Great clip mate . born in 1982 first rc the hornett 2nd grass hopper 3rd super hornet , Might just go and buy one for my 2 year old boy , he already drives my slash 4s out on the big grass fields . ✨🦘👍👍👍✌
My first RC car was a Tamiya Rough Rider. I bought one when they first came out (I know, I have dated myself). A few years later I got a Team Associated RC-10 which I still have (somewhat modified from it’s original layout).
wrong choice. Grasshopper II, purchased aftermarket shocks, a Traxxas 12 turn 540 motor, the rear end suspension upgrade, and put on stickers and you would have spent less money and had a better car.
You will buy a grasshopper eventually when you figure out you can't have a hornet without the OG of the Hoppers as well. I have both. Both running hot brushless systems. I like mine better than my Traxxas bandit as far as buggies goes.
I was that 14 year old kid that walked into a hobby shop and saw three Tamiya buggies fro sale; the frog, the hornet, and the grasshopper! My dad agreed to let me get the hornet simply for the reasons you stated… It looks a little more aggressive, and it had a bigger motor and more aggressive tires, so dad was cool with it. It was the first thing I ever started and finished completely. I was so proud to have accomplished the build, let alone the fun that came with it, when trying it out for the first time. This may sound crazy, but it’s one of my greatest accomplishments in life at an early age. I built it, I painted it, I applied all the decals, installed all of the electronics, and drove it until I was able to tune it, and it just kept getting better and better. It helped me decide what I wanted to do with my life. I’ll keep that to myself but you can only imagine. Guess what?? I still have my very first Hornet from 1984. Thanks for the memories!!!
When I turned 10 my parents bought me the Hornet, it was one of my greatest gifts, I drove it for hours, I still own it, its one of my prize possessions, great fun
I bought a hornet earlier this year and it is my favorite car to just grab and run. It's so fun to throw around and it can absolutely take a beating. The best place to run it is the beach as long as you don't remind replacing bearings often!
Grasshopper was my first real rc car in 1985, by the time I was done with it the only original part was the battery door. Many many Tamiya’s since then and have loved them all!
I started off the the Hornet and loved it. I haven't got a bad word to say about it, for its time it was a good buggy. I don't think that it can be judged as a badly performing, it's just iconic of its time. ❤️
I agree! The Hornet was my first RC car! Got it in the late 80s and my Dad helped me build it. I agree about not judging it’s poor performance due to when it came out. I made such good memories with it. My other friends had a Stryker and a Blackfoot and together we would just bash all day!! #simplertimes
I have one of these, I've had it for about 35 years. It is a real ship of Theseus though, I can't tell you what is the original car and what isn't, other than the driver. They are the greatest RC car ever made, and they are the worst. Looks cool as hell and delivers a fun driving experience if you know what to expect, cheap, easy to work on. The back end is really bouncy, the fluid shocks don't dampen, the steering is flawed by design, it's a tad light on the front end and it is one of the only cars I've ever experienced that can both understeer and over steer in a turn. I love these things.
I had a Hornet as my first real hobby R/C. I had a great time with it. I burned through those stock tires pretty quickly. Mine had the old "wiper arm" style non-electronic speed controller complete with resistor to bleed off the heat. Only issue I had with it was the battery cover would come off, but I built a simple brace across the bottom out of an aluminum can to keep the cover from coming off.
My fondest memories will always be of my Bigwig, from the satisfaction of building it myself to the the unique steering which was a rack and pinion setup, wish it had survived and I had it now.
I got the Hornet for x mas in 1986, My dad had the hobby shop guy build it and paint it up, one of the best x mas's ever. If you want it to settle down in the rear, remove those black plastic spacers on the rear shocks, helps a bit, and get bearings for like $15! Great buggy for the day, you should try a Frog, much better suspension.
In my neighborhood, if a kid was lucky enough to have a Tamiya car, I noticed that the car somehow represented the essence of the kid that got the car. Let me explain. A friend of mine got the Frog, and somehow he resembled a frog and his personality was frog-like, in that he had a tendency to smile broadly and smack his lips. Another friend had the Grasshopper, and although nothing about him resembled an insect, he was one who always aspired to the higher levels , thus the Grasshopper as an entry level kit described him well. I recieved the Fox as a gift, and the Fox somehow suited me, although I am not sure how or why. Everyone had their 'RC spirit animal'. So you are somehow a Hornet in your RC spirit, congratulations and may it suit you for life.
The bouncy rear end is because of the freakish back suspension set up. The motor forces the springs to max out as it accelerates, causes the rear wheels to become massively springy. Us hornet drivers love and loath it! They're are mods available. Great car...! Great vid.
I still have my Grasshopper II of the early 90s. I made some custom mods on the body which I was pretty proud of, lmao and it has a 3 step speed controller operated through a servo. It was the best budget car, imho as all others were very expensive due to things like 4WD or oil shocks back then.
Grasshopper if you like flipping at high speed with a faster motor, hornet has better handling as it slides as opposed to flipping, I recommend spending the little extra to get the hornet
That’s, all I’ve done to the Hornet. The ball bearings set & Tamiya Sport Tuned motor. Good upgrade motor if you don’t want Brushless. Ampro Engineering, has Shapeway upgrades for the Hornet. Worth a look 👍🏻
This was my first buggy back in 84, after having tandy cars that were lucky if they could do 4mph this was a rocket and amazing ( they get faster as the gears and motor bed in ). Interestingly I took Hornet, a Arrma Granite, and Losi Rock Rey to a park with my mate and his 3 sons ages ranging from 6-13 and they all wanted to use the Hornet rather than the 2 modern super fast one's, they just enjoyed how it looked and it's lower speed way more. Full ball bearing set is a must. Put grasshopper 2/super hornet front lower arms and steering rods plus Super Hornet front and rear oil shocks to transform it, plus a lower turn motor, steer clear of brushless as it will just wheelie and flip all the time.
You learn to love the handling characteristics for what they are, even Tamiya had much better handling cars at the time but this was an entry level car which brought the hobby to thousands of people. I absolutely love the fact it’s bouncy and slow, it’s just fun to drive. I had many Tamiya models and they all have their own unique characters. Glad you like the car 👍
I like this little build you did. I have to agree totally about wanting to try but never actually have. Now that I have seen this video I think I will get myself a Tamiya.
I just came across your channel. At the time when this the grasshopper and the avante came out these were so much faster and more advanced than other cars. Tamiya has stuck to what got them there. Problem is everyone else past them and kept innovating. I had a avante kit back in the late 80s. It was light years better than what you could get at the big box stores. Parts were replaceable. I just wish I still had that car. I had alot of great memories with that car. I thought about trying one of the newer df03 kits but it still kinda antiquated.
Took me a whole summer cutting grass, delivering papers, and a little help from ma and pa to buy this damn thing back in 1986 LOL. I just talked to my sister and she said she found my Hornet and Frogger in storage plus my baseball collection. Looks like I will be making a trip back east sooner than later I hope.
You have to also remember, this was a low end model. Not only is it very old, but it also was one of the budget models. Same era, but higher end, try the hotshot, wild one or fox (all of which have been re-released). Still not as good as modern kits, but much closer and way ahead of their time.
Great video Ricky and great choice for your first tamiya,I'm glad you rated the car for what it is and not compared it too much to modern cars and what else we could get for our money, I still own 6 vintage tamiyas and have sold a few on to use the money to buy modern RCs we all know tamiyas are expensive and outdated but we love them anyway.
Nice choice. It's what I've always wanted but couldn't afford as a kid. I thought about it with the re-release but never pulled the trigger. Maybe it'll be one the "retirement builds" when I get to that point. 00
I have never owned a Tamiya, just my granite, I got it one year ago (I'm 16) but I would like to buy a Tamiya. This or the lunchbox, they are legendary!
Was the likes of the Lunchbox/Grasshopper and Hornet that peaked my interest all those years ago, my first decent Rc was the Tamiya Tnx Pro nitro, back then i didn't want the hassle of batteries and also had seen the vids of it winning a world championship !. My other half wanted to get it as a surprise for Xmas but the Hobby shop guy wouldn't sell it to her without giving a demonstration on how to run it in and tuning it etc... !!
haha love this Phil and i used to feel the same about nitro. Not having to wait for batteries to charge was a great thing. Getting them running, maintenance, tuning and up keep is what put me off these days and getting back into nitro. Brushless is now more affordable than ever and the best way to go fast which has meant a huge reduction in new nitro models being made. Its a shame but i do feel nitro will be dying out soon and they will only be primarily found on tracks with the racers. Sad times mate
It's a bit like the old saying, you're not a proper petrol head, unless you've owner an Alfa Romeo. If you're into RC's, you've got to have built and owned a Tamiya!! I had 2, back in the day. My first was a King Cab, which I loved. And then a Manta Ray, which I still own. Great cars. 👍🏻
I was thinking Blackfoot. But honestly Tamiya are great if you aren't trying to do anything rugged or precise. I own a bunch, but they've always left me to go to other rigs
@@beyondRC I was always more is a kyosho guy even back then. Tamiya made some good rigs back in the day, or the trf are nice too. But yes today they were better back then
Lol core you did pick an old classic didn’t you mate, definitely a blast from the past, you have made me feel old now.. if you do get another one one definitely go for a newer model, I know your thinking about going for a XB as your a busy man, I totally get that mate but still go for one you build yourself if you enjoy building, just drag the build out so you don’t feel rush, I don’t think I would ever get a pre-built tamiya again, it takes the fun out of it and to be honest the main reason I’d buy a tamiya anyway.. Happy rcing mate and enjoy your weekend, oh and I’ll drop you a message on Instagram next week as your only 2 orders away from being your turn on the decal order list.. Take it easy mate..👍
Academy of minicraft road runner, tamiya clone, futaba speed controller, twister team fat armature 14x5,epic can full ball bearings,20-23 mph.I also put once trinity 9x2 but it was overheated.16x2-14x3 is the limit for this car.
Glad it wasn’t a lunch box mate lol 😂 my rising fighter bounces the same! But fun 👍 I’ve just built tamiya neo scorcher and was surprised how good it is for silly money! Upgraded shocks wheels tyres and 21t etronix and it’s proper sexy! Consider a tt02b chassis next time mate? Thanks for your upload I really appreciate it 👍🙏
Awesome looking buggy think the same as you with this being a better looking one and GET SOME BEARINGS IN IT TO IMPROVE IT'S PROFORMACE. Thanks for the vid 👍
“Most popular” isn’t an opinion thing. It’s measurable with numbers. Tamiya might be able to tell you in fact which one it is. Would be cool to know. my GUESS is the grasshopper.
Juste say you hate traxxas its OK but no tamiya Will envers go trought what a traxxas can survive ps i own around 50 tamiya and around 20 traxxas they are différents toys on that i agree
This looks like the weight, spring rate and oil are not fit and I would naively expect that one could improve it a lot by trying different springs and different oils.
I know of course it is a matter of taste (or time), but i would never buy a prebuilt Tamiya. For me the building amounts to more than 50% of the Fun. And for just running it, there are better and cheaper alternatives..
You did good with this bud but I really don't like tamiya for how long they've been in the game u would think they would give you metal gears and bearings also the plastics are very "TOY GRADE" I just think for the money you could get much better budget RC's where you get alot more bang for your buck nowadays tamiya can't compete with the likes of wltoys and alike, one thing I will say about tamiya is there bodies are second to none just wish there parts would be the same
I totally agree! Bearings and metal gears should be a standard part not an option for them to try and keep up even just a little with todays market. I would pick a cheap WLTOYS over this as it just offers so much more for the money, up to date and hobby grade. Was a nice experience but i wont be converting to Tamiya anytime soon!
@@beyondRC I totally agree with you but it's a shame really because they do really nice bodies they would sell so many more if they just included metal gears and bearings it's silly not to nowadays really. Great video all the same mate
The way you just shat all over a 40 year icon is mad. Constantly. You kids need to sit down and have a talking to about Historical context...and to give you the opportunity to thank us, for everything you enjoy now...😂
To be true, all i could afford was The Hornet, i thought it was a badly designed buggy. The rear axle would snap forward on application of power. The spiked tyres were no good for me as I only had tarmac to tun on. The body shell was flimsy and thin. Did not like it but that was all there was. Now I have a Dark Impact and it is better in every aspect except battery replacement.
@beyondRC It comes with hop up bearings in the box and has good tyres. Usually buggys have spiked rear tyres for gravel but Dark Impact has nice tyres for tarmac & grass. Thank you for your reply.

haha i was tempted but everyone does the lunchbox. I fancied something a bit different. I will definitely consider a tt02b!
10k but I’m number one fan 🎖
Got the pumpkin and lunch box wonder if I need the hornet now lol kids can go a while without eating right 😂😂😈
I think you do.. 🤣😎👍
My favorite was the manta ray
Does anyone know if the tamiya neo fighter is any good?
Its several times more rugged and durable than the newer Traxxas stuff as well
Juste say you hate traxxas its OK but no tamiya Will envers go trought what a traxxas can survive ps i own around 50 tamiya and around 20 traxxas they are différents toys on that i agree
Man, this was a childhood car, but to young, and broke.
Each to their own, I never liked this car even back in the day when it first came out. Give me a frog any day of the week 👍🏻
Modern cars may be faster and have better handling but the stock parts still break just like in the old days when you crash.
This looks like the weight, spring rate and oil are not fit and I would naively expect that one could improve it a lot by trying different springs and different oils.
For me it was the frog.........my brother had a hornet
1st
I know of course it is a matter of taste (or time), but i would never buy a prebuilt Tamiya.
For me the building amounts to more than 50% of the Fun.
And for just running it, there are better and cheaper alternatives..
Hyy ❤️
The Frog, duh...
Can I have a shoutout? My name is Kylie
Constantly. You kids need to sit down and have a talking to about Historical context...and to give you the opportunity to thank us, for everything you enjoy now...😂
It's a pile off
whats funny is its also one of the worst handling rc cars of all-time.
It's a pile off 💩
To be true, all i could afford was The Hornet, i thought it was a badly designed buggy. The rear axle would snap forward on application of power. The spiked tyres were no good for me as I only had tarmac to tun on. The body shell was flimsy and thin. Did not like it but that was all there was.
Now I have a Dark Impact and it is better in every aspect except battery replacement.
Never had a dark impact.. tempting haha
@beyondRC It comes with hop up bearings in the box and has good tyres. Usually buggys have spiked rear tyres for gravel but Dark Impact has nice tyres for tarmac & grass.
Thank you for your reply.
