I am blown away by these photos. I am an artist and I am captivated by these photos, especially the one at 7:43. I would love you paint that picture. I only paint pictures that I have personally taken, so that is out of the question for me. I am 52 and I remember when the cars and clothes looked like ones in these photos. I was 10 when the 1970's ended but because I had older sisters and brothers, the music of the time has been burned into my brain. Great music and lots of talented people. The 1980's had a different feel than the 70s for sure. The musician talent level dropped when the synthesizer became main stream. The 1970's were a great time to be alive, and anyone who lived through both the 70s and the 80s will know what I am talking about.

I still remember as a young kid in the 70s the different color street signs.
Manhattan and Staten Island were yellow with black text, Brooklyn was black with white text, The Bronx was blue with white text, and Queens was white with blue text.

Wow! This is one of the best NYC compilations I've ever seen. NIce job of balancing the music and including jazz as well. Thanks so much for putting this together. This is the New York that I so fondly remember as I grew in the 60s-early 70s riding the #2 train. Even with the urban decay many of us that were kids have a lot of good memories. I only wish you had a few more shots of the Bronx and of the IRT. Overall, nice job!

I miss Old New York I left the city I grew up in back in the late 70`s and throughout 80`s back in 1991 and was horrified and struck dumb by the hipster Disneyland Guliani turned it into after his terms in office. He sold out the city wholesale to developers and corporate interest who could care less. I miss the Old New York which once belonged to the people who grew up in it and toiled all of their lives in it. Id rather remember what was than ever see it again after what its become.

For me, another neat American icon are the classic GMC "fishbowl" transit buses and the Flxible "new look" buses which had a similar body style. I remember how warm they were in the middle of the freezing winters and how their airbag suspension ride could just about put you to sleep (but you still had to watch out for the pickpockets, lol!). There seemed to be hundreds of those classy buses everywhere, now the few left are collector's items in museums.

Ahh, The City the way it was - gritty, lots of old signs, neon. Even though the crime rate was so much higher back then, I still felt safer back when all you had to do was be aware of your surroundings and not go where you shouldn't. Now I don't recognize The City - it's been Bloombergified. Yes, it's clean and sparkly and shiny, but to me seeing the Star Wars Storm Troopers on the streets makes it much scarier than the 70's.

.New York of 2012 is a dying city. When you walk around Manhattan, ie. midtown and downtown most of the people you see on the streets are tourist.
All the live music performance venues have shut down and the east village and St. Marks are now filled with sports bars and karoke clubs in place of alternative music. No records shops all replaced by nail salons. Books shops are closed as well. All the new transplants from the south and midwest have somehow ruined the vibrancy of Gotham. Sad.

Great. Very nostalgic. Never been there but always drawn to it, it offers so much visually and I think of the life style people lived in such an incredible living animal. It can be angry or happy or just resting but no matter what it always looks awesome. In movies photos on tv you always see more. I love new york! The birth place of hip-hop and taxi drivers route. The mao mao chaplins and the know nothings. A mountain of shit and a pile of gold. New wave new york. Thanks for post love to see m
