- The fourth in a string of videos comparing the original and the rebuild of Evangelion. This one is comparing Rei, a fan favorite and another main character of the series.
The reason I'm doing many videos instead of one massive video is because I know I will have to edit some of these, Like I did with this one...
Thing is, Rei II (the one that blows herself up) has only a part of Lilith soul embeded in her so thats why shes so passive and apathetic. Rei 3 gets the whole soul because the Eva 00 which had the other half of the soul was destroyed so when they bring the 3rd clone, the soul goes completely in her. So this Rei, although a bit disoriented, wont obey Gendo as soon as his orders go against someone she cares about. Rebuild Rei is a whole differente character, probably because shes the 1st.
Manga Rei is also very different. She actually falls for Shinji despite having half a soul and the story leans heaviliy towards them getting together right until she dies.
Maybe it's better they left that part out of the anime, considering the whole genetic clone of his mom thing.

I like NGE Rei alot, but 3.0 + 1.0 really made me like Rebuild Rei more. Although I do really like 2.0 Rei too.

Tbh, I originally began to like Rei more in the rebuilds, but after 2.0, she's no longer around until the end of 3.0+1.0 (Rei Q doesn't count as she has a different soul). Rei then has to go through the same character arc again, where she dies again.
The og Rei actually gets the chance to stand up to and reject Gendo in EoE and reunites her soul with Lilith and becomes a symbol of hope for Shinji. That to me was a better character arc then what she had in the rebuilds.
I don't think they're really that different as far as the second Rei is concerned - it's just that what was scattered in tidbits between eps 11 and 23 is condensed so the arc is more visible. I do like how they elaborated on her feelings of trapped-ness however and that she sort of got to die happy, even if she still died.
That said the original series has a lot of her more philosophical moments and the very well executed death scene so I can't rely pick one. Her replacements however are very different. Rei III from the series is like an angry ghost; ReiQ from Rebuild is like a lost child.
I dont think anyone can disagree with the Rebuild Rei being far better than the NGE Rei.

Even in NGE, there were 3 kidna-separate Reis, which you see alluded to in the final episodes and EoE. There probably isn't too much more to add based on that, aside from that in EoE, after Rei III rejects Gendo, and he dies shortly after, Rei II is seen picking up his glasses again

But about Rei, is it safe to speculate that Rei's soul in Eva unit 01 merge with the new Rei's body on 3.0+1.0? Or, would it take over unit 01 coz aside from being trapped in there, remember it was struck by the lance unit 06 threw to prevent 3rd impact. Either it was Yui who took the hit or Rei. What ya think?
I'm sure new Rei will merge and start some crazy impact shenanigans, with Shinji in the middle of it all.
@@grubbymustard5466 one thing I love about either NGE or Rebuild, things are NEVER predictable.. I'm excited of what shit Rei and Shinji has in sleeve. And I can feel unit 01's comeback will be more than apeshit. Hahaha

@@darthvader5273 nope. Rei from 2.0 was consumed by Zeruel. Her soul was only extracted and was trapped in unit 01 all throughout 3.0.. the Rei in 3.0 is a clone. There are many Rei's/Vessels.. if a Rei dies, she can be replaced but not the memory. But I hope 3.0+1.0 gives justice and give the existing Rei a happy ending.

Agreed. Rei in the Rebuilds, Rei in ANIMA (light novel), Rei in anywhere but NGE really got light shown upon her. I mean, she pilots 09, 00, 0.0, 00 F-Type, and all that snazz but in NGE? Not really anything goes on with her.
Let's be real; rebuild Rei was contrived to cash in the moe trope.

I did manage to Cosplay as Rei black Plugsuit from "Eva 4.0" but I just felt like her demise was rather rushed. Even the long haired Rei in the 2.0 Plugsuit should have had a better explanation as to how that happened.
