Riding a Fishbowl to Parkchester - 1998 NY Bus Service

  • The only better way to ride a fishbowl than sticking your elbow out the rear most side window was to ride in the front seat of an 8 cylinder express coach through scenic cityscape. Enjoy this ride as if you were an actual passenger on this last relic of the most recognizable 20th century North American diesel powered transit bus. The new look remained in production into the early 1980s in Canada. Some of these were imported by NYC private bus carriers. New York Bus Service was able to keep these running long after all the others let them go, and I believe, without extensive body rebuilding. Wear and tear was at a minimum since many coaches were only required for two rush hour trips per day. The Madison Avenue bus lane is the only dual bus lane in NYC and was introduced just before the 1982 delivery of this coach. As you can can see, it was well enforced in 1998 and provides substantial time savings. The NYC express bus system grew very rapidly in the late 1960s and early 1970s coinciding with both a decline in the quality of local bus and rail service plus and increased expectation of comfort such as air conditioning. Later in the video I move to the back of the bus where you can really hear the engine as well as the synchronized hum of the rear mounted A/C unit. I believe the model number is T8H-5308A based on my reading of on-line equipment rosters. It is definitely a 96" width with 8 cyinders and no center door and delivered in 1982.
The route begins at Madison Square Park and proceeds up Madison Ave, cuts over to Third Ave somewhere in the Upper East Side, goes up Third Ave to E124th Street in East Harlem, then over the Triboro Bridge, Bruckner Expressway and the entire 1+ miles of the Sheridan Expressway (I-895) then on to Hugh Grant Circle and Metropolitan Oval at the heart of one of the largest private housing developments, Parkchester (built and operated at the time by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.) There are a few shots of Parkchester as well. Casement windows (the standard in thousands of mid-century NYC apartment houses) are still there. Note the lack of window air-conditioners. The 1930s designed wiring could not handle the load, so they were forbidden. The windows and wiring were upgraded a few years ago, after Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village in Manhattan were similarly upgraded by Met Life.
The song at 12:57 is Roberto Pregadio Claudia In Motoretta by Roberto Pregadio (Italy 1976)
My favorite 3 minutes of this video start 15:24, Madison and 3rd Avenues scenery floating by.
At 7:13 there is a discussion about one of the sealed beams not working.
By the way, you cowboys can learn a thing or two from the young bro at this big wheel!

Omg NOOO WAY!!! The guy walking in the Bus at 5:35 in front of the MTA building (which is the Metro North office) is a family friend, Carlton Willams. He definitely lived in Parkchester but unfortunately he passed away several years ago. He was in his early 60s. So sad. I miss him. As you see he was always smiling! 😢

Sad how EVERY Bus seen in this video no longer exists, By 1998 The 1981-83 GMC RTSs started to retire, with the 1983s being the 1st ones to go in 2000 and the 1981s retiring in late 2002, the 1982 RTSs were gone by mid 2003, while the 1984 -86 RTSs lasted up until 2006. Most of the MCI Classics have been retired between 2007 & 09, even 1996 Novabus RTS #9118 is now retired!!! Liberty Lines MCI Classic #3071 later became MTA Bus #7889 and was retired in 2009, but luckily it's sister #3006 is proudly preserved in the Museum & 1998 Novabus RTS #9514 is currently in service at Grand Avenue Depot in Brooklyn. That driver can really wheel that bus! I haven't heard him toot the horn even once I just can't figure how GM who was the dominant bus builder in North America lost it all. They managed to ,lose the locomotive dominance as well. Now they make Buicks in China.

Wow! Just discovered this video !! Love it !!!! In the early 90's I drove for Funaway Tours and I remember I used to do Friday and Saturday evening Atlantic City line runs that would start in Parkchester . We would leave about 6pm and return about 6am the next day.
Good times ! In late 1997 I worked for Premier outta the the Bronx as well. That MC9 that so rudely cut you off was a premier. No, that wasn't me driving 😊. January 98, I move to Los Angeles, I lasted 6 months. Moved back to the city June 6th of 98. This video looks like it was shot May or June of 98 based on the movie billboards. Anyway , love this video for so many reasons, the fishbowl, the city in 98, the other cool buses! NY bus service also ran the "deck and a half" New York talk for the 4905 till well into the millennium. I live in Williamsburg Bk now and own a converted 1984 MC9 that I bought from Campus Coach in 2008. Another Bronx bus company that doesn't exist anymore. Amazing video ! Thanks for posting!

New York Bus ordered these with the 6 cylinder turbo charged engines with the Allison V730 transmission. Even though the bus model says 8 in it, most carriers spec'd out the turbo 92 because of better mileage.

If you look closely at 34:22 you see an Asian lady wearing a white shirt and a black skirt crossing the street and pause at 35:31, you see the same Asian lady standing on the left hand side on the train platform.
