- This is a segment of the slide show Steve Zabel Off the Beaten Track, featuring the photography of Steve Zabel and friends. Here we see superb shots on kodachrome and other slide films of New York City Buses from the mid 1960s to early 1980s. NYCTA, Queens Transit, Avenue B and East Broadway, UMTA Transbus demonstrators, and many odd models on trial for the TA and MaBSTOA. The el demolition shots were taken in '73 or '74 on 3rd Avenue in the Bronx. If Steve was alive today I know he would be a major presence on RUclips. The final shots are from his camera looking out from his apartment window at E 34th Street and Third Avenue towards the Murray Hill movie theater on a very stormy day in 1978 or 79. Other segments of the show featuring the subway are also uploaded. Check out the new book of Steve Zabel photography www.makingallstops.com

...Amazing Memories !!!
The 3rd Avenue El was demolished in 1973 and 1977.
Yes the section around 156 St station remained into 1977, and one of my earliest railfan adventures was to go there with others right up to the platform - the fence was already breached.
@@trainluvr Yeah!
I enjoyed every second of this. What a trip down memory lane, both visually and aurally. Thanks!
Wow! I loved your video. So many xbuses, so many locations that have since changed. 4:52 the old Alexander's on Queens Blvd. Your choice of music. The memories.
Great bus memories!
This is excellent! As always Trainluvr, you do an outstanding job of sharing images that stir up a lot of wonderful memories for New Yorkers that lived in that city during the 60s and 70s.
Very grateful to you for uploading these wonderful shots! I lived as a kid in the Bronx during the late 60s-early 70s. Often rode the subway trains (IRT mostly) as well as the Fishbowl & Flxible buses. Rode the 3rd Ave El & was saddened when it was closed & torn down. The Fishbowls and Redbirds will always be my favorite transit vehicles. Good to know that a good number of NY Fishbowls have been preserved and are still running. Glowing testament to how tough American buses used to be built.
The first song is Tea Party, from the soundtrack to Hells Angels on Wheel’s (1967). The third is a partial tune from Loggins and Messina. The second is a well known piece that I leave to a knowledgeable viewer to contribute the answer to.
Took 7 yrs to remember and thanks to no one. The middle song is Machine Gun by the Commodores (1974).
@@trainluvr that’s a good song
Has a ring to it
I miss NYC back then. Every time I go into the city I get flashbacks that the garbage I see in front of me is replaced by images such as these. Far out!
thanks i had fun putting it together in 1992
GREAT JOB!! 👍 ( Im a. B.operator. mta ) nice. Buses. Good memories for me 👍😷
Another awesome video...thank you! I ❤️ NY!
Got a Concept GM RTD in your Clip, it Seemed Kind of Longer, & it's Dual Rear Wheels, Long Beach Transit here in Southern California was the 1st Transit System in the U.S.to Receive the Busses in 77, #4701 is at a Transit Museum in Pennsylvania, along with Santa Monica's (Big Blue Bus) #5180 the Very Last GM Fishbowl Bus that was Built & Delivered to BBB in the Spring of 86.
Both Busses, Along with the GM Busses Built in the 50's were Classics, Not Only Ruled the MTA, but All Over the Country & Canada, Except the RTS in which Canada Transit Systems Preferred the Fishbowls, & GM's Canadian Plant Kept Building the Fishbowls Until 1986.
At 3:02 the Lincoln is a Town Car from approximately 1987. I really enjoyed this, and your subway slideshows as well.
You are mistaken. Try google images.
Better yet, the two movie titles. 1980 and 81. Granted the town car by 87 still looked the same for some crazy reason.
@@trainluvr I hear what you're saying. My mom had one that was an `87 and I have a few good pictures of it. But it did look the same for a few years. But you said you included some 80s photos, didn't you? Or I guess just early 80s. It doesn't matter, because I liked the whole thing anyway. Just nitpicking a little. I realize this isn't the same at all, but I recently saw a very short video from someone else that was identified as being from the 70s, but all the cars were from the 90s and early 2000s (and the movie titles), 😁. That was kind of funny.
I miss the Fishbowl buses! The only time I get to see them is at the Annual NYC Transit Museum Bus Festival!
@MisterBouncyBounce You're welcome. Lots more where this came from.
The el being demolished was the Central Bronx Elevated aka line 8 on the subway map 50 years ago.
This is the best!!!! Man you have shots when they ran buses all the way down the FDR!!! I remember that!! Holy cow!!! You are the true man in NYC. Beyond vintage, JUST A TRUE TIME WARP!!!
Once again a great video! I love those late 50s and 1960s General Motors Buses. Always a pleasure to see your videos, keep up the good work...
Mike D gorgeous 1950s redesign of pre WW II GM coaches, best of all. by 1960s GM designs became tacky, corrugated, overly glassy
, unstreamlined.
@@myfiftydodge The first GM city Transit bus with standee windows above the regular windows was built in 1937 and ended production in 1958.
For all those wondering, the 2nd track is Machine Gun by the Commodores.
thanks for the info
i`m in love Fishbowl and MTA! Classic oldschool!
hey,
i like the music behind the slideshow. who is the artist and the track?
At 3:41 The Q 27 Stayin' Alive On Roosevelt Ave .
thas a DOPE beat!!
I Really miss The GMC Fish bowls and the RTSs.
Hey guys! Just a quick update. I am an Indian and if you want to see these busses in Spock and span condition, you can come to Mumbai. In the 90s our country was going through tremendous financial losses so America gave off their old transit busses to us. 10 years later we got so rich that we started operating through Mercedes and Hyundai busses. A few years later, in 2006 these MTA busses were found rotting in a dumpyard of cars. So we collected around 1800 MTA busses and restored them in their original condition. They look so new now!!! We have stored them in a automobile museum. Do visit my city if you want a glimpse of them!!!!
Video or it didn't happen.
@@trainluvr What do you mean by that
@@sohamchoughule5314 I looked on youtube for old american buses in Mumbai but found nothing. Lots of UK buses.
@@trainluvr I don't know whether they American or not, but they do have an American design. We also have 2 greyhounds back there. Many Leyland's too
@@trainluvr And dude, some things are known by the locals. Understand bro
This just came up in my feed again, so I watched it again. What a great slideshow. But at 4:43, where is that location? If I were to take a wild guess I might say Staten Island, but I have no idea. Thanks.
Oh, and I love all those bridge pictures too. Great stuff.
OMG! I was looking for the shot of the MAN SG-310 for years, but could never find it. I'm glad to see it again in this compilation! Too bad the MTA didn't order them. They have an engine and a transmission that will make you want to stay inside and listen to it for a long time!
wow 5:06 i loved that 1
very cute...
3:22 - Dahill and Cortelyou roads, Kensington! The Old Culver Shuttle running on 37th Street!
2:05 The old Club Transportation bus before they merged with Liberty Lines, now the Bee-Line.
Remember riding the bus from my small town to the city.
thanks!
those were the days!
Wow .. all photographed before visiting there ceased being worthwhile .. wow.
Interesting way of putting it! As far as transportation, the classic GMC Fishbowls, Flxible New Looks and the "Red Bird" body styled subway trains had a personality and charm that were such an integral part of NYC. The body stylings and sounds these vehicles made were memorable. Today's buses and subways seem so bland and sterile and unexciting. As a consolation, I'm glad that a number of the buses and subway cars have been preserved and run from time to time.
What's the name of that "partial tune" from Loggins and Messina? Great video!
Articulated Buses in the 1970's? Who knew!
Awesome
wow great shots of the 3 ave el in its last days....what a waste MTA should have kept it,the Bronx fell apart after that
The beginning of the end for the Bronx was the construction of the cross Bronx
+Danny D I totally agree and its a horrible stretch of road and always traffic.....Robert Moses was a dick
@@chulodanny44 And many apartment buildings were built in the 1920s and were soon demolished by Robert Moses in the 1950s, plus some houses built as late as 1910.
What Year Did MTA Start the Lettering System Next to the Route #'s for the Bus Routes in Each Borough?
Example...
M5: Manhattan, BX12: Bronx, Q77: Queens, B46: Brooklyn, & SI74: Staten Island
It dates to decades before 1968 when the City Franchises bureau issued route numbers.
I used to ride the bx 10 fish bowl bus in the snow and the bus got stuck in the snow
Wonderful!
What is the soundtrack from 2:42 to 5:10 approx?
Hi trainluvr. I noticed the name Steve Zabel is he from 157th St. I don't want to put anymore info but I may know him. Thanks.
No he had nothing to do with that area.
Thanks for answering. My husband & his parents were brought up Flushing & lived on 157th & 46th Ave. They all went to Flushing High School. It was a great place to grow up according to my husbands family. Were you brought up in Flushing? Your videos are fascinating & we've turned our friends that worked at the 3 bus companies.
Yes my first 22 years were spent in the inner Kissena Blvd corridor (PS24, IS 237, John Bowne HS). My room overlooked the Blvd. between 45th and Holly Aves.
trainluvr wow my husband graduated Flushing hs 1969. A friend Joy who lived in Elechester graduated John Bowne hs 1969. Do you remember Joes Candy Store?
what building is at 2:23? thanks :)
NYC Municipal Archives and Library. (Behind City Hall)
The city must have been pretty proud, to purchase Mack transit busses, seen at 0:14. Historical fact : The first Mack was a bus, the first bus was a Mack, made right in Manhattan in 1900! Great video!
Boy! That really surprised me! And I am a New Yorker who grew up in NYC during the Mad Men era.
4:34 MAN bendy...
Awesome!
Is there another city in the country that has steam coming out of its streets?
Detroit - I have seen it and also seen it in recent footage. May be others too, but NY is the only one with a vast system.
@@trainluvr True and it is from Con Ed utilities.
