Some of these songs are like time machines. When I was about 7 or 8 years old in the early 70s, I'd get up with my mother at 3:00 am. We'd go to the warehouse to fill up the station wagon with newspapers to deliver, and then she'd drive around tossing the papers to people's driveways while listening to her favorite music before dropping me off at school. This was one of the songs I recall from that time 50 years ago.

I didn't think I could hold a grudge for 50 years, but yup!
I had this gorgeous song on a 45 and played it daily on my high-end stereo.
My kid sister snatched it, snatched it I say! She took it to a sleepover at one of her little giggly friend's houses and honestly thought I'd never know. I took it out of the now ripped paper sleeve and found Cheetoh dust in the grooves. It must have played on repeat all night on a cheap, portable Partridge Family record player with a worn out needle. That beautiful harmony, from beginning to end, did nothing but hiss and pop and skip and crackle.
In the end, I made her give me a day of her lunch money to buy another copy and I didn't talk to her for a week.
Now, 50 years have passed, and I got agitated stomach acid. We love 600 miles apart, so I'll have to call her later.
No, not later. So what if it's five in the morning. I don't care if I wake her. Hah!
    Thanks, guys. ✌️and ❤

This record was No1 in the UK exactly 50 years ago this week. It reached No2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Three Degrees were only the 2nd girl group to have a UK No1 hit almost exactly 10 years after The Supremes who were the first with Baby Love in 1964.
The Three Degrees were far more popular in the UK, Europe and Japan than back home in the USA. The girls vocals feature on the massive hit that was the theme for the Soul Train TV show- T.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelphia) by M.F.S.B. which was a US No1 single in 1974 and is regarded as one of the very first disco records.
At the time this record hit it was summer and the whole vibe chimed with that holiday romance experience so many have while on holiday. It's a true classic.
They had a run of big UK hits including a number of albums/singles written and produced by Donna Summers producer Giorgio Moroder.
They were also famous for being a young Prince Charles favourite group and performed for him many times.
All 3 girls shared lead vocal duties and were known for their exquisite 3 part harmonies. The group was originally formed in the mid 60s and had a few minor hits but finally got their big break when they signed with Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Records in 1973.
The girls also appeared in the movie The French Connection and US TV show Sanford & Son.

The Three Degrees should have been much bigger than they were in the US, a truly sad reflection on civil rights in the Seventies. Like many black American artists of the time they enjoyed much wider success in Europe, where they were HUGE. ✌️

      @mic1240 4 месяца назад +7

@@andymageen5308not questioning race issues in the seventies existed , but loads of Black artists had massive success in the 70s, including all female groups (like the Emotions). Female singers like Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Roberta Flack, Deniece Williams and others had hits throughout the 70s on pop and R&B charts. Donna Summer dominated disco and so many other examples, and those are just female artists. Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Commodores, and countless others. The 70s had wide variety of music, which very much included very popular Black artists.

@@shyman99 WTF are you rambling on about? Are really such a dumb ass? I made the point that the Three Degrees had more success abroad than at home in the USA. what does that have to do with discrimination? It's about popularity, selling records and connecting with the public.
The vast majority of artists are usually far more successful and popular in their home nation for very obvious reasons- the cultural connection and of course being available to perform on TV and in person on stage.
FFS stop talking absolute nonsense and go sit the corner.

Another beautiful song that warms my heart and brings me back 50 years. If it wasn't for music like this to make me dream of my younger days, I would just be old. Thankfully God blessed artists like this to create music that not only reaches the ears but reaches the soul.

Back in the early 1970s, i saw The Three Degrees when they performed at the Wisconsin (?) State Fair. They were the opening act for singer, John Davidson and this was my favorite song of theirs. Thanks for bringing back memories.

The Three Degrees were on an episode of Sanford & Son back in the day. They invited Fred to their show and were last on the bill. When the opening act, a lame comedian, was performing Fred and his pals would get up and chant, "We want the 3 Degrees! We want the 3 Degrees!" Great episode and great song.

As you always say Amber, the 70's was the best greatest era of ALL music. Nothing compares to it. That's not considering the classical era's of music. In the 'pop' music category nothing beats the 70's! ❤

Dude this song takes me SOOO back to my childhood every time I hear it. Never fails. I was about 10 years old when this came out, and it remained super popular for the rest of the 70s, to the point where, later on, I couldn't remember when it had actually been released. It seemed pre-Disco and yet didn't. It was totally 70s pop-soul and yet it almost had *something* 60s pop-soul about it in spots. And those ethereal, amazing vocals. It's gotta be one of the best pop songs ever made. The 70s weren't all bad. ;-)
