Himmel's feelings for Frieren felt like pure unfettered love. I think for Himmel just having her remember he existed and that his affection for her was as boundless as the skt was the goal he wanted within the ten year journey whilst defeating the demon king. It may have been unrequited love but like Frieren kept saying it was but a grain of sand on the beach to her and that's why he didn't want to burden her and just hold his love for her in the purest way he can like a true romantic....just not be overbearing about his love for her.
Lots to agree with here 👏🏻 I feel that “Frieren” as a series, is many things, but one which I think gets overlooked: I believe it is a love story which spans beyond the life of one of its central characters: Himmel. Remember where Frieren is heading in her quest: to the far north, to find the legendary land of Aureole, where she hopes she will find Himmel’s spirit (and presumably tell him everything she never said when he was alive). Maybe I am a soppy old romantic, but I wonder if the pair will finally be “reunited”?
First of all, there is nothing wrong with being "a soppy old romantic", we need more not less of all that! But your theory of the story ending might be accurate. This is Frieren's second adventure journey and they are headed for Aureole. I for one can imagine Frieren confessing her love to Himmel's spirit because she is carrying a weight around her heart. We saw that in the lost ring which called her his beloved. She at various times takes out the ring, and examines it wordlessly. The ring in Frieren makes an obvious trope reference to another story of a ring.
@@folcwinep.pywackett8517 This is exactly how I see it - I wonder, if everything comes to pass, and Frieren reaches Aureole and finds Himmel’s spirit there (and possibly, those of Fllamme and every other loved one she has lost?)… what if she is given the choice to give up her earthly existence and remain with Himmel in “heaven”? It would seem the natural conclusion to it all 😇

I don't think that the feeling Frieren has towards Himmel is love... I think that she is basically going to tell him 2 things - first, she will apologize for not taking her time to know him, and second, she will tell him that he actually had a deep impact on her life, because basically, Himmel died thinking that to Frieren he was just a meaningless encounter. Himmel is precious to her, but is admiration and gratitude, rather than love... We don't even know if Frieren is even capable of romantic feelings. She truly is a different species having a very different life experience than humans do.
@@davidgreen5994 Yes, you might be right. Hard to say. As Frieren herself says, love and romance, are not very central to the lives of Elves, but they do get in the mood so to speak because they do procreate if rarely. Frieren, when she was rescued by Flamme, is a very young Elf so at least in some number of years, she was recently born. Visual clues as to what is going on in Frieren is the beloved ring that Himmel gave to Frieren, and the earrings that she begins to wear when she joins Himmel's adventure. This symmetry of rings is mostly visual. She constantly pulls out the ring and looks at it, turning it over in her hands, and for a 1000 years after the death of Flamme, Frieren only starts to wear Flamme's Red teardrop earrings when she joins Himmel's party. The earrings point to Frieren's ears which in Elves are extremely sensitive and play a role in Elvish romance. I think Frieren, Fern, and Stark will reach Aureole, and because all three have tragic backstories of total loss, meeting with all their loved ones, could be highly emotional for the characters and for the fans. We will see how the author, Kanehito Yamada, brings his story to an end. So far I have faith in this author, and I believe he could deliver an extremely emotional ending.
I like that it is shown he goes out of his way to do things for Frieren that won't mean anything until long after he's dead. He thought things through even his own mortality. He never had to tell her he was in love he did the most to prove it. That's also why he was dissatisfied with her not going to the new years sun rise. He knew it would be a memory she could cherish long after the adventure ended. He was looking out for her far more than she was looking out for herself.
Himmel exemplifies the concept of chivalric love: loving chastely from afar, the beauty in the desiring but not in the possessing. He knew she wouldn't--or couldn't--understand or return his feelings and he chose to love her anyway, to be the kind of person who left an indelible imprint on her heart. Excellent review of Himmel and Frieren. Certainly Himmel was in love with Frieren, but falling in love and Romance are not a thing with Elves for the simple reason that if they were like Humans, there would now be an Elf standing on every square foot of land available. And that is the problem that Frieren faces at Himmel's funeral, and is the motive for her second adventure, to understand Human love. One fan theory holds that Frieren, Fern, and Stark reach Aureole and all three speak with their loved ones, and especially Frieren completes her learning about love. One symmetry on-going is the growing relationship between Fern and Stark which types that of Frieren and Himmel.

It’s easy to interpret why he didn’t confess more clearly. He was afraid of the response, and he also knew that it would hurt much more to her, it would be a selfish act on his part. Imagine, you know she’s basically immortal compared to you and you choose to be together right? So you’re basically putting the sadness and sorrow all on her from losing a loved one, and that WILL torment her for the rest of her unbelievable long life, and possibly never move on from that since Elf’s don’t really feel the need to continue their species even though they know they’ll be extinct soon. While Himmel on the other hand, he won’t experience the sadness of losing his love interest, and from his perspective she will continue always young and pretty as he slowly withers away. It’s an unfair trade. That’s why he put his love aside in fear of that destiny for her sake, but despite this she still cried at his funeral…
In my opinion, I think she liked him too but realized it to late bc I'm sorry, but I'm not thinking nonstop about the guy I only see as a friend or respect. I think there must be something but he 100% loved her and he didn't really hide it
Watching Frieren Beyond Journey's End, I am reminded of the introduction to humans to the DnD 5e rulebook. Humans live short and fleeting lives, especially as compared to elves and dwarves. Instead of dedicating one's venerable lifespan to a single cause, humans build institutions and ideologies to immortalise their legacy, becoming symbols and stories of inspiration to countless other individuals who will rise to the occasion and take the torch. In this way, humans leave their mark on history not through themselves, but through their radiance and trust in others. Himmel reminds me of a DnD Paladin. His strength came from his charm, his ability to influence others through his actions and personality. As Frieren aptly put, Himmel "is a ray of light", guiding others even decades after his time. His legend will live and shape the world for much longer than he ever could. Although that too, will one day die, as I'm sure Kraft will attest to.
Heiter was the only member of Himmel's group who didn't nearly die to stupidly embarrassing circumstances in thise ten years. Heiter was just hungover.

I don't think so, if you watch some recent new eps then frieren already explained that elf lack romantic and reproductive interest. Unlike human due to longer lifespan elf view them as a waste of time since their partner/family will die anyway.
That is just Frierens inexperience with love, remember that she lost her family at a very young age. If Elves really had no sex drive whatsoever then they would have died out ages ago, as they still need to reproduce, they are long lived, but not truly immortal.@@lordtouchme77

While Himmel impacted Frieren after he died, I felt perplexed that Flamme didn't even left a single emotional impact towards Frieren despite living (and seemingly travelling) together with her till she passed away.
The difference is that Frieren isn’t sad that Himmel died, it’s that she didn’t spend enough time getting to know him. With Flamme she spent as much time as she could with her, so she has no regrets.
@@xavierluna3888while she was a millennial years younger when she's with Flamme, it should at least impacted her even by a little bit. @@farkler4785 Surely by the time Flamme died she should've realised she didn't understand human fragility and how short their life span is. It seams quite clear to me that main reasons that Himmel didn't openly declare his felling to her were: 1. She was not emotionally/mature enough and he did not want to pressure her. 2. He loved her so much that he did not wanted to married her and then die and leave Frieren broken-hearted for the rest of her long life.

Anime logic applies. I think everyone's overthinking it, Himmel looking so old is just an emphasis on how human lives are so short and to effectively contrast him against Frieren who looks the same.
Red a comment that said Himmel died without kids, heir, and without ever being married . .
Just waiting for her
And I feel that.
In my opinion, I think she liked him too but realized it to late bc I'm sorry, but I'm not thinking nonstop about the guy I only see as a friend or respect. I think there must be something but he 100% loved her and he didn't really hide it
I absolutely havent teared up on every single amazing episode. 😇
🥲🥲
A person has gone but memory stay forever.
Heiter was the only member of Himmel's group who didn't nearly die to stupidly embarrassing circumstances in thise ten years. Heiter was just hungover.
How on earth that corrupt cynical drunkard priest got the goddess blessing, make me think the goddes herself is a troll.
And also randomly snatches the party's traveling fees to buy drink, or so I've heard 😂
I feel sad whenever I am reminded that Himmel is gone for good… that despite the good memories, he is still gone…
Until meet in heaven ..
... him getting floored by Fieren's blown kiss....confims his feelings.
I've been watching this anime. I'm quite surprised by how much I'm enjoying it.

See you 10 years. I have suspicion we will watch this series again...and again.
I'm going to cry all over again..
frieren was one of the best mangas I've ever read, and i was so glad that an anime was made and yoasobi made the op song. if you could, i'd recommend you reading and reviewing pandora hearts, a very underrated manga that was published 15 years ago!
Yes! Pandora Hearts is one of my favourite manga of all time... It's that good...
@@tharateptrongpanyachot6046 i hope you can do a review on that, i'll watch it for sure!
The OP sucks, the ending rocks.
"Was"? The manga is probably not even 2/3 done, a new chapter released this week.
@@zigazdovc6175 huh what are you talking about?? the manga ended ten years ago😭😭
I just hope Frieren feels the same way and realizes it later on
I don't think so, if you watch some recent new eps then frieren already explained that elf lack romantic and reproductive interest.
Elfes should be capample of feeling love and reproducing and im 100 % sure that she loved him also. We will have a scene where you can see it.
@@bertrecht913SPOILER ALERT FROM MANGA
In Chapter 117-118 Himmel and Present Frieren (she accidentally went to the past in this arc) are under the influence of an illusion that shows the dream they desired the most but knew it wasn’t possible, and it was their Marriage
"Himel was a true hero"... bro wanna kill a kid for drawing first blood at Frieren's skirt lol
Now that's a valid reason to kill lol
Himmel was a fake hero, but he had killed demon king
@@lmonzz9946 still a hero nonetheless. Fake or not, if you do it, then you're a hero.
@@lmonzz9946either he really was a fake hero, or the prophecy was the fake one for saying that only true hero would be able pull out the holy sword to defeat the demon king. But nonetheless, as the guy above said, he succeeeded in killing the demon king.
@@withclarity1197
Even a nobody can kill the Demon King. The Demon King is just an individual, not a god.
Himmel wasn't chosen to be a hero. He chose to be a hero. And he lived up to it every day of his life
All I can say is he's the Goat 🐐 after reading the latest chapter I was broken that he really did love Frieren that much
The time i was convinced that himmel loved frieren is that part when he gave her a ring. Bro proposed and she didnt understood. Bro even stayed single for life.
This is the most touching part but frieren didnt understand the lotus meaning.
Ever since I read the manga (even before the anime came out) on the part where Himmel wanted to flip Frieren's skirt (too) I knew he was in love with her lolz
The new chapter confirms it... it's sad
he wanted statues of himself and the party everywhere so she can see them wherever she goes
I like Himmel a lot, I can't help but to see him as a dear dead friend just as Frieren does.
Himmel also means Heaven not just sky. Which opens other possibilities as well.
While Himmel impacted Frieren after he died, I felt perplexed that Flamme didn't even left a single emotional impact towards Frieren despite living (and seemingly travelling) together with her till she passed away.
I mean, she was a 1000 years younger, so it makes sense imo.
Not to mention she was shown only cried when Himmel died but not when Heither died. Kinda one sided emotional scene despite them being together.
I do hope the manga didn't end with sudden romance when Frieren clearly stated that elves hardly develop romantic feeling due to them having long lives (more or less context).
@@farkler4785 Surely by the time Flamme died she should've realised she didn't understand human fragility and how short their life span is.
Still it is kinda one sided that she grieved for Himmel but not for Heither. I do aware she spent with Heither's last moment but still not showing any grieve is kind of weird despite they also being in the same party for years.
I do hope this doesn't suddenly ends with unreal and cheap romance in the manga (currently reading the manga) where after reminiscing her memory she suddenly be like "I hardly realize you're in love with me but I'll love you anyway" or "elves didn't usually develop romantic feelings in such a short time but I'll just love you anyway".
i think she did hold Flamme dearly. Remember when they encountered a demon who uses your love ones ghost to lure you in. Flamme used to be that ghost for her, now it’s Himmel.
Man there should be series about their journey as well
I like how you rephrased a statement 5 times, repeat a clip 6 times and went to gather 100k+ views
Disliked, was promised his anatomy and wanted to learn how his digestive system worked.
Instead made me depressed.
Himmel's organs and bodily fluids are depressed
Humans having children is a form of immortality as the baton is passed from one generation to the next.
No it isn’t. It’s the creator who provides immortality. The father of mankind who wanted sons and daughters.
Himmel was the hero not the people want but the hero they need
He loved her, but even a millennium old, she was not old enough to respond. He loved her enough not to force it.
Himmel not only changed Frieren but also me
This is a great show.
Himmel wasn’t the hero the heroes sword was looking for but where others would have given into despair and given up he chose to embrace the fact he wasn’t the one to pull the heroes blade from the stone and still went on to slay the demon king making Himmel a true hero
About 20 seconds in it seems like there are spoilers, but I clicked thinking this was just a theory. Might not hurt to clarify/tag if this contains spoilers or is just a theory, somewhere, if either is indeed the case.
It seams quite clear to me that main reasons that Himmel didn't openly declare his felling to her were:
1. She was not emotionally/mature enough and he did not want to pressure her.
2. He loved her so much that he did not wanted to married her and then die and leave Frieren broken-hearted for the rest of her long life.
And now she will fell the same felling after her 2 friend die befor her, that is the curse for loong age creature
How did himel age so fast? Like tf? In just 60-70 years of age he started looking like a 90 yr old man 😅
There's a theory that that cursed horn thing left to him may have accelerated his aging due to exposure to it
@@aurorapaisley7453 yep because the last time we saw him he was like 18-20 years old? Add it to 50 years it's not much at all but he looks like old master yoda from star wars lol
@@KamiSamaisPissed umm no, he started the journey around 16-18 yo, the journey last 10 years, so he should be around 26-28 yo
He was a vegan. Not enough calcium and insufficient vitamins and minerals
I am hoping they would make a prequel of Frieren and her party how they defeated the demon king
The story is set up so that the events from their past journey are revealed to us as Frieren continues her adventure 🙂
Fun fact himmel also means sky in danish
He was prepared to love but frieren wasn't💔
you are the first one in a video to recognize that all the Names in this Anime are in German or german words.
Petition to play Tears in Heaven when Frieren gets to heaven.
Actually confirmed by the dream delusion he got recent chapter
To Frieren, « love » is a « rush feeling » cause you know you have only one life, a short life, as a human that is. Which she never quite understood
man was hoping this would explain why this mf shrank 3-4Ft by getting old, humans don't lose length, we just compress, this mf straight up lost half himself and it hasn't been addressed.
Anime logic applies. I think everyone's overthinking it, Himmel looking so old is just an emphasis on how human lives are so short and to effectively contrast him against Frieren who looks the same.
Everyone compares him to Heiter but Heiter is a priest with divine protection, he's meant to live longer than typical humans.
can somebody please give me the name of the anime
Frieren mourned the death of Flamme way before Himmel.
