  • These two iconic Tamiya cars battled the backyards and back streets of the 1980's. Lets make some laps and see how they hold up!
Tried something a bit different than the normal shootout video we do.
Probably won't do the long winded type stuff again..lol. Hope you all enjoy.
Thanks to Pizza Justice for the tune!

I got a Frog for Christmas in either in 85 or 86. It was the best Christmas ever. My dad built it while I watched. All these years later, looking at photos of the Frog and especially the box causes a formidable psychological response. Those Tamiya boxes were so cool. Best graphics ever. I still have my Frog packed away in my garage. I'm considering restoring it after seeing this. Remember the Wild Willy? I'd like to get one! Thanks for this video.

Some of the best responses I have had are just this. I absolutely love that it has brought back so many great memories for people. The sights and sounds are second to none in my opinion. Plenty of Frog spare parts are available if you need anything to get your old one up and running again. Merry Christmas friend.

I had the grashopper, my brother the hornet....we both absolutly loved these cars and although in the beginning our friends all had better cars like the fox, boomerang etc.....we loved them and before getting the more "professional" stuff I am greatful to have started with these cars...they learned you how to drive!! If you can drive a tuned up Grashopper with a 21 Turns motor you sure as hell can drive a well suspentioned car. Nothing beats the nostalgic of the old Tamiya cars!

Had both a Frog and a Hornet back in the mid-late 80's. I can't remember ever NOT breaking the frog. every time I took it out, something broke. I also never remember breaking the Hornet, it just always worked. I graduated onto the Associated RC-10 and never had money again.........

I still remember working at a hobby shop and selling tons of Frogs & Hornets...then one day a Rep came in with an RC-10. Our Jaws dropped. He ran it for 10 min just in front of the store. My Falcon seemed pretty lame at that moment....The owners chose not to carry the RC-10, so we had to (in secret) get ourselves a few. Then we had to hide them in bags or under towels until the owner stepped out. Then we'd run them all around the shop! LOL! In the coming months, we still sold many Tamiyas to little kids & their parents, but had to be honest to the more advanced racers. We told them that a Fox is never going to run with an Ultima or RC-10. It was a "changing" of the guard...I miss those days!

Same! I had begged for the Hornet for years from my parents. “Combine as Christmas / Birthday / Christmas” I said. I had toy magazine clippings all over my bedroom wall of the cars. The Hot shot and Frog were well out of reach so took the Hornet as a conservative request. Never got it under the tree. Had to settle for the RC Sand Bully by Necca I think. In adulthood I now have the Dark Impact, Frog and still an unbuilt Hornet 🐝 in the attic 😁😎. I see what my kids get now a days with a simple request with Apple devices. They don’t seem to have the same connection with tangible items and the curiosity of how something goes together like I did in the 80’s.

I’m a 45 yo dad now and I still revere The Tamiya Grasshopper as the most enjoyable thing I have ever bought, even to this day.
The artwork on the Tamiya box was so enticing. I remember going to the store with my parents to get all the boxes needed. I would just sit and enjoy the sight of it all in my room when I got home.
And then the whole experience of building it. Getting to know every nut and bolt - knowing I could always take the whole thing apart and put it back together, should a problem arise. I learnt so much about mechanics and electronics from this set. (It probably drove me to become an engineer). To experience a seemingly box of dead parts come alive, was the most rewarding feeling I could imagine.
I think I need to buy a new Tamiya set. I always wanted The Hornet, but it was sold out back then.
And this time I will get a R/C servo set with fail safe so I don’t have to chase my runaway car when the throttle servo battery dies 😂

      @VINTAGEBACKYARDRC  2 года назад

Great story! I as well was sucked in by that beautiful box art! One tip I can give you is to invest in a modern 2.4 gig. radio. No more glitches or runaways. No need for a failsafe. The modern esc will also just cut the power to the motor (the cars now use an electronic speed controller and the receiver runs off the main car battery...no more AA batteries)! Hope you get one...it's still an amazing hobby.

@@VINTAGEBACKYARDRC Thank you for this tip, I didn’t know all this - it is much appreciated! It’s good to hear that the technology has improved. Not having to deal with AAs for the receiver is a big plus!

Excellent video. The Grasshopper was my first car. Parents made me put it on layaway. They put $20 down to start the plan and I had to pay the rest. Took me about 8 months to make enough money cutting grass etc. to pay for it. I'll never forget the price. With tax it was $68.37. I still have that car. I finally restored it using NOS parts about 10 years ago. I've run it a couple of times when the grass in the back yard is cut short but it mostly lives on my shelf these days.
It's interesting to see the lack of movement in the rear suspension on the Hornet. I knew it was stiff but it hardly moves at all on that track.

I used to have a Hornet and my neighbour had the monster beetle. We used to trash those cars, driving them on the street jumping them off the same jumps we'd set up for our BMXs. That cheap plastic bodyshell was virtually unrecognisable after a few rolls. Eventually I wound up buying a harder plastic bodyshell off of one of the other cars in the range. I want to say it was the shell off the Grasshopper 2 but it's been a few decades and my memory is hazy. I definitely got my money's worth out of that old car even if it was the 'cheap' one.

Ha love that unique vintage chirping sound of the grasshopper and hornet because the back wheels spent more time off the ground then on it due to a completely nonfunctional rear suspension.
nostalgia for the win. In '87 I was 17 and bypassed all three of these and my first was the Falcon. With falcons and foxes at the local track, these three were instantly not competetive any more. Then the RC10's showed up...
    Cheers!

The Frog is a better car for handling around a race track BUT if it were a real race between the two, The Hornet would have won for being out on the track for longer than The Frog was. Fastest around the track is not always better. Something that can be reliable and stay out on track for longer will usually be the winner. Either way, they're both great classics and you can't go wrong with either one. Great video and great camera work by the little one!

Great video, man! I remember wanting a Frog as a kid, in 1985 I was 10 years old but I never got one. In 1987 (I think) I got my hands on a used Tamiya (Ta-my-ya) Midnight Punkin truck, that was my first "hobby grade" RC, I loved working on and driving it! I remember my mom buying me a Quarterflash Quickshot "stock motor", probably in 1988. I put that motor in and it sounded like something was slipping, the wheels were spinning inside of the tires. LOL! My brother who is 11 years older had a 1973 Plymouth Barracuda streetcar and he had screws going through the back wheels into the bead of the tire so I did the same thing, got some tiny little self tapping screws and screwed them through the bead of the wheel into the tires and when I did THAT THING WAS FAST! I tore the back bumper off doing wheelies! LOL! Anyways, to this day I'm a huge RC enthusiast, I have six of them! Your video sure brought back some memories, thanks for sharing! Maybe you could find a Midnight Punkin and a Lunch Box and do a video on those. Thanks for sharing!
