This is when New York was New York!!!!! I grew up in Bronxdale. I used to catch the Pelham Bay Park bus at White Plains road and Bruckner. I miss the old Redbirds on the 6 line. the city had more flavor to it then, now it's dead to me.
Holy Christmas, I miss those days!!! Those were my teenage years when I started breaking out and exploring the city and surroundings at the tail end of the era when there was still EQUIPMENT out there! Killer music too! Outstanding!
I have the pleasure of cleaning the old school fleet buses. They are now located in Manhattanville depot. Some of the old legend buses still have ads from the 80s inside of the bus. I’m a bus operator now and I love my career. I love vintage vids like these.
Sad how EVERY Bus seen in this video no longer exists, By 1998 The 1981-83 GMC RTSs started to retire, with the 1983s being the 1st ones to go in 2000 and the 1981s retiring in late 2002, the 1982 RTSs were gone by mid 2003, while the 1984 -86 RTSs lasted up until 2006. Most of the MCI Classics have been retired between 2007 & 09, even 1996 Novabus RTS #9118 is now retired!!! Liberty Lines MCI Classic #3071 later became MTA Bus #7889 and was retired in 2009, but luckily it's sister #3006 is proudly preserved in the Museum & 1998 Novabus RTS #9514 is currently in service at Grand Avenue Depot in Brooklyn. I was 2 years old when this was recorded
Also, the Bronx got rid of all their RTS's full-time by early 2008. Sure some 1990s, 1993s, 1996s and 1999s came to West Farms during the 2010s, but not the same when they were running in Kingsbridge and Gun Hill. Feels weird seeing the Bx36 use the Grant Circle back then.
@@kalelc1996 Now, it's the Orion VII Old Gens (and the Next Gens) are meeting the same fate. The 1st Gen CNGs were the first to be retired in 2018, the 2nd Gen CNGs were all gone by May 2019, the 1st Gen Hybrids were gone by August 2019, the 2005 2nd Gens retired from Manhattanville by September 2019 (and the entire fleet by November 2020), and now, it's the 2006s and 2007s that are starting to retire. They're gonna be all gone by early-2022. The Next Gens will be gone by mid 2022-2023.

I recall catching this very bus along Madison Avenue back in the summer of 2001 after my pops took me and my brothers to see the remake of PLANET OF THE APES at the old Ziegfeld multiplex in Midtown. Did you know that New York Bus Service also had a school bus division? I seen some Wayne Lifeguards wearing the "New York Bus Service" name on it. Finding pics of these buses are extremely rare.
That driver can really wheel that bus! I haven't heard him toot the horn even once I just can't figure how GM who was the dominant bus builder in North America lost it all. They managed to ,lose the locomotive dominance as well. Now they make Buicks in China.
I know what you mean GM is not what they use to be. When the sold the bus motor choch division. In 1986 they started having problems. In 1996 when they sold GMC white to Volvo And in 2000 when the sold Electric Motive Division (EMD) to Caterpillar. They been having a lot of problems whit there cars.
GM wanted to get out of the Bus Business and wanted to simply focus on cars and pickup trucks, but they did build 2 amazing buses between that of the RTS and the Fishbowl the last Fishbowl to officially retire from Revenue service was in the US was in Wisconsin in 2014.

Wasau, WI was the Transit System that received the last US built Fishbowls before they continued on with manufacturing those buses in Canada.
‘98 was the year i graduated Van. I don’t recall going to the city yet. 23rd and 5th by the park and into Flatiron building looked different back then to what I was familiar with in my 20s-40s. I miss NYC. The old NYC.
I did not live in the Bronx back in 1998, but I remember these private bus lines operating in the city. The local Queens bus service on the Green Bus Lines was horrific. The City now runs all bus lines and these Bronx Express lines are all now numbered. I now ride the BxM10 which probably was the Morris Park line with New York Bus Service.
I'm a a Staten Island boy, but I remember once having to take that Green Line bus out to Howard Beach once, for a job interview I'd never heardf of it before then. I also remember taking another privately run bus that went to Mill Basin in Brooklyn, was that also Green Line?

In the early 90's I drove for Funaway Tours and I remember I used to do Friday and Saturday evening Atlantic City line runs that would start in Parkchester . We would leave about 6pm and return about 6am the next day. Good times ! In late 1997 I worked for Premier outta the the Bronx as well. That MC9 that so rudely cut you off was a premier. No, that wasn't me driving 😊. January 98, I move to Los Angeles, I lasted 6 months. Moved back to the city June 6th of 98. This video looks like it was shot May or June of 98 based on the movie billboards. Anyway , love this video for so many reasons, the fishbowl, the city in 98, the other cool buses! NY bus service also ran the "deck and a half" New York talk for the 4905 till well into the millennium. I live in Williamsburg Bk now and own a converted 1984 MC9 that I bought from Campus Coach in 2008. Another Bronx bus company that doesn't exist anymore. Amazing video ! Thanks for posting!

I miss tht front seat position when riding the bus. I started sitting there in the front befor ethe rts busses were about to retire since I knew I would never get the chance to sit on that front seat by the front door again. Great recording of riding a classic American icon to the Bronx. When I was younger I preferred riding the subway between the Bronx and Manhattan but now I appreciate the scenery that traveling on the bus offers. Plus, since the seats face forward, it feels a bit safer to doze off on a commuter bus for a quick nap rather than on the subway.
I found out from an operator who was told by a Dispatcher in Eastchester Depot who is an old head from New York Bus Service that BxM11 used to be under New York Bus Service before it went to Liberty Lines Express.

If you look closely at 34:22 you see an Asian lady wearing a white shirt and a black skirt crossing the street and pause at 35:31, you see the same Asian lady standing on the left hand side on the train platform.

I have seen different nyc private line bus such as new york bus service, liberty lines,queens surface, and especially a jamaica bus at 1:25, and i never saw not even one green bus line, triboro coach or even a command bus and it is rush hour.
New York Bus ordered these with the 6 cylinder turbo charged engines with the Allison V730 transmission. Even though the bus model says 8 in it, most carriers spec'd out the turbo 92 because of better mileage.
22 yrs later ........ da expressway now a parkway, two rather dangerously accessible parks ( Starlight Park n West Farms Rapids Park ) n a BUNCH of residential developments😊🙃😊

Not exactly true. There are some Classics that went into the hands of private collectors.

Crazy that these legendary bus routes grew up to be BxM's, BM's, and QM's today. These are the true express routes I remember.
Miss Jennifer Banks still is. Only NYBS used the termini names on their old schedules. The BxM Numbers was added later in the 80s
