    It is the question nobody asked but should have ;)
    The Beyerdynamic 770, 880 and 990 all share the same driver design but have totally different sound signatures. Now... I know there are many versions of each of these headphones with impedances ranging from 32ohm to 600ohm which all sound different but in this video we will look at how they have tuned the sound of the driver an enclosure. It is quite interesting to see the differences and the techniques they have used to tune them

    Thanks for this breakdown (hopefully not literally). The 880 Edition may be designed after these 770 and 990s, but from what I understand looking at their old catalogs the 880 was the original of the lineup (early 80s, I had a pdf catalog from 1984 which shows a DT 880 Studio, DT 880 Monitor and regular DT 880 edition. They had lesser models too like DT 660, 550, 330, 220). The 990s came out later in the 80s as the last of the three, meaning to be the ultimate. Of course these models have been further tuned and redesigned over the years since then, so one made today probably does not sound the same as a new old stock (NOS) from the 80s or 90s. They also used to sell one in the early 90s called the DT 911.
    These days they sell something called the TYGR 300 R for gamers, which is a modified 990 that has different filter pads inside it. I think the same kind used in the Amiron, so the highs are less harsh.

      Actually, there is no foam in the regular Amiron Home (unless my model was just robbed of them. Maybe that's why they, imo, suck) . The Amiron Wireless has them for sure.

    Dang thanks for this video
    After getting some used DT 990s I got replacements from amazon. I still listened to the old pads (The seller said they cleaned it and the pads certainly smelled of some kind of cleaning chemical, so no worries on grossness) so I did have a point of reference on what these should sound like.
    When I got the replacements, from Beyer's official store page, they sounded way boomy and different. It wasn't until I watched this vid when you showed the differences between the pads that I realized what happened, I compared the two pads and sure enough; my stock pads had black foam on the inside and my replacement pads had silver foam. I got DT 770 pads when I wanted DT 990s
    Edit: It was from a third party amazon seller, not beyer direct, but it was on beyer's page

    Great video and I appreciate all the technical insight from the teardown. But there are also a couple of additional factors such as application of use and impedance in terms of which hardware to drive the headphones. For example, the 770 - (80 Ohm) seems to be the sweet spot in terms of versatility between studio desk and small devices such as Laptops/Phones/iPads etc.

      @@mustafadigibong6833 If you like the sound of the 80ohm DT770, I would probably stick with those and potentially fit one of our mod kits to squeeze out a little more goodness from them. The 990 have better treble but less bass. They are worth having a go on as the open sound has a certain magic but they do have a much more treble focused sound.

    • @paulwoaert
      @paulwoaert 10 месяцев назад

      But the 770s are heavier and less comfortable than the 990 (it's very obvious, I test one after the other at home at the time I write this comment). We quite easily forget that we wear the 990 on the head, which is not the case with the 770s, which are heavier but also more compressed on the head with a more suffocating result after only a few minutes. The 770s are also a lot warmer. On the other hand, the 770s have a sound that retains the bass more and we are more immersed with them in the sound perspective, largely because we are in a closed environment. This does not prevent the 990 from also offering a very clear sound with a bass layer@@CustomCans

      the 80 and the 250 are the same inside - it has been a while since I have done any 32ohm ones but I don't remember it looking any different inside. They all have the same headband so any difference in clamping force will be down to the thickness / density of the pads

    On dynamic drivers, to limit the airflow in the back of the driver means to tame the bass, all dynamic drivers have something there, cheap ones have paper, expensive ones have that net material like the 880's have in this video. AKG are the masters here, the masters of using the least amount of effort to tune their headphones, basically all AKG headphones have a small patch of that material stuck to the back of the driver where the air exhaust is. If you remove it, they gain a LOT of bass, pretty much a 5-10 db boost up to 200-250 KHZ. Unfortunately, the driver can't take it so if you do remove that it gains noticeable distortion. Anyway nice video. Personally I can't say I like what Beyer is doing here, I find it to be messy, but the results matter and they seem to be getting great results.

    Thank you very much for this comparison. I was very interested in how the design and advertising differed.
    I've never owned a pair of high quality headphones. I would be really interested in your opinion about how much the impedance difference within the same model of headphone changes the listening experience. (I see 25, 80, 250 and 600 ohm versions advertised.)

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 года назад +6

      It is difficult as they all sound different but in general - on the same model, the higher impedance ones like the 250 and 600 have more control and tighter bass but need to be run from an amplifier to get the best out of them. The lower impedance ones seem to have boomier bass but can run off most equipment like phones and laptops without any majour issue - the 80ohm is a good compromise

      The different impedance models exist so they are compatible with a wider range of source devices. If there was one "best" impedance, all headphones would just use that!
      You want to optimize for two things, damping factor (affects sound quality) and volume. Damping factor is the ratio of headphone impedance and source output impedance and the general rule of thumb is that you want this to be 8 or higher. For maximum volume the ideal load impedance varies by source device but for a voltage limited amplifier the lower the headphone impedance the more power it can pull out of the amplifier. Something like the iPhone headphone adapter will have a very low output impedance of below 1 ohm but not a lot of voltage so the 32 ohm edition would be your best option. The Google Pixel v2 dongle has the same voltage but an output impedance just under 8 ohm so to get the damping factor below 8 you need the 80 ohm edition. My Behringer UMC202HD has an output impedance of a bit over 10 ohms but plenty of power so plugged into that the 250 ohm versions would deliver better sound quality. 600 ohms is so exotically high that most outputs specifically designed for headphones might not deliver enough power into it, but for sources that have higher output impedance and have voltage to spare it might work best.
      I haven't tried them but I suspect the hype behind the 600 ohm model stems from some people comparing those to a lower impedance model on a high output impedance source, correctly noticing that it sounds better. This isn't necessarily the case with all sources!

    This is a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of headphones. So many headphones have a treble peak at about the same frequency, (even Sennheiser's HD800), at 6 to 8kHz, that I suspect that it originates in the physical dimensions that they have to use. The only way to mitigate this peak seems to be the use of damping material. Any ideas on how to eliminate this at source?

      The 1990 are pretty amazing - I have just been listening to them vs the 880 - the 1990 have incredible detail in the bass and sub bass and just have a lot more impact than the 880 but the 8khz peak can be a bit harsh on some tracks

The connection feel with the game is very bad with DT1990. I cannot comment on other FPS games. Impression from a guy with 8000 hours in CSGO, 1100 matches on faceit. I have the dt990s and 2 pairs of dt880s. I was wondering what the score was with 600ohm drivers. Nothing I had would drive them properly. So I got myself a proper tube amp. For pop and rock music the dt990s are really great but the dt880s for jazz and classical through the tube amplifier have to be experienced. I doubt that there are many other headphone amp combination out there which come close. It is like listening to some really high end speakers. Amazing imaging. Ps the 990s are basically unbreakable. I know mine are used by my sons as well.

    • @frog382

      You shouldn't doubt. I believe they sound great trough warm amp, but they are not even at the top of the headphone range, let alone speakers or enthusiast grade equipment. Ive heard 770... For 1 minute, it was so bad i dont even grant them a second chance, but i see how they would be more balanced with darkness and warmth. If you seek jewel of a headphone, try finding HD 250 Linear I 600 ohm. It has to be exact model and you will hear them open up with better amps.

    You are a bit comparing apples and oranges, when the DT880 is the Edition version and the 770 and 990 are the Pro-versions. The Pro-models are cheaper, more plasticy and meant for studio use and the Edition models are designed as hi-fi headphones. So the question is that is there a difference of the sound between the Pro- and Edition-models, like DT990 PRO and DT990 Edition... At least the Edition model does not have the part covering the opening in the middle, they do have similar looking internals, as I just had my own DT990 Editions open as I was replacing the cable, but is the difference mostly just cosmetic or something else... who knows. They are supposed to have the same drivers and similar sound according to Beyerdynamic, just different headband and fit (the pro model is supposed to be tighter and Edition more comfortable).

    Great vid but......even more confusing for somebody deciding between the 770s & 990s as the on-lines reviews are very conflicting when it comes to bass output, It seems to be around 50/50 on which model has more bass ranging form the 990s having hardly any bass at all.... to having more bass than the 770s which is very weird indeed....Would be great to hear your opinion after a sound test.....

    • @CustomCans
