      @@cheesun124 seems like a hard industry to innovate in though. You can shove way better and more expensive tech into these things but it's all going to be diminishing returns. It's the same with guitars where fender will release different editions but fundamentally it's the same as hundred dollar strat but with different wood and hardware. Same would be the case for headphones. You can have different drivers and impedance and build materials but then how would they keep the price manageable

      Wouldn't say they're all the same. Just that boutique brands like Audeze and ZMF have become way more popular than they used to be because the Sennheisers and beyerdynamics of the world haven't done anything interesting in years. I just started getting into headphones and have become a huge fan of your videos. I'm glad to hear someone I would consider an audiophile talk about using eq. Digging through a lot of the forums makes it seem eq is the root of all evil. I started with the hd 600 and quickly realized such a neutral sound does not fit me or most of my music tastes. After some money blown on other pairs I ended up happiest with the dt 990 pro 250ohm and a minor eq adjustment of -1db 4k -2db 8k -1db 16k. I couldn't believe how entirely different they sounded. It went from overly bright and fatiguing to
    an almost velvety pleasurable sound bringing out so much more detail in the high end while allowing me to more clearly make out the detail on the low end as well. None of the other headphones responded so well to eq and these ended up being the cheapest yet my favorite after eq. Although I am not a fan at all in the build quality. I do have that problem with mashed in cushions or more accurately cushion. The packaging was a poorly done job. I don't know who thought it would be a bright idea to package headphones that have extremely soft cushions in such a way that cardboard is mashing down the left side flat the entire time it is in the box. Left me with one side feeling like it has a 1000 hours on it and the other brand new. My left ear touches the padding over the speaker. Sorry for the long post but I owe the purchase of these partly to you and I'm grateful for your videos. Thanks and keep them coming.

This is easily the most in-depth review of this line of headphones on the website, even 3 years later. Amazing video! Just bought the 990 pro and tbh I'm really dissappointed by them.. I just get a headache from the first "s" sound I hear. It just pierces sooo damn hard. On the other hand, the imaging (as you said in de video) is soo nice and I love the open back feeling. Also the mid frequencies seem to be missing by a ton. Glad you said that the 880's have more mids. Definitely gonna return them though and try out the 880's. Hope they'll be better 😬

    I have been using 250 ohm DT 880 Pros since 2015 and never found them needing eq. With good recordings they sound well balanced and detailed with superb imaging. They are extremely comfortable and I am often wearing them for hours at a stretch. I don't find them fatiguing either. If you want harsh, uncomfortable, and fatiguing, listen to some Shure SRH 840s, which I also have.

      @metal571  2 года назад +2

      Oh man the 7506 beats the 840 by a mile in terms of harshness. Makes the 880 sound dark. But it is easily verifiable that the classic Beyer driver has a sibilance issue as it's been graphed many, many times by 60318-4 compliant rigs. This problem will also absolutely be lessened if your pads are not brand new so they may sound fine if you've never replaced the EDT990Vs that came stock on them, which flatten with time

    You need a Good power amp. With low impedance output. It is important to avoid increase in V shape.

    • @MrCholoPants3415
      @MrCholoPants3415 5 лет назад +2

      Well, this is 6 months late, but maybe it'll help someone else out if they happen to read your question:
      The 32 Ohm version is the best option for all around use (listening on an mp3 device like an iPhone or Galaxy phone, gaming, general music listening, etc.). I won't go into the sound quality differences because I'm not really qualified due to not owning a preamp, which would make the 80 ohm _likely_ the better option. If you don't have a preamp, I'd go with the 32 ohm, and if you have a preamp skip over the 80 ohm and go for the 250 ohm. Once you start going above the 30-80 ohm range, the headphones are almost unusable on anything without a preamp. The 250 ohm DT770s are SUPER QUIET at 100% volume on any mobile device or any device without a DAC/preamp.

    Getting a bit confused which one to pick these past few hours. I really like the Beyers a lot if I had to be honest the DT 770's look the most attractive to me. I kinda have a small head so I wouldn't want the DT 880 drivers going near my ear for using them in a long period of time. However, there's little price difference of DT 770 80 ohm and the 880 250 ohm in my country, so I'm totally leaning towards 880 since it's been described very close to the source track neutral sound, at the same time I'm totally sensitive to sharp sibilant treble sounds. I've never tried open/semi-open headphones before and I only have stereo speakers at home, one way or another which one would you recommend for multi-purpose recording/mixing/mastering?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 лет назад

      +jronepk for accurate sound I wouldn't choose any of these. That would be better with an equalized HD 598 or 600, or the K553

    • @Jann-Aron
      @Jann-Aron 8 лет назад

      Ok well.. Now after a lot of reviews I'm now considering the 600. Some store's offering to me for like $380, can't really find anyone selling them here in my country. The only issue is rip my wallet, apart from that, I wanted to get a USB vocal recording mic + studio headphone + audio interface (scarlett) with my $600 but now it just seems practically impossible starting with a $400 headphone..
      PS: I wonder if I still need to buy an amp?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 лет назад

      jronepk if price is that much of an issue the 598 doesn't absolutely require an amp and costs a lot less. If you're getting a Scarlett (I have the Solo) then you'd want an XLR mic not a USB mic. That's even more money. If you want to go on a budget try the ATR2500 USB and ditch the interface, and grab a 598.

    I mostly agree with your review about the Beyers. I have found, at least on the 880's premium 600's, after burn in the treble subdued a bit or i got use to them. I much prefer my 880's to many of my cans because of the insane resolution. I can hear flees fart. My take is Beyer and distributors are marketing this headphone to everyone for sales; these are not designed for causal listening, but rather for studio editing. My most natural set would be the HE400s which I love but the 880s are awesome and may be my favorite. I am amping the 880’s with a classic 70 amp (Nikko nr 819) which has a tube like , darker sound. Maybe that combination makes it tolerable.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 лет назад +3

      I would agree, the 880s are good for fixing minor errors but for actually doing a final master I'd rather go through the 650s which sound a lot more natural. The HE400S is supposedly excellent and slightly better than the 600/650 but I haven't gotten my hands on one yet.

    I actually enjoy hearing about these wearing issues (also with respect to your new HD800 review, where you talk about much more expensive cans) - that makrs me less insexure about my struggle with my CIEM fit. My right ear canal is slightly wonky shaped so that the positioning is slightly less stable (not a mold issue at all, the form of the canal and concha makes them slide in and out more easily) and I have struggled a lot with it. Thought about buying headphones although I absolutely love CIEMs for a multitude of reasons. (I own Limr Ears Aether R - you would enjoy them, a near field / harman-ish tuning that is slightly on the bright side, but not by treble weight but rather through a very vibrant upper midrange which is bone dry, blazing fast and super smooth. Of course, the general timbre of the other bands follow suit.)
    Cool videos, keep up the good work, man! :)

  • @amirgrant844
    @amirgrant844 8 лет назад +3

    The DT770 250 ohm can be harsh in the treble like you said but I find that when I turn the headphone way down, the treble becomes revealing instead of annoying. The treble is like a reminder mark for me. If the treble gets really spiky to me, that is a sign I need to turn my headphone down to a more ear comforting level. If you pass that level even in the slightest, the treble gets spiky. This is a good thing for people who do mixing/mastering in general. You are not suppose to mix with your headphones or monitors cranked up anyway and just incase you don't remember that, that spike in the treble will alarm you. What I don't like is that because of this, I only see this headphone as useful for mixing. When I want to party or do some casual listening, I can't really do that with these because if I do, the treble spikes up. For headphones to be so damn comfortable, that's a shame.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 лет назад +2

      +Amir Grant Actually you are supposed to listen at 85 dB from what I've read for mixing. The treble is inherently inaccurate in these and there's better stuff out there for mixing

    • @amirgrant844
      @amirgrant844 8 лет назад +1

      +metal571 Knowing what your equipment sounds like is key. I was just reading about how a mix engineer mixes with sony 7506's only when he's on the road and still manages to nail his mixes according to the mastering engineers he sent his mix to. Stunning, isn't it? People think that they need the flattest sounding everything to have a great mix when in fact, that isn't the case. It all comes down to do you know what you are doing and are familiar with what you have or not.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 лет назад +1

      Amir Grant That will still leave you with only a general idea of the mix though, since you're lacking the resolution and soundstage of better headphones

    • @amirgrant844
      @amirgrant844 8 лет назад

      +metal571 Question. How did you get so good at eq and being able to hear and pinpoint different frequencies? I mean, I can do that to a certain degree but I'm nowhere near as good as you with that.

    • @amirgrant844
      @amirgrant844 8 лет назад

      +Amir Grant By the way, sorry for the confusion. Yes, you are right. Your headphone volume is suppose to be higher when you mix but the actual mix and tracks in the mixes should be cut down considerably low because if the tracks or actual mix are too cranked up, the mix will become messed up due to clipping and other various issues.
      Mastering makes your entire track louder and clearer through compression, limiting (which is really just super hard compression), eq and more.
      So in other words, what I'm saying is if you have your headphone volume at 85%, your mix isn't suppose to be blasting still. The reason for the higher headphone level is because of the lower track levels from what I understand.

    Hi metal, I've been watching your reviews and really enjoying the information you provide! I recently bought the 32 ohm DT 770 Pro (with velours), replacing my M50x which became uncomfortable to me. When I first got them I had the same reservations...they were so bright and sibilant I felt I'd made the wrong purchase and considered returning them, but I was determined to like them, as I loved the bass and detail. I can happily say, one month later, the treble has really calmed down quite a bit. In fact I think their bass and treble combined make them quite neutral, or depending on the recording they can exhibit both brightness and warmth so they're fairly accurate I'd say. Bass isn't too much unless the recording calls for it. Sibilance is only present on a handful of tracks where the mastering probably highlights it, and as of right now that's my only complaint with the sound but it's not nearly as bad as it was when I first listened to them. I went with these over the 598CS, my other choice. In fact when I went back and listened to the M50x after using the Beyer's for three weeks I was like "I can't believe I liked these so much" lol. Not that they're bad but these seem to be in another league, and they're priced around the same.
    One thing you mentioned is that the 80 ohm version has more mids than the 250 ohm, but I've read the contrary? Either way thanks again for your review! One closed back I'd like to try someday is the PM-3 :)

      See my comment on the 80 ohm review for an update. If you can deal with the wild treble of the 770 it has awesome detail and soundstage for a closed headphone, in the end, regardless of which impedance you choose

    • @briancaulfield7251
      @briancaulfield7251 6 лет назад

      I found it hard to tolerate at first, since coming off the M50's which have a darker signature, but now these don't seem nearly as bright as they did out of the box. The treble is extended nicely and now it never gets too harsh, only close on very bright masterings, at least in my opinion. I can now turn these up louder without the treble killing my ears, before I had to keep it down lol. I also think the leather pads on the 32 ohms add a little bass/reduce a little treble but I have the velour ones. I did read your new comment on the 80 ohm. It seems they changed them to sound closer to the other versions but I've also read about manufacturing variances between sets

      Nowadays I lean more towards the Harman response side of things, such as Audeze's house sound with some boost below 150 Hz. Got kind of tired of dealing with Beyers personally. They're very well performing headphones generally but not to my taste at all anymore

      Ooh, I'll check out your Audeze reviews then to learn about that type of sound sig. Based on my adoration of the Sextett, I just bought the K240 DF to see the difference without the six passive drivers. Audeze is a bit past my budget, but I would like to try the Beyer DT 1990 Pro in the future, and maybe a used HD 800 (and apply the Super Dupont mod) in the far future. For now though, the vintage AKGs with my modded out Bottlehead Crack are completely nourishing and rejuvenating. :)

    I'm glad I saw this review! I use my 770 pros primarily for recording and mixing at my home studio and I bought them because over the years whenever someone had beyers in a studio, it seemed like I had an easier time playing in tune... Probably due to the extreme amount of high end information... Still considering trying to find a second hand pair of 770 premiums because the closed back is essential for tracking...But I'm a little concerned the high end might be overwhelming, or that the looser grip might mean less isolation... Do you think the 770 premiums would be a good recording headphone? I have those shure's too btw, they sound great but mine make too much plastic noise if I move at all while recording sensitive material...

    Hello, I own a pair of 600Ohm DT880 premium. To me, for the price, they sound really good. They are not shining particular in a specific area\genre, but are more versatile, a all around set of headphones. they might not be the most fun, especially not in more bass dependent music. The treble is a little sharp, thin and tinny only to the point that i notice it when I try to. over all soothing fine piece of equipment for home listening. Ps. Imo (Note: have not listen to that many headphones above the 300$ price range.)
    Question: If i like the signature, responsiveness etc. of the 880's, would you recommend the T1?
    Thank you.

    Leaning towards buying the DT990 pro. Alot of people say that the mids are recessed abit. Does that mean that its hard to make out what the singers are singing ? Or is it like the singers are pushed back in the music but still able to hear and make out the words the singers are singing ? After EQ does sss sounds in music get better or still the same ? Hope someone who have bought these can shed some light.

    I am looking for a good pair (first pair) of closed back headphones that I can use for mobile applications sometimes (plane, walks, bike, ski). Recently I tried the 32 ohm version of the dt770s and am finding the highs are really piercing, but love the bass and the mids are good with a lot of music I listen to. They seem to be really efficient, 20ish% volume for me is good for most tracks right from my phone. Wondering if it would be worth trying the 80 ohm to see if they're not as harsh like what you were saying about the 250 ohm? I plan on getting the hd600s with a dac/amp when the time comes haha

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 лет назад +1

      If you're listening that low the 80 ohm would be worth trying except that it has a much longer cable so that's not quite suited for what you're trying to use it for. Unless you're okay with bundling it up a bit - yes the 32 and 250 ohm DT770s have much more treble. Even I was okay with the 80 ohm treble levels, and I'm used to my HD 600 so that's all you really have to know there.

  • @teok8855

    Sorry for the long comment, my interest for quality sounding audio is relatively new so there may be some terminology mistakes, but I will tell you what I heard. I had the opportunity to try out the DT 770 PRO 32 ohm and DT 990 Edition 32 ohm variants at a local store that mainly sells studio and professional equipment but they also have an "audiophile" room. I wanted the 32 ohm variants because I wanted some portability, and secondly I wanted beyerdynamic because I value detail and the price of 160 euros seems nice. First the DT 770 PRO sounded too sharp, so sharp that my head started to hurt, while the DT 990 edition had pleasant treble. I am 25 years old, so I think I am not desensitized to highs. I did try to drive them of my iPhone 8 Plus and they sounded dead, averagely detailed, unremarkable. Even my shitty 60 euro, 5 year old Kenwood IEMs sounded better. I asked for an amp, because none of the reviews I watched and read described them as boring, so I assumed the reason for the poor sound was the phone. They plugged them into a speaker amp, could have been from NAD and also something else (sorry I'm new to this, but I will ask about the setup next time). Needless to say the difference was night and day. I was listening to a modern blues song (don't know the name), and everything in it sounded right to me, very clear, detailed, highs were pleasant, bass was sharp sounding, if that makes sense, detailed, clear, not muddy, pretty deep tho not extremely deep. Soundstage was wide. I can't comment on imaging, I did listen to one song and maybe didn't pay attention to that. Mids I can't recall because I was focused to hear if the highs would be piercing and if they would sound very detailed as most reviewers claim, however they weren't overly recessed as I later read some reviews stating. When I heard the DT 990 250 ohm PRO, I noticed they were slightly more detailed and highs were more pronounced, maybe due to stronger clamping force. The DT 770 PRO 32 ohm sounded better, highs were a bit less pronounced than they were through the phone, but still too much for my taste, and the clamping force was uncomfortable, while the DT 990 editions clamping force was so weak I thought they would fall of if I made a sharp turn. So I came to a conclusion that all these variances in revewiers conclusions are due to the headphones being used on different amps, different sensitivity to highs due to age mostly and different size of head and shape of ears. It's best to try them out yourself. After trying out these headphones I saw Z Reviews testing the DT 880 Ed 600 ohm with a speaker amp and he was very impressed, so I thought to my self maybe speaker amps are better for headphones? Also have you had the chance to try out the Sennheiser HD 560S? Thanks for all the video reviews, I hope you come back some day, if not on youtube than maybe a written review somewhere :)

      KReiiP yeah the DTs are bigger and much more comfortable. Actually the DT990 would be ideal for gaming. The 250 ohm Pro should do the job well. Largest soundstage of anything you mentioned. The HD 600 is the most accurate but its soundstage just isn't as big as other open back headphones.

      KReiiP the Pro clamps a little harder and has a coiled rather than straight cable. That's about it. Same drivers in both if you choose the 250 ohm version. The Premium is a better choice if price isn't an object. Otherwise I'd buy whichever one is cheaper. And make sure you have an amp of some kind as they are high impedance of course.

    what are some good closedback headphones for rock/metal, as well as some that are good for jazz/blues/classical? I ask for closed back because I haave a few open backs that I use for listening at home, but I want something to take with me when I'm on the go and just have my phone with some high bitrate mp3s/flac files loaded up on it, I would prefer if they are something that don't require an amp if possible, and I would like to keep them under $200 if possible I've found that the DT 990s are also good for stealth games as the do pickup on footsteps and positioning of enemies quite well, thus you know if it's safe to go down a hallway, or snake past a certain door/window/opening as you can tell be the footsteps if their back is turned to you or not.

    Nice review! Still struggling between between DT770 80 vs 250 ohms. I'm leaning towards having the 250s because I like clear, natural-sounding headphones but hate the idea of needing to use an amp all the time. At the same time, I'm dreading the bass of the 80s will be too much for my liking or might make me feel sick of it eventually. (I listen to all music types)
    I've read your comments months ago that you already have the 250s and wrote that it is the best sounding among the DT770 line. You wrote also recently that you regret selling your 80s (after being sick about the bass). Knowing that you used and abused them both I'm just curious what made you change your mind? Not much of a difference between the 80s?? Tired of being dependent to an amp? or just plain preference? Hope you clear this up. Thanks!

      +evilbollweevil1 both have a lot of bass, but the 80 ohm has even more. But the 80 ohm lacks the painful treble of the 250 ohm, which is why I regret selling it. A better option if you don't want too much bass but can always add more later with EQ would be the A900X. You lose some soundstaging ability with it though.

      @@metal571 You were so right. I got the DT 990s and the AKGs for cheap, but the DT990 are hard to control and frankly hard to tolerate compared to what I had before. Im currently in the process of selling them again after not even a week. The AKGs are great though :)

    I am aware this is a rather old post, however I have a question pertaining to these headphones and how they compare to the Beyerdynamic T70/p...? I don,t know if you have checked those out but I appreciate the detail in your reviews and thought I would ask anyway. I want them for my general listening pleasure, as well as some light studio use as my cousin is a D.J. and uses my sh** sometimes. I prefer something with bass but am more focused on the clarity and detail of the music as far as distinguishing instruments, and vocals is concerned. I want to hear the music as intended to sound with virtually no coloration... What do you recommend? All I know is I don't want anything made in China reguardless of where it was designed.

    I own a pair of the 880's and am thinking about getting the T1-2nd. I am using a Beyerdynamic A-20 amp. I am planning to get the questyle CMA 800 R amp(s). Is it worth stepping up to the T1's and have you heard the amp and have an opinion. My end game is the Abyss 1266 Phi. Thanks

    I'm currently using Beyerdynamic dt 770 pro 80 ohm. Do you think jds labs the element (amp +dac combo) is overkill for this headphone or fiio e10k is enough? Thanks.

    Just upgraded from my trusty Sony MDR 7506 to the Hifiman HE500's and I'm missing the treble, wide soundstage and detail I've become used to over my last 10 years of sticking with the 7506's. How would you say the DT770 80ohm Pro's compare to the MDR 7506's when it comes to fatigue and treble pain being shot into your skull? Much worse?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 лет назад

      +squall6789 if the HE500 actually sounds worse to you than the 7506, I can't recommend anything. The enormous advantages of the HE500's treble clarity should have been obvious from the first 5 minutes. If you want to stick with the 7506, stick with it. In the meantime I'd give the HE500 another week of listening, then switch back and decide if you still want the 7506. If not, then I don't think you're going to like anything else since the 7505 is a very specific sound signature.

    I am very perplexed about my DT-990 premiums. I own the 770pro (80), 880premium (250), 990pro limited black (250), and the 990 premium (250). The 990pro I got used, the 700 new, the 880 open box (probably used but like new), and the 990 premiums were like unknown but likely return stock. The 990 premium have extremely bloated overwhelming bass, WAY more than all the others, to a degree that is almost inacceptable that bleeds over and almost covers the mids. All the others have a much more similar sound signature (albeit noticable in their differences, not even close to how different the 990 prem are from them.). I also note that I have to turn the volume way down on them because they are so loud (interesting the 770 and the other two are at the same volume setting, even though they are lower Ohms, yet the 990 prem are supposedly the same at the other two.). I also notice the amount of noise floor is far worse on the 990 premiums. Any noisey amp is far more obvious with them producing far more hiss than all the others. Is there something wrong with these, because it really doesn't make sense?

      I am pretty new at recording audio. Mostly myself and some friends. Right now I'm mostly just recording acoustic guitars, vocals, and harmonica. I'm looking for some decent mixing headphones. I think I'm going to try the AKG K240's for now. Your review was very good on them. If I like those I may look at getting the q701's, which your review on those were great as well.

    I recently bought the DT 990 Pro 250 ohm and I’m actually impressed with the sound. I agree the treble is sharper than my HD 6XX but the pay off is in detail. My hearing cuts off at about 13 KHz so I think this type of sound suits me better. One thing I’m not so impressed with is the build quality. I found the pros to be a little cheap feeling. Comfort is good but I have to fully extend them to go around my giant melon ( I don’t for my sennheisers). They were $169 CAD so at that price, a good purchase but I wouldn’t recommend them at a higher price.

    Are you sure the treble on the premium is actually stronger rather than the mids and lows on the pros being stronger because they seal better with the tighter clamp?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  2 года назад

      Not really. Old video and never compared the two side by side but pad condition and pad compression affected by clamp force are a major factor in FR indeed

    I need help- I need to decide between the DT770 32 ohm, 80 ohm, or the DT880 32 ohm version.
    My main use for the headphones will be for gaming on the ps4, listening to music on my phone (will a phone dac drive the 80 ohm version?)
    Please help me out. I need an honest opinion! And thank you in advance!!
