Most of the detractors come from the millenials or the late Gen Y. The Gen-Z's just follow their steps. It's really a rare gem, that some Gen Z's can still appropriate jokes coming from the Boomers, Gen-X and early Gen-Y eras.

True that. That's why non-native speakers usually pronounce English words just like they are spelt. Since that's how it works in their mother tongue. For example, in India premise is pronounced as premise (rhyming with demise) not prem iss.

Good on you mate. It could have been any ethnicity, even an English person, for a pronunciation sketch. And to say you're not offended at all in this PC day and age means a lot. Live long.
Ahmed Alshammeri it's funny and I enjoyed it. The harm is not the jokes themselves but what might fallow. They could be a pretext for something to fallow. This was done many years ago and you know what followed like gulf wars, "the war on terror" if Muslims/Arabs are talked about like this also killing them and invading them is also acceptable like what happened since 1991. Now it's not acceptable because Americans and Europeans had killed many Muslims and Arabs so they don't want to kill any more or at least they are thinking not to kill any more so now they have to watch out what they say and the way they talk about them. What I'm saying is words lead to actions. They tell what will fallow. You should find this type of jokes offensive because of the actions they will invite or when you get killed from left to right you'll wonder where all that was coming from. That's why Jews don't tolerate any type of demonization even if it might look innocent they're more smarter than you and can predict the future by being aware.
I am not sure I can send this to some of my 'born after 2000, and totally politically correct" friends. They are loosing the point of the dialogue. Just 'suck it up' P. C. people
To the head from that school who had a bit of bother over this - i hope you realise, the vast vast majority find it hilarious and really dont care, that includes those from the mid east. there are always a few who dont get it. thats not your problem and it shouldnt be front page news !! as a head, you should make a stand. you'd gain alot of respect , especially from the community who this clip jokes about. even they feel bad that people think they feel bad about it when they certainly dont... its so annoying having to spell it out.
My family consider this one of their best sketches, pure genius. We grew up tolerant and yet today's snowflakes are brainless, aggressive and attention seeking failures who lack the intellectual capacity to tell the difference from harmless hysterical satire like this and real rudeness and repression.
Absolutely pathetic those that complained about this sketch sick to bloody death of these offend at everything brigade time people stood up to them and told them to sod off and get a bloody life
Gosh! What's with all these negative comments and taking things personally?! That's the wrong mindset with which to watch a comedy sketch. Get a sense of humour people!
this is totally hilarious. his pronunciations are incredible - i finally started to understand him. he was very good - not a parody on a person, just trouble with accents and reading English words, which sometimes make no sense whatsoever! 😋🌷🌱 i think Arabic pronounces each letter the same, just like Hebrew.
The reason this is hilarious: because this happens in real life! I'm from the north of England and people in the south struggle to understand me sometimes, so for people with English as a second language this must happen all the time Haha. And it isn't racist. It's cultures laughing at each other in a respectful way. I bet white people are mocked in other cultures for comedy value. Laugh at our differences, life is shit, and we only have humour to keep us going.
Exactly! 👍😅 Pre-illness, I lived/worked all over the uk, so had to learn regional accents pretty quickly!! Lol I found it fascinating.....regional or foreign accents are what makes the world a more interesting place.

Why can't we all just sit back, relax and enjoy the brilliant writing and performing skills of Ronnie B and Ronnie C, instead of either claiming racism or trying to score points off others?
Glad you liked it... As I have said on a number of occasions, it would be a pity to do away with all the wonderful fairy tales of the past just because they (naturally) reflect the values, biases and stereotypes of another era. I think it is exactly the same with comedy. :-)

This is so clever the way it takes the michael out of the English language it is timeless, I love the two ronnies at Christmas on yesterday or similar channel, its what makes Christmas for me
Hahaha! This is sort of scenario reminds me of myself in some ways. I'm Aussie so our English is pretty well butchered anyway. But I'll always welcome people of all countries/ethnicities if they need help out in public and or are struggling to learn English. I like to learn the sounds so I can understand different accents as it intrigues me how it has evolved over time, a bonus is you get to meet someone new and hear their story even if you stand there for ages you get a glimpse as to what life is like where they're from. Having two kids myself that had to go through speech therapy, which 90% of it was at home, I had learn to understand what they're saying and then correct them by slowly pronouncing the word and getting them to repeat it. It takes quiet a few years and the patience of a saint, more so for the kids. Bc It's usually them that gets frustrated not me as I'm always saying pardon? Pardon? To try and work out some of the words and it makes me feel bad bc they get angry and frustrated not at you but themselves bc they wish they could speak properly the poor little buggers.
The Australian accent is quite unique and not many are familar with it if you grew up outside of Australia. The two variants of English that are usually the norm are either American or British. I remember coming to Australia as a Master's student and stuggling to understand what 'Oy D' was (apparently ID) and that I didn't come here 'to die' (today) 😆.
You all might have benefitted greatly from a 'phonics phone' (my hubby made ours from PVC pipe, they can now be bought online etc) and also sign language. We've walked a few steps in your shoes, hope all is going well now xx
Haven't laughed this hard in years! 😂 To be honest, the accent is more Indian than Arabic. We from the Indian subcontinent are the undisputed CHAMPIONS of making English sound like Gibberish!
This is true of course, but then would anybody write faitytales about poor girls marrying princes? :-) I think we need to be tolerant; we can enjoy the humour and the performance and ignore the stereotypes and the shopkeeper's patronising attitude towards his wife and the customer.
I wonder who'd be more offended. The left, because of its stereotypical depiction of middle-easterner. Or the right, because of its unflattering portrayal of a white, working-class, British male. Either way, this was a fantastic sketch about language and wordplay.
It's not only that though; Ronnie Barker is very patronising here - both towards his wife and towards the customer. Still, it is a very funny, carefully crafted and beautifully performed sketch. It is also very clearly a product of its time. I believe it is because this period is still so close to ours that we are so sensitive to these things. I don't think anybody would object to people reading Aristotle because he endorsed slavery...
Nick Michelioudakis I am sure your right, but in my book it was a comedian poking fun at cultural differences. The fact that it would not be allowed today in my opinion is a sad indication of just how much society has deteriorated due to political correctness. Being a sweaty sock, ginger living in England had to learn very quickly the difference between witty banter and pointed insult, pity other ethnicities seem unable to learn the same thing.
A classic from the Two Ronnies. How anyone can call this racist is beyond me. This had nothing to do with race, it was about the mispronunciations of words from someone who is trying their best to speak a language that they’re not fully acquainted with. This is a comedy sketch & its so sad that some people can’t just see it for what it is.

Glad you liked it Panagiota. 😄 You may like some more clips with the same guys: 'Comedy for ELT - Small Talk', 'Comedy for ELT - Rumours', 'Comedy for ELT - Synonyms', 'Comedy for ELT - Birthday Rhymes', 'Comedy for ELT - A Sense of Rhythm', 'Comedy for ELT - The Bather' etc. etc.... 😁
I've lived in saudia and the reason why hes calling cake kak is because in their language its pronounced as kaa'k.
Or kekaa'.
Well good detail to know.
Honestly harmless sketches like these are worth their durations in gold , nowadays its all inappropriate crap.
Im from gen z but i prefer this ❤.
Most of the detractors come from the millenials or the late Gen Y. The Gen-Z's just follow their steps. It's really a rare gem, that some Gen Z's can still appropriate jokes coming from the Boomers, Gen-X and early Gen-Y eras.
@@KenMikaze well I grew up watching 80s,90s content and early 2000s and I love it of course so many memories.
Love the Two Ronnies. The days when u could make a joke without people taking offence.
Great Comedy 😀👍
I remember watching this sketch almost 40 years ago when we lived in the UK. Until this day our family still pronounces cinnamon as China man.
That was one I couldn't get. Thanks.
This is all hilarious. Didn't get "peas" either. "Marmalade" only later.
Thanks.

Veal and ham pie. Had to look that one up
@@lieschenmuller243 an Arab would never have veal and ham pie! 😂😂😂
Yep, same here. 40 year's ago.
I'm here now, after just laughing on my own, about this sketch. I had to remind myself again, how funny this was back then. Just as funny today! 🤭🤭🤣🤣
It is making fun of English language idiosycrocies, not the people. Word play has always been a part of the Two Ronnies' repertoire.
Would anyone like four candles???
True that. That's why non-native speakers usually pronounce English words just like they are spelt. Since that's how it works in their mother tongue. For example, in India premise is pronounced as premise (rhyming with demise) not prem iss.
It’s not making fun of people? So why did he say “oh dear” as soon as the Arab guy walk into the store? Why did the shopkeeper call him “Ali baba” when that’s not even his name?
Yes 👍
@@east_londonlad8988 oh let's give it a rest. We got enough going on in world..why did u watch it then ?
The Two Ronnies are brilliant as always. This is up there with the “Four Candles” sketch 🤣🤣
The shopkeeper is very good at decrypting the actual message.
I’ve watched this at least 50 times and it always makes me laugh
Already watched it 5 times. Here's to 45 more at least ahah
"She needs large brass ears because her tights are enormous". What geniuses these guys were.
So the grocery list was:
Chocolate Mousse; tomato puree; bicarbonate of soda; apricot juice ("jewish") Cinnamon (Chinaman) tin of tongue; Veal and Ham pie; coffee (c of ee "church of england") marmalade for toast; chocolate "kack"cake!! Hilarious!
It was indeed. Glad you liked it! :-) By the way, with most of the clips on my channel, you can click on a link in the description and get the full script (this is primarily meant for learners and teachers, you see).

Surprised he'd buy veal and ham pie!
Anglicized Arab! 😁

Reema Ameer I think you need to get off the ale old lad.
Reema Ameer well I think you’ve completely overreacted and completely misinterpreted my original comment plus the big question is would you call me all that to my face instead of behind your computer or phone??? Nah I don’t think you would cos I’d knock your fucking head off.
Nicholas Haslam yep
Reema Ameer What the hell is wrong with you? You blew everything out of proportion and you didn't even apologize for your idiocy? You are infinite shades of narrow mindedness and stupidity.

We watched this video in our English class and we could split our sides with laughing. It´s also motivation for us to improve our own pronunciation. Jacob said that he had never seen a funnier video that this.
who the F*ck is "Jacob"?
Who's Jacob ?!😳😂
@@rjhomsobaid2117 Jacob was one of the pupils in the class. He liked the video very much (like all kids in the class).
The skit about the 'four candles' is definitely worth a watch.
Did Nikolai go to the toilet during the video?
im arab and i don't find the sketch offensive at all its actually funny lol
Ahmed Alshammeri good, Im sure its not their intention to cause offence. ✌️
Good on you mate. It could have been any ethnicity, even an English person, for a pronunciation sketch. And to say you're not offended at all in this PC day and age means a lot. Live long.
four candles is all i can say
Thank goodness for those who can accept it’s just for fun which is not intended to be at anyone’s expense!😄👍
I love their humor... it was better in the good ol' days.
Hilarious 😂😂 This is what I call proper comedy .
I remember this sketch. Brilliant. Couldn't make it now without someone getting upset.
I am not sure I can send this to some of my 'born after 2000, and totally politically correct" friends. They are loosing the point of the dialogue. Just 'suck it up' P. C. people
Old school comedy, love it. People are making money and careers from being “offended”.
Absolutely pathetic those that complained about this sketch sick to bloody death of these offend at everything brigade time people stood up to them and told them to sod off and get a bloody life
Hear, hear!! :-) Couldn't agree with you more...
Gosh! What's with all these negative comments and taking things personally?! That's the wrong mindset with which to watch a comedy sketch. Get a sense of humour people!
Couldn't agree more... :-)
this is totally hilarious. his pronunciations are incredible - i finally started to understand him. he was very good - not a parody on a person, just trouble with accents and reading English words, which sometimes make no sense whatsoever! 😋🌷🌱
i think Arabic pronounces each letter the same, just like Hebrew.
His accent sounds nothing like Arabic. More like Indian or Pakistani.

These two comedy icons were just beyond words. I know many people who don't even know their name and just know them by the two Ronnies.
Absolutely awesome.....Gish our worlds gone nuts since these days and many it seems have lost their sense of humour..... excellent sketch👍

I've watched this about 30 times+ and I still laugh. Racicm is not an issue. 😊
I am Arab and i was laugh a lot, its so funny 😂

Ahmed Khalaf I bought it on vhs in 1843 and Charles Dickens was jacking off to it 😂😂😂😂😂😉😉😂😈😈😈😈😈😈
Haven't laughed this hard in years! 😂
To be honest, the accent is more Indian than Arabic. We from the Indian subcontinent are the undisputed CHAMPIONS of making English sound like Gibberish!
😂😂
This sketch would not be allowed nowadays.
Of course it would be allowed. Comedians joke about accents all the time nowadays.
This is what I call classic, brilliant
Thank you for sharing! Hilarious especially at the end 😂
Genius, but please note, it’s mocking the white guy - notice how he becomes very interested at the sight of money.
Business is business
he even charges him 300pounds at the end, his wife looks surprised, and to make it natural he offers change of 4 pence.
Runamok it’s just comedy
@@pollyesther1243 Please. If you see an Arab dressed like this in your country, he is rich. The Arab robes is like wearing an expensive suit in their countries. Working-class Arabs will only wear a normal shirt and pants. I lived in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia for 4 years and the rich guys are very very generous and will not hesitate to tip you $100 just for a candy bar. One time I was driving a car and a guy waved me down for help. He says he needed help to get to a location quickly. He just put a $100 bill in my shirt pocket and just got in my car. I was like, "$100? And you want to go to this location? Sir yes Sir!"
