  • It's raining inside my sailboat. If you'd like to see how I deal with leaking windows check this video out. We remove all 7 of the salon windows (very difficult) to prepare, paint, and re-caulk them to seal them from the elements. This was a much-needed job on the Oyster.

    G'day James, I have rebed and replaced a lot of windows & hatches on boats over the past 18 years. I usually repair or refit sailing & open water cruising boats & yachts. Oyster boats are absolutely notorious for their windows. They are definitely a pain in the arse. They recess them so bloody deep. However, when the leaking or damaged windows and hatches are completed, she's an absolute beaut mate. Plus, not having water leak throughout the interior of the boat, is always a huge bonus ;) Kudos to your wonderful helper, because those windows were not easy! Cheers from Margaret River, Western Australia!!!

    Hello James I'm working in the silicone and pu business. The best way to make it water and airtight are elastic MS polymer sealands. But never compres it completely down. Give it always some room to make it watertight. Any way be careful with butyl. It is is very good (the best)as long as it stay dry and warm. From the moment that is becomes cold and wet becomes it very tricky and it will lose. If you want some more info, give me a yell. I just resave a mail that SMX and MS polymers may not become in contact with coper and bronze!!!! If you want I can send you this rapport.

    A quick temporary window sealant which is fairly waterproof--is Blu-Tak. Get it at any newsagents. Cheap and will last until you can get a better replacement. Some I used I forgot about--found it ages later--black on the outside but still sealing.

  • @SV-Flying-Tigress

    On pressurized aircraft (I replaced the pilots side window on 747 SN: 2 ) we embed a thin rope in the seal so when you have to rebed/replace the window you can dig one spot and pull the rope which cuts the sealant like a can opener, don't know if that would work on boats, but it does on aircraft.

    Completely surprised on a boat of Oyster quality that they have exposed wood in their port and hatch openings. Best construction is to back out wood on all cut openings and epoxy fill. Better for attachment hardware seating and keeping moisture out of deck and cabin cores. I hope you sealed all that? Great work on the boat and congratulations on the launch.

  • @spencyg80
    @spencyg80 3 года назад +1

    If those windows were bedded in 5200 (or 4200 for that matter) they would have come out in pieces...no way to release those polyurethane "sealants" (read: elastic concrete) without a ton of heat and force. Given that you could scratch it off with your nail, I'd say it was a polysulphide (life caulk) which works great right until it doesn't. Butyl is good IF you are tightening the joint with nuts on the back side instead of twisting the fastener which needs to be included in the seal membrane. If you have to twist the fastener (any wood screw, for instance) than butyl is not worth the trouble since it wraps up in the fastener creating a bulge (and mating void) which doesn't allow the rest of the flange to seat correctly. If I was doing this job and wood screws were used (like it appears they are, from the outside) I'd probably go with a marine rated silicone. Silicone gets a bad rep because it mostly gets used improperly. For bedding glazing, it is in my opinion the best way to go. 3M Marine Grade Silicone is what you need...NOT THE BATHROOM STUFF!!!!!
