    I think you are on the right path. Personally at this point I would be hesitant to sent it to omega and would also seek out a more local watchmaker who offers more personal service and I can communicate with and have a better idea of what may have happened and possibly how to prevent it from happening again Good luck and keep us posted I'm very curious about what went wrong

  • @edteach3r

    Rob, we have a watchmaker here in North Vancouver (International Watch Repair & Service) who disassembles the movement in it’s entirety, cleans everything by hand (no machine washing), reassembles it, lubricates it and then regulates your timepiece ... all for $250 Canadian (or thereabouts). I highly recommend Hisao Yokota and Danny to anyone interested, and can personally vouch for services on many of my watches throughout the years. He services from Rolex to Seiko. He is super busy though, and receives watches from all across Canada and those US; so get in touch with them to establish wait times.

    10 years ago, I sent my bond 300 to the omega dealer in Portugal and they wanted to charge €450 for a service. I refused, saying that the parts costed a fraction of the charge an that the labour did not justified the cost. They agreed and sent the watch back, defective. for that i payed half of the amount charged. i complained again, warning that i would be contacting Omega Switzerland. They repaired it free of charge. These orices complete defeat the concept of "quality" as it stops making sense. if you expect that spending a large amount expecting durability and reliability, you are wrong. A complete Sinn 103, at the factory costed me € 170, just for comparison. These luxury brands today are nothing more than wealth statement items. Dont buy a mercedes: buy Lexus.

      You have a valid argument. While many buy a Rolex or Omega and never have any actual problems, some do. Many end up with expensive nightmares and I myself had three Omegas that made me so angry I could spit. Right now I have two Omegas and my first Rolex (one and done), but I admit that if I ever have another problem I will dump the lot and stick to quartz. I should mention that last year my brand new Omega Sm300 Pro started running insanely slow after about a week on the wrist. Let me tell you, I was PEE'D OFF! Omega service told me to Fed-Ex to them (on their dime) and they actually pulled and serviced the movement. They suspected that someone had dropped the watch on a hard surface. Anyway, it's been hard to "Love" this one and that sucks. These G D things just break your heart.

    I have that watch in quartz. At the time I chose it over the skeleton hands version. I just couldn’t get on with skeleton hands. It went back to Omega for a battery replacement (100 bucks) recently, they said it needed a service, (350 bucks). I had it done and the watch came back mint. I also think it had a one year guarantee. I don’t know if your friend had a guarantee with his service. It’s a beautiful watch and on a sunny day it really pops. I live in the UK and my watch, twelve years ago, was £1000. Worth a lot more now but it’s a keeper.

    The best thing about those older models is that you can go fully independent when it comes to servicing. Like Rob mentioned, inside is a modified ETA 2892, so it won't be a huge problem for a good, experienced independent watchmaker to find out whatever is wrong with it, and of course, to service it properly without any prohibitive costs that official service would undoubtedly ask. So, go for it immediately and good luck with servicing that beauty!

  • @JeffreyMcMahon

    That is my favorite looking Omega model ever. Such a shame about the service costs. Two years ago I had the itch for the Tudor Black Bay Steel (still my fave Swiss watch) but was told it would cost over $800 to service every 5 years or so.

    I have the exact same problem with my Tudor Prince Oysterdate from the mid 70s, handed down from my father. Left it on my nightstand for a couple of months back in 2012 when I was recovering from an injury, and it never came back alive. Winds and rotor moves, but doesn't start. Couple of quotes I got were around the $1000CAD for a complete restoration since it's a 45 year old watch, so I haven't taken the plunge yet. Will be interesting to see and hear what the problem with the Omega is and how costly it is to fix.

  • @FrankLagendijk
    @FrankLagendijk 4 года назад +2

    Here is a thought.. how about replacing the movement with a modern and reliable ETA/Sellita movement? Or a Bulova quartz movement with sweeping hand? Kind of like a restomod for cars.

    • @matrixmirage2148
      @matrixmirage2148 4 года назад +1

      I doubt the hands would fit with a Bulova Quartz movement (the dial pin is slotted and machined to hold specific hands in a specific height and diameter hole in them)
      A basic (non-Omega) 2892-A2 is a good idea, though: it certainly fits, and if the date wheel, reverse bridge and rotor can be swapped, it would essentially be the same as a 1120 but without the regulation and fine-tuning to COSC specifications (which an experienced watchmaker could do)
      I wouldn't send the watch to Omega unless the crown tube and crown itself failed (ran into a case where I could've bought a 2531.80 for cheap, but the goddamn crown was broken: you can't source the part itself and even the replacement is hard and tedious)

  • @duckadiesel4182
    @duckadiesel4182 4 года назад +6

    Although this is an unfortunate event, this is why I love Omega, for $550 you pretty much get a brand new watch back. Technically you can pay $550 every 10 years and keep wearing 1 watch. It turns out to be much more cost effective than buying/selling/flipping gazillion watches. How old is this SMP (approximately)? Looks brand new :) Hopefully it can get repaired without too much trouble or additional cost.

There is no excuse for such shoddy work and performance. I am thinking this watch was serviced in NJ. That Omega service center is notoriously bad.
    At the end of the day Quartz is much safer. Just my two cents. The SM300's of that era can all be had in quartz versions. You can beat them like no watch has been beaten before and they will just keep going. It's why I have a SM 200 Pre-Bond.
