I sat in the parking lot of the hospital at 2 am the night before my husband passed away and cried my heart out over this song. I knew I was going to lose him and there was no way I could stop it. Thank you guys, the comfort you gave me that night was immeasurable.
😔 😟 .. I'm so soo sorry. Music is very healing. It can also pull up the pain like nothing else can 💔 I hope you're doing better. I know losing your husband isn't something you can "get better" from ... I just hope you and your heart are doing OK. ♥️
I have to agree. The 70's here in Hawai'i gave us some of THE Best Unheard "Nationally" Love songs. Made in Hawaiian and English. Those of us who grew up had the opportunity to listen to music from Hawai'i . Mainland, Japan, Philippines, Korea, China. Though On the Radio only heard the Japanese station, Along with the AM stations. Amazing time growing up.
Jay & Amber, I predicted this would be your favorite of theirs, lets see if time bears that out! You'll love Lionel's "Truly" and "Endless Love" (with Diana Ross) !!!!!
1 of my favorite commodore songs The story behind this song He wrote it about his grandmother It was something that his grandfather said to him He says she was a great mother great wife and a phenomenal woman
My parents passed away a decade ago, but I have wonderful memories of watching them slow dance to this song, and Easy (another great Commodores song). ❣️❤️
Class of 1978 grad here--this was THE slow-jam (along with Heatwave's "Always & Forever")...that at school dances you reserved just for your girlfriend....or a girl you were TRYING to make your girlfriend! (that part @ 6:27 is when you would just close your eyes...hold her tighter...and just get high on the smell of her hair, her perfume....and just her SOUL!) Also...kudos for choosing the longer/album version instead of the shorter "chopped" radio version.
So long you did the longer version of this song. The shorter version you hear on the radio simply steals away so much richness of this song (and a whole verse too!).
This is my absolute No. 1 favorite Lionel Richie/ Commodores song. For me personally, this song is all about my beloved late Mom because she truly was a lady in every sense of the word. She passed away 10 years ago. I’ve cherished this song from the very first time I ever heard it. It’s simply beautiful. 🌹 ❤
Beautiful song from the Commodores, with the great vocals of Lionel Richie. 'Sail on' and Nightshift dedicated to Marvin Gaye' are a couple of others worth a reaction-Colin Ward
This is a great example of how the author knows exactly HOW to use his voice in the song. The music is filled with great hooks, the piano chords are perfect and Lionel’s voice and phrasing are perfect.
I will never forget the night I worked a murder mystery dinner show at one of the nice restaurants in West L.A. and Lionel Richie and his family were in the audience. I was playing the husband of a woman who gets killed halfway through the show. The detective stood me up and started to question me about her. I got more emotional than usual about the questions. I apologized and improvised the line that she was Once, Twice, Three times a Lady (I actually sang the last part. Lionel Richie actually started banging on the table and laughing like crazy. After the show I walked up to him and asked him if I owed him any residuals for using his song. He waved me off and said that was great.
The song was inspired by a toast that Lionel’s father gave to his grandmother during a party. Lionel wrote the song and dedicated it to his then wife, Brenda.
@@angelomaurizio1668 It was a toast that Lionel's father gave to Lionel's mother at one of their wedding anniversaries. Lionel's father said, ""She's a great lady, she's a great mother, and she's a great friend." This inspired Lionel to write "Three Times a Lady" which he dedicated his then wife.
The 70's were awesome. I was a teenager than and loved this so very much. Actually 50's, 60's and 70's were the best. No autotune just pure raw talent. Love your reactions!
I love The Commodores! Lionel Ritchie is a graduate of Tuskegee Institute which is now Tuskegee University! (The Tuskegee Airmen!) He is an Alabama native like me! We are so proud of him! ❤️😎
Jay, if you didn't give your beautiful lady Amber a huge hug after you wrapped this taping, you should do so now. That was actually my all-time favorite Commodore's song, precisely because of the reasons you outlined.
Lionel was pure gold through the 80s, everything he touched turned to gold #1s, singing, writing, or producing. He was/is one of my all time favorites.
When he says “now that we’ve come to the end of our rainbow” other alternatives to them breaking up: they have grown old and have had a full and meaningful life or, at the end of a rainbow being a metaphor for a journey towards a goal and they have found their pot of gold (a beautiful and meaningful relationship and a successful life together).
The best love song ever,my wife died over 30 years ago but I still tear up every time I hear this so thanks for finally reacting to it,brings back lots of good memories as well as sad ones.
They say you find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. So maybe they’ve been through a lot and found their pot of gold. That’s the way I always interpreted the rainbow. He says in one line there’s nothing to keep us apart.
I was in 7th grade, the new kid on an Army post in far off Germany, I asked the most beautiful girl I had ever seen to dance with me. I was so shy but I asked anyway. My little heart fell in love with Katie Longey as we slow danced to this song. I will always remember that night and this song and Katie.
This song went to #1 in 1978 and took Lionel Richie's career to another level. This was the first all-time classic love song written by Lionel Richie which would be followed by many more.
This was much longer than any version I've ever heard of this and it's beautiful. ❤ The drummer was the guy who sang lead on Brick House, Walter Orange.
The commodores made us teenagers at that time much easier for us to get the girl. lol. The 80s were such fun being an older teenager we had the best time. Keep up the great job. Much love to you and yours. God bless you all.
THE EMOTIONS - " FLOWERS " (Love Is A Flower) 1970s R&B Soul from the Ladies that brought you Best Of My Love , Comes another WOW! and Amazingly beautiful song with Voices that can reach your Soul. That Bassline is Fantastic too
OH my TEARS! This was my late wife's favorite song when it came out, shortly after we met. Then in 1979, we saw the BeeGees live when they came to Ft Worth. What a time to be alive!!!!!!!!
Love you both Amber and Jay, we absolutely adore you. You have touched all our hearts with your sincerity and passion for music. You are part of all our families. Keep up the good work ❤❤
He's saying they have spent a lifetime together and now that they are old and coming to the end of their 'rainbow', nothing can keep them apart. The ultimate love song for couples who have been together a long time and are still in love with one another.
Appreciate another R&B song without having to wait a whole week. As you already know you can’t go wrong with the Commodores. On the Mount Rushmore of R&B Groups. Thanks that was a classic.
I dedicated this to my mom and grandmother I know it's a love song, but I looked at it like Mom and grandmother were there for me most of my life, "the end of the rainbow" is like saying goodbye to them, until we meet again ♥️🙏✝️
I'm always reminded of the legendary performance on SNL by Eddie Murphy, in character as the Li'l Rascals 'Buh-tweet' (Buckwheat), on a fake record commercial, singing his rendition of this song: "Unce, tice, fee tines a mady!" 😎
Three Times a Lady was the song my husband and I danced to 46 years ago at our wedding in 1978! It doesn't mean they're breaking up, rather they're reflecting on the wonderful years they've shared culminating in reaching their golden years. I know because I feel like we've reached the pot of gold at the end of our rainbow.
This song takes me back to a special young lady that I never had the courage to engage with. Call it puppy love but this song always brings me back home.
This song was THE favorite bride/groom first dance song at so many wedding receptions in the late '70s and throughout the '80s. (I bet a lot of older viewers will confirm this, as well as younger viewers who watched the videos from their parents' wedding receptions.) Prom dances too!
Thank you for sharing this song. This was THE slow dance song when I was 16 and the man I danced with recently passed. He was a beautiful man and we had some good memories. RIP Robert

This is the proof the1970s have the BEST love songs of any decade released IN 1978,
You're right; you're right! : )
I remember my Mom bought the 8-track and she would play it in the car.
1978 was the peak year for pop music.
but the 80s had Er@tic City.

The first of eight straight years a hit written by Lionel Richie reached #1 on the pop chart. “ Still” was the other Commodores #1 pop hit.
Hoping they listen to Still next.
@@hollyluyah Ditto!
"Still" is one of the best all-time slow jams. The album it comes from, "Midnight Magic" is an incredible album. One of my absolute favorites.
Jay & Amber, I predicted this would be your favorite of theirs, lets see if time bears that out!
You'll love Lionel's "Truly" and "Endless Love" (with Diana Ross) !!!!!
“Endless Love” needs to be the next reaction from Lionel Richie.
1 of my favorite commodore songs The story behind this song He wrote it about his grandmother It was something that his grandfather said to him He says she was a great mother great wife and a phenomenal woman
According to Richie, it's about his Mom (and his own wife), after his Dad made a speech praising her at their 37th wedding anniversary.
My parents passed away a decade ago, but I have wonderful memories of watching them slow dance to this song, and Easy (another great Commodores song). ❣️❤️
My dad used to sing this to my mum. Amazing song isn’t it.

Another absolutely beautiful song that the Commodores sang is “Still’. The Ultimate Romantic Ballad ❤
“Still” is a beautiful yet heartbreaking song. Give it a listen…

@@milesjergens9088 Thank you, Miles.
I remember when this song came out. Lovely
My mom passed 3 years ago and I agree so much with you about this song..
We love our mums don’t we. I feel your pain x
One of the most beautiful love songs ever written, in my opinion. It gets me every time. ❤
A song like this... it would have been great to had seen the both of them dance together!!! Half a million "likes" for sure!
Beautiful song from the Commodores, with the great vocals of Lionel Richie. 'Sail on' and Nightshift dedicated to Marvin Gaye' are a couple of others worth a reaction-Colin Ward
60's and 70's were filled with the greatest love songs. Lyrically and musically
1978 rigt here .
Definitely agree with you! So much wonderful music during those times. God bless you.
I agree
This is a great example of how the author knows exactly HOW to use his voice in the song. The music is filled with great hooks, the piano chords are perfect and Lionel’s voice and phrasing are perfect.
Great song that got plenty of air play. Everybody loved it.
I’m crying and don’t know why but this song moves me this way😢
The Commodores ballads are always top notch! Don't think you've done "Oh No" yet. Their last with Lionel in the band.
Just imagine this song coming out when you're going to your JR high or high school dance, or prom. You'll remember that dance forever.

This song just casts a spell. It's perfectly smooth!
The song was inspired by a toast that Lionel’s father gave to his grandmother during a party. Lionel wrote the song and dedicated it to his then wife, Brenda.
Id thought it was inspired during a conversation his father had with his mother when he'd once told her she was 'once, twice, three times a lady'.🤷♂

"Lady" (sung by Kenny Rogers)
"Three Times A Lady"
Arguably one of the best love songs ever written!
One of the simplest songs ever with a presentation that surpasses most others. Ritchie is an icon!
The Summer of '78... one of my favorite songs, ever. Thank you for a great reaction!
They performed this live on The Midnight Special.

I haven't heard this for a few years, but still could sing every word and every note.
Same ❤😊
Yes, "Endless Love" with Lionel and Diana Ross is a must ❤
As a songwriter myself, I keep a shortlist of songs so great I wish I had written them. This is one of those songs, just perfect in every way.
Lionel’s finest vocal and great that you’re reacting to the album version and not the edited down single version, wonderful ❤
