A little correction. She doesn't become comatose because of the trauma itself, it's because she slit her wrists in a filthy bath tub on top of some derelict building, as evidenced by the blood in the tub and the bandages around her forearms and wrists. Which is indeed a consequence of her mental trauma, but not a direct result.

In other words, a deconstruction usually involved taking a fictional archetype and put them into the real world or trying to find a real world equivalent of those traits and dissect what can reasonably happens to a person that makes them like that. For a comic context, someone like the Punisher might be a deconstruction of Batman, for example. The new Asuka is definitely not a deconstruction of the original Asuka. NGE Asuka, on the other hand, is usually considered at as a deconstruction of the fiery love interest archetype. She's fiery and aggressive because she's arrogant and eager to prove herself. She's arrogant and eager to prove herself is due to her childhood trauma of being abandoned by her mother. That's why the original Asuka is beloved, because she's not a love interest, she's portrayed like a person, her life don't revolve around Shinji.

Original Asuka is the best girl I have ever seen. In the original she is a prideful girl and has an amazing complex story to her. Shes important to the literal whole story from her giving hints to shinji to her confusing the heck out of him. I mean she even made him go rock bottom with the hospital scene. But in the rebuild shes just the same person but if you removed everything except her pride and gave her a literal opium overdose. I cant understand why they didnt just keep the same asuka or even better make the rebuilds a sequel to end of evangelion I would have loved that. But no they replaced her and gave her boy troubles as well like wtf in the original she wouldnt be all over shinji but giving subtle hints like the wall of jericho. But now they removed that and place “mmmm man ooga booga” if anno ever tries to do a relationship between these two he missed his chance 20 years ago. I would’ve been more satisfied with a mental prideful 14 year old girl going all over shinji instead of this doll we have today.

But looks like she just wanted a parental figure in her life since her mother was not there for her. So it’s a similar issue, but not as deep as it was in NGE. I think this was mainly done because the story of Rebuild is much more focused on Shinji and Rei than on the 3 of them together. Asuka is basically treated like a side character except for the fights. And that kinda gets proven by the revelation about the Shikanamis in 3.0+1.0. So, rebuild is way more Shinji focused, and the other 3/4 main characters (Misato, Rei, Asuka, and Kaworu) all take a side seat as they help him recover from his old and new trauma.

Asuka’s mother had the motherly part of her soul removed and inserted in Unit 02. Although this allowed her to survive, unlike Shinji’s mom, losing an important part of her soul ended up driving her insane, believing some doll was her real daughter, and that Asuka was some random girl she couldn’t recognize.
I have the same personality type as Shinji, but I also know what it's like to have a mother like Asuka's (vaguely similar). I believe the important role of the mother among many is to nurture self esteem in their children. My mother always needed to control me, she would put me down, abuse me by making me feel guilty or obligated to her. The fact that Asuka needs to perform the best to value herself is proof she doesn't actually have self esteem (unconditional value of oneself), so she needs to supplement that with self confidence (proven value of oneself). I know what that's like. I'm 31, and I still don't know how to hold on to self-esteem, especially when women judge me as not being good enough. If she could open up to Shinji, not judge him, and accept him along with herself, she'd be on her way to healing herself, but she's trapped herself from healing, because she chose to become bitter and hate him instead.
I love Shikinami, but Langely Soryhu will always be queen. More character and depth, and a consistent backstory. Yes she's a difficult, aggressive, stubborn, and a bitch at times, but it just makes her even more of an interesting character. She's a character that requires patience, and understanding.
I like the rebuild asuka as a person.. The problem with her though is she's already a well rounded character so there's little to develop... So she won't really be an interesting character that she could be...
Hmmm she seems a bit stand offish, my speculation is that she did suffer the same trauma, but reacted differently from soryu, instead of looking for love, she is looking to be a independent to prove something to herself, this maybe a response as to not trying to be hurt ever again from the trauma.
Saw the 4 movies already. To be fair, I wanna say this version of Asuka has the same issues as the other one, is just that is not as that bad the other one (Spoilers below.) This Asuka didn´t had to deal with her insane mother and see her die after struggling to qualify to be an Eva pilot(Imagine being a kid,making a big efford so that you parent gets to praise you, and then see them just yeet out of life in front you, a build up all for nothing), just an enviroment of competition and loliness where she watched from afar how other kids had connections with their parents, while she ended up having piloting the Eva as a way to fill this hole she had(Also, she had military training as an Air Force Pilot, so I guess that counts). So, had a rough childhood, but not a traumatic event that would haunt her. Also, this Asuka never got Mindraped so it counts too. It does help that in the time skip, she had enough time to process these internal issues so that they wouldn´t get the worst of her. It shows in the final movie in that, for all her "tought love", she did care about Shinji and understood that he shouldn´t just carry the burden of the Third Impact alone nor isolate in sadness for everything that happened.Hell, even before she opened a bit to Shinji and Misato, so she had to some level the capability to connect with others. Finally, she never stopped being an awesome Eva pilot. Remember that the Original Asuka started to go downhill when her Syncronization started to get worse, which in her eyes meant that, the only thing that made her special, it made her be worthy of existing and living as well of being recognized and wanted/loved was dissapearing. Here, Rebuild Asuka didn´t go through such issue. tl;dr Original Asuka was a terrible traumatized child who was putting a very strong front to cope with loss of her mother while trying to achieve love and connection with others in her twisted while bottling up her trauma. Rebuild Asuka is a mentally stronger teenager than Original Asuka due to her circunstances of her upbringing, but still craved for love and connection that were lacking in her childhood.
@@markon.2252 Anno decided to change Asuka's past entirely in the Rebuilt for no reason, so since the beginning she's a clone like Rei. Ayanami, Shikinami and Makinami are the naming they use for the clones. That's why Asuka's name changed from Soryuu to Shikanami. At the end it is also revealed that Mari's real name is Iscariote so she is not actually a clone.
now that the final movie is out, You would probably know that these 2 are actually 2 separate characters in 2 different time-line. But believe that their memory/soul come to one or that the final Asuka that came out is from the original series (note the costume difference differ from the Movie Asuka but same as the orginal)
I definitely prefer the original Asuka, including her dark origin stories re: her mother, although I also don't mind how the manga handled her either (hell I might even prefer that), as kind of (iirc) a bit of an in-between for the original and rebuild. I wasn't really a major fan of 'adult in child body' Asuka and how that whole aspect went down, nor the clone origin stuff.
Personally I feel like the new movie series has no where near the psychological depth the original has. It also isn’t nearly as existentially deep or mine fuck-y. It’s much more like a stereotypical anime, not even close to the genius masterpiece of the original. It’s not awful, not even super bad, just not nearly as metaphorical, well written and just not the masterpiece the original was.
Yes because it doesn’t need it we Know our characters already. It’s just a short rebuild not something fleshed out like the anime. So it’s giving us this time more of the fights instead of drama and character, reverse to the anime.

In the older version Asuka has more character development and more emotional with more tragic background story. The new version is a bit more blank and plain.

The rebuild series spends less time on character development because the creators assume you already have a hold of the identities of the characters. They have less time to express what they are trying to say with the movie series so they are making the most of their allotment. Y'might be overthinking it a bit. Another example of a classic remake doing this: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
The diference is clear, the first asuka is more hateble but with more backstory that makes her more understable, the rebuild asuka is almost same but with practically no past but with a slower and suttle disinvolvement that make her less hateful (differently than the first one that just grew when fighting for death in the end of evangelion) both are somewhat great in diferents aspects
The Rebuild Asuka just feels like a side character. it felt like Anno just wanted to get rid of her, but since he couldn't because of the fans, he changed everything about her. I'm glad in a way. The original Sohryu Asuka Langley's story comes to an end with the end of EOE, and what a glorious ending that was! This Rebuild Asuka is a fake Clone of the Shikinami series. Hence, all this fakeness, no character development, nothing relatable.
Asuka Shikinami in the Rebuilds is a copy of Asuka Soryuu from NGE just like Rei is a copy of Yui. Rebuild is a different reality of the same base line that NGE came from.
They gave her a reason for being full of herself in 3.0 + 1.0 and it's realllll dumb. Mostly because it was obviously just showhorned into the end of the movie. Original series + EoE Asuka will always be the best.
Only good thing about the Rebuild Asuka were her flashy Plugsuit designs; beyond that she didn’t have much character development along with Mari. I personally felt that the original Asuka had a better story to tell; in fact the Rebuild Asuka had more questions than answers especially at “Eva 4.0”.
I dont like Asuka in the rebuilds because she's incredibly unrealistic and feels alot more shallow To show what I mean let me compare a scene from the og and a scene from the rebuild that are similar in terms of getting across something. In the og series when Asuka first comes to the new school alot of boys are really attracted to her, this is shown in a short scene by how Asuka opens her locker and a pile of love letters fall out onto the floor. Asuka reaction? Stomps the letters. It's a great short scene that gets across Asukas character in a realistic way. How is getting across this handled in the rebuild? Well some poor guy walks up to Asuka in the class and asks her out or something like that, and she immediately kicks him in the face. Like wtf. That's not realistic at all, she literally just committed an assault in a very cartoonishly anime way. No where near as realistic and good as the og Also i hate her introduction in the rebuilds. In the og series, Asukas introduction was near perfect. It established her character, how she interacts with people such as Shinji, and how her complex and interesting mindset is on being a pilot. It also shows us that while she is skilled she is still young and needs help, aka shinji which foreshadows alot for later on. In the rebuilds she just drops into the sky while effortlessly destroying an angle, it's bland and forgettable and there's no depth whatsoever. Asuka in the rebuilds as a whole is bland and has no depth to her.
I suppose this does it for me. I won’t watch any of the stuff that released after End of Evangelion. I recently decided to see what the craze was all about for Evangelion, and I was instantly hooked. The original show is truly incredible, and I couldn’t see what more there was to say after the follow up movie. Sounds like a lot changes were made for whatever reasons. It’s good to let things end.
All indicates that the rebuild is kind of a continuation since a lot of the attitudes characters have are in direct contrast to their original selfs, some key flaws are missing, like they learned from what happened some how.
The problem with making new Asuka like old Asuka is the amount of effort it would all be just to do the same character study again and *maybe* do it marginally better. Sure, NGE the TV series 2.0 would have new technology and a better budget with the success of the original to back it up, but much of the charm of the original was in it's imperfections to begin with. As I get older, I understand that stories are very self-contained artistic entities with complex webs of inter-dependencies that cannot be easily quantified or improved on the way you can make sharp technical and game play improvements to something like other interactive media. (One reason why game sequels tend to surpass the original while movie sequels tend to do worse than the original.) All in all, it just makes sense to give a different take on the character. And on the bright side, for all of their depth, Shinji and Asuka really could be frustrating to watch after a while. -- But I also understand that this video makes the case that new Asuka is strange even without comparing her to the original. I haven't seen the movies yet (why are these things such a pain to get your hands on?) so I can't judge for myself.

I really hate the rebuilds. What I liked about Neon in the first place was the great characters and how it handled these characters. Asuka was my favorite because I saw her as the most like me and the most human. I hate the rebuilds because they prioritized action. And I understand they can't cram that much character stuff as opposed to 26 full tv episodes, but the rebuilds are fucking terrible. I watched them, and going into it I saw it as a hard reset and completely seperate. But anyways, the rebuilds throw my favorite part away, the characters, for some cool action. Sorry, but I really just can't deal with them and do not understand why people like them.
If you’re a new fan and have no connection to NGE prior, I think it’s easy to see how people like them. For me, having only watched the rebuilds, it’s enough. I get there’s a deeper metaphorical and psychological plot to the series than what the rebuilds offer. But it’s not entirely necessary. The same gist of these characters are conveyed enough in the rebuilds. Additionally, if this is Anno’s desired portrayal, then I’m perfectly fine taking this as a stand-alone.

@@No-ms3hj Had I seen the original prior, I’d agree as character driven narratives are what I really have grown to like most in storytelling as an adult. NGE came out when I was 5 and by the time I was into anime, Rebuilds 1 and 2 had already released, so naturally I gravitated toward the newer and flashier product. That said, I really love the idea of the rebuilds being some sort of “continuation” to the original with its subtle hints and phrases that it’s happened once before (mark on the moon, red seas, etc).

There's definitely nods to the original like you provided but they're ultimately very different. Stuff like Misato already knowing that lillith was in Central dogma and Asukas past not being at all developed or explored really do impact it a lot in ways I personally view as negative. I really dislike how they handled asuka too, she is basically a bitch and a recluse as opposed to how she was softer and outgoing in the original. I definitely would recommend the original if you haven't watched it but I get what you're saying.

Sorry Rebuilds fans but Asuka NGE was the most Asuka Asuka of all, and I wouldn't trade her for anything. It is very hard for me to see the Asuka Shikinami without it reaching my mind that it is just a copy, a variant of another reality of the Asuka that we know, to be lowered to a Clone like Reí, it takes away what Asuka was, and I refuse to believe that it is the same universe, this everything is so CHANGED, those very visible details make you notice that it is another universe (As Shinji said at the end of Chapter 26 of the Anime) 100 💯 Asuka NGE

I like the rebuild asuka as a person.. The problem with her though is she's already a well rounded character so there's little to develop... So she won't really be an interesting character that she could be...
Hmmm she seems a bit stand offish, my speculation is that she did suffer the same trauma, but reacted differently from soryu, instead of looking for love, she is looking to be a independent to prove something to herself, this maybe a response as to not trying to be hurt ever again from the trauma.

Saw the 4 movies already. To be fair, I wanna say this version of Asuka has the same issues as the other one, is just that is not as that bad the other one (Spoilers below.)
This Asuka didn´t had to deal with her insane mother and see her die after struggling to qualify to be an Eva pilot(Imagine being a kid,making a big efford so that you parent gets to praise you, and then see them just yeet out of life in front you, a build up all for nothing), just an enviroment of competition and loliness where she watched from afar how other kids had connections with their parents, while she ended up having piloting the Eva as a way to fill this hole she had(Also, she had military training as an Air Force Pilot, so I guess that counts). So, had a rough childhood, but not a traumatic event that would haunt her. Also, this Asuka never got Mindraped so it counts too.
It does help that in the time skip, she had enough time to process these internal issues so that they wouldn´t get the worst of her. It shows in the final movie in that, for all her "tought love", she did care about Shinji and understood that he shouldn´t just carry the burden of the Third Impact alone nor isolate in sadness for everything that happened.Hell, even before she opened a bit to Shinji and Misato, so she had to some level the capability to connect with others.
Finally, she never stopped being an awesome Eva pilot. Remember that the Original Asuka started to go downhill when her Syncronization started to get worse, which in her eyes meant that, the only thing that made her special, it made her be worthy of existing and living as well of being recognized and wanted/loved was dissapearing. Here, Rebuild Asuka didn´t go through such issue.
tl;dr Original Asuka was a terrible traumatized child who was putting a very strong front to cope with loss of her mother while trying to achieve love and connection with others in her twisted while bottling up her trauma. Rebuild Asuka is a mentally stronger teenager than Original Asuka due to her circunstances of her upbringing, but still craved for love and connection that were lacking in her childhood.
Basically, an Asuka with all the Asuka-like parts cut out. Definitely the mark of a clone. Anno was a genius changing her name to Shikinami.
I love how the Q trailer ends with: more fanservice comming soon.

@@markon.2252 Anno decided to change Asuka's past entirely in the Rebuilt for no reason, so since the beginning she's a clone like Rei. Ayanami, Shikinami and Makinami are the naming they use for the clones. That's why Asuka's name changed from Soryuu to Shikanami. At the end it is also revealed that Mari's real name is Iscariote so she is not actually a clone.
Rebuild Asuka and original have different names actually, original is Asuka Langley Soryu and rebuild one is Asuka Langley Shikinami

now that the final movie is out, You would probably know that these 2 are actually 2 separate characters in 2 different time-line. But believe that their memory/soul come to one or that the final Asuka that came out is from the original series (note the costume difference differ from the Movie Asuka but same as the orginal)
I definitely prefer the original Asuka, including her dark origin stories re: her mother, although I also don't mind how the manga handled her either (hell I might even prefer that), as kind of (iirc) a bit of an in-between for the original and rebuild. I wasn't really a major fan of 'adult in child body' Asuka and how that whole aspect went down, nor the clone origin stuff.

Personally I feel like the new movie series has no where near the psychological depth the original has. It also isn’t nearly as existentially deep or mine fuck-y. It’s much more like a stereotypical anime, not even close to the genius masterpiece of the original. It’s not awful, not even super bad, just not nearly as metaphorical, well written and just not the masterpiece the original was.
Yes because it doesn’t need it we Know our characters already. It’s just a short rebuild not something fleshed out like the anime. So it’s giving us this time more of the fights instead of drama and character, reverse to the anime.
I feel weird not watching the characters go through their character arc they had in the original, it was too good.
Thrice Upon a Time is far better than End of Evangelion tho.

In the older version Asuka has more character development and more emotional with more tragic background story. The new version is a bit more blank and plain.

Or... Maybe Asuka's abrupt characterization transition into a completely different person after the event is specifically written to be a trauma response? Trauma changes people in a big way.
The rebuild series spends less time on character development because the creators assume you already have a hold of the identities of the characters. They have less time to express what they are trying to say with the movie series so they are making the most of their allotment. Y'might be overthinking it a bit.
Another example of a classic remake doing this: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

The diference is clear, the first asuka is more hateble but with more backstory that makes her more understable, the rebuild asuka is almost same but with practically no past but with a slower and suttle disinvolvement that make her less hateful (differently than the first one that just grew when fighting for death in the end of evangelion)

I'm glad in a way. The original Sohryu Asuka Langley's story comes to an end with the end of EOE, and what a glorious ending that was!

Asuka Shikinami in the Rebuilds is a copy of Asuka Soryuu from NGE just like Rei is a copy of Yui. Rebuild is a different reality of the same base line that NGE came from.

I personally felt that the original Asuka had a better story to tell; in fact the Rebuild Asuka had more questions than answers especially at “Eva 4.0”.

To show what I mean let me compare a scene from the og and a scene from the rebuild that are similar in terms of getting across something.
In the og series when Asuka first comes to the new school alot of boys are really attracted to her, this is shown in a short scene by how Asuka opens her locker and a pile of love letters fall out onto the floor. Asuka reaction? Stomps the letters. It's a great short scene that gets across Asukas character in a realistic way.
How is getting across this handled in the rebuild? Well some poor guy walks up to Asuka in the class and asks her out or something like that, and she immediately kicks him in the face. Like wtf. That's not realistic at all, she literally just committed an assault in a very cartoonishly anime way. No where near as realistic and good as the og
Also i hate her introduction in the rebuilds. In the og series, Asukas introduction was near perfect. It established her character, how she interacts with people such as Shinji, and how her complex and interesting mindset is on being a pilot. It also shows us that while she is skilled she is still young and needs help, aka shinji which foreshadows alot for later on. In the rebuilds she just drops into the sky while effortlessly destroying an angle, it's bland and forgettable and there's no depth whatsoever.
Asuka in the rebuilds as a whole is bland and has no depth to her.
I suppose this does it for me. I won’t watch any of the stuff that released after End of Evangelion. I recently decided to see what the craze was all about for Evangelion, and I was instantly hooked. The original show is truly incredible, and I couldn’t see what more there was to say after the follow up movie. Sounds like a lot changes were made for whatever reasons. It’s good to let things end.
All indicates that the rebuild is kind of a continuation since a lot of the attitudes characters have are in direct contrast to their original selfs, some key flaws are missing, like they learned from what happened some how.

The problem with making new Asuka like old Asuka is the amount of effort it would all be just to do the same character study again and *maybe* do it marginally better.
Sure, NGE the TV series 2.0 would have new technology and a better budget with the success of the original to back it up, but much of the charm of the original was in it's imperfections to begin with.
As I get older, I understand that stories are very self-contained artistic entities with complex webs of inter-dependencies that cannot be easily quantified or improved on the way you can make sharp technical and game play improvements to something like other interactive media. (One reason why game sequels tend to surpass the original while movie sequels tend to do worse than the original.)
All in all, it just makes sense to give a different take on the character. And on the bright side, for all of their depth, Shinji and Asuka really could be frustrating to watch after a while.

the weird thing is rebuild asuke and NGE asuka are different. you can tell on there suit as the rebuild one has diamonds on the collar instead of squares, its shown at the end of Eva 3.0 +1.0

I really hate the rebuilds. What I liked about Neon in the first place was the great characters and how it handled these characters. Asuka was my favorite because I saw her as the most like me and the most human. I hate the rebuilds because they prioritized action. And I understand they can't cram that much character stuff as opposed to 26 full tv episodes, but the rebuilds are fucking terrible. I watched them, and going into it I saw it as a hard reset and completely seperate. But anyways, the rebuilds throw my favorite part away, the characters, for some cool action. Sorry, but I really just can't deal with them and do not understand why people like them.
If you’re a new fan and have no connection to NGE prior, I think it’s easy to see how people like them. For me, having only watched the rebuilds, it’s enough. I get there’s a deeper metaphorical and psychological plot to the series than what the rebuilds offer. But it’s not entirely necessary. The same gist of these characters are conveyed enough in the rebuilds. Additionally, if this is Anno’s desired portrayal, then I’m perfectly fine taking this as a stand-alone.
@@chase4773 well I fell in love with the original and then watched the rebuilds. I loved the character building and how thorough it was as well as the psychological elements of the show. I believed and still believe that those were the strong suits of the show.

@@No-ms3hj Had I seen the original prior, I’d agree as character driven narratives are what I really have grown to like most in storytelling as an adult. NGE came out when I was 5 and by the time I was into anime, Rebuilds 1 and 2 had already released, so naturally I gravitated toward the newer and flashier product. That said, I really love the idea of the rebuilds being some sort of “continuation” to the original with its subtle hints and phrases that it’s happened once before (mark on the moon, red seas, etc).
@@chase4773 I personally don't really see it as a continuation but as a seperate universe sort of thing. There's definitely nods to the original like you provided but they're ultimately very different. Stuff like Misato already knowing that lillith was in Central dogma and Asukas past not being at all developed or explored really do impact it a lot in ways I personally view as negative. I really dislike how they handled asuka too, she is basically a bitch and a recluse as opposed to how she was softer and outgoing in the original. I definitely would recommend the original if you haven't watched it but I get what you're saying.

Sorry Rebuilds fans but Asuka NGE was the most Asuka Asuka of all, and I wouldn't trade her for anything. It is very hard for me to see the Asuka Shikinami without it reaching my mind that it is just a copy, a variant of another reality of the Asuka that we know, to be lowered to a Clone like Reí, it takes away what Asuka was, and I refuse to believe that it is the same universe, this everything is so CHANGED, those very visible details make you notice that it is another universe (As Shinji said at the end of Chapter 26 of the Anime)
