My God this takes me back to my youth. The old man bought one of these in the early to mid 80’s. We had a track local to us where we’d use it. Great times. Wicked video
This buggy is one of the fondest memories I have with my dad. Its probably been close to 40 years and I still remember assembling it with him. Thanks hornet.
Great video! As a teenager, I spent endless hours staring at the Tamiya buggies at my local hobby shop, and dreaming about owning one. Eventually I got a Frog, my first hobby grade RC and I drove the tires off it. Wish I still had it. I currently have a Frog re-release kit waiting to be built. Look forward to your next video!
Fantastic! Hornet was my first kit I got for Christmas and built with my father back in '85. Still remember him trying to teach me about a differential.
I share the same story as many others here. I got mine for Christmas in 1985 or 1986. The hours of fun I had with it back in the days, driving on snow and ice, those studded tyres worked perfectly. How I would have wished to be able to shoot a video like this back then, to see from the drivers perspective. One of these days I'll resurrect mine. Need a new battery and probably a new speed controller as well.
Somehow, the Hornet and Grasshopper buggies just seem to get better with age. I remember feeling a little underwhelmed when they were first released in the 1980's. They just didn't seem to be as interesting as their predecessors, the scale realistic buggies such as the Holiday Buggy, Sand Rover, Rough Rider and Sand Scorcher. Nowadays, there are so many polycarbonate bodied buggies available that these seem to have acquired a certain charm.
This car is special to me, it was the first brand new kit i bought back when it was first released, and i loved bashing this buggy around at the time. Thanks matteo, another awesome video with so many memorys attached.
Ahhh super!
Brings back such memories. Hornet was my first RC car when I was 18. I beat that car up crazily over the next few years and it stood up very well....Then I put a Tamiya RS540S red top motor in it which took it to another level with regards to speed. I loved that car and will always have a soft spot for it.
this rc was my dream build..... in my early teens in the PH, I used to read and drool on the colorful pics about this in Tamiya magazines..... one day I've sent a letter to the USA to my folks with cut out pics of this so that I could hopefully get this specific kind, but instead they bought and sent me the Nikko brand 1:24 scale rc..... I still have it and I also got my dream build and i'm in my 40's now.
Your videos about vintage RC cars is probably exactly like 8 year old me imagined these models in action from only watching the catalogue and the boxes in the shop.
The Hornet would have to be the most iconic RC of all time!!!! Great video!!! I enjoy all your videos!! Your channel and "Tamiya Legends" are the two best RC channels on RUclips in my opinion! Keep them coming as I enjoy them very much! Cheers from Western Australia!!!
My friend and I are getting back into the hobby after years away. Although we have other half made, old projects and missing wheels on other cars, we decided to start again from scratch with the Hornet. We ran them together today on hard packed snow and grit. Despite the rear wheel weirdness (where the suspension doesn't function under acceleration) and the exagerrated bounce, and the perhaps over-powered nature of the car, we both came away with a huge smile - and agreed that THIS was why we started again.... Your video contributed to our purchases. Thanks, man. From Sweden.
Thanks for your great feedback! 😊 Glad to hear you had fun with the cars. 👍 Maybe this upgrade would be good for you: ruclips.net/video/EzzyzKSEekY/видео.html
Loved it! Thank you for making this video. The Hornet, Grasshopper and all it's younger brothers are great fun. Bouncing around the ground. So much fun.
Matteo, the videography-magician! Can make even slow, basic rigs like the hopper or the hornet look like dirt-ripping monster machines.... Just awesome, like always!
It is great, it isnt the fastest thing out there however it is a load of fun to mess around with, it is a pleasure seeing your creation come to life! Also It is possible to make them fast! If you put a brushless motor and esc in it, run it on 2s or 3s they will proper move!
Cool video! Cool location! Cool Car! That Hornet seems to ride MUCH better than I remember them in the 1980s! My neighbour's son had one, it was very pitchy and poorly sprung, it drove and rode terribly. Also Tamiya metal gears would fail on them. He brought it to me and I repaired and modified it for him. I had a Sandscorcher (by that time unused), and was inspired to build a Wild One (it looked more scale/scaler) added bearing races etc, ran it in, set it up nicely etc, not as fast as a Fox, but I won a few races even with a standard motor. Happier times, happy times.
Stupendous video! Perfect to watch with a hot cup of Java in the morning. After I'm done I'm heading to my local hobby shop to see what goodies they have in stock ;-) Thanks Matteo.
I love The Hornet. This was my first car that was bought for me as a Christmas present when I was 8 years old (I am now 41!) and it is still running, although the only original parts are probably the suspension, the front bumper and the wheels!
O yea Matteo the hornet beauty in action one of my favorite RC's of all time!!👍Looking good! Man that spots perfect for rc's If I was there with ya we would be running RC's all day long!!
Watched this, and got a hornet! Used to sell them back in the 80's at my father's hobby store, but never got one. Glad I have one now. Great video as always!
I have got two RC's. Both are Tamiyas! I love them, the best part about it is seeing your creation come to life, and if anything goes wrong it's mostly a simple fix, you know what to do with it. Whereas with RTR RC's If something goes wrong you are taking it apart for the first time. Just ordered a tamiya Grasshopper to add to my collection, my collection will soon be: D90 CC01, Super Hotshot and the new Grasshopper! This video inspired me to get a grasshopper. I know they are not the quickest things in the world however they are a blast and there is plenty of upgrades out there!
Hi Matteo, once again you put out an amazingly enjoyable video. I love the Tamiya Hornet and you really caught on film why we all love RCs so much👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Your filming certainly puts these Tamiya models in their best light. The suspension and drivetrain is very primitive but still looks impressive in your hands. Would like to see your skills applied to some more sophisticated models too.
Great video Matteo! 👌🤩 Still can't decide if I need to get this kind of Tamiya buggy also to my collection... Like a Grasshopper... Always some higher "Ace" from Tamiya is comming to my choice... Here is nicely possible to feel the higher power of bigger motor comparing Grasshopper. But hard to say which of this buggy is more attractive... 🙂
Great video, reminds me of my childhood. One question though.... do those shocks work?? That looks like the stiffest RC I’ve seen. The rear tires and fenders never got closer. Thing had way too strong of a spring
I remember going to a radio controlled car track in Merimbula NSW where you could pay to have a drive of these hornets back in the 80's. I remember the awesome power compared to my jet hopper. Eventually built a super hornet when had enough money😀 But l still want one.
I loved my Hornet back in 85. Raced my neighbor on his BMX and it got stuck in his front wheel which made him crash and split my hornet in half. Good Times.
Fantastic video Matteo! Like most people watching, this was also my first Tamiya RC car. So many memories come flooding back watching you having fun with yours. I have been restoring my original Hornet and Monster Beetle from the 80’s, and I wanted to ask what electrics do you use? I want to have one transmitter/controller for multiple RC cars, and reliable esc’s and servos. What battery do you recommend for these older Tamiya cars. Thanks in advance, can’t wait for you next video 😊
Thanks Mark! I use the Tamiya esc, on most re-release cars this is included. (TBLE-02) and 2s lipo battery. Team Orion rocket sport packs fits in most of these cars.
Very very cool! This brings back memories of my childhood. Tamiya should give you a job and use your videos in their promos. This is top quality stuff!
@@DaveyGa Stops the slap but doesn't stop the suspension locking up under throttle. You can remove the shocks entirely and the rear end will still lift up under throttle unfortunately.
@@ValleyRC Nope, it DOES stop the shocks locking. My hornet actually squats in the rear under hard acceleration, just like it should. Same with my Lunchy.
@@DaveyGa I disagree but whatever you say. Like I said, you can remove the suspension entirely and the rear end will still lift up, it's a simple matter of physics and no brace or fishing line or third shock mod will fix that. The entire gearbox wants to rotate the opposite position to the wheels, if it had a multi link suspension system then this would be absorbed by the links but because the only pivot point is inside the chassis, the gearbox is always going to to rotate and pull the suspension open. Look at the Grasshopper, it doesn't have pivots at all and it still pulls open. It's physically impossible to cure the problem with anti slap mods because all those do is stop the front of the gearbox rising in the slots, it doesn't stop the back of the gearbox going down. I've seen people even add extra weight to the roof of a Grasshopper and put the softest springs available on there but it still locks up under heavy throttle. If you're lucky you might get a little movement on part throttle and on lose dirt but any time there's serious traction and throttle it will lock up, it's simply the nature of the design. Just ask any owner of a Vespa or similar scooter and they will tell you the rear end lifts up during acceleration due to the counter torque. Same problem.
@@ValleyRC Have you done it? I have, more than once. It works. Well. I know physics and basic mechanics quite well, thanks. All that's needed is to shift the reactive torque from the shock shafts to something else - hence the tension line. Far from "physically impossible", actually super simple. As I said, my rigid axle cars actually squat under acceleration load with this mod, like any other vehicle does.
@@DaveyGa Yes I have. I have done 3rd shocks, fishing line mods, braces, ball pivots. None of them fix the problem. The tension line stops the front of the gearbox slapping up, it does absolutely nothing to change the fact that the gearbox rotates in the opposite direction to the wheels or that the dampers are on the axis of rotation. I really don't know why you think the gearbox pulling on the tension line is going to magically allow the dampers to work. If the suspension could compress then the line would go slack which is obviously not possible. If the line is tight then the gearbox is sill locked in a downwards position and the suspension isn't going to work. Think about what you are saying. Like I said, the Grasshopper has no front pivots at all, it is the ultimate realisation of what all those mods attempt to do and yet it still locks up exactly the same. But please do feel free to provide evidence of your claims.

Fantastic!
