  • AT LAST, THE LONG AWAITED R110A VIDEO HAS FINALLY ARRIVED! On a summer afternoon in 1993 the R110A was picked up as it came into East 180th St. and was taped to 149th St-Grand Concourse (Mott Ave). THE TRAIN-The R110A and it's IND sister the R110B were prototype trains built in the early '90's by Kawasaki (R110A) and Bombardier (R110B) for the MTA to test for the next generation of subway cars to replace its aging fleet. The cars were delivered in 1992 to much fanfare and were tested on the number 2 line for the IRT and the A line for the IND or B division. The R110A was the prototype for the R142/142A subway cars currently in use. The R110B train was the prototype for the R143/160 equipment now currently in use on the IND//BMT system. Some of the major differences in the R110A to the R142's can be seen and heard in this video. The announcements were made by a female voice that also included the "stand clear of the closing doors" announcements. The doors make a rather annoyingly "eek,eek,eek", warning sound when the doors are closing as opposed to the more pleasant "ding,dong" chime that the R142's have. Also, the R110A cars were the only IRT cars to have transverse style seating similar to the early IND/BMT cars as the R1/9, R-10 and the R44/46 series. Each car's seats were different colors. Car 8001 in the video had red seats while 8002 had yellow seats. The R110A's service life was relatively short, being retired in 2000 after only 8 years of service, as was the R110B . The R110A cars are currently in storage.

    The amazing thing is, these things can inform the designs of future railcars.
    It's 2023 now and the R211s went forward with wider doors than usual, at 58 inches instead of 50 (the doors on this R110A are 63 inches wide), and this is where they'll explore open gangways for the first time.
    The R110A ticks both those boxes, with super wide doors as well as wide storm doors that could be the basis for open gangways.

    The R110A cars were the only IRT cars ever to have transverse seats. There was one set on each side of the car, for a total of 8 people per car able to face forward or backward, rather than face the opposite side/edge of the car.

    God I feel old! I remember actually calling the MTA to try and get departure times so I could ride this. You could do that back then without the FBI showing up to your door. I rode it a few times. The announcements were actually better than the 142s, but those door chimes! Not many available seats, but the multicolor and front facing seats were a nice touch. Kinda feel bad this poor train didn't see much passenger service!

    I remember when I first saw this train on the (2), i rode it from Allerton to Nevins. I could’ve rode it back home but my mom wanted to take the (6). Sometimes they had this train on the (5) to Nereid. Since back in the day all the trains on the (2) and (5) were Redbirds, I used to call this train the “Silver (2)”. I always loved the 110a’s. Away from the 142a’s, this was my favorite train. Even wish I had the prototype that was in the transit museum for some time.

Im actually baffled to see a LED sign in the car (I thought it was new for the R142 which came out about 7 years later) but clearly I underestimated how much technology existed in the early 90s, also the beep for the doors closing reminds me of the metro north or just any other transit system.

    Thanks for your comments, subwayfantx 1608. The reason why the R110A & R110B trains had a short service life was because the trains were purchased in 1992 to test new features that would later be used in the next generation subway cars that they would be replacing,including the Redbird equipment on the IRT and the R32, 38, 40, 42 equipment on the IND/BMT. Unfortunately the R110A was plagued with brake problems and the R110B had electrical problems which forced their retirement.

    What do you mean? The MTA allows videography, I've never had any trouble. The PATH is another story.

      Same. When I was growing up, I saw them from time to time on the 2 line (which was the line closest to where I lived at the time). My sister and mother got to ride on one and were impressed by it. This would've been around 1996.

    I rode these groups of R110A cars once back since 1994 to 1996 to and from 96/Bway to Jackson Avenue on the 2 train, the cars can remind me of subway from other states like LA/ Chicago/ Washington DC and others, therefore the cars are pretty much too small, the measurements of top to bottom too small the entry doors too wide widths and not enough seatings too, I do say we need new car companies to be redevelope in the USA because buying trains cars from outta countries overseas is indecent!

    Why Does Almost Every Train Name Start With r?

    • @ejcruz9514
      @ejcruz9514 5 лет назад +2

      When the R1-R9 order was made, R was the prefix for the contract, so R (Order) 1 to R (Order) 9, throughout the years they stood with the letter R in front of the order number, for example, the R143's order number is, 143.
