Josh, could you do a video about the opposite end of the spectrum: how to build and tune for the most efficient quad possible? I'd like to see what you would choose for a super long flight 5 in and 7 in build.
I have a Skystars KM45 esc and as far as i can tell this is one of the durable esc i have. I mounted it in my race rig and after several (hard) crashes I count more burnt motor than esc damage. I bought 2 more of their esc hoping are as durable as the first one.
Id argue that the props flattening out was making it easier on the ESC since they were not biting the air as much on the top end there. Retry with stiffer props 😂
esc-configurator works with all chromium based browsers, so it will also work with Edge on Windows. Chrome, Chromium, Vivaldi, Edge. NOT Brave though...
You forgot to note, Disclaimer: Not to be used on "shielded" cinewhoop work for Real Estate work unless you know how to repair drywall. All joking aside, great video.
5:38 - Instead of USB power for the GPS, get a ViFly GPS Mate. It functions as a powered buzzer and powers the GPS before the fix and between LIPOs. It's easier and more functional than a USB power bank.
We did this a couple years ago. I actually built the same quad after your video. The Luminier F7 and Tmotor ESC with 2800kv motors on 6s. Still have the parts from it.
Also depends upon the weight of the quad compared to what it was before with the pid's, especially with high power to weight quads, the pid's can really vary a lot, normally an amount of TPA such as 70% at 1700 can be applied to smooth out that wobbling caused by the pids at top end of throttle ;)
Fantastic flying, Joshua! 😃 Pretty interesting stack indeed! About the Gemfan props, the force is strong in their family. They didn't break even after crashing. 😬 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
My first mini quad was a 2400kv emax hawk pro. I ran 6s on it for like half a year. No issues with it at all. Was super impressed when I learned that I wasn’t supposed to do that 😬.
LOL, one of the things that saves you is its not a static load. If you did it on the ground without a dynamic change in load you might have had some toasted components..lol Good times. I bet it was fast.
The ONLY way I found mine to go that fast with your exact set up was using carbon by-blades, other wise the tri blades set up just drew too many amps causing the quad to flip out. The settings I had to work with was not so much pids or filters but the setting in the esc, ramp up and such but in the end I was successful, the video is on my channel. Hope that helps.
My Diatone Mamba blew when i tried the 66 percent motor cut when i threw a 6s on it. FC fried for some reason. Had the correct capacitor and everything. Rest in peace
I have a problem: the motors when idling vibrate and make a rough sound that fades as speed increases (both with and without propellers mounted). I bought mini F722 HD Pro AM32 ESC Stack 2022 version and I'm using it with 2806.5 1300kv I'm using Betaflight 4.4 and checked that all 4 motors spin in the correct direction (if I use Betaflight for spin the motors they suond smooth) Can someone help me please?
I really wish my first product with skywtar wasn't a total bunk. Didn't even have the motors wired up. Just made sure everything was good with the esc to fc. With a smoke stopper. And an esc on the underside of the ESC just blew up
I don't know if you guys ever had the chance to fly the Diatone R349 but it was telekinetic. It was about 35mph down from this quad but the absolute power to weight ratio made it directly connected to your wishes.. It also pulled down 90+ amps on a three inch...lol
Hello, I got the F405 fc with the k050 all in one esc stack. I can't seem to find the manual for this fc or any skystars fc. Do you know where i could get the manual or more info about the setup (This is my first build)
Just realized I've done my first 4s build and this is totally possible. 2750kv on mine and as I predicted from your 8s videos these 4s motors are already hot on the right voltage and the blackbox is good😬. 30x30 BL32 and rvs creamer frame.
Yay that answers an unsolved mystery of mine. My quad freaked out upon takeoff just like that, but not on betaflight 3.5, only when i updated to 4.3. I guess my quad was too powerful for betaflight 4.3 defaults. On that note, I have never gotten 4.3 to fly as well as 3.5, which is kind of a bummer. I tried downgrading but 3.5 but it isnt in the software list anymore. I could probably find it on the web somewhere but its just that extra bit of hassle. I kind of wish they just left old versions in the configurator longer, but i know thats a hassle for them because the gui doesnt work with versions that old.
Just fitted some new Pacer III v2 2306 1950kv motors on my previously 2306 2450kv hypetrain rig and my f7 Mamba 50a stack is freaking out am getting mid throttle flyaway at take-off. What would I do to fix this I've reset everything to stock latest firmware target and esc updated to latest firmware but still the mid throttle madness continues to plague me. Any help would be muchly appreciated 🙏
@joshuabardwell thats weird I had 2208s 2450kv on 6s....and with a good esc and FC I didn't even have to tune it for it to fly decently.... it was a freestyle frame... good esc was fine but it did ignite a cheap tmotor esc doing a split s....
I have my quad with the Mamba f405 Stack with 2400kv Motors and ran it on 6s Not often just for fun it still works but i killed 3 6s 1550 lipos in the matter of like 5 flights😂
Just curious what variant of the Skystars ESC was used for this experiment (or does AM32 only come in the one 55A size)? My "build" (BNF) with the KO45a ESC and 1700kv motors turned into a fireball after a relatively minor crash (other builds survived worse crashes)
I've got a old but flawless 6 inch moka frame with brother hobby r5 2207 2700kv with a old school Bardwell yep Bardwell flight controller that 4in1 dal rc motor esc that I've clocked at 106 mph with 5 inch 5x4.3x3 hq v1s props it's very snappy hanging on my wall for about 2 or 3 years now just begging me to play with it
Affiliate link, Joshua? I don’t see it? Picked up a couple of the full size F7 HD stacks a while back when they were cheap. I’ve had good luck with the one I put on a basher quad. 50ish packs in with no issues. Average sessions, nothing extreme. Not a lot but it’s a sample.

So I have bluejay on... and I am getting EXACTLY what you described about the variable PWM frequency. Mid throttle only oscillations! Can you not turn this setting off without re flashing the escs? I don't even see that option on there.
Hey there JB,first of all love to watch ur vids.Actually m new to this hobbie, and i need a suggestion,m building a quadcopter and the issue is i got mamba mk3 stack which has only 5v bec out and the Vtx i got is an Akk Raceranger which requires 1600mw power,so the question is should i got for an individual 12v BEC or a Normal 2/3A 9-12v stepdown voltage regulator?Thnkx
Im running the mamba f722 mini mk3 and akk fx2 ultimate mini, i just use the vbat pad from the fc to run the vtx. Not a single problem to this day besides noise as i havent installed a capacitor on the esc. If u just add a capacitor to the xt60 or the esc power pad i bet it would eliminate most of the noise.
Me, spamming the FAA Drone Zone waiver applications with all sorts of requests to fly fast, or to fly 20 minutes after twilight... (Spoiler alert, it's actually pretty easy to do)
It has a BMI 270 gyro, so of course you had to get different (or stronger) filtering options than with the old 30x30 stack wich had the mpu 6000, I guess.
I've been comparing mpu6000 and bmi 270 for a while now. It's pretty much the same. I even have a mpu 6000 fc which actually needs more filtering than my other parts.
Regarding 21:55 ... if you even thinking about doing it, go for 163.5+ mph and claim a Genius World Record. A good number to aim for would be 186+ mph .. .300+ km/h. Different firmware, different props, can you really say the new FC is flying worse when you are not running the same config? Interesting video, have been running AM32 and have blown a couple of blheli32 ESCs recently but the Skystars AM32 are holding up well.
Bardwell you never tried the old pids and filters. You only tweaked the defaults once and didn't play with esc settings after setting this up. Dont think it's fair at all to say the fc is noisier without any attempts to validate it.
For sure. I wasn't interested in doing a big in-depth comparison between the two. It was just my impression. The old PIDs and filters were from BF 4.2 anyway, so directly copying them I'm not sure would be fair. I can say, however, that the old FC and ESC could at least hover on default 4.2 PIDs and filters, but 4.3 default PIDs are more aggressive, so I'm not sure that's fair either.
@@JoshuaBardwell fair, didnt realize the last batch could fly on 4.2 defaults. I would be interested to see if you could tune out the bad behaviours and get it working really well. Tuning aircraft like that has always been more entertaining than typical aircraft.
@Russell Phelan even with the sliders turned down ridiculously low, this quad still had some noise-related issues and wasn't flying perfectly whereas the other quad had higher PIDs, less filtering, and flew better. So which direction is the tuning going to go? We're going to turn the PIDs and filters down even further and it's going to fly worse? That's what I based my opinion on. To do a fair comparison, I would have to upgrade the old FC to BF 4.3, then do a detailed PID tune on each FC, and etc. That might make a good video, but it's not the video I was making at this time.
