There is wonderful video essay called "When you tell an entire story in 9 minutes". It explains how Frieren is written and why it has no fillers. The writing follows something called "bracketed ideas". The show is structured in a way that it builds its setups very meticulously and preemptively which allows for the pay-off to be very satisfying and not artificially shoehorned afterwards. Not only this but the pay-offs does not end up there. They continues being explored and having impact in other episodes which add nuances to the themes, character and the world. And this is why there are no fillers in this show. Because everything - from Fern and Stark catching fish, to Frieren saying random quote like "I am used to loosing things" have meaning in the whole picture. Another thing is that the show is grounded and realistic. A lot of people fall into the trap of the anime tropes while watching it - expecting power levelling, flexing and screaming who is who, which lead to someone getting stronger etc. But here the struggles are internal. For example very few people noticed how throughout the series Fern was shown several times to pass very nervously between ridges on wooden logs. This represents her lack of confidence in herself. The relationships are very human like, instead of being hyperbolic and on the nose. Every action has consequences in the world the show is developed. For example Frieren saying "I know" to Fern in ep.17 when holding her hand for 2nd time. We were shown preemptively how Frieren still see Fern as a kid, it showed why Fern felt embarrassed, it gave us their perspectives and also added Stark's one and the origin of holding the hand. So when Frieren said this quote it was build comprehensively. There was no need of 5 mins of verbal explanation or internal dialog who feels what. We saw how the setup and payoffs were build in front of us. This is something which is hard to find in other animes. And I watched over 500 of them.
you know the phrase jack of all trades master of none? frieren is master of all trades literally every aspect from the story, characters, themes, music, art and animation, everything is an 11/10
I absolutely love how in depth you go with the background of the anime and manga. It’s clear how passionate you are about it and it makes this the best video on Frieren I’ve seen.
As a boy who watched and read manga since I was 5 / 10, Frieren gave me a feeling of cozyness, healing, wonder and astounded. I mainly watch and read because of the action and the powers, but when I laid my eyes on Frieren for the first time, I flippin cried because of how well the story was written so far. It's such a digest, an adventure and I have learned so much lessons and perspectives that I can't even see on my own personal experiences. This is by far what I call the best anime of all time. And no one can change my mind nor take that away from me.
47 years old here , reading manga and watching anime since I was a kid. And I fully agree that Frieren can be considered the best anime so far, It's been almost perfect, it shows lots of love was put into it.

Commenting for the almighty algorithm, this was a great dissection of the love, care and professionals involved in crafting this gem of a manga into a masterpiece of animation.
Great video! I cannot imagine how Studio Madhouse managed to produce such high-quality visuals every single week for 6 months. That's a tight time constraint. It's an incredibly impressive feat... And I've been thinking that the scenes where Frieren gets stuck in a mimic felt out of place in the story. They seem kind of jarring in such a serious narrative. But now that I know that this started as a gag manga, those mimic scenes suddenly begin to make sense... Looks like the author wanted a trace of that original silliness to survive after the big change he made.
I was burned out by the seemingly endless isekai set in fantasy worlds but Frieren is a bright shining diamond that made me enjoy anime again. The art style, music and story are just what I have been yearning to experience from anime. Yes, most of them are staples in anime but they are wonderfully mixed together in Frieren. One of the little things that I love about Frieren are the eyes, or rather, the looks and gazes the characters gave to one another or things. Again, gazes are pretty common in anime but in Frieren every gaze adds additional emotional weight to character interactions or a scene.
I've been watching anime since the 1970s, and I have to say, I do not disagree with the premise that Sousou no Frieren is a strong contender for "Best Anime of All Time" (in 2024). However, a few facts need to be recognized. First of all, beginning about 10 years ago, there was a massive advancement in the median quality of anime, thanks to the widespread adoption of modern computer animation techniques. Second, the current works which have garnered so much critical acclaim are standing on the shoulders of giants, and the quality of animation is not the only aspect of the manga, light novel, and anime multimedia industry that has improved. Equally responsible for the increase in artistic quality is the quality and subject matter of the writing. We are currently living in a new Golden Age in the industry. The number of titles in the past few years that have blown the doors of the conventions of the industry is astounding. Frieren is just the latest and greatest of them.
2023-2024 gave us so many good anime but frieren is definitely the best anime amongst them. Bleach TYBW, re:zero, dandadan all of them were close second

Wonderful, beautiful, and accurate analysis of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. As soon as the English Manga became available, many manga readers began to excitedly praise the work, so I hopped on board with VOL 1 to see what was going on, and bang, blew me across the room. I didn't think that the anime would be successful, because it does have a very SOL pace and feel and that usually doesn't sell the the anime fandom so I was surprised by all the world wide popularity (which is still growing by the way)! Best anime of all time could certainly be argued, but I will say without hesitation that Frieren is my favorite anime of all time. Easily. Great video!

any "best thing of all time" is indeed the best thing of all time if and only if it is still the best thing of all time decades afterwards. we'll see about frieren.
I've been alive for 22 years since my parents introduced me to their childhood 70s anime and I've watched probably over 3k titles of anime... My favorite of all time is Natsume Yuujinchou and the closest to ever come to topping that is Frieren The two series has very similar story telling... Both use flashback the same(like I can't emphasize it enough how similar these two shows use flashbacks), both has two stories from two different times(one is Frieren and the hero from the past the other is Natsume's Troublemaker Grandma), both use time and how it affects long lived creatures and mortals, (Freiren are Elves and Natsume is with Yokai), both are very fantastical in a different kind of way.
Btw I've already read the Manga way before the anime but they really did justice in it's adaptation. The main difference I can see with Frieren and Natsume besides the Obvious ones is that The flashbacks in Frieren focus more on the people with her during that time. While the flashbacks in Natsume focus more on Natsume's Grandma and what she did with the yokai, his Grandma who the yokai keeps mistaking as him due to Yokai not being able to interpret gender not to mention his Grandma looks like a gender bent version of him.
As many great works get overlooked i cant say if its the best. EG Moribito Guardian of the Spirit exists, and not many seem to know about this masterpiece. Maybe because it doesnt have the epic batlles and the FMC is 30 instead of a teen. Also based on a novel instead of a manga.
Frieren, for me, it's like Arcane. I can't wait for season 2 to drop off, just to have an excuse to rewatch the first season. Otherwise, great video, more oriented around music stuff.
for me "Best Anime of All Time" is a bit of stretch... but its great anime no doubt about that! a perfect break from mainstream action or lively anime bcause of its slow pace, chill vibe beautiful scenes and amazing action scenes.
Its some serious bullshit that people want to label a single season of an incomplete show as the greatest of all time. I guess they haven’t learned their lesson after Promised Neverland or GOT.
Well, not really. Even without Season 2, this is still one of the greatest anime ever made. This first season alone has changed several people's lives.
In my opinion i think that to truly understand and enjoy the anime Frieren, you need to be mature, if you're looking for those only fighting shounen anime/manga then this isnt for you
Frieren is great. Best anime of all time though? Nah. You're just engagement farming. Guess you win because it got me talking. Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Black Lagoon even unfinished beat Frieren easily. So does FMA, with the caveat that you watch up to greed in the original, and from greed on in brotherhood. The original does a much better job at explaining the early series, and then ran out of source material after greed. Brotherhood's early series assumes that you watched the original and glazes over significant plot points and misses entire character introductions. Hughes' death is the best example of it. In the original Hughes has a lot more character development, so when the phone booth scene happens you actually feel something about it. Brotherhood skips almost all of the character development, and then all of a sudden afterwards you're expected to feel something for a character that was only barely seen in comparison. Counting movies, because they're still anime, The entire Miyazaki catalogue, Akira. I would put Frieren on the calibur of Mushoku and Demon Slayer. It's great, maybe even one of the best, but there's plenty out there better than it just off the top of my head.
Frieren is absolutely masterful in terms of visuals, sound, and script. It has also touched many people's hearts and it became No. 1 on MAL for several months. Universal praise from viewers and critics alike. Thus, based on these accomplishments, one could argue that it's the greatest anime of all time. But perhaps it is pointless to give this title to a single anime, so let's just say that it is among the greatest. Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Fullmetal Alchemist are also among the greatest, but Black Lagoon is not. It consists of edgy gun violence, overly deranged gangsters, way too much sensationalism, rule of cool, and a few psychological themes to spice things up. A little better than schlock.
I have no patience for anime. Most of it is trash. Most of the ones anime fans call out are simply a better grade of trash. But Frieren: Beyond Journey's End transcends the garbage from which it arose. This show is a masterpiece of storytelling, it ranks with Lord of the Rings.
Naah i think that's your emotions taking, ...Frieren is just about as good as FMAB or any other Great Shonen manga. I think since the chaotic Era in which it released backed by the giant studio like MadHouse; made This as a great refreshment from all the crazy shit. ..and I'll rate frieren as a solid 8/10 Anyday when Compared to serie like DanDaDan, JJK, etc serie which are good but they clearly only deserve 7.5/10 at Best. New anime fans love to overrate anime in general, and that's the reason why well written novel stories are being Compared to comic books. It's sad how much the taste has fallen, you know what Their are any Shonen who accomplish what Frieren does but yes that's not their focus entirely. Frieren isn't revolutionary, it's just ANOTHER greatly adapted anime of current era, and lots of anime get great adaption nowadays
Frieren is not even n1 of the season, jesus christ anime watchers nowadays... Same shit happened with Kimetsu (lol) when first aired and Jujutsu. You guys need to touch some grass or watch more anime, you can't be this sensitive to the "new thing" every fkn time.

It is one of its kind.
love this :-3
LIKED!!!
That ended too soon.
In my opinion i think that to truly understand and enjoy the anime Frieren, you need to be mature, if you're looking for those only fighting shounen anime/manga then this isnt for you
It's mid

True, Friern is not even close to Cowboy Bebop and FMA. It's an OK anime, but not great.
I have no patience for anime. Most of it is trash. Most of the ones anime fans call out are simply a better grade of trash. But Frieren: Beyond Journey's End transcends the garbage from which it arose. This show is a masterpiece of storytelling, it ranks with Lord of the Rings.
Naah i think that's your emotions taking,
...Frieren is just about as good as FMAB or any other Great Shonen manga.
You draw a line in the sand when you use Subs as an English speaker, Such disrespect for a proper adaption is incredibly ugly. Blocked.
Frieren is not even n1 of the season, jesus christ anime watchers nowadays... Same shit happened with Kimetsu (lol) when first aired and Jujutsu. You guys need to touch some grass or watch more anime, you can't be this sensitive to the "new thing" every fkn time.
subjective opinions are not objective facts try again
It’s nowhere near the best like AoT. So slow and boring I used it to sleep when I had insomnia following angina.
ur opinion holds no weight the moment u declared aot as one of the bests 🤷🏻♂️
@ what’s wrong with aot? The first half was a masterpiece imo. My second favorite following Death Note
I agree that AOT is a masterpiece, but it’s not argument to say you found it boring. That’s just a you problem and Frieren is still peak
