Do you agree is the Hornet an 80's Icon? If you disgaree which Tamiya kit would you pick? Would love to hear your stories and how you got into RC back in the old days! #Roadto20kSubs! 😎👍
A Hornet was my 1st car back in 85. 3 or 4 of my mates had them, and we loved them. We ran them on tarmac cul de sacs and waste ground. The tyres got toasted in no time and they rolled easily on tar...Years later I restored my original Hornet, with correct tyres etc and took it to a beach. What a revelation. The tyres and suspension work perfectly on compact sand. It truly is a beach buggy.
This was my first RC back in the 80’s when I was a kid. I thought it was great at the time. A few years later I got an Avante 2001 which I thought looked wicked. So much so I hardly used it, so as not to damage it. I still have it boxed in my garage some 30 ish years later.
Most definitely an icon for me. The first RC i had back in the day. Closely followed by the Monster Beetle and Clodbuster. Both also Icons of the era. I have a non box are Hornet but need another to do box art for the shelf
Great seeing you covering other brands such as Tamiya. I love there builds. Got myself the egress black and I have to say it's a beauty. Also drives well. As an entry level modern Tamiya, i recommend the dt03 racing fighter. I put a brushless motor in, changed a few things and honestly its the most fun car I have. Even more then 500 dollar + cars
We used to race these Icons back in the '80s, my friend and his Dad were really into it, my friend had a Grasshopper with a Hornet 540 motor and his Dad had a Mardave Apache,
My first RC I had as a kid was the Tyco Turbo Hopper. The Hornet would have burned circles around that thing. Slow as hell and struggled with even a slight incline. A few years later graduated to a Kyosho Turbo Ultima. Finally some power and speed!
Yep was certainly a icon of the era. Used to pit my frog up against them in speed runs. With the upgraded motor, hornets were quick, just don't crash into anything...
What I'd have done for a hornet back in the day. I had a turbo panther and loved it but they were no hornet. Like you say its about the fun. I bought my self a second hand turbo panther recently for me and the kids and it turned up unused ! I can't even describe the nostalgia opening the box
I love Tamiya kits. I've had a King Cab, and a Manta Ray, which I still have, and my son has a Blitzer Beetle. The building experience is always great, and it was wonderful introducing my son to the hobby. 👍🏻
I had a Hornet in 1985, my 1st RC. My wife bought me a new one for my 51st birthday last year (37 years after my first one). Great little car and fun to build. I noticed the Boomerang is available on pre order if you fancy another. Great videos, all the best.
Mate... great wifey. Just getting back into it as the kids grow up, and all I get is ' How much are you spending? '. I can by these at target for $25... 🤦
I had 2 of these as a kid and threw them out when I moved 10 years ago. Now I find myself looking to buy another! I am looking at the Traxxs Sledge or XRT as well. Nice video.
One of the best things about the motor on axle pod design of Hopper/Hornet/Lunchbox etc is all the moving parts except for the wheels are hidden away, this means they are both low maintenance, and there are no nasty drive shafts and cups exposed which can hurt little fingers - for younger kids they are the best thing the parents could get them. Virtually no maintenance needed on the moving parts(once you replace the patented Tamiya Butter pinion gear) the Lunchbox is probably the best thing you can buy for a 6-10 year old......I still love driving the sucker, and I'm 44 years old this year, have raced 1/8 nitro, 1/10 electric, and own a Losi DBXL-E 2.0 1/5 scale. Lunchbox Rocks!
This is the RC car I had as a kid that got me wanting to get into RC again nowadays. I got a hornet for Christmas I think 85 maybe? I remember getting hop ups. Got a motor called "green diamond" and by the end of its day, it had went from the buggy, to a monster truck, with a Nissan body on it like the big 80's 4x4 my dad had. It had at one time foams and a 63 Vette body on it, and a monte xarlo ss Nascar body painted like Dale Earnhardt's blue and yellow wrangler #3 car. God so many memories with this thing. My dad assembled it on Christmas Eve. I remember waking up to a big crash sound. Dad got it together and knocked over the tree lmao. I'd snuck down the hall to catch him "I'd figured out about Santa by then" putting the tree back up. He never knew I saw. Loo
I got the GRASSHOPPER II back then which was upgraded with a 540RS Motor. Had sooo much fun with it. Still have it stored- I did some bodywork like self made flame stickers, an exhaust I stole from a toy car and some early 90s wrestler names, quite cheesy but hey, I was a kid ☺
Just sounds as I remember with the rear wheels bumping up because of the poor suspension. Loved my Hornet back in the day, totally got modded up with over powered parts, suspension, wheels, bumper and body styles. Poor handling but such great fun also, have some great memories of those days.
So good, my first proper rc!! Just made an original shelf queen like I used to have back in the 80's with a mechanical speed control and acoms radio gear.....why not build a thunder shot next, bit more up to date and handles so much better!
I was lucky when i was a kid back in the 80's i had the grasshopper,a hornet and a manta ray i use to think they was great back then . I now own a ftx zorro, ftx comet, ftx ravine,a acme raptor brushless witch was a kit i built
Built a neo scorcher a year ago and have 5 tamiya in total and love em, every time I go to sell them I don't, they are iconic design and great fun. Thanks for your upload 👍🙏🐈 mad bull ? Sand scorcher?
I started with a frog racer, I think I was about 8 at the time… the paint job I done on it was atrocious lol.. they do a lot of Xsa versions of these now and that should help keep old Tamiya models going for newcomers who don’t fancy starting out by building a full kit by themselves
I had one in 1985 and it's a great car for the beach, park etc. It's not much of a racer though. I had Wild Willy first then The Hornet and it was an easier car to build and I paid $135 kit only from a local hobby shop Spring 1985. IMO, The Frog is more iconic and a better car.
Sand scorcher or Rough Rider, but at $550 is hard to justify purchasing one of those kits vs modern day Arrma basher. $550 seems like a steep price to pay for nostalgia. My first RC was a sand scorcher more almost 40 years ago, but I find it hard to stomach at that price.
For really crap comedy handling but oodles of laffs it has to be the Lunchbox. You know you want one! I'm gonna buy another and leave it mostly stock this time.Mine had a brushless 2S setup, it did cartwheels.
Almost all modern cars perform better, better chassis layouts, better suspension setups. The cheap Chinese cars perform way better than this in every way.. it’s an old dated design. Of course cars like this shaped the hobby but it’s not comparable to anything built in 2023/4
I bought my first car a new manta ray in the 90's and was surprised how outdated it was compared to every other car at the club.it went on fire after 3rd run.put me off for 30 years.tamiyas weren't worth the money back then and aren't now either

My first car was the Hornet back in 1985. I saved my money from delivering the local daily newspaper.
@@wakilorokunle9650 i did the same with a Kyosho Cosmo
Absolutely it is an icon
I’d say the Tamiya frog is more iconic
Imagine a world without tamiya.
Such an important company

Yes you definitely need another Tamiya! You need a Super Hotshot!
Was my first real RC. Will never forget it. 💖
I remember when I was about 7 years old the very first hobby grade rc car I ever had a go of was a Tamiya Super Hornet.
What I'd have done for a hornet back in the day. I had a turbo panther and loved it but they were no hornet. Like you say its about the fun. I bought my self a second hand turbo panther recently for me and the kids and it turned up unused ! I can't even describe the nostalgia opening the box

Love that Rob!
I love the Hornet-got the re release after loosing my 84 version-Greatest RC car for promoting the hobby-Thanks for the video-we appreciate it!👍

Still very iconic, we all have our own favourites, i like the superfight g.
Lunchbox has gotta b the most iconic
Love the hornet, but grasshopper v2 was my first proper rc,absolutely loved it,really want another 👍👍👍😀😀
I got a Hornet in February this year. I was wanting one for a while. I agree with you,- a superb little fun buggy

Also when I was twelve The hornet was my first hobby grade car.
That's the original one that got me in the hobby a green hornet did it for me..in them good old 80's 😎 who didnt like whip antennas lol

That’s awesome brotha what a great throwback! 🤙🤙🤙
Glad you enjoyed!
My first ever RC kit. Still have it...sort of. If you haven't got another Tamiya already, get a Frog. A lot more competent handling wise.
Seeing you drive this reminded me of when I used to have my TYCO ELIMINATOR rc.
Company is about personality and character with their cars.
So good, my first proper rc!! Just made an original shelf queen like I used to have back in the 80's with a mechanical speed control and acoms radio gear.....why not build a thunder shot next, bit more up to date and handles so much better!

Cool! Rc car history! Very cool content
I have a GT tuned in my hornet and a dirt tuned in my grasshopper which is the perfect motor for that car.
I remember the Grasshopper as a kid and wanted it so bad. Unfortunately Santa couldn’t get it😢

Boomerang or the hotshot. Be great too have a look back on them.
Nice classic, but not anymore more for our times... Great video 😉
cool rc and great run,i like mine,it really is a great rc
Would be fun to build a TT02 and then do an upgrade series. Love Tamiya!
not a bad idea at all!
I still have mine from when i was a kid. Beaten up as only an 11 year old can manage.
good video mate

I love the old tamiyas , still have quite a few originals in the loft , why don't you build a lunchbox and challenge bigbeards speed run .
not a bad idea at all
Lunch box! ;)

Its not the same with ESC! You need a servo on an arm and 3 power levels. do it properly. Also all tied up in a balloon for water proofing :D
First one I built in 1985.
Fun car, loads of character, bad handling, max fun
Do it! Try a DT-02
tempting!!
Built this last year and have a lunchbox
For really crap comedy handling but oodles of laffs it has to be the Lunchbox. You know you want one! I'm gonna buy another and leave it mostly stock this time.Mine had a brushless 2S setup, it did cartwheels.
ah damn i think i will have to get a lunch box!!
@@beyondRC everyone must have at least one.
Grasshopper.
lunch box brushless ,the gears can take it😀
Did people actually race these things in competition 😳?
hi, defo get another tamiya maybe the hilux? bit expensive but cool as. just bought an infaction v2, how cool if i could have built it
Icon? Yes. But not as much as the hotshot.
Equally I could say The lunchbox.
Sorry, but where is the antenna?
It’s running a 2 in 1 esc and receiver which is 2.4ghz and has a tiny antenna. No 27mhz here 🥹
Thank you very much for helping me out on this. All the best!@@beyondRC
What modern cars are you talking about at this price point that performs better?
Almost all modern cars perform better, better chassis layouts, better suspension setups. The cheap Chinese cars perform way better than this in every way.. it’s an old dated design. Of course cars like this shaped the hobby but it’s not comparable to anything built in 2023/4
Check out The Frog.
I have always thought the Grasshopper and Hornet were overrated....
I bought my first car a new manta ray in the 90's and was surprised how outdated it was compared to every other car at the club.it went on fire after 3rd run.put me off for 30 years.tamiyas weren't worth the money back then and aren't now either
Just finished building mine looks so cool check my driver out has a special feature
