BOAT REFIT TIME: First impressions of the new Oyster Yacht

  • The first days aboard a new 50' Sailboat are a bit overwhelming! The teak decks, the mosquitos, the batteries, the water... Will I be able to tackle ALL these things before I have to travel? Where will the money come from? How long will it take? Do I have the skills? Where will I get the parts?
All this and more in this week's episode.
**I'm temporarily changing the format of the videos until I get crew to help me out. They will be a bit more raw and uncut in a V-LOG style. That will allow me to put MORE content out while I refit the boat. Lmk if you like. :)

Great vid James I'm looking forward to your progress. In Australia we have cheap air-conditioners called window rattlers, they're an all in one unit you just stick in a house window, however on a boat you can stick them on the deck and build a wooden air duct to divert the cool air down a hatch. A small unit would easily cool your bedroom and keep the mosquito's out, not sure how expensive they are there?

You should find a couple of local girls who clean houses and pay them a couple of green backs and let them clean the interior. Some times it's just worth the money while you concentrate on the heavy duty jobs. I would probably start with sealing the interior from water coming in.

Hi James. I restored a 1992 Riva 50 Superamerica HP over the past year. Like your Oyster, it had been sitting for 4 years waiting for someone to come along and clean and refit her. There is nothing like bringing a premium quality boat back to life other than building a brand new one from scratch. FYI, one of the jobs was to chisel out the rotted out teak deck off the aft deck and replace it with Top Teak from Australia at half the cost of Seadeck. I love it, and it will supposedly last forever, unlike Seadeck or Flexi-teak, which needs replacing in 8-10 years. This stuff is pretty much maintenance free and is not foam; it really looks like teak, and cleans easily. It is super durable, and I installed it myself in 2 days. I’ll be putting it on my new 48’ custom cat after she’s finished in about 2-3 years. The after rewards by far surpass the labor.

On the decking you have to decide what your needs for the boat are. Teak decks require a tremendous amount of time and effort to install and maintain. The false teak looks just as good, stays looking good longer and can look that way in a weekend.

First thing I did was replace the golf cart batteries to get power. Clean the fuel tanks put fresh fuel, fuel filters ect. Running rigging changed out cutlass bearing new shaft log hose. Check thru hulls ect hose clamps hoses. I put new transmission gear shifter cables. Ya just do the main important stuff and get Her in the water! Buff and Wax that Blue hull before Splash! James, The teak's worth trying to keep on a Oyster if you can. The next buyer will pay you a much better price for the boat. There is about 8 to 10mm of teak left. You just need to get a Record 43 grooving plane ($30 used on ebay) and cut the grooves right down to the gel coat then fill with about $1500 worth of TDS 440 and sand it flat. It's surprisingly quick and easy to do. I did it on my Najad. It's good for another 10 years. It's easier than removing the teak completely and cheaper than replacing with real teak (about $50k) or replacing with fake teak ($30k). It's worth having a go on a section before you consider the alts. If you want more info on how to do it get in touch.

Block those decks with a pumice block, dig out the old caulking first. Re-caulk with black butal. Do not worry about smearing it. Then re-sand with a pumice block and you will have perfect re-caulked lines. There is plenty to work with. The only issue would be a soft deck under the teak and you can determine that ahead of time. I’m speaking from experience.

Coming from someone who tried to save teak decks on a Formosa against the advice from many sailors. You can spend the next 14 months ripping out caulking trying to make what's there the best it can be it'll still not be any good. Or you can take the right step and rip it all off and grind it down then paint the decks. The boat will be cooler in the heat too.

    I lost a boat to a teak deck :>(
My partner was a woodworker, and so committed to making our newly bought (but very old) 36 foot wooden yawl look good that he forgot all about sailing, and fell in love with trashing then installing all new teak decking.
I let him buy me out, and I went out and bought a fiberglass sailboat.
    20 years later:
His boat (with nice decks eventually) sits rotting in his backyard, and I have 20 years of great sailing stories.
The moral, as I understand it; get the boat ready for the sea. Forget for a while how she looks.
    Go sailing.

Linseed Oil 3 parts to 1 past some varnish. tge wood will swell by 18% . Wipe down after full apply. Reapply in 4 hours and wait overnight. What you will find is a hard shell but breathable varnish like coat totally water proof.

I read a lot of the comments. I guess from reading them you have to determine priorities. As I see it clean the boat if you get some girls OK. Stop the leaks. Cover the boat. Mechanical , Electrical The last thing is the Teak deck A mountain is climbed on step at a time. Having built a boat that is the mental challenge. Cutting down on editing is a Smart thing to do at this time. We love the rebuilding.

Wow, like an Odd Life Crafting take two - you might even have more work and theirs was on the hard far longer! Looking forward to seeing the refit - best of luck!

With all the damage to the window seals I expect you got to this boat just in time. Much longer and the water infiltration would have really started to degrade everything. Nice find.

G’day James, I reckon you said the boat’s dry-docked currently in Curaçao? One of me blokes bought a 1495 Dazcat that was in Curaçao. I flew over from Western Australia to help rebuild both damaged hulls. The previous owner really butchered the forward hulls. Thankfully we were able to fix her completely. It took an absolute shitload lot of carbon composite, foam and glass, but me mate was able to eventually sail her all the way back to New Zealand! We hired locals for cheap to help clean the boat why we repaired all the structural damage. Flying in all the bloody supplies was wicked expensive. Thankfully we saved a lot of money just hiring locals to help out. Good luck mate with your refit. Make sure to Re-Bed everything on the deck that can possibly leak, so the inside of the boat isn’t leaking like a sieve mate. Cheers from Margarets River, Western Australia.

Please, please, PLEASE... do a google search for "synthetic teak decking" and look at images. It's got to be more affordable than actual teak... A lot of the fishing channels I watch are using this stuff, foam decking, on their boat refits. I'm rooting for you James! I wish I could help more...

Know it is a lot of work, but what a great boat. Glad you got a monohull. Overall more reliable than kats, imo. Can see lots of memories for you on this boat, and can see babes lining up at the dock to get on. Lol. Great investment and thanks for posting.
