The Flamer could be anywhere from full on light the room, down to precision cutting/welding torch, to lighting birthday candles. On the other hand (ha), the laser would be capable of anything from precision bug zapping, to full combat laser and anything in between, including use for precision tree/hedge trimming, and maintenance tasks. Id like to add that full sentry bots are ideal for settlement defence, they dont need to travel long distances, are literal bricks of armor and guns, and when they overheat other settlement defences can give them cover untill they resume their rampage, and if you get fed up with them getting stuck, swapping the sentry legs for robobrain tracks tends to solve most pathing issues. Also dont sleep on thier melee abilites, sure they dont hit as hard as an assultron, but its still very hard with a proper melee weapon and thier sheer bulk means they can even go toe to toe with the likes of yaio gui.
Also, if your someone who has access to power armor or other means of carrying large loads yourself, a pure assaultron is an excellent protector to have by your side when outfitted with melee weapons and the head laser, them running into melee tends to keep a lot of the heat off your back, so they are even better suited for those who prefer ranged combat. Also, about that head laser, dont worry about the assaultron's bad sensors making it miss, it wont, it appears the laser module comes with its own set of targeting sensors which are second to none, but due to being directly integrated into the head laser they cannot link with any other ranged weapons.

I use robo-tracked provisioners with " lasers " and increased armor, but I also use a mod that changes pack brahmin to eye-bots. I mainly use the robo-provisioners to make runs through highly dangerous areas, and high population areas, so I don't mistakenly shoot my human provisioners in low light conditions, in the fog-of-war, sometimes PID isn't possible due to the target rich environments. I've only killed three provisioners in the heat of battle, which is a pretty good average considering the many hours played. After Jezebel's essential part is over, and I can send it somewhere, I reconfigure it with defense capability in mind and have it pull security at Grey Garden. I up-armor and up-weapon ADA as my primary security patrol at Red Rocket along with Dogmeat, and successfully keep all attackers off of the property, many never even reach the road much less cross it. no walls needed. I've been toying with the idea of making all my human provisioners robot provisioners this play through, but I don't know how much that will ultimately tank the Happiness level, especially since my supply hub is Starlight Drive-In a major population area. I think I'd have to move the supply hub aspect from Starlight to Grey Garden and the Mechanists Lair to keep the Happiness hit minimal. I just hate the Mechanists Lair as a location because getting in and out of there is a pain, so I'd have to do some serious pen and paper planning to make it a one-trip-and-done mission.

A fully-voltaic armored Mr. Handy with two Sentrybot arms capped off with dual gatling lasers, along with three Mr. Handy arms wielding saws, is the closest thing to perfection you can get in this game. Fast, agile, tanky, godly dps. Can go anywhere, kill anything, and shrug off aggressive Deathclaws like they're level 1 Radroaches. The only downside is it'll frequently kill everything hostile before you get a chance to finish aiming down sights, making combat a little too easy. The voltaic armor increases the damage of energy weapons, and you can fit a LOT of voltaic armor on this thing. Don't forget to armor the thruster. Turn Codsworth into Godsworth, because this thing'll smite groups of high-level enemies faster than an angel of death. I can fathom no downsides to relying solely on these, and no upsides to ever choosing anything else.

A surprisingly good combo for a robot companion is to use protectron arms and torso with robobrain tracks, this gives enough carrying capacity and health to be helpful in pretty much every situation. For the head and weapons it depends on the combination, as automatic weapons work best with sentry heads, so it doesn't try to spry things at sniper distances, while the robobrain head works best with single shot weapons, so it misses a lot less.
Personally I always recommend weapons that allow armor on the hands, so you can have a bit extra armor and carrying capacity, but that's just personal preference.

Melts through deathclaws and behemoths like a hot knife through butter, and something about that configuration pretty much completely stops it being staggered.

I make really cheap provisioners, mainly because I avoid using human ones, but get/connect all the settlements. Build a basic unit, slap on a Mr. Handy thruster, add the cheapest ranged weapon on one arm, paint them a color noticeable from a distance (usually white or pink), and send them on their way!

I pretty much exclusively use automatons as provisioned. And if you have enough settlements it's really easy to stumble across a hulking sentry bot provisioner as you wander around sometimes the red light and gunfire in the distance scares you too

Last time I did a playthrough, all of my settlements were connected via sentry provisioners, and I built them to be heavily armed much like you did, with heavy weapons and armor but good carrying capacity. They, along with the rebuilt Minutemen patrols, basically constituted a patrolling peacekeeping force throughout the Commonwealth, and I often heard them taking out entire encampments of raiders/gunners/etc in the distance

The final Mr. Handy is close to your best option for companion work - stack two gatling lasers on it and use the armor that boost energy damage and you are good to go for the fastest, hardest hitting option that can follow you around without hanging up on everything. You could just use those and nothing else (though they are pricy to build just to have as provisioners, but they will clean up the commonwealth for a survival playthrough where you want clean roads to run on).
For provisioners, you can just use basic unmods as they don't HAVE to be anything special. If you are going to make them damage dealers, then the system he has works well enough - but consider cheaper, shorter range arm options like cyro and flamer. Those have pretty awesome damage potential when on a companion. The face blaster works well as a longer range option so you can afford the shorter range for the arms (and they seem to shorten up the agro range as well).
I've seen assaultron melee builds that COULD pile on the damage in an encounter, but the reality is that what you are working against the most is the game's pathfinding. Having legs instead of thrusters and no range means that you will never have an effective build that is melee because getting to the enemies will be thwarted. You want a floating gunship if you want that companion to be worth having around you.

[X] Constructing a robot to provide support fire.
[✓] Constructing a robot to carry all the purified water I use to fund my ammo and fusion core needs.
I usually opt for 2 configurations.
Like yourself, I too settled on a Mr. Handy type configuration with 2 eyes swapped for fire support. I opted for Gatling Lasers. The armor I used was anything that increased energy damage. If I'm dungeon diving, this is my robot of choice. Usually Codsworth is configured this way.
My other robot is a Sentry bot mule optimized purely for carry capacity. I still mount a Minigun and Gatling Laser with 2 shoulder mounted Fatman mortars. Since the mortars can malfunction, the arm weapons are standard type for reliability. I only use this for buying and selling, but if anything does decided to attack me. It doesn't for very long.

Fun fact about assaultron head laser: despite the overall horrendous accuracy of the assaultron head, the laser SPECIFICALLY seems to have a pinpoint accuracy as long as the targets are within assaultron's cone of vision when it's body locks in. It can even switch between targets during a single blast, killing multiple targets if their health is low enough.

For my companion and settlement protection bots, I normally go for the Robobrain head for the mesmatron attack, Sentry body for high hp and the 2 shoulder grenade launchers, Sentry arms for high hp again, Gatling laser and rocket launcher for arms and the Assultron legs for movespeed, they are both faster and provides more carry capacity than the mr. handy thruster. Then the Target system, so it can detect all nearby enemies and depending on my own carry capacity, I go either voltage for the extra carry or otherwise hydraulic armor for best protection (And sometimes bleeding dmg for the shoulder armor). It is an absolute fast moving killing machine, it looks wild and also have decent carry capacity and one of the best combat companions you can have.
But it is very costly in materials, especially aluminum, gold and nuclear material.

My current game has robot provisioner hubs radiating outwards from GreyGarden, The Mechanists Lair, and Hangman's alley. I find it very satisfying hearing my heavy provisioner death machines laying waste to raiders, and super mutants living around Hangman's. I always got annoyed that my settlers would take a stroll around the block, and aggro the locals. Now I just park a robot workbench near the open entrance so even fat-assed sentry bot parts can path in and out. Having those three areas spewing out robot, splits up the map pretty good, and focuses the happiness hit to only those places. I also had a ton of parts from the stupid amount of Rust Devil spawns that crop up while exploring. I do think that having a hovering robot provisioner floating over to Spectacle Island does make sense vs a loaded up brahmin.

Robobrain tracks, Mr Handy torso + center eye for long range and accuracy, one side mounted gatling lazer (or other lazer weapons as available). The Robotank.
Extremely fast, hard hitting, spots and engages targets at long range. Perfect for -provisioning- _pacifying_ the Commonwealth. At one point had 50+ criss-crossing the map, nothing hostile stood a chance. Just constant fights going off in the distance, running across bodies or seeing them flying up and down roads. Don't forget to recruit as a companion to flag them as protected.

I know for my robots I usually build them according to 3 types. Workers, fighters, and travelers.
Workers are either basic protectron or Mr handy bots with little to no armor or upgrades. They are designed to be a workhorse, and a workhorse only.
Fighters are either asultrons or securitrons built around crowd control with little to no care for carry capacity or mobility. They are built for defending bases and attacking anything that might pose a threat to a settlement.
Travelers are a hodgepodge of assaltrons, robo brains, and Mr handys that are equally a hodgepodge of range, capacity, and damage while all having mobility be its key necessity. They are built to be companions and provisioners with a focus again a being able to go anywhere.

I personally have had the best experience with assaultrons. Adding robo brain torso boosts health and carry capacity making for a deadly ally who rushes enemies in melee range with the assaultron head laser being more than capable of handling ranged opponents. For armor and weapons I like to do for duel shish kabobs with the volteic armor for lots of energy damage. However, a warmonger armor plus the the sledge hammer saw blades works wonders as well.

my go to unit is assaultrons with blades, a handy thruster, and a robobrain head, the speed and engagement range make this combo pretty scary as long as it doesn't get surrounded, but it's hard to surround something that has its blades wet before your opponents know what happened, install these as provisioners and yeah, they'll get distracted by every threat along the way, but if they run the longest routes possible you can pretty effectively rely on them to keep the commonwealth clean

the most versatile one is handy torso, assaultron legs (handy thruster will do fine, low carry cap is still more than enough though if you really want that robobrain, again you just want any set of quick legs), double minigguns (one laser preffered to get around phys resist enemies), long range will allow massive suppresive fire and the range means armor is not important, and then go for all pocketed armor, with maybe some rust devil here and there, its great in a fight and will melt any enemy, (mine melts alpha deathclaws in seconds), it has more than enough speed and maneuverability for any purpose, and carry cap is liek 200 which is as much as if not more than the average person/follower

It's been a bit but I think my standard supply line bot was tracked, tesla coil/hydraulic armor, rail spike gun x2 or 1 Tesla and 1 rail spike gun, robobrain body, sentry arms, and a Mr. Handy eye.
The reasons were the melee combo of Tesla with sentry arms, I found that the robobrain head would sometimes forsake attacking with other weapons and keep trying to eye gouge (my nickname) attack over and over leading to defeat. The rail spikes seem to behave like 50 cal sniper rifles with a handy eye and having a Tesla was pure fun watching them charge the bot and my personal Raiden perform fatalities.
My personal bot was much the same unless I wanted perfect mobility then, like you went with the thruster because everything else can get into annoying terrain issues.

My best combo that I'm happy with is the assaultron legs, robobrain torso and head, sentry arms and both, minigun and gatling lazer.
For armor, I went with voltaic armor all around.
It provides the very best ranged offense and surprisingly good defense.
The assaultron legs grant it decent speed to keep up with you, while still granting decent carry capacity.
The 2 heavy guns means low chance of being melee'd. And the mesme-something head disorients pretty much anyone. Opponents getting up close and personal winds up being your problem, but that's assuming they survive the onslaught of fire from the bot.
Voice is your choice. Tho the robotic female voice with personality on, is my go to.

I prefer what I consider the "sentry robobrain"
Sentry bot torso and arms, giving it the heavy cluster munitions and high carrying capacity, fitted with an unstable gatling laser and missile launcher.
Using a robobrain mesmetron head it has an extremely long engagement distance and has the mesmetron as an extra weapon.
The disadvantage of the sentry bot legs is difficulty in close quarters but this is almost entirely eliminated with the robobrain treads, with a mere slight drop in carry capacity and health.
What this lacks in melee capacity it more than makes up for in extreme levels of power. Slapping strong post-war armour with extra carry capacity on it and it's one of the most versatile robots I've ever made.

one of the most unexpectedly powerful builds I did was just a protectron with full factory setup but automatic laser protectron hands on both arms. it was funny that it could catch up to me by waddling at hyper speed and it would completely coat any targets it saw with lasers from head to toe with hundreds of shots in seconds typically instakilling anything that wasn't a boss or legendary enemy type.
