I bought my first hornet 3 weeks ago and I’m 46, always wanted one, I wouldve started with evo if it was out. I went to the hobby shop to get some paint a few days ago, all the hornets were sold out , there is still demand.

Pre-sales for the Evo are going mental. So there's that. I can't see any reason why refreshing a 40 year chassis design, is a bad thing. The Evo gets hex hardware, bearings, old filled dampeners and cleans the slate of the issues that's incumbent of the original. I'm a hardcore Kyosho fan, but the moment I heard that Tamiya was revising it, and doing away with that ancient solid axle, friction dampened rear end, I started to really think about whether I should be pre-ordering an Evo. The name Hornet Evo is a winner move by Tamiya.

There are people like the look of the hornet/grasshopper but dislike the performance. So many 3d print mod you can get for it, Tamiya trying to get it done in house. It makes perfect scene. I hope grasshopper body will fit. The most realistic body design for its time.

  • @ahhobby2527
    @ahhobby2527 3 месяца назад +2

I believe there's two ways to get people excited into the hobby, from Tamiya perspective. 1) Re-releasing old stuff, which what Tamiya has been doing; 2) Being innovative and improvise, get the product to be better.
Tamiya is doing the latter for the Hornet Evo, and I think that's a great decision. Yes the original Hornet is brilliant and charming in its own ways, but people have been modifying them. 3D printing independent rear suspension, putting oil shocks, developing new front suspension geometry, putting better tyres. And this is what the Evo essentially is, getting all the recipe from the factory. Because people have been hopping them up quite significantly. And they are doing it because they love to still run the Hornet, just making it slightly more competitive on track.
And I love the fact that Tamiya retain the original design tyres. With a revised chassis, it will definitely unveil the true potential of those tyres.
Tamiya can still re-release the original Hornet, and offering the Hornet Evo at the same time, hence why the Evo name.
If they were to thoroughly revise the Hornet and retain the Hornet name, then I'd be mad LOL. Bottom line, the Hornet Evo is a logical decision in every sense in my opinion. Definitely getting one.

I think another thing to keep in mind is that Tamiya is probably entirely focused on the demands of their domestic market, which might not line up with the demands of the global market. There could be a ton of demand for something like this that just isn't immediately apparent unless you're visiting Japanese social media.

I'm actually really looking forward to it. I bought my first Tamiya in 86. I have to say though I always wanted to find a way to put a decent suspension system on a Tamiya Hornet. This was mostly because the old 80's buggies still look ace, and having a buggy that looks that good and handles closer to a new one has been a goal for quite a few people in more recent times. I know of at least two people who have designed decent parts to convert the Hornets to IRS and sell their parts online. I can think of others on forums that have done similar. I myself have tried designing parts to do this sort of thing. In my case it was to adapt TRF 201 parts to fit the Hornet chassis. The stumbling block for me was getting bump steer out of the front end. So I stopped for.....years. I recently picked up a cheap DT-03 to try it with parts from that buggy.
Then Tamiya did this. So in a sense they beat me to it.
So, is this something that most won't want? Possibly, I really don't know for sure. But I have seen quite a few Hornet tragics like myself online who are quite excited about it.
I hope you are feeling better my Perth brother.

This isn't a minor cosmetic refresh, it's a huge redesign all the way down to the bones. Looking at the reviews, the EVO fixes basically all the issues with the original, and some of them were pretty major problems. Let's face it, the original Hornet chassis was trash. Even a light hit on a curb would break off the upper front suspension and then it's a LONG chore to replace the chassis. For guys in my age group this is the Hornet we've been waiting for a LONG time.

I think you didn't look closely enough at the differences between the Hornet and Hornet EVO. It is a much more substantial upgrade than some different stickers and shocks. This is an Evolution vehicle. It's a marketing move that I have not seen them do in a while. The closest example I can think of are the Super Blackfoot and King Blackfoot, which were an evolution of the original. From a marketing standpoint it's questionable, because neither of those sold well, despite the significant improvements in performance and durability they brought, but I absolutely love the idea and hope it works better for them this time.
From what I have been able to learn, the Hornet EVO has entirely new independent suspension front and rear. A new gearbox (DT02), Oil filled shocks. A wider track width, and I think longer wheelbase. I also think they have retooled the mold for the chassis tub to add strength to the shock towers, but still fit either the EVO or the original Hornet applications.

  • @gyber23
    @gyber23 2 месяца назад +1

The rear axle of the Hornet EVO has a DT-02 gearbox and suspension, while the front is a completely new design. The front steering is a wiper steering system.
Therefore, the mechanisms that were considered weak points in the past have been generally improved, making this a model worthy of the 40th anniversary.
However, the first-generation Hornet was cool. That is why the silhouette has been improved without changing the original Hornet.
    from japan.

agree, tamiya obviously know what they are doing, premium brand that people are still buying after all this time, but would like to hear their reason for not re-reing what people want, the blister packs not being used. look at the best selling tamiya kits, they include alot of re-re's.

I think the point is being missed here. To be it signals an intention to start a new 'Evo' line of the classics that modernises / fixes the long running issues while retaining the true classics as an option. Imagine a Lunchbox Evo! I think it's a concept we should get behind because it keeps the classics relevant for longer.

My first RC was a Super Hornet, and it was pretty good for a first car but also really basic and I have no desire to buy one. If a Super Astute or Dynastorm came out I would be all over that, also a TA-03F I would buy immediately. May just save my pennies for an Egress. Top Force was another I missed out on as I have just come back to the hobby.

Seems to be pre-sold out everywhere, so I think demand is there. I plan to wait for them to come in stock here in the USA and will pick one up for old times sake. I built the original Hornet in the 80's with my older brother, so it has sentimental value to me, and something that always bothered me was the bouncy rear end (!). I think you missed the point of this Hornet Evo its a nostalgic thing linked to its 40th anniversary! After all this is a totally classic buggy as you know my friend but now we get the real Super Hornet that has never happened before! Yeah for sure they have released many Hornet versions etc but this is the first time the Hornet has been generally ungraded to improve performance! Some will say what about the Super Hornet with the GH2 chassis but that was not much better in performance then the standard Hornet if at all in truth!
I see the Hornet Evo as the upgrade the Hornet deserves for is 40th birthday 😉👍
Plus its at a price that does not send us running for cover!
I agree about certain rere not happening but Tamiya is smart to keep these kits back! Lets face facts we are going to pick up these other kits released while we wait for certain kits we desire most!
and let's be honest something like the 959 is going to be a lot more expensive than the Hornet Evo!
Iol don't take this all wrong mate l dig what you are saying but l think you can't over look the bread and butter kits from tamiya!

Both releasing highly desired kits and a retro parts releases would make them a fortune. I disagree the Evo will be a flop. I have heard a bunch of buzz about this and it seems like it is coming out at a decent price so I do believe these are going to fly off the shelves. It is much more than a few minor changes and I think it really modernized a vintage classic for the anniversary of it and I think many folks will be buying tow of these kits, one for the collection and one to build and drive around!

It will sell, and countless influencers/shillers etc have already said they have preordered. I think Tamiya will survive.... This one is not for me either but no stress. But yes I've no doubt hardcore collectors won't be happy... how dare Tamiya! 🙃

No one should ever bring back the blister packs, because it encourages on-the-shelf hoarding, not even shelf queenong. They're also really annoying to open. They should sell the blister pack separately like a body shell for people who want it :) Because yes it does look sooo cool.

I am their prime target customer for this, Gen X with nostalgia and disposable income. I remember the Grasshopper coming out and I bought one as soon as I could. Then I got a Boomerang, a Manta Ray and then got I distracted by girls for a few decades. Just turned 50, thought why not get a nostalgia toy and get a Tamiya car. Bought a TT-02 and gone to town on it. I have 0% interest in this set, oh and 100% with you on the 959. That was the dream one to own as a kid but no way could I afford it. If they sold that again they wouldn't be able to make them fast enough. I'm going to do my own with an aftermarket shell and the MF-01X chassis, the one with the Beatle body looks really cool so a no brainer purchase. But this, this was a waste of effort on their part.

It should not be "Who asked for this" but rather "this is the Hornet we have been waiting for". You are making out that Tamiya is only restricted to distributing a select number of RC's. Perhaps make a video titled "What RC's would people like to see released and or re-released with what changes.

Mate, have you even had a proper look at the EVO? It is not just a re-re! From what I can see it has a DT-02 gearbox with independent rear suspension, new front arms with upper links!!!! the only parts that look to be re used are the tub chassis and the body. And I for one have it pre-ordered already. The TT02 keeps getting new bodies because it is a reliable chassis, I don't know anyone with the TC chassis and it looks like it wouldn't be great on roads and footpaths where most of these would be run. Nothing stopping you getting a TC and throwing what ever body you want on it, but that doesn't seem to be what the masses want.

Would of made more sense to just release the Hornet evo with oil shocks/ bearings as a DT-02 kit seeing the evo uses a DT-02/03 gearbox.
The holiday buggy is so cheap (DT-02) as it is but the hornet evo looks to be like 300 aud? wtf... rememer the holiday buggy is around the 140 mark.

Glad you're feeling better mate..nothing worse than going on holidays and being sick the whole time.
I dunno...I'm interested in the Hornet Evo..kinda cool what Tamiya did with it. Am I frothing over it...nah.
Kyosho has hit it out of the park with their re-re's. Tamiya is being...well....Tamiya. Dragging the chain.
They know we all want the 959 and Gr. B Celica.. maybe for the 50th anniversary? I doubt it. They'll most likely release that bodyshell on another chassis that's been done to death...anyway... we whinge a lot over toy cars lol.
I completely agree with the whole blister pack thing. I remember my very first Hornet in 85. Blister packs!!!
I was lucky enough to get my hands on a Marui Ninja brand new in box recently (Don't ask how much it was....) Blister packs, bodyshell and wing displayed in it's own section, tyres in a little cardboard cutout you guessed it...on display. MSC, shocks, driveshaft, dogbones....all in blisters. That is what I miss. Absolute froth.
Think that's what struck a massive chord with me when I bought a new re-re Avante 2011.

I get this remove the solid rear axle thats why you can buy a competition Schumacher, Kyosho, Yokomo, Team associated, in 2024 dont need to loose a solid rear axle. As you say the Porsche/celica is now a thing rumours say it could cost £1000 as a special edition it is a fragile kit do not drive it therefore is it rc? From Nick London I had a celica with the lights on at night lost a driveshaft E-clip sprung the whole car is an E-clip

Many cars I had in my collection that couldn't run due lack of spares: Group C F40, M01 Honda S800, DF03RA Lancer Evo. Sold them all got tired of them collecting dust. How long they gonna please vintage crowd that are already gasping away on oxygen while they reach for their wallet to buy another black edition lazy re re. Who I'm gonna recommend tamiya to when they are sleeping on the market. They still stuck in ancient time traveling to narnia for bearings while these things are 10c a piece from china. I seen kids toys coming ball raced.
To that evo not only does it ruin the spirit of the car and its unique handling. Then its just another buggy with a hornet shell. Dt gearbox is nothing to write home about other then its around for 10+ years in other models. Like boys we going from 1980 to 2005.

Happened to speak to the Tamiya UK rep a few years back and asked why they don't include bearings in all their kits, being as they aren't an expensive item.
Tamiya don't use 'cheap' bearings apparently so don't include them on lower priced kits to keep cost down. Also, apparently, running the stock plastic & brass items is totally fine for most of their customers.
Smells like bull poop to me!
