I can't tell you how much I love your videos. I'm a Yankee transplanted to Palm Springs California. Our best friends are 2 boys from Kentucky, and Tennessee who live nearby. While we do have a restaurant that serves the best buttermilk fried chicken, the owners are from Georgia, there is not a lot of Southern meals around town. So, when I have the guys over for dinner, I have mastered long cooked green beans, and excellent collard greens that they have said was as good, if not better than they got at home.
Thanks for doing Fried Green Tomatoes, I'm gonna surprise them with that side dish the next time we have them over for dinner.

During my mother's last illness, she had no appetite and it was hard to find things that she wanted to eat. One day, she said that she would like some fried green tomatoes. I raided my brother's garden, and she talked me through the cooking process; not quite so elaborate as this recipe, she was a very good, very minimalist cook. I think I fried up two or three tomatoes, and she ate most of them. I got a few small pieces and was so glad that she had something that appealed to her! Thanks, Ms Phyllis, for a good trip down memory lane!

Haven't had these in years. Great memories. My mom and aunt would stand and fry those up in the summer for ten kids. My aunts five kids and my moms five kids. We would line up in the kitchen and get one on a napkin and run out on the porch and eat them. All ten of us running in and out of the house grabbing them as fast as they fried them. My mom told me one time the neighbor said " You ten kids look like a bunch of hillbillies eating those things sitting on the porch like that. My mom said she told him, " Well that's good, because all them kids are hillbillies"........ So funny. 😀

He is a blessed man to have a wife who COOKS, frugal or not. So unusual these days. Watching these videos has reminded me that cooking simple, wholesome meals isn't that hard, it's just a matter of organization and taking the time and being physically with-it enough to stand in front of the stove for a while. I really enjoy watching Phyllis, and I wonder, watching her, if she's always been a success at whatever she's tried her hand at. She's so capable, and so calm and well-spoken.

    • @PhyllisStokes

Success to me is just a matter of continuing to try until you get it right, sometimes it takes a lot more effort than at other times. One of my total failures was in high school taking a course in Shorthand, I only made a C grade, I think the teacher just felt sorry for me and gave me that C.
I determined right then I would not be a secretary to anyone who required shorthand. I consider that course a great failure for me and see I'm still talking about it all these years later.

Hello Miss Phyllis enjoy your recipes so much. They remind me of my grandmother's and mom's cooking from the 50s onward. Instead of using all three glass bakeware you could put the flour and bread crumbs in gallon plastic storage bags. I also make the little cheese potatoe bread patties with the leftovers have always done it that way. Your sauce is like homemade thousand island dressing.

My neighbor grows tomatoes and for the last 2 years, she has brought me over 3-4, green ones, so I can make me some fried green tomatoes. Love them. I just dredge mine in an egg and milk mixture and then Louisiana fish fry that is seasoned. So good. Mama always made them with cornmeal. I'd beg for one of the green ones. Once and awhile, she'd let me go pick one off for myself. I love the tang they have. I also like them sliced a little thinner, but to each his own. You've gone and made me hungry again girl! And walla! A new recipe for cheese curds. Yum

Fried Green Tomatoes are So Stinking Amazing on a Hamburger/Cheeseburger! They're so good that they make you want to Sass ya Moma!!! Lol!!! There is a rest./bar nearby that makes celeb.named burgers! I forget who this one is named for, a local I'm sure, but it has burger, w/wo cheese, lettuce, fried green tomatoes, green onion, applewood bacon, and a sauce similar to the one you made but it had a kick to it, all on toasted something bun . IT came with hand cut fries. We also would order fried dill pickles-yummm! And to make it "taller "my husband would add a fried Vidalia onion ring on his burger! With all the fried things -we only eat this once a year, lol, maybe twice😉!!! SoooGood!!!

Fried green tomatoes are one of my favorite summer treats! I first had a burger with a fried green tomato on it 3 years ago in North Carolina! It was so good. I don't know why we never tried them together before, I know my Grandma would have loved the combination. I use her wooden handle, really sharp 4 tine fork to turn my fried green tomatoes just as she did and my Mother did also. Most every lady I knew as a child had a similar fork for turning more delicate fried foods. I am going to try those cheese fritters with my leftover breading, they looked good. A new recipe and one that keeps me from throwing out the breading is terrific! Well done.

I love fried green tomatoes. My mama used to cook them all the time because she always had plenty from her garden. Just a couple little tips for you though... mama used to add about 2 tablespoons of corn starch per cup of flour or cornmeal whenever she was breading something to fry. It keeps the coating from falling off into the oil or grease. Also, she always put her sliced tomatoes or squash and any other "watery" veggie in the colander then salted them, mixed them well and let them drain in the sink about 20 or 30 minutes. Sometimes she would rinse them off with cold water if she didn't want too much salt. Love your videos. I'm a new subscriber.

I was taught how to make them (tomatoes) the way my family did..but over the years, I have put my own spin on making mine...I use cornmeal and wondra flour or rice flour mixed with a little bit of cornstarch (crunch factor)..I soak mines first in a brine of sugar and salt, then bread them in seasoned buttermilk and then dredge in my seasoned cornmeal mixture..then fry. I serve mines with a BLT dip...plenty of diced fried bacon (a whole pack), finely diced red onions or fresh chives, mayo, chp.red tomatoes, shot of apple cider cvinegar, squeeze of honey, parsley, salt & cayenne pepper...oh, and a BIG fork!

Laura Pratt you can get them at Lucille's restaurants. I know it's not the same as homemade, but they are good. They have fried pickles too. I found a baked not fried recipe that I want to try.....if i can find the green tomatoes. Im in Los Angeles too 😊

I do hope your kemo is going well for you. I pray you aren't too sick from it! God Bless you and Mr. Bucky!

Miss Phyllis, thank you so much for the information about cracking eggs on a hard surface to avoid shells. One would think that at my age (67) years old, that I would know this. However, I have been cracking my eggs on the rim and then digging out the shells that have fallen into the bowl! Lol oh well, you live you learn. Anyway I wanted to tell you that I have been cracking my eggs on the counter top since you have given me that information and not one shell has fallen into the bowl.

I love fried green tomatoes...I get desperate for them in the summer and will even fry the red ones...my Grandmother used to fry the red ones and then she would remove them all from the skillet and make a gravy from the drippings and then put the fried tomatoes back in with the gravy...it was sooo good...she only did that with the red tomatoes...I guess because the red ones didn't hold together as well as the green ones. Oh, now I have that dry popcorn dust on my mind here...lol Oh, and they look sooo good...I am jealous now for sure...that is such a good idea...I would never have thought to put them on a hamburger!! I am so looking forward to try this now for sure. That is such a neat idea to use the leftover dipping stuff for those cheese patties...you are so smart, Phyllis...I just love your recipes...I have lots of them to try and I have tried a couple...more on that later...I am so glad that I found you. I used to watch this dear, sweet, little older lady on YT, Clara...she used to cook recipes from the Great Depression...she has since passed away, but I still watch some of her videos every now and then...I dearly loved her...she also had a calming voice and I could listen to her for hours too. I think you have created something amazing here, Phyllis...these cheese patties look awesome!!n Wonder what horseradish in that sauce would taste like...might be too strong for the tomatoes though...I knew those cheese patties would turn out awesome...I gotta try them now too!! WTG Phyllis!!

Fried Green Tomatoes! One of my favorites! I have never tried them on a hamburger, but that sounds like something that I need to try!
Also thanks for a good tip about discarding the grease after frying the tomatoes with the corn meal and it being hard to strain. I was going to fry some up in a Frydaddy cooker but will just use my cast iron pan instead. It takes less grease anyway! Speaking of grease, Ms Phyllis what oil or grease do you prefer for your frying?
    Thanks for sharing!

I love fried green tomatoes although I've not made them. I'd like to find some and try your recipe. They look SO good!!! Your little cheese puffs look tasty too. Nice save on the dipping baths which usually go to waste. As I was watching the video, I was thinking, how does Phyllis dispose of the used grease, and lo and behold you read my mind and told us. I save the glass jars from spaghetti sauce and such and keep them under the sink for jobs like this. Then I can toss them out in the trash without fear of making a big mess.

I have to agree with some of the others. I'm a new subscriber and I'm now addicted to how soothing your vids are and yummy. I'm from the south and a lot of these recipes and methods I'm very familiar with. I love the down to earth, no frills, no amped up goofy giddiness like some of these other vids and tutorials display. *seems fake *
    Good job!

Ms. Phyllis, what a brilliant way to use the rest of the mixture. I'll be trying it the next time I make fried eggplants and/or fried green tomatoes. I feel so wasteful when I have to toss it out. The fried green tomatoes look so delicious as well.

Thanks for sharing. My son went back home for the summer and came home with a green fried tomato recipe from my aunt. He did he's though, once he got home, with the firm red tomatoes cause we couldn't find the green. I'm so addicted. I use Italian seasoned bread crumbs. I would have loved to see you cut into them to see the consistency. I always wondered was I doing mine correctly (length of cook time). I'm defiantly gonna try the little fritters as well, isn't it awesome to stumble onto a recipe. ❤💯

Hello Ms Phyllis, I love making fried green tomatoes. It is a messy job though. Well worth it though. I don't like the fried food smell or cleanup. I was excited to see you are adventurous and try to make new recipes out of what was left. I like to do this as well. I find spending time with you soothing, interesting and fun. Thank you for the time and effort you put into the vlogs. 🌞

Phyllis there is a way to save and strain that grease, put your strainer over a container, put a paper towel in the strainer, then pour the grease in a little at a time , or if you have a large strainer that can hold it all, you can put it all in and just let it set till it drips through :) it works best while the grease is hot. Or you can use a cheese cloth if you have them then wash with dish soap to get the grease out of the cloth. :) Also you can save / freeze the leftover flour etc.. to use for the next thing you want to fry. Or you could use the flour to make a gravy to go with the meal.

I'll have to admit it - I liked the little cheese patties better than the fried green tomatoes and I love fried green tomatoes. I'll definitely be making the little cheese patties again. I think the whole key to their success was the addition of the potato flakes. I was really nervous the cheese would run all out in the hot grease but it didn't.
