    Directed here from a shout in DankPods' latest video. He mentioned how he got a detachable cable for his DT770s, and I thought, "sick, I've been needing a pair of new closed-backs since my ATH-M40Xs died, but I would want a detachable cable or some form of bluetooth functionality, too." Then I look you up and find that you're selling this! Much love, man.

    Don't know if "deserve" is the word, but I'd love to get one, so I eventually only have to buy one later when I convert my 990's. I have a set of 770's and 990's that I swap between depending on if I want open back or not. Whether I get one for free or not, I'm probably going to use your kit to mod both. The non-detachable cable is literally the only thing I don't like about my DT's.
    That aside, I found your channel through headphones and then browsed through your stuff and found the video where you refurb your Rok coffee maker and I had to sub. Coffee and music are just about the only two things I really allow myself to kind of "hipster" out about. I really enjoy this channel. Keep up the cool stuff man!

    I know this video was posted like a year ago but i had a question and maybe you still read the comments 🤷. I have an amp with a balanced output and i went down an internet rabit hole to find out how to go about using it. This ultimatly led me to your video. The question is, can you short the two ground pins like you do in this video and plug it into a balanced amp without damaging the amp. My understanding is that the balanced cable carries two positive and two grounds. In the video you connected both of the ground pins to a common ground wire. Later you stated that you could swap in an XLR cable to plug in to your balanced amp. Does this not create a short? Just trying to get clarification.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  8 месяцев назад +1

      No - if you were to use them with a balanced amp you would need to fit them with a 4 pin socket and make a 4 wire cable without the negative wires joined

  • @JohnnyWishbone85
    @JohnnyWishbone85 6 месяцев назад +2

    So, what's not clear to me is whether you MUST use a balanced cable/connection with this mod.
    Or can you also use the TRS cable you guys sell with a non-balanced source? This question is literally the only thing stopping me from placing an order. Thanks!

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  6 месяцев назад

      No, once they are modded you can use them balanced or single ended - you just need 2 different cables or a balanced cable and an adapter. When we sell them we supply the balanced cable and convert the stock cable so it can still be used with normal 3.5 and 6.3mm jack equipment

    i did this mod to my 770s to replace the headphone jack mod i had earlier, unfortunately the hole i had drilled for the headphone jack was a bit off from where the hole has to be for the xlr connector so mine is loose but after i glued it in place it hasn't budged so far, if i have problems with it in the future though i will replace that ear cup, i also found that i didn't need to cut the center ring at all in either mod as there was no interference and everything fit perfectly already

He mentioned adding bass, but I've never felt like these really needed more bass, but then I wondered if adding the stickie bits maybe helped smooth things out by absorbing certain sound waves. I’ve got the DT770 32 & 80 ohms, which would you recommend doing the dampening mod on?

      It works well on the 80 and 250 versions - we have not tested it fully on the 32 ohm ones but it should have a similar effect - but you will probably have to use the port adapters to bring the bass in line as the 32 might get a little bass heavy

    Thanks. Good video, clear, informative and evident that you are an accomplished modder. I have seen many YT 'hackers' make a bodge job of mods. Myself, I love making and modding kit for various projects, so have subscribed. Was thinking of buying some Sony MDR 7506 cans for field recording work, and modding a detachable cable. Most seem use a 3.5mm socket on input end but I had wondered if a mini XLR might be better if it fits. Yet to buy parts so don't know what is best yet. Any views?
    I do like the way with this that you have thought about the frequency response and introduced weights, damping pads etc to adjust base response. Was this done on a hunch or have you done scientific tests to validate and quantify the relative impact of the incremental changes? I must look into these BD cans too, are they best for mixing or just overall end consumption of content in your best view? They look a bit too bulky IMO for field monitoring, so I'm drawn to the Sony 7506 cans for that role.

    Hello. I made an MMCX mod for my DT770. It seemed to me that mini XLR is too bulky. So, the MMCX is small enough, clamps tightly, and I can buy different SE or BAL cables on Aliexpress. MMCX connectors and cables from Aliexpress may be gentle, but no worries now. All looks good. Also the 4-wire connection improved the soundstage, which I would definitely recommend. I can give additional info if somebody interested. Or separate video on Custom Cans ma be useful. Cheers.

    • @CustomCans

I was wondering if I could connect my headphones to the XLR line level outputs of a preamp without damaging anything. In this case, I will simply modify my headphones to connect each speaker to a 3-pin XLR male connector : XLR output > XLR connector > headphone driver. Not sure it qualifies as deserving, but DT770's are my first foray in to "decent" headphones, coming from the wasteland of "gaming" headsets they've been a massive revelation (and I have no excuse, my dad was a proper audiophile so I should know better). Been watching your vids and procrastinating about modding them (mainly because I want a blingy colourful cable)... so yea, if you sent me a mod kit I'd have no excuse but to get it done then come back to you to buy some fancy cables (yes, plural... right now my 770's never leave the PC as the jack is out of easy reach... if I could easily disconnect the cable I'd be able to use them for TV viewing as well (and consign the Astro headset to the dusty tech graveyard drawer once and for all).

      I have never been a very good gamer but I used to be a hardcore overclocker using cascade phase change coolers to get the CPU to -57C under load. Then when I realised I was spending nearly half my yearly wage on destroying computer components I decided to start playing with audio equipment - Which it turns out is just as bad ;)

    I deserve those DT770's because I just broke mine trying to make the mod. 😂 Too shaky hands for soldering it seems, and the white "paper" covering the speaker unit inside the cup that goes towards the ear got also punctured because I have such clumsy hands.

    Any mods on the DT770 Pro?

  • @flammehawk
    @flammehawk 2 года назад

    Greetings,
    First of all, thank you for this video. I'm actually thinking of doing this mod for my DT 770 Pros 80 Ohm.
    But since I would prefer to have a Shorter Cable with it, I was wondering what type of wire or litz you would recommend for a DIY sleeved braided wire, one balanced, one unbalanced, and one for the headband.
    If it changes anything, I'm from Germany.
    With kind Regards
    flammehawk

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 года назад

      If you want to make a braided wire then any decent copper or silver plated copper wire should be fine as long as you don't get it too thick. Replacing the headband cable does not make a huge difference but you might as well change it if you are making custom cables any way. Sorry I can't recommend anything specifically as we get wire made to order for us to our own spec but any wire you like the look of where the core is under 1mm - any fatter than that and you will have trouble soldering it to the connectors
