The seawaterscoop is the wrong way around. Bulb should be facing forward.
The extra thru-hull to which you tried to fit the elbow to, I think you held that upside down. Maybe that’s why the treads of the elbow didn’t fit in all the way.

@@chrisscott1958 eventually they will have to be serviced or replaced and separating 5200 from the hull and cleaning the hull opening is a giant pain in the arse. It’s belt and suspenders overkill. 4200 seals just as well, is also an adhesive and is easily removable. You don’t need a super adhesive, the threads and flange on the fitting do that job. These may never have to be touched again but in other hardware applications if there is something you ever want to remove or take apart to service in the future 5200 is not the best choice.
@@cliffcrowley3756 I know many complain about 5200 being hard to remove but i have never found it too bad to deal with. I think most use it over 4200 as its more a sealant and adhesive than one or the other
@@chrisscott1958 oh it works and if you dont mind the extra work fine, use it. If a yard is replacing your thru hull you added $200 in labor :) People use them on knotmeters, tranducers, water intake grates, deck hardware etc. where it dosnt make alot of sense Owners choice.

I have TruDesign seacocks on my boat for 5 years now and I'm quite happy with them. I would suggest adding load bearing collars ( see trudesign website) that make whole setup stronger and as a bonus look quite good too.
TruDesign is the right choice. Keep lubricated with their lucbricant.

Makes a lot of sense to add the load bearing collars on a vessel this size. But I hardly imagine James will go through the hassle now...

The thru hull with the strainer is on backwards. Can force water into the motor facing that direction while sailing hydolocking the motor.

I used the tru design collars on mine as well James. Some added sideways strength even though they are under the floorboards in an empty void.
How your words will come back to haunt him now...why did trudesign go to the trouble of making collars??? Bad idea skimping...plenty of other boats use these through hulls with absolutely no issue...why am I not surprised to find James maybe the first near sinking with these🤔

I have had plastic seacocks on my Gibsea 312+ since it was built, and they're as good as new. I can't say the same for all the bronze valves I've seen however.
I do question the use of acetone to remove superfluous silicone based product though. Surely this would affect the integrity of the remaining sealant?
Had 23 through hulls on a Beneteau 50, three snapped of during bad weather 180 NM off of Bonaire heading to SXM at three in the morning. Bad batch that Beneteau ordered from China and fitted to boats from 2001 to 2006 we were informed by a retired dealer from California. Cumulative ingress amounted to 3 inches, thats a lot of water coming in. Replaced all though hulls back on Curacao as only marina with large enough haul out facility with. Expensive brass replacements but reassuring. Though hulls were not grounded throughout which also led to faster deterioration via electrolysis. Just checking the ball valve is working once a year doesn't mean the threads through the hull isn't cracked. Always carry wooden bungs and a rubber hammer, saved our lives and boat.

That's what I've been saying man. I'd be taking this opportunity to reduce down to 2 - 4.
Yes I would prefer to have one sea chest for water in for all salt water feeds and a grey tank that pumps overboard above the water or pressurized from the salt water feed to flush out overboard in a pump failiure. One place to close all the holes and you can open one at a time to find your leak, most superyachts and even cruise ships have something like this as it is far simpler to maintain but this modification would require a lot more plumbing and re-routing so would delay splash day.
And one of them failed the other day and he started sinking.
Those valves are fine !
Guys, he commented yesterday (on the sinking video) that it wasn't the Thru Hull that caused the problem, but the depth transducer!
All the while my Maxi Magic 28 having only 3 fittings to swap.. 😁

I just saw a video of lightning hitting the main mast of a sailboat, is there any type of protection to prevent damage? Like grounding the mast to the keel?
instead of cutting the glue tube at an angle, cut a little Vee out of the tip, then it leaves an upright bead.... WHen I was a kid, one of the local pharmacies was selling a face cleaner that was mostly acetone... you could wash your face with soap then wipe it off with a bit of the acetone cleaner on cottonwool, and it would still come off dirty.
There should be a disclaimer on this video saying this is how not to install thruhull fittings.
Looks like many people do mount the last truhull (engine water cooling ) wrong, the bulb is forward to create underpressure to have a better flow.

They're actually high strength composite and nylon. No fissures or cracks over time. Good stuff. Marelon is the other mfg.
Peter I did actually watch the video again . It was a plastic through hole. But I'm glad I read the comments. Some are pretty rude but the one that sticks out is the water alarm bilge alarm why wasn't there one. With all the troubles you've having you've got to think safety first. I'm working on buying my own cat. I hope it works out . But anyways . I wish I was closer to you. I would help you fix it . I'm not that far away from the northwest passage. I think it's closer than where you are.

the video at 9:50 is the exact thru-hole that sheared off, causing the boat to (almost) sink, as it matches the 50 second mark on the (we're sinking vid)
I think the gray or black speed transducer just forward of that thru hull seen at 9:50 turned out to be the cause of water ingress, not the thru-hull he was filming here.

I did mine 3 years back with US and Brit bronze, DONT use Chinese fittings as their foundries suck. People are finding they go pink in 5 years
Some of mine were over 40 years and fine, but I thought I should do them anyways.
Looking good, however you got the engine water intake grated thru hull backwards, the grates are supposed to face aft. The way you have it installed act like a scoop for debris.
Most likely for the watermaker, but regardless, they are installed with the opening forward (otherwise, an eddy/vacuum forms and water would actually be drawn out).

Looked into it further, water intake scoop definitely should face aft.
It wasn't the through hulls that failed... it was the original log (speed sensor) that either snapped or popped out for some reason. I'm looking forward to the proper update.

@@nicholaskeur - yes! However there are way to many through holes in a boat that size. I mean maybe an engine raw water intake - two for the heads (maybe)... or one for the black water tank...so maybe 5 are plenty!
I am always convinced that brass is better and even them sometimes doesn't work but surely it's much better than them pvc
The last through hull at 4:10 is installed back to front , the grill ( strainer ) section of the intake should face aft , not forward . Any debris will be driven INTO the strainer while under way instead of the blank nose shedding debris from the strainer .
My thoughts too, it just looked wrong.

That's not how they are on either of my boats. I think if you point them backwards it'll create suction under way
G'day , the best way I've found to soften hoses is a hot air gun blowing down the tube....better & quicker than hot water....cheers

Pretty sure the bottom threads are straight to match the thru hull, and the top threads are tapered pipe threads to match the hose barb threads.
Were those marelon through hulls?
Re: Plastic fittings. Not a fan of them below the waterline, nor on the engine.
Make sure the thru-hulls are well-protected from shifting cargo, and tie an appropriately sized wood plug to each one, in case of breakage. 19 does seem a bit excessive. At some point, a sea chest makes better sense, and is certainly safer.
Full disclosure: I have 5 bronze TH's in my 32' cutter, which is about 5 too many.
These fittings are certified to ABYC H-27 standards (if you use the load bearing collars which James didn't). This means they can handle 500 pounds of load for up to 30 seconds. There aren't many through hull fittings that can actually do this. And these fittings can't dezincify.
@@rayjay1770 All well and good, but what about the handles? It's assumed these are "adequately tested" and won't break, buy (News flash!) they do.
I get the anti-corrosive appeal of plastic, but it's misguided. Plastic may not "corrode", but it does decay. UV merely accelerates the process.
And it goes without saying: A broken TH near port, is much different than one broken at sea (that you may not realize until it's too late).
Edit: Plastic TH's appeal to the cost and maintenance-adverse, and those who don't care to implement proper electrical grounding, or regularly cycle their bronze TH's.
Which is fine, so long as the compromises are well understood.

James how come you didn't use ptfe pipe thread tape on the threads. Cheap, cheap and will never bind or corrode. Also, you'll never have an issue getting things undone or sealant ending up on the ball and seals. Just a thought buddy..Capt Kaz
teflon tape can cause plastic fittings to crack if the installer is a bit rough and uses too much tape,I would be more concerned with the valves seizing with age. Bronze valves that are used last a dam long time

True design are the lloyds rated plastic under waterline fittings, but tbh only for non foot traffic areas, lazerettes should have bronze or dzr

TRU BLUE are great for yachts. I would be concerned about how much loose material is in your bilge. It’s likely to block your bilge pumps should you need to pump out water in the boat. Just saying.
I don't keep anything in my bilge. Personal choice.

People, there are two types of videos on most RUclips channels, edited videos and live videos. It should go without having to be said, but here it goes anyway.........Edited videos take weeks to months to produce, live videos are (wait for it) live and in real time. Live videos are nearly always labeled as such and can be ignored if it taxes your brain to keep the timelines straight.

Brass should never be used in salt water exposure!

Pro tip clean the 5200 execs with little warm soapy water then no Acetone has to be used that can potentially eat a small hole.
You. Should use. Teflon tape not structural adhesive. On valve threads.
Bullshit! I'm a plumber, Teflon tape is crap on thru hull, if you put too much it can crack the fitting, too little & it'll leak! I used black Sikaflex, no worries! 👍🇦🇺
Tru design recommend a polyurethane sealant on the treads

That explains your over priced billings and lack of intelligence Pipe thread sealer pst teflon paste is serviceable teflon tape is next best. choice Boats reguire service it never cracked any. Fitting. BEING brain dead and over tightening a fitting is the only way. It would crack .Keep working on houses. You Have no Marine skills
