WOW! Thanks Glenn...What a wonderful comment! We really tried hard on this one. I can't thank you enough for all you that have done for us vintage guys. All the content...the Facebook page for us to chat and the personal help you have given me with my little spot here. It doesn't go unappreciated.
The rich kids always had these cars. I could only dream of of these cars when I was I kid. I would love to buy them both for the memories and nostalgia
Was in the same boat back then...lol. I was happy to have my Hornet, though. Good news is you can pick up both of these cars as rere kits! Think the Fox may be out of production...but they are out there.
I remember it well, I was getting a car for Xmas and these two arrived in my local store a month or two before Xmas. For me there was no comparison, it had to be the WildOne. I now have a NIB ReRe which will be built on Christmas Day this year in memory of my late father with whom I built the original.
Awesome video VBRC! The music was right on the money 👍🏻 Great to see no breakages and I was surprised how well both these buggies handled the track. Excellent job brother 👍🏻🙌🏻🤘🏻
Thanks my friend. This one was some work on the post side...but fortunately the cars were very easy to shoot. Evened things out a bit. Thanks for the view and positive comment.
Got myself a job in a sports store as a 13 years old, saved, scrounged, bought a new Fox, plus a technigold and the swaybar hopup from day one. That combo totally trumphed the neighbourhood kids rc cars of the time. Only the 959 could surpass it. No issues whatsoever. A year later sold as a complete runner, with a wee bit less tire thread, on the hunt for faster thrills.
All my friends had Tamiya models when I used to BMX race in the 1980’s (we would race them in between moto’s). I had a Falcon, friends had Hornet, Frog, Grasshopper but the Fox always seemed fastest 👌
The Fox drives very much like a more modern car over the others. The mono shock works "ok". Car is much more responsive with a front sway bar. Very fun and fast vintage kit regardless.
Love all you videos but i admit that this is now my favorite ! Montage, footage and Musical arrangement are great. From the first seconds of run we see immediately that the beautiful Wild one play in higher category than Hoppers. The Fox is my favorite Tamiya 2wd buggy: i dreamed of having one. Remember i read various french magazine reporting various results of national/regional race in this time and the Fox (with slightly improvements) was often among the best. Many thanks for sharing this !
I was so surprised with how good the Wild One drove. Both fantastic cars and on another another level from the Hopper/Hornet. Thanks for the comment and view! We are super proud of this one.
I won races with my fox against other Foxes & and even R/C10's. The wild one scores huge points in the cool factor department, but the rear suspension was / is not as plush as the Fox..in my own opinion. Either way a true Tamiya fan will want to add both to the collection. Two of the best looking and most fun to drive they ever released
The Wild One looked wilder and the Fox seemed more composed to me - that's the way it is with fast cars! I don't own either of these cars and I've always wondered about this comparison. Great video, thanks!
Well you can't a much better day out at the track than that! Two great looking cars, nor breakages and I am sure it was nothing but smiles as well. Great job!
As a fox racer it suffered from under steer and needed an anti roll bar to even get close to 4 wd optima. The smell of those tyres will never b forgotten.
Just found an original mint wild one in the garbage, someone threw it to the curb. I had to pick it up. I won't be driving it but everything works and it's great to look at on the shelf. I'll be keeping it for years to come.
I don't know how much I'd change on the Wild One. Maybe replace the bones for Frog CVDs, but that's it. Best scale buggy looks in the industry, take it out and enjoy running it.
It might not even need any hard parts tweaking. Drove amazing. Just could use some shock tweaks imo. "Maybe" a better front shock package. Thanks for the comment/view.
Great video. I was never able to convince my parents to get me one back in the day. I've been into the hobby for about a decade now, but still think about models like these that I missed out on. Might have to pick up a kit soon.
The Blockhead Wild One is just getting released now. Looks fantastic as well. Thanks for the view and comment. These old Tamiya cars always take me right back!
Hey GREAT video!!!! Either your a great driver or those buggies really do handle really well!!! Soooo looking forward to more shootouts! Hotshot vs Boomerang? Love it my friend!! Thanks
Cars were GREAT! Hotshot Vs Bigwig will happen (I don't have a Boomer). Lot's of things planned for next year and few left for this year (getting cold). Thanks so much for the nice comment and view!
I've just found your channel after looking up the tamiya frog! I'm a 90's baby so don't have much nostalgia for these but I am addicted to RC and watching your channel is draining my wallet! Amazing backyard track man, love the videos!
Overall this is such a top knotch video from the sweet camera angles, badass track, professional quality music and commentary.. your vast knowledge of the cars you are testing is mind blowing! Amazing job brother!!!!
Man...thank you so much! What a nice comment. Love doing the music as much as the video. Gets tough to juggle at times...but glad how this turned out for sure.
When I was a kid I got an aftermarket anti roll bar for the front suspension. I recall seeing the rear tire lift under deceleration because the front suspension had no rolling resistance.
The Technipower motor went well in both cars, but the Wild One needed shims in the diff too stop the bevel gears slipping under power after a bit of use.
I have a re-release Fox & a Blockhead Motors Wild One. You are so right about how great both vehicles are. Fantastic video, superb camera work. I'm surprised it wasn't a little closer as on your track the Wild One would be more at home with the tight close together corners. Mint backyard track you have too 🤟 I'm very jealous
That was great fun. Love the leaderboard. Love the presentation. I would love to see a shoot out between a Kyosho and Tamiya or any shootout with the lunchbox :D Congrats to your production crew as well. Sterling job
Thanks so much! We have lots of ideas on the list...just out of time as far as weather I fear this year. Lots of winter indoor content planned though. Thanks to the Elf we have another Kyosho car to use!
Great video! I run both cars and they can easily run more power, I have a sports tuned in the wildone and a stock 540 in the novafox and often run them both on a 3s lipo, a good tip is to weigh them both down on the nose about 20 grams and lower them about 5mm each and they run even better. Thank you for this great video. Can't wait for the next! 👍🏻
I notice that the Fox's front suspension had a little extra bounce after landing. Maybe softer springs and a heavier oil, without changing much else. I wonder how my Tamiya Buggy Champ would do on your track. Great video, sir.
I loved the video, the fox was my first Tamiya car, and the one i have driven the most in my life. Had several batteries when i was younger and just kept charging and running them. As a side note, I still have my best friends Fox from the 80s, it was hardly used compared to mine and i bought it off him in the 90s when his parents were cleaning out his cupboard 😁 Ps, i didn't think the video was too long, i could have watched another 5 mins of them going around the track easily!
Thanks bud (great comment btw). That fox has much of my buds old one in it. Really happy that it has ties to my childhood. It's a tough balance with the video length for sure. On average folks check out early over watching he entire video. I definitely don't pay much attention to the stats though. I have a few ideas for spring that will be much longer.
Heyjeh, two of the most iconic RC´s ever build in one video. Like it so much! Luckily I have them both... as a rere, but how cares? I was around 13 yrs old as they came up, but there was no way to buy them as a teenager.
Tweak oil wt and springs & they go from fun to awesome !! I race my associated B5 & 6 when I want to do some serious racing , but nothing is more fun than racing These buggies from Tamiya.
Lol this is great I was literally shooting and editing 10 lap shootout videos today I recently bought a vintage fox got it for 30$ couldn't believe it needs some work but totally worth it
I just wish the wild one gear box was more stable. It would start to crackle and click due to wearing out of the bevel gears. The amount of packing I had to do in the summer of 87 and 88 was insane to keep that gearbox stable. The motor would get so hot it would sizzle.
This one is all new and still had a tick or two. I have had luck putting shims in to tighten things up on the frog's. gearbox. Might need to try that on this one as well.
Wow ! Did not expect that! I would have said WO and Fox somewhere b/t Hornet and Frog. How about Hot Shot? 4x4 power and handling? There’s a question. My brother in law has a WO still in original condition in it box not yet built.
Hotshot video will come my friend. Not sure if it will make the winter cut off unfortunately. The two cars were leaps and bounds better over the Hornet/Frog. No need for heavy concentration while driving. Was super fun to make this one. Thanks for the view and comment.
Wow, great shoot out, great video western theme and time laps board homage to Top Gear. I just picked up a used 80’s Fox and just ordered another good condition Fox from eBay. One for a runner and the other as a parts car. Just waiting for Tower Hobbies to get the Block head Wild one back on stock. Hope you guys would do a shoot out Kyosho vs Tamiya. Maybe a Black foot vs Big brute, Hot shot vs Optima, Grasshopper vs Raider, Super Shot vs Turbo Optima, Fox vs Ultima?🤔. Anyway, great job guys!
Thanks so much! Trying to round up some Kyosho...but they are hard to find and are usually expensive. Always looking for deals. Love doing the shootout videos. The Fox is a great car! Rear arms can get a bit fragile...so for spares you might want to pick up a set.
Wish it was my original idea...A viewer suggested it early last year and we ran with it. We had been timing the cars at that point but not doing the board thing (viewers had to go back and watch the videos). I thoroughly enjoy lap comparisons myself and the Top Gear laps are absolutely my favorite part of that show. Just no Stig here...lol.
Back then I was trying to chose between the fox and the turbo Ultima, I chose the fox and the monoshock couldn't handle the big jumps with the monoshock in front and broke the chassis. Should have gotten the turbo Ultima like the men at the track told me
Definitely more toy grade over the Ultima. But for a Tamiya kit...its pretty quick compared to it's sister cars in the pack. Appreciate the back in the day story.
My first real rc car was the fox, for some stupid reason i swapped it for a beat up, bald tyred 'the frog' . I think it was because the frog and the grasshopper were the most popular rc cars around at the time and i didnt want to be the odd one out ...
Haha....Avery shirt print paper and a inkjet printer. I'll send you the file...lol. I can't even imagine the headache that would be brother. Seriously though...get those vintage cars back on the road! Too much fun.
Hmm...well. I am not sure to be honest. The rear shock pistons need smaller holes . I don't actually know what (if anything) is available as I have not looked into it. The kit shock pistons could even be solid for all I know. In that case I would mess with a thicker oil. Was running stock vintage Tamiya oil. Also not sure if the rere kit shocks are the same as my vintage car.
The Fox is probably faster because of the shocks and It had ball-bearings on all four wheels and 2 in the diff as stock. I had the Wild One and It only had 2 ball-bearings in the diff but later on i added the 20.000 RPM Technigold motor and i won many races with my pals 😅😅 I even managed to outrun the almighty Big Wig in accelleration . The Wild One was a very versatile car👍
@hubdeep9452 The Wild One was the big surprise here for sure. Having never driven one before...I was not sure what to expect. Was almost perfectly balanced in the air.
The Fox was superior. It came with full ball bearings, wild one did not. At the time, I considered either. After some thinking, decided against the cooler looking wild one, due to our friends constant issues with frog driveshafts, which WO shares. My Fox was powered by a technigold from day 1, never had a single part break on it. Was sold 1-2 years later for good money for the next faster car. When you build it, its surprising the extra quality they put into the Fox. Wild one is much simpler, gives you the opposite impression, more like a glorified hornet in construction.
Unreal little track for the vintage cars! Fox being my fav, ive found 2 piston shocks with 40 weight oil works pretty well. I may have to look at getting a Wild One down the track - was tempted to get the BlockHead, but funds didnt allow. I had my Fox running in Vintage class also.. Have a look one day, when you have a moment! ruclips.net/video/Rri50Ew_I4g/видео.html
Please help I have a new nova fox and I also own a vintage fox iamb noticing that I have a horrendous bump steer issue on the nova fox and I cannot tell where it is coming from or why this is happening. The build looks identical to the vintage and I realize there is some bump steer in the old fox but it is nothing like what’s happening on the nova Fox. There is also something odd in the fact that the left side front tire has I guess it’s positive camber when the top of the tire is leaning inward farther than the bottom of the tire. It leans in so much that if you rotate the tire it scrapes on what is now the new sway bar holding mechanism on the top of the upper arm. My uprights look identical to the old ones all of the parts look identical and I’ve even swapped parts between vintage and new and I still get the same results. The vehicle is almost undrivable. I hope I just don’t leave this as a shelf queen I am pretty sad about that fact.
I don't have a Nova to compare...but having a quick look at the NovaFox manual...it looks a little different from the Fox. Looks like they got rid of that wonky servo saver extension and went with a different design. They want you to set the car up with some toe in to make up for the bump steer that is going to naturally happen due to the faulty 80's tech (relationship between the uprights/control arms/steering tie rod pickup points) that's not so great. My old Fox has very little bump steer when fully compressed...so I would say "maybe" the change in the steering servo saver on the Nova is slightly different? Re check things like servo height and knuckle (upright) ball end mounting points. You can also "unscrew" the upright ball sockets (to pretend a shim is in there) on both sides equally to see if the issue gets worse or better. If its worse then I am not sure how you would fix it without dropping the servo somehow. Try things like moving the mounting point on the upright to inner or outer holes as well (taking time to make sure static toe in is equal when done). This should effect Ackerman more than bump but worth a try. Also...re check the manual and make sure everything is correct. I know it's probably the 1st thing you did...but I have made huge mistakes (see my Turbo Scorpion build) when scrambling to get a car done. I would also suggest joining "Tamiya Club". Those dudes know EVERYTHING about these cars and are super friendly Good luck and let us know how you make out. If any of my buds own a NovaFox and can help Ulises out...please chime in!
@@VINTAGEBACKYARDRC Thanks so much. I forgot this is a 1980's buggy. I did everything you stated. you are on the money. That rubber gasket thing was removed and they just use foam sponge tape now to cover the hole. I still have the rubber gasket thing and had one extra so I used it on the new NOVAFOX. I am going to lower the front end with shims in the oil shock and take out this crazy front-end height. Thanks so much.
No mate. Tamiya were actually really good 40 + years ago when there was only toy grade ready to run junk from radio shack or expensive $500+ Tamiya and Kyosho and a few others such as the MUGEN Bull Dog and even Losi was new back then plus Team associated and not many others. Compared to nowadays Tamiya is left behind and 40+ year old design technology nothing like modern cars of today running lipo batteries and brushless. Yeh it's true Tamiya were a little fragile but Tamiya is such a large company and lost their focus and direction in RC cars when all the other companies I named with the exception of MUGEN continued to progress.but even then those companies I mentioned were not plastic model companies but solely Radio control car companies. And nowadays Tamiya are left behind but I still love them and they can be improved on too.its just going to be really expensive compared to buying a RTR pre built car from say Traxxas or Armma or kyosho. Don't be so harsh on Tamiya they were great back in the old days
What do you mean ? Hotshot is 4WD and Fox is 2WD. I own both of them and the only similarity is the monocoque chassis with an upper part and the radio box which houses the servo and receiver and in the 1980's there were 2 servos one for steering and one for mechanical speed controller. I have a vintage 1986 Fox and 2 new re release Hot Shot and Super Hot Shot which both use electronic speed control/ solid state not mechanical requiring a servo like in the old days. No similarity except the chassis design however even that can be debated due to 4WD versus 2WD.

The Fox was my first real RC car. It was so much fun to drive. Bashed it. Raced it. Ran it on the golf course next to
my childhood home.
Love the Fox as well. Was on another level next to our Hornets and Frogs. Appreciate the back in the day story my friend.

The wild one diff skipped a few times during this run. Could absolutely use a few shims.
Great video man. I could see the Fox was getting quicker each lap. I still love the Wild One man!!! Thumbs up!!
Fox was awesome (they both were). Fox with a front roll bar will be dialed! Thanks so much.

Our favorite thing to do! Thanks so much.
Really cool video 😊👍
Appreciate it brother. More to come in 2022!
I’d love to see a falcon
Love it ! Nice vid
Thanks so much. Appreciate it!
Love the intro!
Thanks so much! Was something different we tried (all her idea to have some sort of intro). Appreciate the comment and view.
A time board?? Great idea!!
Great vid subscribed.. ?I had a Fox back in the day and put a pre-order in for the Blockhead Wild One :) waiting for it to arrive :)
Thanks so much...also appreciate the sub! Both cars are amazing!
How do these older buggies compare to newer tamiya offerings such as the dt-03 chassis and the tt-02b chassis?
Check out our new Holiday buggy video. Was amazed how well the new chassis ran. Going to look into more of these new kits myself.
My first real rc car was the fox, for some stupid reason i swapped it for a beat up, bald tyred 'the frog' . I think it was because the frog and the grasshopper were the most popular rc cars around at the time and i didnt want to be the odd one out ...
Yea...my hood was stacked with Hornets and Frogs as well.
now I NEED to get my Falcon finished lol
and where can we get some cool VBRC swag?
Haha....Avery shirt print paper and a inkjet printer. I'll send you the file...lol.
I can't even imagine the headache that would be brother. Seriously though...get those vintage cars back on the road! Too much fun.
I was going to say finally somebody who doesn't play music while they're talking or driving the RC but... Lol
@nomusicrc Yes...my videos may not be for you. Slow motion has no sound so you would just have my voice.
Tennova Fox which replace this one I don't know if it ever came with those boots in the rear I still think they need to re-release the original one.
I want to buy a wild one kit. Can you elaborate on the rear shock pistons that you would upgrade too? Part #perhaps? Sounds like a good idea 💡
@@VINTAGEBACKYARDRC oh aight!
How about thicker oils?
did you ever find a sway bar for the fox looking for one too? ..great video
Tremendous!
Thank you so much (we had a blast shooting this together).
Did you build the elfs kits yet?
Working on the H.B. now!
The Fox is probably faster because of the shocks and It had ball-bearings on all four wheels and 2 in the diff as stock.
I had the Wild One and It only had 2 ball-bearings in the diff but later on i added the 20.000 RPM Technigold motor and i won many races with my pals 😅😅
I even managed to outrun the almighty Big Wig in accelleration . The Wild One was a very versatile car👍
Is it me or does the wild one land the jumps better? The fox seems to jump with its nose in the air.
@hubdeep9452 The Wild One was the big surprise here for sure. Having never driven one before...I was not sure what to expect. Was almost perfectly balanced in the air.
Bounced like a pogo stick, the rear shocks cost it lap time
The fox looked quicker but the wild one looks better.
How he did give me an original wild one.
Are you going to get the Watanabe version of it?
I don't think so. Have a few other projects I need to get done that will need electronics and such. Fun money going there.
To me the fox is a two-wheel drive hot shot2.
Why aren't you using that running camera?
Needs new a new esc. Want to add reverse as well.
fox looked much faster on the track
@@UlisesBatalla So happy you got it sorted my friend.
The Wild One has to much toy like quality, I had the Fox in 86 and have the Nova Fox I think it's 2015 now!
@@ralphhowing3473 Absolutely more scale. Will say it drove better than expected.
I'll take my tail happy sand viper over a 4wd buggy any day...2wd's just feel more lively.
The drift on the Wild One in slo-mo was epic!
tamiya makes the best body's but are junk cars just shelf queens 👸
THE FOX IS JUST AN UPGRADE VERSION OF THE HOT SHOT .
No similarity except the chassis design however even that can be debated due to 4WD versus 2WD.
hello from paris France love your videos!! your backyard transformed in a race track love it! if i did that in mine my wife would kill me!! lol you are so lucky!
Love to have international viewers along for the ride! Haha...wife is very cool with it as long as the kids are involved in the fun! Thanks for the view/comment.
