  • Remember how comfortable you could be in the back of a TA fishbowl on a Spring day as the city drifted by your open window? Part one is Tenth and Amsterdam Avenues in the Upper West Side. These 1966 (rebuilt 1985) GM coaches did not kneel or have lifts for the handicapped. They did not carry schedules or display a map. There was no power steering. The Detroit Diesel engine and two speed hydraulic transmission would move the sturdy metal body over a million miles. But the windows opened and you could see out the rear window. There's lots to see on this ride, in two parts, it lasts 17 minutes.

I remember my mother took me to school and we rode on one of those buses. I remember looking outside the back window of the bus and seeing cars buses and vehicles behind us. This was 1993 as a 5 year old. Great memories

Comments like yours keep me doing this. Thank you for sharing. P.S. I smoked a bowl in the empty building that is now Chelsea Market just before the bus ride.

I 'memba driving them. But the thang was a manual 4 speed and the clutch could be soo hard. You really needed skills because the Fishbowl will let everyone know when you messed up. I miss them : )

It's a damn shame every window on that bus was open....one thing I remember about those Blitz rebuilds...with the new Thermo King center mounted AC units...those buses were so cold you could hang sides of beef from the standee poles

These buses were all retired by 1995, not 1993.

I don't know about being a Comfortable ride. It was terrible. It's the smell and the sounds I miss. The coin counter, the air assist door, the click of the rear door telling the driver it's closed, the big convex mirror that Bronx people used to steal.

    • @trainluvr

No air assist rear door on fishbowls. Front is not 'assist'.
