  • How's that right hand feeling? Good? Good. Over the past few days we've gone over most of the major styles of picking, but now it's time to change gears and focus on the left hand again. Today marks the beginning of a 7-day course-within-a-course covering each of the modern modes.
I've yet to meet a musician outside of the jazz world who feels 100% solid in every single mode, so no matter where you are at on your playing journey, these next few days will pack a ton of value for you.
First up, the mode to rule all modes: Ionian. Also known as the major scale, the Ionian mode is foundational, perfect for creating melodies in pop, rock, and many other contemporary genres. At the end of the day, you've got to have this one down. Let's dive in!
Thanks to Eddie Haddad from Guitar Mastery Method for working with us on this project. If you want to go deeper after you make it through our 30 Day Guitar Challenge, you can check them out here: guitarmasterymethod.com/

I just want to give a big thanks to Eddie and the StringJoy team! 🙏🏾I’ve been playing guitar with bands and on stage for 15 years now and have neglected so many of these techniques. I came into 2024 telling myself that I would focus more on picking technique and get out of the rut of going straight to the pentatonic scale on stage when it’s my time to solo and dive into other modes. So between last week, and this weeks lesson, I feel like these couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. And Eddie just teaches things so simple and fun that it’s easy to learn this stuff. Truly appreciate y’all! ✌🏾

The Modes, how I remember their order is by this: If Dora Plays Like Me All's Lost = Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian. I think it was a Frank Gambale guitar magazine interview article and he mentioned this (I could be wrong though), nonetheless. It works for me! Like these videos a lot, I'm learning stuff and that's cool!

I like it!! Though for me... I am changing the word 'lost' to 'love'. It's these rose colored sunglasses of mine!! 😎🎸🎹👍

This was great. What is missing from so much instruction on scales and modes is the practical application. It just becomes rote learning of the scale pattern with no understanding of how to use it musically. The "wandering" concept presented here is really useful because creating licks and solos shouldn't be about playing the scale shapes in order - that is boring. You need to make it melodically interesting!! Great video - looking forward to the next mode video!

WOW. Grinding the notes of the scale up against the open E string expresses their respective moods. Thanks. Of the fourteen songs I have written, I play them over and over and w/o fail, great surprises occur both in the solos and chord voicings.
This is a great lesson on the I scale.

The only thing I would add here is to sing what you’re playing.

Great series Eddie. Thank you to you and Stringjoy. Question for Eddie. At 3:42 is it supposed to be the 8th fret on the G string? You say 7th fret but finger the 8th fret.
