If they redid the pip system and actually matched it with what survivors should be doing (Chase, generators, healing, unhooking, pallet/flashlight saves, protection hits, hex totems), they could make a decent MMR system using that. Also, not require that you have points in every single category, but allowing them to get pips from just doing one, if it's done long enough. Not only would it lead to more even match ups, it would also push the survivors towards objectives that they should be doing for efficiency. As it stands right now, the MMR system and pip system are at odds with each other. I tested it one season to see how far I could climb without ever escaping, I made it to gold pretty easily. Not only were the killers I was matched with getting easier, I was still gaining pips every game. They should be one in the same.
Right now, the Claudette hiding in a bush, and escaping without ever helping teammates benefit the most. It's the biggest flaw with how survivor is calculated.
Hopefully this is a step in the right direction with them finally allowing us to see our own MMR. I swear when I play SWF with my friends who aren't the best players, the MMR is cursed. We either get killers on their level that get blown away or ones on mine that they can't handle.
Its crazy that we have to only speculate about the details of a sweeping change in our game because there's such little transparency or communication from the devs
Well, every time BHVR DOES tell the players something, they can't seem to avoid talking in brain-dead corporate speak that says nothing...and yet they're still constantly putting their foot in their mouth.
That's likely cause they are indecisive & don't want to draw any attention to bugs. Remember how they made fast vault land further from the window. Then claimed it was meant be like that all along & it was a bug fix. Then reversed it a couple wks later making fast the same as medium. Then fixed it for male characters only.
Call of Duty has become a lightning rod within its own community for discussions on SBMM. The matchmaking has problems, but the playerbase exclusively blames it on the very concept of SBMM, and how strict it is. Saw someone last night complaining that they were getting matched with top 250 players, and my immediate thought was that either matchmaking isn't strict enough, or that they're quite good and are just complaining because they want to match with lower-level players. Saw a video once of someone in... one of the Black Ops games? I don't remember. They tanked their MMR hard by losing matches for a few hours just to passively observe what it looked like at the low end. They were literally running in circles around enemy players, who didn't have the skill to track them. Anyone who says that SBMM isn't a good thing aren't thinking of those players, and don't want to recognize that they're in the top 10, 20 or even 30% of players who have map knowledge, mechanical skill, and know how to make builds. "But my lobbies are so sweaty!" Yes, you're playing against people like you.
What a wonderful take that encourages healthy engagement, takes both sides and their complaints into account, and offers a potential compromise that both sides can be happy about. It's rare to see such mature and rational thinking online these days, and even rarer to see it be about CoD. Honestly you could easily forget this was made in a DBD comment section, since those tend to have heavy bias towards one side while completely ignoring the other side while making broad, negative generalizations about them.
This goes down to some entries being less fondly looked upon primarily due to their stricter matchmaking, a real shame considering some of them have very cool legacy maps or mechanics you just won't find as much community for. I'm not super convinced DBD would be any fun for me with super strict matchmaking at higher levels, but that definitely speaks more to the game's balance and meta than it does SBMM as a concept.
I did notice a difference in my soloQ matches. I am getting a lot better teammates who made some insane plays, I felt like I was really hitting the lottery with the teammates I was being matched with lately. Because usually its really a hit or miss.
I'm so glad it wasn't just a hallucination. I just started playing the game more regularly after like a 3 month long break of just being bored, and honestly it's the reason I've been playing more. My survivor lobbies have been a ton more hit or miss, but that's solo queue. Good God though my killer matches are like 70% 15k hour+ lobbies and I'm honestly having a blast getting my ass whooped. I know I'll get bored or frustrated sometimes but I much prefer it over just queuing for a match or two before work and hoping that I'll be able to have one match that actually engages my brain
I'm the opposite. Not really a casual because I've spent the last 5 years in fog hell (I have regrets). I'm "bad" at killer so I hardly noticed on that end, but about 80% of my time is on survivor and noticed a huge change in gameplay. From both fellow survivors and killers. Glad to not be totally crazy.
My conspiracy, since they took viewable ranks away, was that they only did it so people would stop pointing out games where red rank players would consistently go against brown and bronze ranks. Happened way too often.
I've seen people raise the argument that if MMR gets too tight that killers will play dirtier to win and it'll result in less fun than if killers are just chilling and going for equal hooks on everyone because they know they still have a fair chance to win this way. Do you think that's the case? In my experience, people who want to be as sweaty as possible already will be whether they're better than their opponent or not and those who don't want to be are fine losing more often as long as the matches are fun. People seem to decide how hard they want to try before the match has even started.
Surely it can be both. I much prefer to aim for 12 hooks, but have had a few recent matches where someone had to be tunneled out - because they were the only injured player, for instance - for me to even have a chance at 8 hooks. I despise playing 3 gen, but if I'm getting destroyed and in a certain mood I'm not above leaning on defence. Then there are also plenty of matches where I go for hatchets only on Huntress, or try mega hard as Nurse from the outset. That said, it seems a stretch to say the affect would be large on more than like the top 10% of the playerbase, so I'm not sure how much of an issue it is for anyone not taking the competition super seriously.
@@slavajuri It can definitely be both, it's just not something you see often. Back before bots were a thing people would still defend a 3 gen with their life even if someone disconnected at 5 gens and some still do today if someone kills themselves on hook at 5 gens. People who want to sweat their ass off and make the other side have a bad time will usually (in my experience) do so whether they're in danger of losing or not.

I think what happened was, the cap was raised, all the good players quickly reached the cap, and then everyone else caught up. Which would explain why the matches were difficult for a day, and then much easier

are you serious lol?? that’s just your bias and us vs them mentality showing. plaything killer has felt significantly sweatier. maybe try playing killer more than 2 games a week and you’ll notice
Regarding your point on it being difficult to quantify survivor skill with a number: I understand and agree that MMR being based on whether an individual survivor escapes is a bad metric, but wouldn't it be a *much* more accurate metric if survivor MMR was adjusted by the *team's* total number of escapes rather than individual escapes? It seems to me that even if a skilled survivor died after looping for 5 gens, their team would be much more likely to escape in this scenario, and adjusting MMR accordingly would surely be, if not perfect, a better approximation of their skill.
I understand why they wouldn't want to put all of the MMR info in their game (because of how the game is advertised), but it would be nice if they had an API that enabled those stats to be accessed and displayed on community websites, or better yet, their own site.
Hey Scott, quick question. Why am I being FORCED to connect to a dbd server in order to play a custom bot game? not only does this cost BHVR money to pay for my solo play, but the servers are seemingly worse. I don't have a lightning-fast connection, but it is plenty for me to play in pubs with no lag. info from anybody would be highly appreciated, as I can't find any documentation on the major forums
If they are looking into MMR, hopefully they decide to make a change to what affects your MMR in the first place. I know the old rank based system was awful because it put a hard cap on how good the game thinks you are, but that was the heart of the problem. The actual means that dictated your rank, the emblems, that at least is based on your actual actions within the match. They could maybe mesh that with the current system: Have your emblems be the main factor in your MMR. Like, have silver emblems be a neutral state and anything less hurts your MMR and anything more boosts it. There could still be an added modifier for deaths and escapes, but those alone wouldn't override especially bad/good emblems. Idk I just feel like the solution to the MMR issue has been right there the whole time, it just needs some tweaking to work.
Great so now my games get even harder than they are and I gotta play killer like I’m playing in a dbd grand finals tournament. To save my mental state I’m taking a very long break from this game
I never would have thought that's how the MMR vaccine worked, but apparently I have been proven wrong! This is why you are my favourite science channel Scott, can't wait for your next flat earth debunking video!
I want low mmr games....I wanna be bale to fk around as killer and still win, tired of having to play a certain way or build a certain way just to stand a chance.
Why is it hard to measure survivor performance? Just do the same as killer: if 2 survs escape its a draw, 3 a little mmr gain, 0 lose a bunch, etc. If you want more fidelity just do it based on hook stages. You dont need to measure individual performance, as it will average out over many games anyway. If you want it to adjust quicker initially you can add some bonuses based on performance, but thats not really necessary.
yes i do agree: i dont want enemies where i have to tryhard until im having a heartattack to win. but i also dont wanna have ppl with under 200 hours when i have 1500.
I dont need confirmation from the devs to feel or know whats going on. I think we know their game better than they do lol. Just like the 4 percent unhook isnt really 4 percent. Or hatch spawning being random. I can predict the general area of the hatch 9 times out of 10 cause i swear if you for ex. Slug one survivor then go for the other survivor it spawns near where the slugged survivor goes down. The 4 percent is definitely increased when you dont have a lot of hook states. Like if you 4 man slug then start hooking its almost a gaurantee youll have 1 or 2 self unhooks.
I played a few matches yesterday. I did an average of 1-2 kills. I've never been destroyed by survivors as hard as I was in these matches. I usually get 3 to 4 kills.
The whole reason they lowered the soft cap before was because killer numbers were absolutely PLUMMETING because playing killer in the top 25% was too fucking stressful, difficult and un-fun. So now they are undoing it, any bets on how long before they revert this?
Really wish they would change the way survivor mmr is calculated . Escapes are so stupid a metric for survivor . Its cool that have teammates that do gens . But having teammates who cannot loop a killer at all is pretty frustrating . Btw 3 days ago i got 4 nurses and then a wesker all on hawkins all with nowhere to hide and ultimate weapon .. Just shook my head
Man, sounds like my parents didn't get me the MMR vaccine as a kid, must be why my teammates in solo queue suck. I need to go get vaccinated. Thanks for the helpful info, Scott
I know I’m not near the soft cap and this absolutely does not effect me, but a couple days ago I was playing and me and my buddy got matched up with a god-tier Huntress. Like in our collective 1,300 hours neither of us had seen a Huntress that was genuinely this good at hitting shots. It was just weird I had a game like that for the first time in me and my friend’s history of playing DBD right when they changed the MMR stuff. I guess it could have been luck and a really good Huntress smurfing or something, but yeah. Just seems a little coincidental for everyone to have matches like this at once.
Its funny, I we were getting a lot more blights and xenos than usually BUT we’ve had a lot more skull merchants whom btw are very bad in chase and almost all of them are spinnable
Glad I'm not nuts, I noticed shittons of high hours players on both sides, both when I surv or killer. Literally had to pull myself away from breaking the keyboard last night vying a full iri p100 spirit with 3500 hours vs my like 600 after she basically downed one of us every 20 seconds and cycled through us before we could hit 5k blood points.
While this stuff might not affect average people in theory, for some reason whenever bhvr mentions fiddling with mmr like priests do with kids people take it as an excuse to start and try sweat as much in order to go get that invisible number and get even more sweaty matches. I might be wrong but the few times they'v done so I've noticed definitive change for a while. Ought to even out eventually though.
BIG no on the the wanting easy opponents. i dont play that much but when i do i dont have much fun if its easy. i want to question if im gonna get 2 or 3 or even 1 kill the whole match. i want it to be exciting, not routine puppy stomping
Thank you. These killer mains are actually looking to stomp on new players, so when the game gives them survivors that match their skill, they start to cry .
It didn't act like old rank system, old rank system was transparent: you at brown rank - you get brown killers. Something odd? Well, it's either returning player or deranker. Now it's just a guess work. As someone who has one gaming session once a month at best, I don't really see how my MMR is "lower for inactive players". Always sweaty killers, always sweaty survivors. Just get rid of MMR completely, imo.
sounds good on paper, but that means tunnellers, toxic players, sluggers, and griefing/trolling players will become more common if you get a chain of very good games.
I'd say that they did change the MMR, and for a little bit after we did end up running into the god players. That said, it's been almost a week, so people have probably climbed back up the MMR to hit that plateau point we were at before. Give it a month and you probably won't even know that they messed with the MMR at all.
I mean that depends what killer they are using because to assume someone is high mmr and that they tunneled you doesn't mean much. Some people suck fighting huntress so even an average huntress can look like a high mmr player to them
I think it should just be random, because Survivors have different skills that you cannot get a killer that is in the middle of their skill because even then the weaker Survivors will get killed first and then the high skilled ones have to play a 3v1 or 2v1. Skill cannot be quantified in this game with random maps with random layouts, tandom perks, random items, random add-ons, random killers, there is just too much randomness in this game to have MMR.
This has probably been explained before but why dont they let players see their MMR rating? Or give players the option to make it public on their profile?
Well the thing is, what counts as skill is thrown up in the air because the win condition, not being clearly stated, typically defaults to living or dying as survivor. This makes a debate about team wins vs team losses, as well. So, because of this very foggy concept of winning or losing, then skill also lacks a definitive answer. Someone who runs the killer for 5 gens is obviously good at running a killer for 5 gens, but if they died and ultimately lost, then how is that skill useful to them? Survivor is a team role, so the team's skill is usually defined by their weakest player, not their best.
I've been playing DBD since 2017 and I'd say am pretty good at the game, managed to get rank 1 about 25 hours in back then. MMR wouldn't work for me because I always play with friends (they're not very good, and I play very altruistic to help them out) and usually kill myself on hook so they have a chance at hatch which makes them very happy. I quite literally never escape, so how would MMR be accurate for me?
So sad that another RUclipsr I enjoy had to go and get political. 😭 I will not be getting vaccinated no matter what scot says to me. 😅 I am a red blooded American, I don't need poison in my veins. 💯 😎
At least in the past, a red rank survivor had more credibility even if just a little. Now I don’t really know. The only moments I get decent survivors is when they are on swf. Countless matches I use kindred and see players slowly walk near the hooked survivor being camped
To me it seems like they are concerned about lower player count projections if they are worried high mmr can’t fill slots without wait times. But I may be wrong but this raises a tiny red flag on my experience from other games
Thank you for supporting the MMR vaccine Scotch

Thanks RUclips, your programing knows no bounds.
Almost caught measles from an infected Legion. Thank you for this vaccine!
I never would have thought that's how the MMR vaccine worked, but apparently I have been proven wrong!
This is why you are my favourite science channel Scott, can't wait for your next flat earth debunking video!
Maybe the real soft cap were the friends we made along the way
I always do gens, help my teammates and loop the best I can then I just kms at the end lol my games are always chill
What if there were multiple caps? Thinking about this more, I'm not so sure how worth it it'd be, but it's an idea
BRO I FLASHLIGHT SAVE SO MANY PEOPLE SOLO Q AND THEN THEY LEAVE ME ON HOOK TO DIE does that affect my MMR 😤
If you want it to adjust quicker initially you can add some bonuses based on performance, but thats not really necessary.
this softcap increase is easier to perceive if youre playing at times no ones playing, this afternoon i got matched thrice against 7cmpwincess
yes i do agree: i dont want enemies where i have to tryhard until im having a heartattack to win.
but i also dont wanna have ppl with under 200 hours when i have 1500.
It's BHVR so even if it was changed it's probably buggy and not working properly anyway
Was wondering why i was vs only p100 killer mains (pig, knight, dredge, merchant for example) with a ton of hours more often last week.
Same, played yesterday, got 4 SWF or ultra coordinated survivors, I got 1/2 kills at max
The whole reason they lowered the soft cap before was because killer numbers were absolutely PLUMMETING because playing killer in the top 25% was too fucking stressful, difficult and un-fun. So now they are undoing it, any bets on how long before they revert this?
I'm seeing a "context advisory" on your video regarding the COVID MMR vaccine. Lol.
Probably went back to normal because people reached the soft cap again
Damn I gotta get vacations for DBD now?
I still don't get why our MMR values need to be hidden. Why can't they be visible so we don't have to guess all these things.
The MMR vaccine note on this video lol
no wonder my game quality is horrible
I still don't understand why TF is MMR invisible
While this stuff might not affect average people in theory, for some reason whenever bhvr mentions fiddling with mmr like priests do with kids people take it as an excuse to start and try sweat as much in order to go get that invisible number and get even more sweaty matches. I might be wrong but the few times they'v done so I've noticed definitive change for a while. Ought to even out eventually though.
I got 80,000,000,000 MMRs and now I emit so much 5G my cat got fried sitting next to me
I really don't know if I trust BHVR to make tweaks to the MMR vaccine but I guess we'll see how things shake out
BIG no on the the wanting easy opponents. i dont play that much but when i do i dont have much fun if its easy. i want to question if im gonna get 2 or 3 or even 1 kill the whole match. i want it to be exciting, not routine puppy stomping
Thank you. These killer mains are actually looking to stomp on new players, so when the game gives them survivors that match their skill, they start to cry .
Huh, I did not feel anything. Still doing 4k / 3k hatches all the time. So this is genuinely surprising.
Why don’t they just tailor MMR for Chase time and Objectives?

"Context: MMR Vaccination (link), (CDC Excerpt)"
Thanks for the highly relevant context, RUclips.
Just get rid of MMR completely, imo.
sounds good on paper, but that means tunnellers, toxic players, sluggers, and griefing/trolling players will become more common if you get a chain of very good games.
we need more mmr brackets...
I'd say that they did change the MMR, and for a little bit after we did end up running into the god players. That said, it's been almost a week, so people have probably climbed back up the MMR to hit that plateau point we were at before. Give it a month and you probably won't even know that they messed with the MMR at all.
YT wilding with that vaccine info pinned.
its easier to tell killer mmr than survivor because if you get tunneled by a good killer there is nothing you can do..
Gens have been FLYING in my killer and survivor games. For survivor I'm loving it but for killer not so much😂
Well the thing is, what counts as skill is thrown up in the air because the win condition, not being clearly stated, typically defaults to living or dying as survivor.
Dbd and behavior can change mmr all they want it wont make me not trash at the game
LOL THE MMR VACCINE THING
So sad that another RUclipsr I enjoy had to go and get political. 😭 I will not be getting vaccinated no matter what scot says to me. 😅 I am a red blooded American, I don't need poison in my veins. 💯 😎
Getting vaccinated immediately
I played as a level 0 hag against level 130 survivors last night
At least in the past, a red rank survivor had more credibility even if just a little. Now I don’t really know. The only moments I get decent survivors is when they are on swf. Countless matches I use kindred and see players slowly walk near the hooked survivor being camped
thanks god BHVR changed the MMR vaccine, i was worried it wasnt protecting me from the measles properly
To me it seems like they are concerned about lower player count projections if they are worried high mmr can’t fill slots without wait times. But I may be wrong but this raises a tiny red flag on my experience from other games
I've been struggling for years, guess they tweaked my MMR years ago
Thank you for the useful advice relating to the MMR vaccine.
Maybe the real softcap was the friends we made along the way
