I finally got round to making a 1/4 inch stereo to four pole balanced adaptor today using the microphone cable and the tips I learnt from your videos Jason. It works perfectly thank you. :-)
I turned my dt990 pro’s into the ultimate wireless gaming headset with a wireless mod mic, ifi go blu and creative bt-w3. This allows for aptx low latency and full bandwidth mic audio. I used your guide for the internal modifications.
Was looking at repairing my dt770 cable and happened upon your guides and website, good stuff man, you ahve a new subscriber. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
thank you for the informative videos. speaking of gaming and audio this could be interesting to you, i bought a "yeti x" microphone and with these settings i can speak well into it while gaming over normal stereo speakers at normal volume - the mic doesn't pick them up well so they stay under the teamspeak speaking threshold: cardioid, input gain 2 (nearly all the way down), limiter 20db (all the way up), gate -40db (the middle). the greatest trick is the "gate" software filter - put to the right point it'll totally leave my voice alone but basically "deletes" ambient noise out of the signal - it's magic.
Thanks for this video! Make the mod exceedingly simple on this headset! Also did a pair of Audi Technica AD-700X which was a bit of a nightmare. The housing and wires were incredibly difficult to work with!
@@CustomCans I'm looking at getting a 3.5 mm socket from e bay that comes with a little nut so you can tighten the socket to the headphones cup. Would you say that your system (making a slightly smaller hole, then force threading in the socket + hot glue) is better vs making the hole exact size for threaded part of socket to go in comfortably, then using supplied nut to tighten and hold socket firmly in place (+ also a little bit of hot glue to stop nut from coming lose later)? Which will be sturdier? Thx!
Thanks for the awesome videos. I tried following this and ran into a few issues. At one point, I had this working correctly, but my solder wasn't holding on the jack, so I tried to resolder everything. After running into multiple solder issues at that point, I pretty much rewired the whole thing using better wire -- sort of following your complete re-wire video. Despite taking pictures and being pretty confident on the positions (and solders), my issue is no matter what I do, I'm not getting sound to the right-side can. I have a new version of these, so the wiring looked like yours, and I was seeing the kevlar, etc. I didn't touch those back two solder points, which you mentioned is a nightmare if they get buggered. Using a meter on the left can to right can, I am getting readings. I tried everything as far as switching the wires around coming off the jack (except the black ground -- I had that on the end position where it is connected to the other). Is it more likely I fried something on the bored, or a wiring issue? The boards are not sold separately and run about ~$60 each, so I'm hesitant to try again with new drivers. Thanks again for the cool videos!
If you have a multimeter - I would test the driver directly - put the probes on the outer pads of the driver and you should get a reading close to 250ohms ( If you have the 250 ohm version ) If you are getting a reading then the driver is OK and it is a wiring issue. If you get a super low resistance then you have a short somewhere and if you don't get any reading then you may have broken one of the voice coil wires. That may be fixable. Those two little solder joints at the back which I told you not to touch have super thin wires attached - if one is snapped then you may be able to solder it back on depending on where it snapped
quite funny, i did this just this week to my dt 770 Pros, cause i wanted to hook em up to the very same mic as well and an other short cable for on the go with my FiiO BTR5 ^_^
Could I get these but with a mini XLR balanced output on the opposite can? (And cable with 4.4mm balanced pentacon?) Would cover all possible uses and connection types then. Cheers! I've just bought the uber dt990's. Look forward to using them. Ill just get a clip on mic instead.
It is not impossible but you would need to have a switch to switch them from balanced to single ended.... it is probably not worth the hassle. We could potentially use a 4 pole 3.5mm socket in the earcup, that would allow you to use the mic single ended and then you would also plug in a balanced cable into the same socket
Here you go sir, 1 Like. Thinking of making an order for the HD600 copper kit you sell, already got the 650 cable so think with the kit it’s finished modified. So Im wondering if there are any mods for the 770 pro that you sell for better bass?
Mass Loading & Damping would be best for the 770 for better bass, I did it on mine using this video - ruclips.net/video/I6zj02bz8f4/видео.html . The parts are available on the Custom Cans Site under "Modding".
Hello, found this on your website, I have a couple of questions if that’s okay for you to respond to? Would this on your website ‘Custom Cans DT990 Modified Gaming Headphones with Microphone and Detachable Cable (3.5mm / 6.35mm TRS jack)’ plug straight into an Xbox Series X / PS5 controller? Then also, I’m guessing you still require an amp with these, then how does that work when wanting to use these for gaming? Wondering how the setup all works, does the amp plug into the console?
It depends how loud you listen. The 250ohm version will work if you plug it straight into the controller but it will not go very loud. An amp is probably not easy to set up as most of them don't have a pass through for the mic so the mic would not work with out pluging in a load of adapters. If you email us we could make a 32ohm version which would be much easier to drive off the playstation / xbox
@@CustomCans so with the headphones from you, do I get both the headphone jack and microphone jack coming from the headset? So I can plug both 3.5mm headphone and 3.5mm microphone into that amp/dac?
@@CustomCans I’m just worried that if I purchase the custom headset with the mic from you guys, and the setup doesn’t work then I probably won’t be able to return the headset.
We have made a couple of balanced pairs with a mic but with a fixed cable. Unfortunately, I don't think we have a video of it. It is a ball ache of a job so not something we want to encourage ;)
I bought a pair of DT 900 Pro X's to upgrade from my DT 990 250 ohms and I've noticed that the 900's are a bit cleaner with a tiny bit of better imaging but was wondering if I did the 990 balanced mod if it would rid the small amount static I'm hearing? I'm using them with the BTR7 Portable DAC/AMP.
Maybe... the BTR7 will be able to drive them a little easier but if you have a hiss or static sound it will be a problem with the BTR7 and the 990 tends to show up those kind of issues more due to the treble peak. I would have a hunt around online to see if anyone is having the same issue, it may have a slight fault
Does anyone know if there is Bluetooth adapter that connects directly to this 3.5mm jack port? I found some for Bose QC25, Beats studio... but position/size/pins... of jack connector is too specific for certain brand of headphones.
Quick question, I have done this mod and its amazing other than when I press slightly down on the mic when in front of my mouth it cuts out/distorts the audio. The jack is in there pretty snug so all I can imagine it is the connection between the connector and the mic when pressure is applied. Have you happen to come across something like that before?
It is very tricky to diagnose without them in front of me but ... you may have overheated the pins ont he socket when soldering them - that could have caused the plastic holding them in place to melt / warp slightly so they are not giving a solid connection
