watch your leader go flying like I did. Took me a few weeks, but I figured things out. Make sure the wraps are tight. You can take your fingers off from holding the knot to check and readjust, just keep constant pressure and be gentle. Then after your first half hitch, wet your line and pull hard on your mainline and leader, it should tighten it up and the braid should change color. If it slips off at this point, it's a bad knot and ya need to start over. From there two more half hitches, tightened hard with wet line, then I like to snip my fluoro leader with just about an eighth of an inch remaining sticking out, then do a 6 wrap rizutto. The rizutto covers the rest of the fluoro, and makes it nice and smooth, so it goes through the guides nice and easy on the retrieve.
My problem with jackhammers has been the clinch knot on the end. Lost two with the knot failing. Never had that knot fail on anything else. So i think i need a new terminal knot.
Exactly how i do it twiggs!!, the pull/hard sinch after the half hitch which is done after the 12-15 wraps is the key -- the braid digging into the leader (hardening up) is the strength of the FG knot, everything after can be modified to angler desire and the rizutto or whatever just preserves the knot but 100+ times threw the guides it can certainly start to wear and needs be checked after each trip for sure
This is an absolute game changer! This method was quick and easy to learn (mostly because it was so thoroughly explained), and will be so much easier to tie out on the water. Seriously, thank you! Instantly subscribed based on this single video.
While I understand the need to use large diameter lines like 100lb leader and 30-50lb braid so it is able to be seen on tv. But in reality, you have to realise most of us are using, as in my case, a 6lb leader and 4lb braid. Not as easy as you portray here. Try getting 6 or even 12lb leader to stay rigid like that, and you will be tearing your hair out. So, no. It isn't really that easy on smaller lines! This is not a heckle as you state, it's just I have watched countless people on here tying this and other knots, and at no stage do any of you mention or make allowances for smaller diameter lines. Add the fact, I'm 63 and wear glasses, adds a whole new dimension of difficulty. Which is my failing, not yours! That said, the instruction was clear and easy to follow.👍
Finally the right video is here. I have seen the knot done in a very similar way before in another video, and I quickly adopted it to my own fishing. All the other tutorials are far too complicated IMO, so I learned this triangle method and it has never let me down. You do not have tag ends flying all over the place and you have every bit of line tightened in your hands. To make sure the braid bites from the beginning of the knot, I pull it tight at an angle to the leader after the first 6-8 turns and repeat. Giving a total of around 12-16 turns. This will insure that the braid is tight all the way. It shows when the braid has changed its color slightly. I make the rizutto finish around the main braid including the leader. Keep the great videos coming. It is always a pleasure to watch.
Idk if it’s because I’ve watched 59 other tutorial videos on this while trying “real time” or if your video is actually one the worked for me. I honestly think it’s because I’ve now tried this knot 60 times and have finally succeeded 😂
Firstly, excellent knot, this will be great on the boat. The end know you demonstrated is not a rizzuto finish but from your experience, the knot strength is well proven. This video was excellent, thank you, something good on my schedule during the lockdown
hey seriously thanks for this tutorial, i was using a double uni which has never failed me before but i started to look for a better knot and came across some FG tutorials which looked super ridiculous and like you'd need a third arm to tie the bloody thing and i wasn't convinced. i came across your video and it seemed so much nicer to tie this way, and now its my favorite knot. i could break my double unis when i tried really hard but i cannot break this no matter how hard i pull and now i have way more confidence in my rigs i know when that big fish comes he wont be lost because of a knot i tied. cheers man appreciate it.
@Pelagic Pursuit - keep in mind that when people are discussing 16-22 times for this knot, they are referring to just one side. So over once, under once. For them that's two. You are doing two at a time, so one for you is two for others. When you did 15 times at the end, that is equivalent to people doing over/under 30 times. But nice rendition of the FG Knot.
I’ve tried tying them on 10-12ib main and leaders and sometimes have problems with the braid slipping on the leader. If your having difficulty try tying a double uni for lighter lines
Female fisho here, alot of the tips and tricks for knot tying i see for fishing seems so similar to what we tween girls did back in the 90s when making our friendship bracelets! The triangle "criss cross" method was what we used too 😳 it's a lost art form, we never had videos back then, it was all handed down to us from the older girls at school. Lol fishos could learn a thing or two from watching friendship bracelet videos nowadays 😂
I spent an hour trying to tie this knot in the way shown. All I did was learn to swear loudly. It might work on heavy leader and line but i can not get it to work on PE1 braid with 24kg leader.
This must work better with larger diameter line. I'm using 20lb braid to 15lb fluro and that line will twist up faster than I can blink. It seems I cannot grip the twists strong enough without them slipping out, crossing over each loop, or becoming a twisted mess. Maybe practice with 50lb everything will work better for practice. I know the double uni is not nearly as strong, but I can tie it.
Every other FG video I've watched has seemed too daunting, but yours gave me the confidence to learn it! been at it for about an hour now and I think I've got it down. Thanks heeps
ruclips.net/video/P8ouZCNq7Nk/видео.html ruclips.net/video/LxWwtHigcQo/видео.html Most guys that are popping/jigging with heavy mono are using a variation of the Uni knot or the AG Chain knot (AG Chain is a bit overkill IMO) which attaches to a swivel, then to a split ring, to the lure. Swivel prevents line twist and split ring allows for quick changes of lures. For catching bluefin tuna in the 130-250lb class on spinning gear (100lb braid to 150lb leader) I used to use an improved clinch knot or small aluminum crimp to attach to my lure. In the past 5 years I’ve switched over to the double wrapped, 4 turn uni knot (I use line tensioners) with the tag end burned down into a little stopper, a high quality barrel or ball bearing swivel, and have never experienced a failure pushing to 20-23kg of drag. Here’s a couple of tutorials from reputable guys. Matty actually used to be a field tester for MB Custom Lures if you watch his early videos. I use the MB Custom double wrapped uni whereas Briggsy uses a traditional uni knot. Once you get into that 100+lb class leader material I don’t think single or double wrapped matters too much, it’s just a peace of mind thing for me personally.
That's AWESOME! I've been tying the FG a few years now by holding the line tight with my foot, bending my rod tip over to try and keep the line tight, and all sorts of things. This will happen tonight when I get home, looks too easy, but I really like easy with great results!!! Thank you!!
Thanks Matt, really appreciate the tutorial. Really well explained making it easy to understand your method. This will take remove much of the challenge of replacing a leader in the midst of a hot bite or windy conditions. Awesome stuff! Rgds Greg.
I've tried this knot over and over again using MUCH thinner lines (.285/30lb Braid Main + .285/12lb Mono Leader) and I absolutely can not get it to work. Can you please do a video showing the successful accomplishment of this technique utilizing these more freshwater applicable sizes of line - and a slow motion overhead from your point of view of the process sure would be way appreciated IF you can do that. I think if you could make this video foolproof for anyone to tie this it would be the most popular FG knot video on RUclips hands down.
This technique is going to be a little bit tougher with thinner leader line than his stiff 100 lb leader. For me when I was trying to plait the braid around the thin leader without keeping tension on the leader, the leader was wanting to want to double over. It works, but for me I was still really slow and sloppy with this one using 15lb leader. Another video that helped me with the FG is ruclips.net/video/sUnagr6KpM4/видео.html Now in that video he kind of just blows through it but it's a good overhead view and after watching a couple times it was pretty easy to figure out. Another mistake i was making is keeping tension vs applying force during the plaiting process. You want to just keep the tension tight during the plaiting and then after you do a couple half hitches you can really cinch that knot up
Mate this is Gold 🥇 I've watched heaps of fg knot videos, and I do use it regularly despite doing different fishing to yourself, but I have never seen one like this, this is brilliant. Thank you so much 🙏 You sir are a genius and a legend 👍 👊
Great video. However, I have been unable to adapt this method to freshwater lite line uses. The leader material is just not stiff enough. If anyone has figured this out, please let me know.
Yur right. Works ok if done PERFECT on 10# mono, nothing smaller. A bit more forgiving at 15#. Twenty # or above, no worries. True for whatever FG method you use.
That’s the best video of the FG knot I’ve seen yet. Thanks mate you explained it perfectly. I’ve been tying it a few different ways for years but that’s the best way I’ve seen yet. 🤙
Now I"m cutting down to 15 twists, been doing 20. Been waiting for this fg thing from you and finally you made one. Will be using this on my next braid to leader knot. ☺
Northern, if you do 15 times of his way, you are actually doing 30 of your old way - assuming you used to do over once, under once. He is doubling up - each one of his is two of yours. Nothing wrong with that, but you are actually doing more twists.
@@NorthernFishers Oh, I thought you switched to this method. But 15 is an odd number...I would think you would want an even number. I think Salt Strong does 16? Not sure, but the only time I had one fail, it was around 16...but I probably didn't cinch it tight as I made it...user error I'm sure. But Pelagic's 15 is like you doing 30 with Briggsy's method.
Brilliant. I love the FG. It's already worth taking the time to tie it, but now showing that it can be done in under a minute is a game changer. Thanks!
Unfortunately without cinching up the knot after the first half hitch, this knot will slip occasionally and come undone. Ask me how I know. You need to pull really hard on the lines after the first half hitch until it changes colour so the braid bites into the leader. Then you finish off with the remaining half hitches and rizutto.
Awesome way to tie the FG, I normally tie similar to Salt Strongs version with a couple of differences but will definitely be trying this way next time 👌 great video mate and well explained
I just spent so much time (too much) trying to learn the triangle plait part; learned it on my own then pressed play on the video just to see a POV angle showing it easily :). Thank you either way this method is awesome and can do it in any condition which makes a knot useful to me or not.
Coming back to this a couple years on. Can confirm that I have KNOT yet beaten 53secs (pun intended)…. see ya again in a couple more years (by the way great demo. The best on the tinterweb)
So I have been trying to practice this knot. I finally got one to look like it's supposed to. I do the first half hitch. I moisten and tighten it. I comfirm the coils dug in cause the braid changed colors. I do 2 more half hitches. I do the risotto finish. I got to test the strength and it comes undone entirely. What did I do wrong?
for all the guys with no teeth make a loop in your braid loop to your reel handle your drag keeps tention on your knot you can weave the leader onto the braid with both hands
This is a poor way to tie the FG as keeping the braid wraps super tight around the leader is very important for a good knot. That's why I tie my braid to a solid object and use my rod to tension the line. You can't get the line that tight with your fingers.
nice , does this knot work on 20lb braid going to 10lb fluro , i tried and doing something wrong , its like the line braid isnt wrapping around the fluoro , but will practice till i I get it , thanks for the video
I've watched probably 10 different FG videos, and the RUclips decided to show me this one. If you just found this, luck you. This is the last FG video you will ever need to watch. Thanks Matt "some Jimmy won't believe" lol
This is the method I have been using to tie FG for years. But it only works on thicker leaders. For thinner leaders 20lb or less, you will probably still need a tool like the Seiko dachii knot assist 2.0.
"FG KNOT in under a Minute" ....15.5min video, instruction starts 3min in... | Knowledgeable linesman but could work on the efficiency of presentation - Your doing good mate, no worries
Try as I might I can't get this to work for me.... I'm just fingers and thumbs 🤣. Could be because I'm trying it with 12lb braid and 8lb Fluoro. Will keep trying as this looks way easier than the standard ways of tying the FG.
So I tried to figure this out and I struggled at the beginning. Then I saw your face looking down the line, excellent. It takes so many less wraps to make this not stick. A freshwater fisherman. Usually use 15 lb braid on 12 lb fluoro. Little trickier with thinner lines. But it's excellent
Strong work ! 👍 Lol, don't be that guy. I'v been using the FG for sometime now. I'm going out to the garage right now to try it this way. I've been making it to difficult. I do use much lighter fluorocarbon leader and braid while jigging for lake trout.
Still am not sold on the FG. Yeah it goes through the guides well, but I have had the mono break off at the joint. Maybe I overtightened? Not sure what happened. Both the mono and braid were rated at 30. Thanks.
Mean for my girls they love fishing and I love going fishing with my girlfriend beautiful buddy thanks for your knots it sounds like knot thank you buddy 🎣💯🍌 it's a good luck simbal for many fishing trips and knots
So beginning of the video, well i wrote what i thought. However, by the end you turned into what seems like a good dude. Maybe your old lady had just jacked up your mood or someone else was being a Richard and it had you acting in some kind of way. Kinda weird. Anyway, A+. 🤙
Is it worth knocking out guide inserts. Have had Albright and crazy Alberto knock out rings. That really sucks. Never had them fail me. Just use fg for insurance from breaking on snags and protecting my guides.
Point of view would've been better for people wanting to actually learn bud . Also why you making a pentagram with the line on your left hand 😂? There is a much better and easier way of doing the fg knot but you're lucky people like your GT videos . Good stuff
Great video but with respect I think you have glossed over a real important aspect of the FG. It works well because the braid actually digs into the mono, holding it. To achieve that the knot has to be tightened pretty hard and slowly. When you do it you can actually see it dig in and change colour.
Ahh you were just shaking to make it look like you were pulling hard 🤣 just kidding great video really simplified it, best way I’ve seen to keep the fg knot to the KISS (keep it simple stupid) method
honostly, i don't get the time thing there.... if i happened to spend 1, 2, 3 or even 5 minutes making a knot for whatever.... if the knot comes out perfect (or close to that) than it be fine since casting will improve and i won't lose fish. well worth the time i'd say ..... nice explenation though :)
Thanks for the great step by step explanations and the simple techniques used. I have watched a few videos and didn't even try to do this knot as they lost me. Great camera work also. Made it very easy to see what to do. Very much appreciated!
Sorry, I’m ‘that’ guy. I tried for a half hour and couldn’t get the first ‘twist’ right. My wife came down and got it on the first try. I should quit and stick to worms and bobbers. Nice video, though. I’m glad for the guys who can do it.
Don't know if his will work for me - I like a 10 pound fluorocarbon leader with 30 pound braid. I'll try it, but don't think my leader will be stout enough.
Man i've learned tieing fg the hard way and way too complicated and you realy explained it the easy way, by the way it was 53 seconds on my count 💪 . Thx for sharing ur experience with us
I have seen that way before by a guy at the tackle shop, this step by step will help a lot. The Rosuto knot at the end we do completely differently but that is fine, all it is there for is to tidy up knot and stop it fraying going through the guides.
I've seen a few videos on the FG knot, and I can't I understand why this one has received so much positive feedback. This method seems unnecessarily convoluted. It's really not that difficult a knot to tie.
Great video and looks and easier way to tie it but does it work just as well on thinner lines ie .2mm 20lb braid to tapered leader that is 0.35mm at main line end, think that will be too thin to get a good grip on the Mono without damaging it too much. This is for surfcasting with 5 ounce leads.
I'm evidently learning impaired when it comes to knots as even this seems to go wrong for me. What tends to happen is that it turns from being the braid wrapped around the flouro to spots where the flouro is sort of doubled up and wrapped around the braid, if that makes sense. I'm using 8lb flouro leader so I'm wondering if thats just too small for this technique.
Your knot is excellent and fast. But you talk too much.. Making the knot more than 1 minute. Anyways, gibing your link to another youtuber who claims his knot is fastest.
I have been dreading changing over to an FG because it seemed harder then a slim beauty but this video changed my mind. I am easing myself into jigging and with much heavier leader I have no choice but to move to the FG. My dread is now replaced by excitement. Thanks for posting this. Thanks a bunch!
Very cool way to tie it for sure. I've found that almost all the methods for the FG seem to fail when tying 10lb power pro braid to 20 lb fluorocarbon though. All my heavier lines work perfectly with the knot though.
I think you need at minimum twice the thickness of leader to braid or it will not grip and work right, was mentioned elsewhere, hence 10lb braid to 20lb line probably not enough difference.
Tried a few times, can't get the first step right.... just don't see good what you do in those twists... For you it's easy and fast, but we're dumb and slow, that's why we're here to learn :D
Will this work on mono to fluoro leader? I normally use a 2x uni but it's annoying at times as it can catch on the very end guide and make my casts hit the water in front of me. I know that FG on mono to mono can slip and it's not recommended, so one would assume it's the same for mono to fluoro as it doesn't have the grip that braided line gives...
I’ve watch slot of knots, that’s the one I like. I watched a pro fisherman do one where he did the triangle around his feet up to his waist and it was a friggen unreal knot. Like a spindle machine he was, got the video somewhere 👍
Gamechanger!! The holding of the loop in one hand I’ve never seen before and makes sense adding pressure to the plait!! I’m never gonna be lazy again!!
Awesome idea, makes more sense to me them the other tutorials I've watched, I'm sure anew adjustments for smaller line will be needed bit the principle is awesome
I've watched alot of fg knot tutorials on RUclips, and honestly this one makes the most sense.👌🔥🐟❤
Some tips so ya don't launch a 15 dollar jackhammer and watch your leader go flying like I did. Took me a few weeks, but I figured things out. Make sure the wraps are tight.
Try a double pitzen. Not sure what it's called in your neck of the woods. Go get them!
RIZZUTO IS GOOD WITH GARLIC BREAD AND WINE

Northern, if you do 15 times of his way, you are actually doing 30 of your old way - assuming you used to do over once, under once. He is doubling up - each one of his is two of yours. Nothing wrong with that, but you are actually doing more twists.
@@sunshinecycling I was following Briggsy's fg, it was 20 twists.. now with 15 twists, never encountered a problem with it yet.. 😊
Has anyone tied this technique with 10lb braid and leader , can’t seem to stop the leader from bending with the twist ?!
I can't do it on light line either.
Don’t take so long to get there
This has made doing a FG alot simpler for me. Way easier than the way i used to do it.
Can you tie it the same way with 6lb braid and leader?
First I've seen a FG done like this, was spinning me out at first 😂 will have to give it a crack good work 👌
Now try FG knot with 6bl line and see how difficult it becomes.
Yeah... Try that with thin lines... 😵💫
Nice and more simple approach. Would rather still do the Modified Albright. #TightLines
Definitely not a rizutto finish , that is just a 4 turn hitch , but a good tutorial on fg ,do you tighten to excess to make braid change color .
yeah i also called it a giant granny knot haha tighten after braid and mono hitches and then finish with braid to braid hitches
Patronising tone. If you snipped a knot of blokes I know you’d have no teeth left
They could always get out of his boat if they’re that upset
Thanks bro👍my new knot for a lifetime 🎣🤙
“FG-knot in under a minute”
*makes 15 minute video.
Fg knot takes under a minute. Video is 15 minutes. Skip!
Or you watch an excellent 15 minute instructional video and learn how to tie an FG knot in under a minute. What a knob.
I just spent so much time (too much) trying to learn the triangle plait part; learned it on my own then pressed play on the video just to see a POV angle showing it easily :). Thank you either way this method is awesome and can do it in any condition which makes a knot useful to me or not.
Good knot , Tanks , Bro .👍
Coming back to this a couple years on. Can confirm that I have KNOT yet beaten 53secs (pun intended)…. see ya again in a couple more years (by the way great demo. The best on the tinterweb)
fg never worked for me. I'm using a 30lbs braid to 15lbs flouro, it just doesn't bite into the leader
By far the best all round fisherman in Australia. Everything done with class and quality. Good on ya brother keep it up. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
"Basically my right hand doesn't move" "My right hand does nothing" 😂
Look at your right hand and wrist, it's definitely moving..
Thanks Matt
"some Jimmy won't believe" lol
This is the method I have been using to tie FG for years. But it only works on thicker leaders.
For thinner leaders 20lb or less, you will probably still need a tool like the Seiko dachii knot assist 2.0.
have been trying to do this on 20lb test braid and 15lb test flouro for about an hour now and still can't manage to get past the twisting step
Lol, don't be that guy.
Thanks for the lesson mate wondering what your go to knot is for your lures do you use the same for jigs as you do for your big stick baits?
the most simple loop knot
No worries mate I have just been using a uni knot. I have tried a few loop knots just didn’t know which to use.
I still can't get it started right. But this video makes so much sense . I'm using 12lb Floro though. Freshwater where I'm from that's plenty.
Thankyou, I always thought that alternating the half hitches was a waste of time and just complicates the knot further, great vid.
I'm right handed also, and have always seen the triangle on the right hand. Gonna try it and probably stick with it. Thank you.
Love it, good knot, Thanks.
Since it’s blowing it’s tits off up here on Thursday Island looks like I’m playing with some leader and mono today. Cheers for that one!.
Yah Matty! Imma try your method ASAP! 🤙🤙🤙 I'll probably re-tie more often😂🤙🤙🤙👍👍👍
I've watched a few ways and I must say this is by far the simplest. I'll give it another go. Thanks Matt. Yep, it works. You bloody ball biter.
I'm sorry you had to subject your right hand to that much pain to prove FGs are good knots. People should just KNOW that they are.
Awesome idea, makes more sense to me them the other tutorials I've watched, I'm sure anew adjustments for smaller line will be needed bit the principle is awesome
You're the 2nd person I've seen tie it this way,... Well, the 3rd since I copied the first guy but you're definitely the fastest.
