My sport was running over his RC-10 whenever he got caught in tall grass (the only place where my Lunchbox could handle better than that buggy). Initially I wanted a Tamiya Pajero. Because of that and because I was saving up pennies it became an easy decision to buy the lunchbox when it was first released. The Lunchbox shares the chassis so later I bought a Pajero body and the parts to modify my Lunchbox into a Pajero, but I ended up converting it back as I preferred the Lunchbox's big tires. As my first RC it was a great start. My second RC was not nearly as good, a Kyosho Double Dare. With dual motors and four wheel steering it was quick, but with a 5 minute run time, a high center of gravity and dogbone munching axles it was always the truck that should have been better. Later I upgraded it to Kyosho USA-1 suspension which helped the roll over issues and the dogbone durability, but the steering servos of the day never had enough power. My third RC was a used Tamiya Kingcab. The reason it was used, the differential. When I started college all three trucks went into the closet. I finally pulled them out in 2018. Since my start the hobby totally changed. Futaba no longer corner's the transmitter/receiver market. Oil filled shocks and speed controls were now affordable. Differentials now take major punishment, Shaft drive won the four wheel drive debate so things like belts - chains - and dual motors are not in play. Crawling is a thing. Batteries can self-destruct and burn down your house. Bashing can now reach extreme levels. Almost everything needs a wheelie bar. Finally, there are many more manufacturers in the game. Love it! Lunchbox is one of the all time classics! I've modded mine so much it's not quite the same thing anymore but I still love it in it's own right. One of my favourites to use. I'm slowly building another one though which will only have hopups and not any drastic mods like the double wishbones and 4-link my current one has. Amusing to see people doubt the strength of the drivetrain. It's probably the most durable all plastic gearbox ever made for RC, especially considering it has no clutch. There's a guy with videos of one running 6s on youtube and even he has only had a couple of issues this whole time and the spares are cheap as chips.
You just brought me back to my childhood from the 80’s! Never had one nor could afford it back then but I always used to go the toy/hobby store (very often) and glance at it thinking it looked so cool and envied people who had it. Thank you for this as I was able to live vicariously through your video and reminisce about that era!
Old video.. but my favourite RC of all time. I had one that had rc10 double wishbone front end, 5th shock, alloy wheels, and a 7.5t motor, 18tooth pinion. Bad boy.
Phil... Theres something so natural about your delivery. There are so many RUclipsrs that come across forced or plastic wheras your content always feels so natural and down to earth! Greag stuff!
Thank you. I have always tried to just be myself. I mean... you do have to be a little more enthusiastic for the camera... but I just can't bring myself to be all loud and over the top. Plus the more I go on about it, it sounds weird now... Yet here I am still typing haha.
Oh haha okay. Yeah not weird really. I’ll be honest… I do a lot of my stuff on my own during the week and kind of do it relatively unplanned… so don’t really go out for long sessions. Now and again I go to events at the weekends, but my RC Life isn’t really a social one most of the time, doing this full time can get really busy
As a kid back in the 80's I wanted and had the tamiya frog, it was the only one for me and I still love it now. But now in my 50's I have the tamiya lunchbox and have to say it is a properly fun truck, not as nimble as my frog obviously and it has the ability to roll very easily but it looks so good and loads of fun to use.
Back in the late 90's, my parents bought 1/24 scale models. If I remember correctly, I had an airplane, a subaru, an apache helicopter. I never managed to put them together. Even if I did, the parts are all in the wrong place. In that single hobbyshop, I saw a lot of the bigger cars. Rc cars. I saw an elderly guy. Start one, it was noisy and it emitted smoke like a real car. I knew it right away it was powered by gas. I went to that shop as a college student in 2010. Bought 1/24 model cuz I still could not afford the RCs. I eventually managed to buy a tt02, then an hpi, an Xray. Thats how i got into the hobby. Now I had brushed/brushles and nitros in my collection.
Come on!!!!!! It's got to be yellow!!!!!!!!!! This was my dream rc as a kid. Sadly the shop didn't have them in stock so instead of a Lunchbox for xmas I got the Midnight Pumpkin. Still a great looking truck. Loved it.

It's great to see the Lunchbox being built, they are a classic and fun truck. Just to let you know the stock pinion is 10 tooth but I have 18 tooth installed in mine don't know if any other sizes will fit. Just rebuilt my original 80's Lunchbox with new bearings, just have the body to repair and paint and then bolt on the chrome and windows. Already built a second more custom version Lunchy#2 (accidently ordered 2 replacement chassis so I had to build #2) 90mm oil shocks so yours should fit easily, double wishbone arms, esc, hotter motor 21t, monster beetle wheels (going to change them back to standard I think). Got a 3rd ready to go as I managed to repair my original broken chassis so it will be one that may break again but we will see. Got some 3d printed 5 spoke wheels (bit like hot wheels) to use and a 3d printed body of a Ford Econoline pickup to go on it. Haven't decided on the motor yet but will have esc, oil shocks, bearings double wishbone arms and whatever else I can do. Looking forward to seeing this run with the brushless and i'm guessing 2s. Happy Building
@@TomleyRC Yeh just a bit, plus restoring my Hornet, and a frankengrasshopper II which wont be standard due to broken suspension mounts. Great video, I stupidly put foams in the front wheels back in the early 90s when I bought my ‘Lunchbox’. I only had foams to put in 2 wheels, it holds the front end down which I don’t mind, it’s easier to handle, not as fun with the wheelies. I’ve put a lot of mods in my Lunchbox and I still love it at 48!
Good to see you have a Lunchbox. I’ve had 2-3 over the years (1 that I built myself ) but sold it to make way for me to move in 2018 when I got married. I do have an original release Clod Buster which needs a little bit of t.l.c to get it back up and running again.

Haha... I like them when they are finished, but they take a long time to record and take a lot of memory as I do them on a normal recording rather than a time lapse. I couldn’t resist the grease application 😅
Wow this video takes me back.I was 9 back in 1984 and my mum bought me a hornet for xmas. There was a shop called beatties here in Cardiff and i remember seeing my first RC car being driven outside there, it was a red Subaru brat and i was immediately begging for an rc car Back in mid 80s the cars i was seeing on them Tamiya promo video were cars like hotshot, bigwig, monster beetle.Great memories
No, the one that I can purchase brand new is a king. Blackfoot RC truck by tamiya. That truck was absolutely and pleasure to drive, use, and enjoy. I had so much fun with this truck
G’day Tom, AMPRO have lots of great mods for the Lunchbox. Especially one to give the Lunchbox proper double wishbone front steering! Great build. I got mine in the 90s too, with bearings, a lovely flouro lime green.
I've had mine about 5 years or so. Love it.ime is bone stock but it's fast enough. They're pretty stout. So robust. I still have the pogo stick shocks, 540 motor, and transmission it's the white one. I hadn't ran it in a while, 6 months maybe, and after charging it, I was disappointed. It wouldn't pill a wheelie!!!! It's a problem when a wheelie won't pull the wheels. I wasn't sure of the batt had low amps despite having 7.6 v. It was still pretty fast, but wouldn't lift the front. I had not glued the tires to the wheels. They would spin and then lock tight. A couple drops of CA glue and YEEHAW!!!! Dangerous again!!!! Can you imagine running one of these into your or anybody else's legs? Ouch, maybe the ER.
As for one that love Vans and speciall the crazy 70-80´s van hype. The tamiya lunchbox have been a real dream for me many years. But life been a mess but maybe its on its up and i maybe finally can buy on and make a Rollin Thunder clone

we must be about the same age, i remember a kid having a Clod Buster at my primary school (late 80s early 90s), i was super jealous, as i only had my brothers hand-me-down basic RC buggy, which was actually faster but took 12 hours to charge the batteries for about 15mins runtime! loved the vid

My neighbour had one of these, I had the Midnight Pumpkin, which was the same car but with a different body. Those cars are fun to drive... My dad had the Clod Buster :D
The foams are a smart move. After a short while, I glued the rear tires, they started to slip really fast, even with my stock combo in it. Recommended also, rear wheel mounts and motor mount from miniature manufacturing (ebay shop, uk) ; glad I got those parts before the GB-EU divorce.
There is not much that beats the experience of building a Tamiya kit!! Either back in the 1990's (I had a King Cab and a Manta Ray) or today. I just wish it had been easier to get bearings and the like, before the interweb, etc, and having to rely on your local model shop (I was lucky having Graham at Bexley Model Centre) or mail order from one of the RC magazines that were about. The black Lunchbox looks absolutely awesome. 👍🏻

Never had one nor could afford it back then but I always used to go the toy/hobby store (very often) and glance at it thinking it looked so cool and envied people who had it. Thank you for this as I was able to live vicariously through your video and reminisce about that era!
Glad you enjoyed it Allen 👍
I was born in 1990 and as a kid I pretty much had every rc car from Walmart and toys R us haha, also great build! That thing is awesome.
Being a Kid back in the 80's & 90's was one of the best times. Before Smart Phones and proper internet!
@@TomleyRC I haven’t had proper internet until I was 18 🤣🤣
Old video.. but my favourite RC of all time. I had one that had rc10 double wishbone front end, 5th shock, alloy wheels, and a 7.5t motor, 18tooth pinion. Bad boy.
Thanks
When I meet people that watch the channel, I like that I don't have to act any different to how I am normally....
so far so good :)
@@TomleyRC deleted that... Bit weird when I read it back haha. Keep up the good work!
haha... I didn't see the original reply. I'm sure it wasn't that bad :)
@@TomleyRC right well I'll say it again in not such a bloody weird way then... Basically it came to my attention that I don't live a million miles away from where you're based... I live in Grimsby... Literally NOBODY I know is into RC and I was wondering if I could maybe tag along one day when you're out with your cars? I may have originally posted it in a bit of a sinister way...
Haha I had one. Had to put drag rails at the back to stop it from flipping over once u boosted it…..thanks for the memories….
So glad to see you putting foams in with all that other stuff. Always wanted to see one of these done this way.
Foams are much better in them tyres
As a kid back in the 80's I wanted and had the tamiya frog, it was the only one for me and I still love it now. But now in my 50's I have the tamiya lunchbox and have to say it is a properly fun truck, not as nimble as my frog obviously and it has the ability to roll very easily but it looks so good and loads of fun to use.
You were very lucky to have an RC club
My very first RC car was the Lunchbox. Kit came with plastic bearings ..3 step wiper speed contoller..no shocks just springs. Had a blast with it.
Awesome story 👍
The Lunchbox and Midnight Pumpkin incarnate the charm of Tamiyas kits. Cheap, easy to build, great looks and a lot of fun with the wheelies.
Come on!!!!!! It's got to be yellow!!!!!!!!!! This was my dream rc as a kid. Sadly the shop didn't have them in stock so instead of a Lunchbox for xmas I got the Midnight Pumpkin. Still a great looking truck. Loved it.
Yeah, I expect I’ll get a Yellow one at some pint as well
@@TomleyRC I don't have the patience to build one but the original Lunchbox looks good enough to literally just have it as a model.
Brilliant, my second tamiya, and my first build! Back in the day! Got all the Colours now.
Awesome!
What a sweet build and awesome RC in my 58 years IV never seen a lunch box and I luv it As always your video's are fantastic cheers for this one
Thanks David. It was certainly enjoyable to build 😎👍
I love the lunchbox. It was my first model to get back in the hobby 😅
Yep I’m lovin my scx24. Thanks hobby comps , thanks tomleyrc for introducing me to an awesome rc competition site.
No problem Graham. The SCX24 is certainly a nice bit of kit!
Whoever won that Arrma Vorteks and Tamiya XV01 is one lucky chap!Damn!
Yeah I know!
You've managed to make a build video very entertaining. There's real skill to that, seriously. Well done Phil! Love your work :)
Thank you. It’s hard to make a build video engaging. Glad you enjoyed it
@@TomleyRC I appreciate the struggle more than ever now I've done a few of them. Much respect and excited for your channel's future in the new digs! Keep up the great work :)
I got the Black Edition also.... wanted this RC for about 25yrs!! Great video 👍🏾
Awesome
Sounds like you have some cool builds mate 😎👌
@@TomleyRC Yeh just a bit, plus restoring my Hornet, and a frankengrasshopper II which wont be standard due to broken suspension mounts. Only recently dug my old models out of storage for something to do to keep me sane. I fancy a FTX mauler and some sort of crawler but I have enough to do plus budget restrictions.
Never seen a Lunch Box with that much torque, straight up got the power up and won the game! nicely done!
Even more to come from this 😎
ermmm its was that powerful even back in the day, there a anti wheelie bar behind to stop it from flipping
Yeah yeah yet another lunchbox build... but mate after that intro & seeing you grinning like a Chesher cat... I am so adimiring seeing your passion & emotional high. Fabulous!
Yes, was very enjoyable to build and run 😍
I remember my mate got one of these in yellow and bought a grass hopper love every minute of it
Man the lunch box was a legend when I was a kid I also knew someone with a clodbuster lucky devil!! I still have my bushdevil with the pink wheels. Tamiya still makes me feel like a 10 year old 👍.
The Bush Devil is a cool truck 😎
Great video, I stupidly put foams in the front wheels back in the early 90s when I bought my ‘Lunchbox’. I only had foams to put in 2 wheels, it holds the front end down which I don’t mind, it’s easier to handle, not as fun with the wheelies. I’ve put a lot of mods in my Lunchbox and I still love it at 48!
It’s such a fun truck!
Cool video , I love the lunchbox my mate had one , also a smashing pumpkin
Good to see you have a Lunchbox. I’ve had 2-3 over the years (1 that I built myself ) but sold it to make way for me to move in 2018 when I got married. I do have an original release Clod Buster which needs a little bit of t.l.c to get it back up and running again.
Can’t beat a few Lunchboxes and a mini track. Good fun!
It's cool to see these are still a fan favorite! And still available!
Love how you smell the tires haha. I have some stomper 4x4s from 1980-1981 and every time I dig them out I have to smell them 🤘🏻😂
That is one thing I've always wanted is the Tamiya lunchbox. Growing up my dad had the Tamiya sand scorcher
Sand Scorcher is an awesome buggy
I know you don't like doing build montages, Phil, but you are good at them. I was just admiring the nice focus pull you did @4:06 when I found myself nodding with approval at the way you pixellated the fingers in the grease pot. This is a family-friendly channel, after all...
Haha... I like them when they are finished, but they take a long time to record and take a lot of memory as I do them on a normal recording rather than a time lapse. I couldn’t resist the grease application 😅
@@TomleyRC You're very good at montages of all sorts.
I run the same shocks and put the soft blue springs in the rear and black firm sprints up front. Drives great. I did buy the AMPRO axle brace too.
Yes, I noticed they do a set of springs with different rates. I’ll have to get some
I couldn't imagine having an rc club as a kid. That would have been amazing
Yes it was pretty cool. Although I used to just watch 😅
Wow this video takes me back.I was 9 back in 1984 and my mum bought me a hornet for xmas. There was a shop called beatties here in Cardiff and i remember seeing my first RC car being driven outside there, it was a red Subaru brat and i was immediately begging for an rc car
Back in mid 80s the cars i was seeing on them Tamiya promo video were cars like hotshot, bigwig, monster beetle.Great memories
No, the one that I can purchase brand new is a king. Blackfoot RC truck by tamiya. That truck was absolutely and pleasure to drive, use, and enjoy. I had so much fun with this truck
Dude!! You are pretty much living out my childhood dream here!! Owning a Hornet myself, this was the unachievable truck for the rich kids
Nice build. You have to admire Tamiya's thinking and kit leveraging. Lots of parts are lifted from the grasshopper and Hornet.
Yes 👍
Tamiya make good things. Their static models are reliably well engineered, almost put themselves together if you just shake the box for long enough.
That’s a lot of shaking for e amount of boxes you have 😅
@@TomleyRC This is true.
That was a "wheelie" good vid mate!! Loved it...
Haha 😅
G’day Tom, AMPRO have lots of great mods for the Lunchbox. Especially one to give the Lunchbox proper double wishbone front steering! Great build. I got mine in the 90s too, with bearings, a lovely flouro lime green.
Yes, I need to check them out!
its on my hit list and i have a great idea for it - hope it pans out
This was my first rc car as a kid, loved it
AMPRO engineering makes a few good suspension mods for the front and rear. They fix most of the Lunch box's quirks.
Yes, I need to take a look
+1 for ampro , I put his brace on a rising fighter and it worked perfectly.
@@TomleyRC they make a bulletproof diff for it as well
@@RhoryBurnside I’ve got Ampro parts on my Nikko F10, and Grasshopper and they’re probably the strongest parts on either car.
@@SteliosRcdrift "they" is supposed to mean MIP
I also had the Lunchbox Junior as a kid! Recently built my own Lunchbox, brilliant!
Awesome
Awesome video Tomely, love that lunch box!
Cheers Chad
As for one that love Vans and speciall the crazy 70-80´s van hype. The tamiya lunchbox have been a real dream for me many years. But life been a mess but maybe its on its up and i maybe finally can buy on and make a Rollin Thunder clone
I remember one kid who got a Clodbuster for Christmas, it was unbelievable!
Great video, I got the Black, too. Brushless she don't need😉
Oh so you waited 30 years!! Now you finally have the chance
OMG! That looks nice!
Just stumbled upon your channel great content love the build and definitely most definitely love the lunch box I'm 44 years old I remember growing up and racing my slot cars at the local RC shop and every day staring across from where I sat at was the lunch box next to the cloud buster and I stared at them two trucks always saying I want one of those unfortunately I'm 44 years old never owned a clod buster but I do have a lunch box and I also have the monster beetle and the grasshopper clod buster will be next. All of my retro RC trucks and cars are built stock fresh out the box for shelf and staring purposes. Lol. Thank you so much for the content that you're sharing with all the viewers great job keep up the good work I am now a subscriber and following all future videos will be recommending you to all my other RC buddies so expect more subscribers very soon love that the RCC is so big throughout the whole entire world great job representing the UK thank you so much have a good day cheers mate.
Thanks Steven, good to get some more Subscribers from the UK. You're a couple of years older than me.... but I remember them days well :)
This is exactly the build I was considering ..gonna use my old dr10 electronics in it ..looks like it works great
Awesome!
I remember as a kid with the Tamiya Monster Beetle, I had to save my allowance to purchase bearings. Man I was stoked.
I really like your RC videos. You're not trying to be a 'cartoon' or some RC influencer twat. You are super relatable to the over 30 crowd as well, Cheers! A+ Bru.
This definitely takes me back to my childhood. My best friend had the original yellow lunchbox and I had a hornet. We spent hours thrashing them round during the summer. Happy times
Nice Slicers I wanted a Lunchbox for xmas but ended up with a Midnight Pumpkin and my mate got The Hornet.
As a teen we used to do the same. Good times!
@@TomleyRC I just got the ftx Kanyon to play with. Happy as a pig in shit 😂
have the same memory, thank you for making this video
No problem dude
I got the hornet, I love driving it in loose gravel, so much fun
Yes, lots of fun 😎🤟
Getting the funk out. Project Boxy
😎🤟
This definitely brings back a lot of memories from 89 , awesome vid👍👍
we must be about the same age, i remember a kid having a Clod Buster at my primary school (late 80s early 90s), i was super jealous, as i only had my brothers hand-me-down basic RC buggy, which was actually faster but took 12 hours to charge the batteries for about 15mins runtime! loved the vid
Yes, I’m 42 👍
I had the original Traxxas sledgehammer kit. Loved that thing
The original yellow one was my first r/c getting into the hobby a long time ago lol I loved it
Nice 😎👌
@@TomleyRC that was really cool that you replied! I am really liking your channel and I am all the way over here in VA! Keep up the awesome videos!
This video is uploaded in the perfect time. I just built an tt01e With the man truck body shell and it was awesome. Im in a tamiya hype right now
Awesome 😎👌
The lunchbox was the car that first got me started in RC
😎👌
you just brought all my childhood memories back i used to have a grasshopper :)
Awesome… Pleased you enjoyed it
IT HAS MOOR POWER THAN IT NEEDS. THAT TRUCK WILL FLY
Original and the best. Hopefully I will be getting myself one this week 😃😃😃
Great video 👍👍👍👍
Awesome
I just bought a TT02 escort kit. I order a speed gear, Alluminum shaft & screw kit. Need to get oil shocks still. Looking forward to getting started:-).
The Escort looks really nice
My neighbour had one of these, I had the Midnight Pumpkin, which was the same car but with a different body. Those cars are fun to drive... My dad had the Clod Buster :D
Love the vintage Tamiya rc stuff, my first ever hobby grade was the Tamiya Terra Scorcher.
Nice 😎
The foams are a smart move. After a short while, I glued the rear tires, they started to slip really fast, even with my stock combo in it. Recommended also, rear wheel mounts and motor mount from miniature manufacturing (ebay shop, uk) ; glad I got those parts before the GB-EU divorce.
Yes, foams make a big difference for sure! A few more tweaks and this should be good
⭐My first hobby grade RC & it holds a place in my heart. Thanks for sharing the build 🙆🔥🔥👍Salute 😎
Built one of these an original back in 1985ish painted it white, great fun. 👍 had the clodbuster too, painted that blue.
This is a really good channel.
Great, now I want a Lunch box!
Thanks dude
