That takes me back 30 years, one night while working 3rd shift in the late 80's, heard that sound in the warehouse area, went to check it out and a co-worker was running a frog in the open warehouse, he let me drive it and over 30 years later , i'm still a rc junky, over ttime, i have raced about every class there was, but now i'm just a collector (Team Associated mostly), but i still will never forget that night that i ran that frog, i was hooked..........
As a ten year old, the Frog and the Fox were my dream cars. We didn't have the money for either at the time, but I'd always pop into the model shop at the mall anytime I had the chance and gaze longingly at the boxes up on the shelf. I guess neither are particularly "attractive" cars by modern standards, but they are both very much icons of the era and are special in that sense. Still hope to own both one day!
Marietta Corsini I was exactly the same. I used to make a 1.5hr bus trip to a place that sold the Tamiya cars and also had the video on loop of all the cars at the time. The frog was my first Tamiya but the gearbox was a bit weak. I used to stare at pictures of the lunchbox while in secondary school. I never get bored of the models as they hold a place firmly in my heart, as many other 40+ year old people I have spoken to. 👍👍
I was the same way . My local radio shack sold Tamiya . I got a guide book and dreamed of owning a frog or a black foot . I am 43 now and still dont have them . I own traxxas slash and rustler. I am going get one of the two. Frog or blackfoot soon. Just not sure what one .
That's running great! Old man story to follow: 🤣 Back in 83-84 in school a few of us took our cars to run on the basket ball courts. We all had different cars but all we running stock 540's. Only one guy (with rich parents lol) had a Frog, it flew! We couldn't even get close to it. 💪👍
I wish there was a love button brother, your videos deserve more than a like. Please NEVER apologise for anything u do. Your the most straight up RUclips'er. I had my Frog in the snow when I was 14 (48 now) I've got a June 7 day camping in the snow holiday (I'm Aussie) planned & the Frog is just 1 of the re-released Tamiya buggies that will b coming.
Matt Hutch Oh wow that’s awesome Matt 😎 I love it when you have a predetermined impression of a car, then when you actually run it it’s completely the opposite of what you thought 😊😊😊 Happy RC’ing indeed my friend 😊👊🏻
Takes me back to my 35 years when I was circa 12yo. The Hot Shot was my absolute dream. The Frog was next in line but still out of reach so I thought I would settle for The Hornet as a request from my parents for both Birthday and Christmas. We didn't seem have the money despite being sent to a prestigious private school. Instead had to settle for the Nikko Sand Bully from Kmart and never got the Hornet even though I had toy catalog clippings stuck all over the wall next to my bed. Mid 2000's and my wife bought me a Dark Impact to finally quell the desire. Great car but alas I needed the real deal. I now have a Hornet still in it's box unbuilt but went with the Frog as a build project. Built this 12 months ago and it has not disappointed. Amazing technology and performance for its day! Even by todays standards. My kids don't seem to get it and prefer the virtual stuff on iPads. This was spawned from a great inventive era. Rc Cars, Nintendo game and watches, Pacman, new ideas in cinema e.g. Back to the Future, ET, Star Wars, New concepts in kids shows Transformers, Masters of Universe...........and great distinguishable music to boot. I was lucky to grow up in such a great booming era. This video is what it's all about!
Yep, I grew up in the same era, 48 now. Its nice that we are fond of our childhood/teenage years. Those were magical times and today's kids will never understand the level of thrill we got from these things, which will probably appear primitive and maybe even boring to them. Buying, building, driving and tweaking an RC model teaches you waaaayyy more than playing on an iPad. Apart from the fact that when you go driving it, you are actually going out and moving. I recently built a Racing Fighter, with 3300kv brushless motor. Absolutely love it to bits. Cheers all !!
The hotshot was THE vehicle to race.....a buddy and I were at a big hobby show at the convention center and got it into our heads to buy a pair......they had races going on outside in the dirt and while the other vehicles were flipping and rolling over the hotshot low ground clearance allowed it to dominate......we couldn't afford it so he bought a ________ (can't remember) and I bought a rough rider....it was a piece of crap actually. Rigid body was used to strengthen the flexible FRP deck and the first good jump, cracked the body at the roll bar and it never was right again......
so much fun it is to see the vintage cars go it really brings back the glory days of my youth, I started with the falcon and ran the wheels off it, my new re-re frog is in the box waiting for me to also relive the past. thanks for bringing us in on your tamiya adventures.
Very cool ! The Frog was the first Tamiya I’d ever had a drive of , I think it was 1985 .. from memory the gearbox started crunching in it , a few years later I moved to Sydney and started working for Hobbyco selling Tamiya RC cars and parts 😎👍 Fast forward a few years I’m now 50 and still loving Tamiya RC and your channel ! Hope to own a Porsche 959 one day.
Fastest kit Tamiya came out with. Brings back so many memories. I can remember smoking my friend who had a Kyosho Optima with a Kyosho Gold motor whilst I ran a 17T Trinity Joel Johnson edition motor.. SMOKED! Thanks for the awesome video as always!
That's the 1980s right there, weird but unforgettable lol I took the motor apart came with my Frog, took a few windings off the motor and re-soldered it, OMG it flew round the carpark for 1 lap until the endcap melted into an unrecognisable blob of plastic haha. Its always nice seeing a running video even if its a few laps around the carpark.
Glenn stop saying you don’t like the looks of the frog especially in favour of the Falcon can’t help thinking you may need some professional help the frog is a classic and beautifully engineered
Great video!👍 I love how the Frog looks. It looks kinda 'mean'. My brother had one exactly how yours looks but his had an aerial either side of the cab, i think. Were they just for show? I forget!🤔. Anyhoo, those were the days, a group of us with my Grasshopper, my brothers Frog and a couple of our mates with Hornets. Happy days indeed!😄👍👍
I have a re-re Frog. It's got the tble esc and the steering servo is middle mounted with a Kimborough mid servo saver on it and aftermarket steering rods/turnbuckle things on it. It's a pearler, goes really well. Great cars these for what they are.
That runs great and the steering looked responsive I love it, My first RC was a Hornet (1984) here in Australia everyone used to say is that a frog car ? I would say No its a Hornet LOL. Nice One Glenn RIBBIT
Wow!! I was waiting for this video!! I really enjoyed that!!! Takes me waaay back!! My friend had that one and it was awesome! Hi Glenn, great vid again its always great to see these classic buggies running and the Frog was a top class buggy on the track back in the day! It always did have sharp steering and good speed and was only really toppled when the Fox came out...well of course the RC10 was about and much better but we never really had them at our club! We had mostly tamiya cars! Great stuff mate!😉👍

Wade Beaumont Spot on Wade 👊🏻 This run changed my mind on it, it was a blast to drive and I thought it handled great for what it is 😊 Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
The Frog was the rc car almost everyone wanted down here in OZ. The three Tamiya's I saw the most were The Grasshopper, The Hornet and The Frog(in that order, from cheapest to most expensive). If someone had a Frog, you considered them rich.. lol. In my case, if a friend had a Tamiya, I saw them as "rich".. lol. Those three Tamiya's were the most popular in Australia and the only ones I ever saw beyond the Metro(Taiyo) Jet Hopper(the rc car that I had). Tamiya, the brand, was the only "kit" brand mentioned in the 1980's and 1990's. In fact, I didn't know there were other rc kit manufacturers until after buying my first Tamiya earlier this year(a 2004 Hornet kit at age 47! 🤣). Now my sister is in on it as well!
Very nice restore project, and nicely done! I own an original Subaru Brat from the same era, mid 80’s. It’s been in a storage for decades but is in good shape. I’m now looking to restore and update. Can you recommend an ESC that plays well with the stock-ish motor and 2s lipo you mention here?
The Frog has always been one of my least favourite Tamiya's to look at but after seeing that go im starting to warm too it. Looks proper old school rc fun for beginners and that's what these cars are all about for me and that frog ticks all the boxes, well apart from the looks box hahaha!
Never had turning problems with the falcon. But I ran the Wild One tires. They have better grip than the original ones. But the frog runs realy great too. Was surprised how fast it was, and how it drove. Great cars both of them.
Great video. I built this for my daughter for her 18th birthday recently. She loves it. Racing my original Hornet with her Frog takes me back to the 80s, great fun. Getting technical though, do you think the Frog gearbox build is not the best and will not last ?
I had a rough rider with those same tie rods...they were ATROCIOUS.....extremely weak and would pop off easily, they'd strip and pull out and it was brutal to align the front wheels you'd have to pop them on and off the ball joints to adjust and by the time you got it dialed in? The socket was stretched out....
-8 and making videos, that sir is dedication. Personally I love the look of the frog but now I’ll upgrade to a sport tuned very soon. Out of interest what gear ratio did you choose? -8 that’s worth a second mention 🥶
Can echo your comments about The Falcon's poor steering. I distinctly remember mine was pants back in the day, even with my pretty poor driving skills. I put it down to the tyres; those narrow, high profile, line tread designs really didn't offer much grip and I remember they were pretty stiff. But I also think the weight distribution with the motor hanging off the back doesn't help front end grip either. That all said, The Falcon looks way, way better (sorry Froggies) and that's what counted back then ;-)
Yo! Never liked the Falcon.. just ugly piece of.. :D You know, they used to race with Frogs, they handle pretty good for their time.Great vid again, Glenn!
The frog was one of the best back in the day few original Tamiyas can beat the frog in performance it’s the monster beetle and black foot family same frame.
u can put chains on the rear tires too (tamiyabase.com/articles/53-how-to/144-snow-chains) u put the grasshopper 2 front tires for the road sand tires slide out to much jumps like a frog too great car cuz i got a vintage frog car all so :-) great video

Never had turning problems with the falcon. But I ran the Wild One tires. They have better grip than the original ones. But the frog runs realy great too. Was surprised how fast it was, and how it drove. Great cars both of them.
Goran Oieras
Excellent Goran, thanks for watching buddy 😊👊🏻
I have always liked the frog, the ORV chassis is a clssic
adrian harrison
It’s certainly is my friend, I just didn’t realise how good they run 🚗💨💨💨💨
Thanks for watching buddy 😊👊🏻
very nice my friend👍🇬🇧😊😎👊
Is that a stock frog rear end or upgraded. Thanks for the video.
Great video. I built this for my daughter for her 18th birthday recently. She loves it. Racing my original Hornet with her Frog takes me back to the 80s, great fun. Getting technical though, do you think the Frog gearbox build is not the best and will not last ?
Great vid..runs so well! .any chance of doing a fox vid at some point see how it compares?!👌

Tim Vanasen
Excellent Tim 😊
Welcome to the channel buddy 👊🏻
Frog rules the 2 wheel drive, ;)
That all said, The Falcon looks way, way better (sorry Froggies) and that's what counted back then ;-)
al1stare
Yep totally agree, the Falcon has the looks 🤩🤩🤩
Thanks for watching my friend 😊👊🏻
My first car. Not a good car but fun to build

The frog was one of the best back in the day few original Tamiyas can beat the frog in performance it’s the monster beetle and black foot family same frame.
u can put chains on the rear tires too
(tamiyabase.com/articles/53-how-to/144-snow-chains)
u put the grasshopper 2 front tires for the road sand tires slide out to much
jumps like a frog too great car cuz i got a vintage frog car all so :-) great video
Is there any one from sussex on here
Beautiful car. I hate the way the cab forward models look of buggies
You turn too much
Keep it running straight longer and it'll go faster without giving your viewers taco neck
