      Agreed. If you want a shooter more feel to the game, full-auto is the way. Semi-Auto is more practical due to the wide range of non fully-auto and high damage.

    Why does the concept of a select fire switch not exist in Fallout anymore?
    Fallout 1 and 2 gave automatic weapons a semi-auto function and a burst function. Apparently, in the long years between games, both in universe and reality, such esoteric technology was forgotten. Useless Gun Runners.

    • @Karak971

      It's a conspiracy to have you buy multiple weapons from the vendors and to waste valuable inventory space so you have to sell them more merchandise they can resell at a higher price.

    • @nickdahl203
      @nickdahl203 7 лет назад +59

      But...I don't but my guns from vendors. Or sell them. I pick them off -the corpses of my victims- the bodies of Wastelanders that totally attacked me first. Then i scrap the ones I don't keep for aluminum and screws.

    • @nickdahl203
      @nickdahl203 7 лет назад +18

      I think the only mercs I've seen around Boston are the various guards who never leave their posts to go exploring, and the the people following the merchant caravans around. That and the Gunners, who would sooner rob the merchants than buy from them.
      Honestly, i think I'm one of the few people in the wastes without a steady job. Everybody else is a merchant, a guard, a farmer, some kind of medicine man, or a professional murderer.

    With the exception of 45-70 and 7.62, I have rarely ever bought ammo. I find plenty of ammo for my guns. In survival I generally have to leave ammo behind at a settlement because I have so much. I do agree about automatic weapons being sub-optimal in survival mode because of the amount you need to carry and how difficult it is to always go back for resupply of ammo.

    Another advantage for semi-auto rifles: Sniper perk rank 2
    Every semi-auto rifle with a scope attached to it (which includes the combat shotgun!!!) has a 30 percent chance to knock an enemy down when you hit them while aiming down sights. Very useful for crowd control, and if you're using the combat shotgun you should consider that this chance counts per projectile, not per shot. ;)

  • @nucleus691
    @nucleus691 7 лет назад +21

    your whole gunslinger stuff is kinda bs as gunslinger only requires one agility so everyone can get that perk and for commando you can just get the agility bobblehead or use the special book!
    You can also get a good situational weapon variety using rifleman with something like a shotgun with light weight mods for ghouls in vats and a heavy, hard hitting and accurate rifle, like the combat rifle, for mid to long range engagements and a dedicated sniper (preferably the Gauss Rifle) with a scope for long range only and maybe get a supressor for it and then get sneak attacks.
    Long story short:
    Semi = more bang for your buck and weight. Better against armour. Better at range.
    Auto = Better DPS but a lot of damage is wasted against the opponents armour.
    But automatic weapons are more fun to use at close range but sniping is also very nice!

  • @Vizhonary
    @Vizhonary 7 лет назад +66

    Uhm... I just don't get why you keep talking about the rifleman perk as if it locks you into your weapon type. ANYONE can get Gunslinger as it only takes an Agility of 1 and I tend to play a stealthy Gunslinger - Sniper cross that very much uses both Rifleman and Gunslinger perks in it's build. For the efficiency reasons, I never use commando.

    • @matthewbraswell3875
      @matthewbraswell3875 7 лет назад +7

      I mean its not like when your using Rifleman and Gunslinger you need high charisma for ammo and you would save perk points

    • @Vizhonary
      @Vizhonary 7 лет назад +2

      You don't need high charisma for ammo. 2 luck (all I usually get), it's first 2 perks, and the better merchant prices from the Charisma 1 perk can get you all the ammo you ever need. There is also the possibility of actually building a factory, if you have the right DLC. I tend to have a LOT more Charisma than 1, the way I play it, as Charm is what complements the combat abilities of my sniper-gunslinger build, but I don't really need it for ammo.

    Semi auto is superior and it isn't an opinion. Semi auto is universally applicable and only hindered by ones own individual trigger finger, accuracy and the guns individual ranges and accuracy. Oozing costs more and is really mostly applicable at close to mid range. Though it is possible to mitigate that a bit with burst fire.

    I think the simplest way to boil this down is to go over what the most arguably powerful, ammo-efficient, cost-efficient, the has the best range:damage per second:reload-time:damage per shot:upgrade/repair costs/requirements ratio, etc. weapon is in each damage category regardless of perks, mods, or skills(I say skills and repair mostly because this could also be applied to Fallout 3 and New Vegas logic).
    Note: these are just from my in-game experiences so I might be a little biased
    Best energy weapon in Fallout 3= The Alien Blaster or the Gauss Rifle (both semi-automatic weapons)
    Best F3 ballistic weapon= Lincoln's Repeater or The Backwater Rifle (again both semi-auto)
    FNV best energy weapon= YCS/186 or Pew-Pew (again both semi-auto)
    FNV best ballistic weapon= The Medicine Stick, The Ranger Sequoia, This Machine, or The Survivalist Rifle (I left out the Anti-mat rifle because under the right circumstances the Medicine Stick can deal just as much damage or even more at a lower strength requirement, versatility, and the chances to find and buy ammo at higher levels; also at the same time This Machine and The Survivalist Rifle are about tied but for different reasons, SR for it's damage speed and TM for it's common and cheaper ammo; again all semi weapons)
    Note: F4 was tougher to decide due to the variety of weapon-mods, legendary effects, and just the sheer amount of weapon combos)
    F4 best energy weapon= The Hub alien blaster, The Wazer Wifle, or the Aeternus (1/3 is purely semi-auto while 1 can be made automatic)
    F4 best ballistic weapon= Old Reliable or The Overseer's Guardian (1/2 is purely semi-auto while the other can be modded either way)
    TL:DR version: Most of the best or most efficient weapons in each Bethesda Fallout game have been purely semi-automatic (on a side note, I think it's stranger that most of them are lever-action rifles) weapons. Fallout 4 weapons were a little tougher to rate just because of how much weapons can be modded and altered to go with certain builds.

    • @Rednecgamer65
      @Rednecgamer65 7 лет назад +8

      One thing that the latest Bethesda games have put a lot of effort into is making the player feel badass. The reason I mentioned that is because I think that's why lever action rifles (and revolvers in the pistol category) are the most damaging guns in the games. If you're using a lever action rifle against enemies with machine guns and laser weapons and you're still kicking their asses it doesn't get much more badass than that.

    So, what I tend to do in survival mode for a sneak build is mix rifleman and gunslinger as hand guns are far better suited for close range stealth attacks where rifles are best used at greater ranges. So, I'll typically have the deliverer, the overseers guardian, and a .38 pipe pistol for weaker enemies.

  • @Handymancinema

    Automatics can use a wider range of prefixes because of the rpm, and since they shoot multiple bullets in vats so unless your semi does over 3x the damage of your auto then it's more damage efficient in vats so use autos.
    As far as chaining sneaks, both work but not with snipers. I've managed to hit 4 with the deliverer and most automatic guns. With semis I can hit 2 most of the time but it's not consistent enough to say I can hit 3. It's very reliant on the distance and on the recoil not going in the wrong way. And ofc it's impossible to do with the gauss rifle because you need to charge it.
    One thing in the video I found odd was the 10mm argument. In the early game you don't need the bonus damage on a pistol to make it work.
    Also, if you're aiming for late game and end storyline there's the option of using the two shot railway rifle, if that's on automatic you're going to have a lot of ammo available to you.

    I hope that if there is a Fallout 4 they make an effort to make firearms more realistic. Other than game balancing, there is no reason that per round damage should go down for full auto. That is just dumb. They should make the per round damage the same, but drastically increase the recoil of full auto weapons. Commando perk would then be used to mitigate recoil. The damage should be the same for both full and semi auto.

    Since I mostly use what ever ammo type I happen to scavenge around the wasteland. I tend to keep a wide variety of weapons of various types and calibers. I have literally never bought ammo from a vendor ever (unless it is cannon balls for the broadsider but that doesn't drop often). I usually will keep stockpile my ammo and weapons in a trunk at my main base until mission time then pick weapons depending on what ammo types I have the most of. That said I generally use the common ammo types for auto weapons and uncommon and rares for semi-auto. Personally I find Auto works better at close range while semi-auto is best used from a distance. Of course once I get a settlement with an ammo factory set up I just manufacture what ever ammo type I want and supply never becomes an issue ever again.

    Like most people said already. Semi Good at all ranges. Autos are fun. Only reason why i would wanna use autos is for role playing though.
    Other then that, i do not like auto, because of the lack of practicality. Feels like your limited to close range, sometimes mid if your got a slower firing, or recoil manageable gun.
    Like my current playthrough is roleplay, though its auto, i use melee 90% of the time, cause i need ammo against big baddies and legendarys. And im not enjoying it as much as i thought i would.
    Playing as Nate, the footsoldier. This turns it into a 'bonus' perk like Heavy weapons or Explosives, rather than a primary weapon option like melee or pistols.

    In survival mode or if using a mod that further bumps up damage, things (including the player) can die after a few hits. This makes the decision one of circumstance. Autos can be deadly in cqc because it's easier to pump out rounds faster, but, semis can one shot targets if you're sniping them.

  • @fireblast133
    @fireblast133 2 года назад

    honestly modding saves the day again, one i had some installed that make it so your damage with weapons is broken into pistol, rifle, heavy, and explosive, with few crossover weapons (mainly missiles and fatman). Doesn't matter if a gun is semi or auto, it gains the same benefits. Then add more options for ammo types across each weapon, and you get, for example, the old combat rifle becoming the assault rifle, and having access to 5mm, 5.56, or .308. While your damage is lower on the 5mm, each of those weighs about the same as a .38 in survival, and hit harder with armor piercing effects naturally. (mod also makes it so it does bonus damage to robots, vehicles, and power armor
    That being said, auto fire is still an inferior option, but it's very easy to level it out.
    oh, and it's weapons overhaul redux, equipment crafting overhaul, and be exceptional that I'm using to achieve this. Oh, and shotguns count as rifles, and it also allows some weapons to take a shotgun receiver, and survival adds capshot ammo for shotguns that are technically weightless, as they're intended as barter fodder (they'll replace bottlecaps found roughly 50% of the time with fortune finder for example)

  • @stevieb3432

    I roll around survival mode with automatics and have never once had to buy ammo. 3 ranks in the scrounger perk is more than enough. Even if you do have to buy ammo, just use the extra rounds of other ammo types that you don't use as currency. My main is overseers guardian fully upgraded with the deliverer as a sidearm. Both weapons use extremely common ammo types. You could also get the explosive radium rifle from far harbor. Im doing like 150 damage a bullet or more. It may not be as much as semi auto rifles can get but dps can be crazy. And if for some reason, you're still having trouble with ammo, make some at a settlement. The only time I ever ran out of ammo was using plasma weapons. But have a storage chest for extra ammo at each of your settlements and swap to a more common ammo type when necessary. Trust me, you'll be fine.

    Don't forget the two-shot effect for automatic weapons!
    Disadvantage: Increases recoil.
    Advantage: The second shot is unmodified by your attachments. Per-shot damage is reduced by automatic receivers, but the second shot is NOT reduced. So while gunslinger and rifleman do not get double damage on a two-shot modified weapon, automatic weapons actually get MORE than double damage.

    • @nucleus691

    • @manty5
      @manty5 7 лет назад

      It's not that the skill increases the damage of the second shot, it's that automatic receivers decrease the damage of the first shot, and since the second is immune to that decrease, you end up with more damage then the stats claim, because the stats assume that both shots are subject to the decrease.

  • @d029w7

    I have been playing survival mode for a few hundred hours now. Automatic weapons are very strong in the early game (below lv 40).
    Automatic weapons have lower recoil and hence higher effective DPS. If there is a dangerous enemy you want to take down, holding the automatic trigger down is much faster and safer than a non-automatic weapon. Lower recoil power allows me to target the enemy easier and hence kill the enemy faster. Commando perk is Agility 2 perk, you can spend a few points on it at the early stage of the game.
    I would recommend running automatic weapons with commando perk and a semi-auto weapon in the early game, and gradually shifting to the semi-auto weapons as you have more perks related to sneak perks.

    I used pistols on survival until about level 25 or so. By then, I was going up against such high-level enemies that my Advanced Plasma-Infused 10mm just couldn't cut it. While the .44 Pistol does impressive damage, it is much slower to fire than even the 10mm. This means that in close-range engagements where you really need that high dps, you are better off with the 10mm anyway. And in long-range engagements where you rely primarily on Sneak Bonus Damage, the .44 is useless as it cannot be suppressed, so not only will you be noticed much more easily, you don't have access to the additional x.5 from the Sandman Perk.
    If you have the Far Harbor DLC, go with a fully-upgraded Radium Rifle which has a high rate of fire low recoil and uses .45 ammo. Mine can do 175-ish Ballistic Damage and 100 Radiation Damage. With the Instigator Legendary I do double that on the first shot, which is extremely useful if you use sneak damage to take down most of your foes.

    One disadvantage with semi is the more pronounced recoil, leading to less hits (damage) per second when two hits aren't enough.
    The "feature" of full auto doing less damage per hit is very unrealistic and "gamey".
    A realistic approach for auto would be to use damage and recoil from semi and just increase the ammo consumption. The reason for using auto is to increase the probability of scoring any hit with a burst rather than scoring several hits.
    Also, what automatic weapon in the game can use .50 ammo?

    Your first point about commando being in the same skill tree with gunslinger doesn't really mean anything imo since you only need 2 perception to get rifleman
    Also you dont need to worry about ammo price from about level 15 onwards for balistic ammo types and level 25-30 for all other ammo types
    Build an ammo forge and get all of your caliber based ammo exclusively from there and also build a weapons forge and only build 44 revolvers (or 10mm pistols if you dont have your gun nut perk high enough yet).
    Now every time you need to buy non ballistic ammo, take all your crafted pistols/revolvers and your least used ammo type from the ammo forge, put on your best CHR apparel and buy all the non ballistic ammo you can afford from vendors in return for your pistols/revolvers and least used ammo type
    You'll even make a caps profit every time you do this
