Love this - I can never get over just how many people are out 'here', teaching, learning... It's great to discover artists all over. Great list and suggestions!
this is a treasure trove of urban sketching references. thanks so much for taking the time to put them together. i love watching your work. they are such an inspiration. i look forward to when you are out there travelling again.
Wow, this was completely brilliant. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for us. I've added this vid to my faves. You have definitely done your homework.
Great video, my only suggest would be to put the name of the person on the screen, especially since you can't always say them, like the Dutch artist's name. It will help us to look them up, but I heard at the end you said you have all this in an article on your website, so I hope to check that out later today. Thanks for sharing! Great video!
This was really informative and helpful! Now I know based on what I'd like to learn or improve I have a guide on which artists can help me. Thanks for the video!
Golden nuggets here! Saved this video because there is so much great information, and some new artists to me, that'll keep me busy for a fair while 👍 I was one of those who became overwhelmed with finding my mentors in the RUclips jungle... seriously couldn't see the woods for the trees. I'm interested in the courses, when I get back to work so I can justify the expense. Lapin (Sketching on accounting paper which I have stacks of in the attic!) and the Spanish lady are new to me... and who knew Gurney practiced plein air... I remember him from the Dinotopia telly series!! (Nostalgic now, ha). Will be delving into your recommendations. Thanks for sharing, Taria. I needed this video forever ago, lol.
Ah that’s awesome Wen - super happy this is useful stuff. Oh yeh as I said I could just watch James Gurneys painting videos all day, he is such an incredible artist and I love his vibe 🙏
@@tarias_sketchy_adventures I've not only fallen down Anne Laure's rabbit hole, I found a warren! I lived in Dijon for a while as a late teen, and love the French balanced attitude to life; so work, family & friends, leisure and sleep are equally important. I find I can't stop watching Anne's videos as she's so bubbly, crazy enthusiastic (in an infectious way) and talented (going to be making my own travel boards so I can use my preferred paper, after watching her create her own!) My Warren has new channels: Koosje Koene - subscribed after watching one video... enough said 😁. Gurney... Same 🤣 Liron, Alphonso and Teoh I subscribe to already. Though Teoh burns holes in my pockets with his book reviews and flip-throughs, lol. Your website is a fount of knowledge. Brilliant that all the info you share here is over there too, with extra stuff. I was whittling down my RUclips subscriptions successfully, until now. It truly is a rabbit hole 🤣 At least I'm subscribed to relevant channels now. Keep us updated on any other helpful channels or websites you come across. It's super helpful. ❤️
Yes, Tiara, those people are all well worth following. I have loved watching their videos - with the exception of the Spanish artist. I had not heard of her before. For sketching people I can recommend Hazel Soan, who has released a couple of books which are well worth the money. The first screen on your people section looked a lot like it came from one of her books called "Learn to Paint People Quickly". She is a(nother) great teacher but unfortunately, there is not a lot of free content from her online - as far as I know.
Ah yes I know of Hazel Soan but haven’t got her book... I think she is actually based here in South Africa and does workshops painting animals at game reserves!! Now that would be an amazing experience!
Outstanding! I am so thrilled to see some of your favorite painters are also yours: Liron, Gurney, Teoh, Marc T-H, Ian, etc. I also am thrilled to add new names per your recommendation. Thank you for this very useful tip.
About a week ago I stumbled upon a video of yours (1 house, 2 styles, okt 2020), and I fell in love with the loose style and the combination of black ink and watercolors. Before this video I never even heard of something like urban sketching. I'm used to drawing realistic portraits and I really would love to learn a more loose style of drawing. Just watching your video's already feels kind of liberating. ;-) So this week I ordered all the necessary tools and I'm ready to give it a go. :-) By the way, I'm Dutch, and the pronunciation of 'K-oo-sj-e' is: K - oo (like in dough) - sj (like in ship) - e (like in the, not thee) ;-)
Thank you for mentioning the Spanish language on Domestika. I bought a pack courses, which were not clearly notified that the voice over is in Spanish. I absolutely hated the experience because the subtitles hid half of the techniques shown in the video. So people should know that the vast majority of the courses there are in Spanish.
Yep it’s a Spanish platform. I didn’t have that troubles with the subtitles though.... sorry to hear that :/ there’s a few in English though - Lapins USK course is in English and so is Alex Hillkurtz course and a few others but yes mainly Spanish
Fantastic! This post is really helpful. Thank you very much. Do you know Joaquin Gonzalez Dorao? He also has some tutorials about perspective and travel sketch very useful.
Ah yeh I know his name - I think I have seen some of his RUclips vids, he mainly users markers right? If it’s the same guy I absolutely love his work. Great recommendation 🙏
How is it possible to understand Alicia Aradilla on Patreon and RUclips in English? I'd like to follow her but am concerned with the language barrier. Thank you.
Hi Linda, great question - all her videos have English subtitles and she writes her posts in both Spanish and English. So have no fear of joining her Patreon! 😊

Another excellent RUclipsr for loose sketching and splashy watercolor is Toby Urbansketch.

Thank you so much! There’s a great culture of sharing especially amongst artists - it’s lovely 😊🙏
Thanks Taria, that is SO useful. It is a bit overwhelming when you're setting out to know which artists and courses to look at.
I’m so glad this was useful! 😊🙏
Well said, @Lesley!
Nice job here. Generalizes the strengths of each artist. I took notes.
Great list of resources. Thank you
