Ok, I got a question for you. I just got the mass loading and dampening kit in the mail today and did it, but now my left audio isn't working. Was working fine prior to that and the solder joints still look solid. Right channel works perfectly fine though. Any idea where I went wrong? I also got the detachable cable conversion but I don't have the time to get my soldering iron set up until the weekend, so I'll be able to test that then, but until then I'm at a loss on what happened.
It is very tricky to tell without testing everything with a multimeter. Hopefully you have broken a wire or maybe a strand of wire has come loose and causing a short. Worst case scenario, you have broken a voice coil wire, that can be pretty fatal. Are they the newer ones with the wires soldered to a little PCB or the older style with wires soldered to metal stakes?
@@CustomCans newer style with the PCB. I'm not 100% sure, but I think what happened was actually an issue with the iPod I was using to test the audio. Headphone jack broke free of its mount and I had to hot glue it to keep it in place (though I thought I tried them with something else to the same effect) but they're working again now! Sorry for the late reply, I never saw a notification from YT that I got a reply
The weight is added to the driver enclosure . Essentially it gives a bit more mass for the diaphragm to push against. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, so as the diaphragm is moved in an out, the enclosure tries to move and flex the baffle. Adding more weight in the right places means that the enclosure is harder to move so more of the energy goes into making sound, especially in the sub bass region where the diaphragm has to move a lot. So... the mass loading helps the driver recreate the very low frequencies more accurately with less harmonic distortion.

@@CustomCans love your work. Have you done anything with the Custom Game? I would love to find some Mods even backplates, upgraded wire harness, maybe some color, another option for backplate material 🤔 that isn't cardboard. Maybe a more open option for outdoor use. I did buy 990 Ear cups the velour those have helped outdoor use.
It stops the back of the driver moving as much so more of the energy goes into moving the diaphragm. It gives more detailed bass and a little more bass extension
A normal soldering iron should do the trick but practice on other things first - I have seen some nasty solder jobs people have done on these as they had not got the hang of soldering before trying to mod them. The effect on the sound will all depend on what mods you do - if you just make the cable detachable then not a lot will change
I have the 990 pros but I hate how long the cable is. I just want a detachable one but I don't know what to choose. Should I choose a 4 pin mini xlr in the headphone plug and have a 6.5mm cable to plug into my audio interface. Or just have a 3.5mm conversion?
If you have or are likely to get a balanced headphone amp then go with the 4 pin, if not then I would go with a 3.5mm conversion as there are more cables available and you can also plug in boom mics and stuff
You already have the cable dangling off the left side so you probably would not notice another few grams. If you are concerned try taping a few coins to the side to see how the added weight affects you. If you find your self leaning left or walking in circles I would not add a socket
Im in the procces of transforming my dt770's into 990's and im wondering: what is the diameter of the hole in the foam piece? and do you have the specs of the foam or link to where I could buy the foam? Thanks heaps.
Adding weight to the back of the driver. As the diaphragm moves in and out, some of the energy goes into moving the the rest of the driver assembly in the opposite direction. Adding weight makes it harder to move so more of that energy goes into making sound rather then wabbling other areas of the headphones. Generally it seems to improve the clarity and extension of the bass
I work 14hrs a day 7 days a week - no time for a side job ;) but here is a link to where we sell the service jfunk.org/wpc/product/beyerdynamic-detachable-cable-mod/
Random question from a new headphone user, the 250 ohms probably won't run on my phone/pc but I don't want to spend extra money on an amp/dac right now. Is it possible/worth it to do this mod for an 80 or even 30 ohm version or would it be a waste of money?
You could run the 250 ohm off a PC or phone temporarily if you are going to get an amp in the future - They won't go super loud and you will lack a bit of control in the bass but I use 250 ohm headphones straight out of phones and laptops all the time. This kit will work on the 80 ohm but recommended for the 32ohm ones
As the diaphragm moves in and out, some of the energy goes into flexing the baffle. Adding weight makes it harder to move the baffle and you end up with slightly cleaner bass
That foam looks a lot more robust. Mine tend to rattle when I get a certain amount of bass in them. Would this foam help with that at all? I thought it was a problem with my specific pair, ordered a new pair and had the same issue.
Hi. Does the damping also fix the "Beyerpeak"? I also have an amp with balanced 2x xlr (1 left, 1 right) and I'm unable to find any adapters for my specific case (mini xlr to 2x xlr). Do you have any links for me?
Yes - our latest version with the foam insert does smooth it a bit. @@CustomCans As said, I need short adapter cables because of the price. My budget doesnt have place for 190€ for just cables. Because of that, I would like to do the whole mod myself but I am unable to find proper litz.Is there a way to get litz and paracord for the whole mod from you?
what kind of cable do you use in the braided cable?I would like to convert my DT990 PRO myself, but I can't find a cable like the one you use in the video. By the way, a very successful guide!!
We make those cables here from scratch. You are probably best building your own cable but we do sell them - I think balanced ones start from around £79
That is a tricky question to answer. A lot of people are convinced there can be no difference in sound between cables. I think I, personally, can hear a difference and if you check our feedback, a lot of customers are really impressed with the sound quality improvement but that may all be Placebo. I can say for certain that they will have a lower capacitance, inductance and impedance than the stock cables as well as being more flexible and less microphonic.
Have you ever given it a go on the DT 770 pro, 80 ohm? Like making it into a semi open back, detachable cable, etc? The reason I am asking it that I purchased this set a few months back but now some home studios are saying to use the DT 880 pro 250 ohm instead. I have a hard time determining if spending another 240 dollars Can, on yet another pair is worth the hassle and expense?
If you are happy with the sound from the DT770 then I would stick with them. We do make some mods to squeeze a bit more out of them but going semi open would be a big job and probably not worth it jfunk.org/wpc/product/beyerdynamic-dt770-mass-loading-and-damping-kit-v2-mod-kit-by-custom-cans/
So basically, the DT770 and DT990 use the same drivers, but they are configured differently internally. DT770 has sort of a ring around the driver that bridges to the back and closes it off similarly to any other closed headphone... MDR7506, ATH-M40X, etc. The DT990 doesn't have that tube piece inside, but has the vents, which are dampened a bit to tune the sound.... so what happens if I 3D print a new cup, that has vents on the back, stick some DT880 dampening foam in the back of that, and install it on a DT770 without the internal tube piece?... I would essentially have an intermediate between the 990 and 770 headphones. Maybe I can get the cleaner bass of the 990s and the cleaner treble of the 770s into one headphone.
It would probably not be that easy - there are so many things that effect the sound... it would be possible but would probably take a lot of testing and tuning to get them to sound the way you want
@@CustomCans Well in a sense I've already achieved maintaining good treble on the DT770s while letting off some of the excess base for a far more balanced frequency response simply with a pad swap to some aftermarket velours.
The litz we use is specially made for us to our own spec. But any litz up to around 1mm outer diameter should give the same sort of effect. That said.... Litz is not easy to solder properly so if you have not used it before, it may be better just to use normal wire. The difference in sound will be quite subtle
How much for you to do this on a DT 770 Pro? I love how my 770's sound, I just want to be able to have a choice between cables. Like when I am using the computer I can just detach the cable, and put a longer one etc.
I would advise against it. if you use a drill bit it is likely to end up central to the original hole and the driver won't fit back in. With a burr tool you can eat away at the plastic slowly and get the hole in the right place more easily. Have a look at the ridge the driver sits on.... the hole needs to be below that line. Burr tools only cost a few quid and you could use one in a normal drill
We experimented with quite a few but high density upholstery foam seemed to be best - I think the stuff we are using is 12.5mm thick and similar dimensions to the original insert
Nice work. So this foam mod also makes them more open backed in the process? I assume they leak a lot more than stock and you can hear more ambient noise?
You can leave out the foam to make them fully open but the foam helps reduce the peak in the treble. As they are pretty open any way and they have velour pads you don't get much isolation to begin with and I don't think this mod reduces it any further
@@CustomCans OK, thanks. Was just thinking this mod might make them more leaky out the back of the cans. I'm happy with a bit of ambient noise coming in, but the audio going out is more of an issue. Any difference in this aspect pre and post mod?
hello im interested buying a pair with the same mods that u just did but im all the way from california do u guys sell this kind of pair and do worldwide shipping?
There is a link in the description to a kit with all the pieces cut to size along with the weights and foam insert or if you search for bitumen sound deadening you should find blank sheets of it
What kind of wire are you using with the paracord? Would any wire work, or does some work better than others? Do different wire gauges and whether or not it's unshielded effect the finished mod?
it is litz made of 84 x 0.071mm wires per core each wire is individually insulated and the core is wrapped in natural silk fibbers to hold it all together. The outer cover is 550 paracord. So... nothing too exotic, a lot of the magic comes from the geometry rather than fancy materials
@@stickyfpv5231 Yes that should be pretty similar. If you have not dealt with litz before, I would recommend having a good practice soldering it before you try to attach it to the drivers - it can be much harder to solder but there are lots of guides online. Just remember that as all the strands are insulated from each other , you need to make sure all of them have solder on the end or the ones that don't get solder on won't carry any signal
@@CustomCans thanks for the tip. I’ll make sure to tin the wire really good. Too bad I had to order the litz from China so it will be a month before I get to try lol

Is there enough room I don't know how much these kind of socket need and I don't really want to ruin a pair of working headphones lol Also, I don't know much about audio so I don't know if it need specific cables, I noticed some had not only copper inside, regular wires wouldn't do the job ?

I just followed your video and I was wondering if there was something I could have done that makes the sound a little muddier? Just seems like less definition on the low end. I am sure it will just take some getting used to, but I wanted to check. Thanks for the video and selling the kits!
It is a bit tricky to tell without having a look. If you have the older kit with the lead weights then I would check to make sure you have not blocked any of the holes on the back of the driver, If that is not it, you could email us some pictures of the install and we may be able to see something J

Sorry for the late reply, I never saw a notification from YT that I got a reply
love your work but idk why would u make it heavier does it make it sound better or is it just a preference thing ?
The weight is added to the driver enclosure . Essentially it gives a bit more mass for the diaphragm to push against. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, so as the diaphragm is moved in an out, the enclosure tries to move and flex the baffle. Adding more weight in the right places means that the enclosure is harder to move so more of the energy goes into making sound, especially in the sub bass region where the diaphragm has to move a lot.
So... the mass loading helps the driver recreate the very low frequencies more accurately with less harmonic distortion.
Couldn't you just use the wires that already go to the cable to connect to the XLR jack? This way you don't have to rewired everything?
Yes, we do it like that for people that don't want them re-wired . Here is a video showing that kind of thing

@@CustomCans love your work. Have you done anything with the Custom Game? I would love to find some Mods even backplates, upgraded wire harness, maybe some color, another option for backplate material 🤔 that isn't cardboard. Maybe a more open option for outdoor use. I did buy 990 Ear cups the velour those have helped outdoor use.
for what reason you added the extra weight to the drivers? what efect has that mod?
It stops the back of the driver moving as much so more of the energy goes into moving the diaphragm. It gives more detailed bass and a little more bass extension
Nice work!
Thanks!
Do we need special soldering iron or would normal ones work? Does it affect the sound ultimately?
Interesting stuff dude good work
Thanks Haze
You are legend 🔥
Thanks ;)
I'm looking to make one of those cables DIY could you share what thickness the parachord is?
4mm
Does the xlr mod make them feel any heavier on the left side?
You already have the cable dangling off the left side so you probably would not notice another few grams. If you are concerned try taping a few coins to the side to see how the added weight affects you. If you find your self leaning left or walking in circles I would not add a socket
@@CustomCans cool thanks for the reply and awesome video
Im in the procces of transforming my dt770's into 990's and im wondering: what is the diameter of the hole in the foam piece? and do you have the specs of the foam or link to where I could buy the foam? Thanks heaps.
We ended up making the centre hole the same diameter as the central part of the driver. The foam is 1/2" dense upholstery foam
@@CustomCans awsome! that really helps :)
What’s the reason for add those lead stripes? Justo to add some mass at the headphone it self?
Adding weight to the back of the driver. As the diaphragm moves in and out, some of the energy goes into moving the the rest of the driver assembly in the opposite direction. Adding weight makes it harder to move so more of that energy goes into making sound rather then wabbling other areas of the headphones. Generally it seems to improve the clarity and extension of the bass
Do you sell DIY kits for the 990 pro? Can you recommend where to source some proper density foam?
We don't at the moment but I will try to get one listed next week for you and add a link in the description

@@CustomCans oh, thanks anyways man!
This kit will work on the 80 ohm but recommended for the 32ohm ones
nice job 👍 maybe you can upload some measurements.
Yes - I will get some nice waterfall charts made and stick some links in the description tomorrow
@@CustomCans nice! One more question: do you sell modding kits for the DT880?
@@Domestos99percent no not at the moment - beyerdynamic do seem to have put more love into the 880 and there is not that much improvement to be had
Wonderful mod, just wondering what the point of the extra weight?
As the diaphragm moves in and out, some of the energy goes into flexing the baffle. Adding weight makes it harder to move the baffle and you end up with slightly cleaner bass
@@CustomCans that’s really clever. thanks for the response
That foam looks a lot more robust. Mine tend to rattle when I get a certain amount of bass in them. Would this foam help with that at all? I thought it was a problem with my specific pair, ordered a new pair and had the same issue.
it may... but it could be a hair in the driver or the driver may not be clipped in properly
Is there a way to leave the original padding in place, I like the way to full black version looks.
Yes you can leave it how it is - you can still fit the socket in there with it in
@@CustomCans Im assuming the extra foam wont fit though?

Hi.
Does the damping also fix the "Beyerpeak"?
I also have an amp with balanced 2x xlr (1 left, 1 right) and I'm unable to find any adapters for my specific case (mini xlr to 2x xlr). Do you have any links for me?

@@CustomCans As said, I need short adapter cables because of the price. My budget doesnt have place for 190€ for just cables.
Because of that, I would like to do the whole mod myself but I am unable to find proper litz.Is there a way to get litz and paracord for the whole mod from you?
what kind of cable do you use in the braided cable?I would like to convert my DT990 PRO myself, but I can't find a cable like the one you use in the video. By the way, a very successful guide!!
We make those cables here from scratch. You are probably best building your own cable but we do sell them - I think balanced ones start from around £79
Is there a hearable difference between beyer dynamics and your cables?
That is a tricky question to answer. A lot of people are convinced there can be no difference in sound between cables. I think I, personally, can hear a difference and if you check our feedback, a lot of customers are really impressed with the sound quality improvement but that may all be Placebo. I can say for certain that they will have a lower capacitance, inductance and impedance than the stock cables as well as being more flexible and less microphonic.
Awesome
Have you ever given it a go on the DT 770 pro, 80 ohm? Like making it into a semi open back, detachable cable, etc? The reason I am asking it that I purchased this set a few months back but now some home studios are saying to use the DT 880 pro 250 ohm instead. I have a hard time determining if spending another 240 dollars Can, on yet another pair is worth the hassle and expense?
If you are happy with the sound from the DT770 then I would stick with them. We do make some mods to squeeze a bit more out of them but going semi open would be a big job and probably not worth it
jfunk.org/wpc/product/beyerdynamic-dt770-mass-loading-and-damping-kit-v2-mod-kit-by-custom-cans/
If I run an EQ specifically for these cans, I should omit the damping material and weights, right?
It is totally up to you. If you have EQed them and are 100% happy with the sound then leave them as they are.
What litz wire are you using to make your cables?? I want to give it a go and build a cable
The litz we use is specially made for us to our own spec. But any litz up to around 1mm outer diameter should give the same sort of effect. That said.... Litz is not easy to solder properly so if you have not used it before, it may be better just to use normal wire. The difference in sound will be quite subtle
@@CustomCans thanks for the reply. I’m actually great at soldering. I build drones all the time and solder some real tiny stuff
How much for you to do this on a DT 770 Pro? I love how my 770's sound, I just want to be able to have a choice between cables. Like when I am using the computer I can just detach the cable, and put a longer one etc.
It starts from £46 I believe jfunk.org/wpc/product/beyerdynamic-detachable-cable-mod/
can you make the hole for the mini xlr connector with a drill bit or would you advise against it
I would advise against it. if you use a drill bit it is likely to end up central to the original hole and the driver won't fit back in. With a burr tool you can eat away at the plastic slowly and get the hole in the right place more easily. Have a look at the ridge the driver sits on.... the hole needs to be below that line. Burr tools only cost a few quid and you could use one in a normal drill
@@CustomCans perfect thanks for the advice. ill try and find a 9mm burr bit
Could you please tell me density and all features of the foam you used?
Thanks
We experimented with quite a few but high density upholstery foam seemed to be best - I think the stuff we are using is 12.5mm thick and similar dimensions to the original insert
I wish I could do this or know some that can
Enjoy the content!

What kind of wire are you using with the paracord? Would any wire work, or does some work better than others? Do different wire gauges and whether or not it's unshielded effect the finished mod?
The wire is up to you, You can re use the original wire - going thicker will reduce the impedance
OCC wire makes a difference..........
Do you have a parts list? Also do do this mod in house for customers?
I have now added a list in the description
my dt 990s just randomly stopped working on me like i wasnt moving or anything they were caught on anything at all
They have a 2yr warranty so if they are under that, get them sorted by beyer. if they are older then they are pretty easy to repair normally
Specifically what gauge and type of wire are you using to make your custom cables and use in the cans?
it is litz made of 84 x 0.071mm wires per core each wire is individually insulated and the core is wrapped in natural silk fibbers to hold it all together. The outer cover is 550 paracord. So... nothing too exotic, a lot of the magic comes from the geometry rather than fancy materials
@@CustomCans thanks for all the info. Right now closets litz I can find is 80/41. Pretty close

No - they do stick to the housing sometimes if they are very old though
Would re-soldering new cables affect the quality of the sound in any way?
Not if you do it correctly
Hi, I got a DT990 recently and I'd like to know if it's possible to mod it with a 6.35 jack? Is there enough room I don't know how much these kind of socket need and I don't really want to ruin a pair of working headphones lol
Also, I don't know much about audio so I don't know if it need specific cables, I noticed some had not only copper inside, regular wires wouldn't do the job ?
I like your style... Go big or Go home ;) - but... no it would not be easy to do as those sockets are quite deep and will probably hit the driver

I just followed your video and I was wondering if there was something I could have done that makes the sound a little muddier? Just seems like less definition on the low end. I am sure it will just take some getting used to, but I wanted to check. Thanks for the video and selling the kits!
It is a bit tricky to tell without having a look. If you have the older kit with the lead weights then I would check to make sure you have not blocked any of the holes on the back of the driver, If that is not it, you could email us some pictures of the install and we may be able to see something
