Rodrigo Marques They're uncomfortable as well. I bought some for my aging M7 to get rid of some of the wear and tear and I couldn't use them for more than an hour.
Rodrigo Marques It also makes it dirty like nothing else. I've had a Nexus 5 skin for a while and while it looked great, I couldn't swipe the sides of the screen very well with the skin on the front. Also it cracked on the bottom pretty quick.

To be fair, the HTC One M9 has improved tremendously following the past firmware updates that have been pushed to the device. My own M9 shoots better than the iPhone 6 Plus it replaced in every condition except for low-light or video using auto-mode and auto-focus.
I sincerely believe there is a need for new reviews of the M9 after the 5.1 update (which is shipping right now) as it is a COMPLETELY different phone than the one at launch.
HTC introduced the iphone like design Apple just made it famous.

Why do you prefer your headphone jack on the top? I prefer mine on the bottom. I like to have all the outputs of my device on the same side. That way when I want to plug in my battery bank and my headphones at the same time, I can still place the phone in my pocket without putting any stress on the cables.
I see HTC customer service hasn't changed. The microphone died on my M8 a month after I got it. They wanted to charge me $400 for the repair just because I had it rooted.
In my case the entire board was faulty and needed to be replaced. I know rooting voids your warranty but good customer service will fix the device anyway if the damage is their fault, which they finally did after a month of e-mails.
Rooting your phone removes your warranty.

Movie Games I had that happen at a carrier once when trying to replace a faulty phone. They said they couldn't do anything because I rooted it so I told them to hold on. I went out to the mall food court, booted up my laptop, unrooted the phone and locked the bootloader and came back in like 15 minutes. I just approached a new employee and everything was A OK. The whole thing is silly.

The one thing this phone had going for it was it's gorgeous outer finish. It would probably be best to not cover that with a pretty garish vinyl wrap, especially in a review.
How about the thermal throttling? Try to run Antutu 2x 3x times in row and see the results.

You can remove the Downloads and Suggestions folder if you want Linus. Press the Home/Work/Out word on the widget then press the 3 vertical dots on the right side then click on show/hide smart folders
IMO, the two best last-generation phones (for the most part ) were the S5, and the One M8, but the M8 was just a little better. Comparing the next generation, I think the S6 is a bit better, and I haven't seen enough of other phones to even say that the M9 is the second best.
The chin bar is there because of the front facing speakers...there's necessary components behind it that can't fit on the bottom of the phone where most manufacturers put them.
I went from the M7 to the M9, and this was my first Android phone I didn't root. I think the M7 was a better phone rooted. M9 does have terrible buttons, so I use a cheap send case that makes the buttons very nice feeling.
Thanx for the heads up Linus. I have been a HTC One S user for 3 years and was just going to go to the new M9. I think I'll take some time and shop around now.

Linus, the m9 uses sapphire glass as a cover for the camera. it's very good to protect from scratches but it's shatters very easily because it's brittle

The only good thing about this phone are the speakers,the speakers are so fucking good,well,the m9 speakers are probably the best on any smartphone right know,but im talking about the sound quality bc the s6 speakers are louder,and the m9 has overheating issues,htc had to lock the 8 cores and the gpu at only 1.6ghz (idk at how frequency they locked the gpu but they did)
***** if you are all about speakers. Coming from a s4, I say my new z3 is more than excellent! I am in love with the front Facing speakers. The battery life is unmatchable (weeeell theres the droid turbo, but meh. Or mah. Get it?) and lets not forget all those slow motion 4k videos I have of the pool. Plus if you have a ps4, I love the screen sharing.
niofalpha Go for a Moto X (Or Droid Turbo For Verizon). The Moto X basically runs stock android, so it will be easy to use after the switch. I had an iPhone and went to a Moto X and never went back since. The Moto X also has front facing speaker and you can customize it using Moto MAker
The M8 just looks more desirable to me right now, prices are around $300-400 and some are even lower on amazon.
GreyParrotTek _ I have the m8 and goin to get the m9 soon eventually and nothing wrong with my m8 i love it. But I will say this . If you can afford the latest go for it. As someone who has sold phones for over two years and still am, there's nothing wrong with goin a year behind in phone models. In fact a lot of people despite how great the S6 and Edge are ( I think so too and I love my m8) the thing that kiled it for a lot of people was the lack of removable back ( which I think would have been okay) but more importantly the lack of an sd card( which I think really did it). Thing is everyone has their preferences as we can see just about everywhere. One will love the s6 another will hate it. Same with the G4, M9, Z3+, etc. But back to the point, people tend to go a year behind with phone models because theyre cheaper and ya not too far behind on anything. So I say go for it man lol its a nice lookin phone and price wise ain't too bad right now.
HTC really disappointed me this year. I'm due for an upgrade for my M7 and nothing about the M9 is compelling enough to upgrade to it. I'll probably go the S6 Edge route as this time they did something that really peaked my interest and just looks plain cool.

The audio port was on the bottom for the M8 as well, it was "removed" from the top of the M7.. you really should specify which model you are comparing parts to.
The M9 uses sapphire on the lens. I love mine, got it a week before it came out and it's been my favorite phone in a while. I've gotten used to where the power button is so when ever I pick it up i'm already at the power button!
But hey everyone has their taste and i'm a pretty big htc fanboy.
the issue i have with htc is their lack of support. they dont update based on if the hardware can manage, but instead, based on a 2 year cutoff. so, if you bought their high end phone, and it has the specs to run, say android 6, they still wont give you an update, even if your hardware can handle it.

The bezel with the HTC logo on it is a feature for me and I hope they keep it. Here's why: The navigation buttons are just high enough right now that they can be easily reached while using the phone one handed. The phones with the navigation buttons on the very bottom are such a pain to reach with my thumb, at least in my experience.
the one m7 and m8 did their job (mostly) they brought the market up to snuf on build quality. the m9 was closer to a camera fix version than an upgrade from the m8. at this point you may be better off just buying a set of portable speakers and getting a better flagship for your money or holding on to your M8/7 and hoping other companies understand how good front facing speakers are next year.

how about the audio performance? I'm not talking about the speaker, but the DAC and the built in amplifier. M8 was one of the best phones to be used as a digital audio player.

I really think too many people are being unfair about such a quality smartphone! HTC deserves more credit. Yes there is room for improvement but this nit picking is getting ridiculous. Samsung wouldn't have stepped up quality if it weren't for quality made devices like the HTC One M7 and M8.

While I do agree with your points Linus, my last HTC device was the Inspire (I learned the hard way how bad the phone was). My next was a Pantech Discover and it was a great phone while it lasted. Now I have the HTC One M9, and can't believe the improvements over the Inspire 4G. And again, I do love my One M9, but I do agree with your points, this was only a minor update to the One M8.

I'm still rocking my One M8 which I got as a fluke free upgrade from rogers last year. I honestly love the phone and am going to keep it for a long time. The camera really doesn't bother me much, other than the couple of times I was at a concert and couldn't zoom in worth a Damn. It's really disappointing to see that not enough has really changed in the past year to make it worth upgrading again. Not that it's not worth buying though. If you haven't tried a htc phone and your contract is up or something I'd highly recommend it. I'm just sad Linus ripped into it duo hard and made it sound like it wasn't worth buying.
I have a m9 and its the best phone I ever had. Like with any new phone you'll need to get used to the volume buttons. Most people won't buy a phone JUST by its camera. If you're into selfies and pictures "like Linus apparently" the m9 is not for you.
Chose m8 last year because I heard it provides best sound for headphones among smartphones. Indeed it is, but else from that, I noticed, that I am really satisfied with my m8, considering I don't use camera very much. I was wondering what htc can do better after such good product with their next flagship, and seems like they made their former flagships so good, that they remain solid choices even after over year or 2 release. Saying that I gotta conclude that htc gained my respect doing great job on m8.
I bought the HTC one m9 for 3 reasons front facing speakers ,expandable storage and pebble watch connect ability. the HTC one m9 does them things real well. the bezel, volume rockers/ power button for me is not a reason to change to a new phone like iphone 6 or samsung s6/edge imo but that's just me. Even the camera i'snt a good enough reason to switch.
i would choose one m9 over the s6 definitely, because m9 is more reliable, got better battery, better performance (s6 gets laggy from time to time), better speakers, better quality etc.

agree 1000%. I tried the S6 for a week and it was abysmal. Switched to the M9 a week later. Phone has gotten much better with updates as well.

I used to own the HTC M8 and I loved it minus the camera. It did pump out some good shots but exposure was all over the place and Battery Life was so-so in my experience. I was hoping the M9 would've improved on the camera at least. Battery life isn't a huge deal with Quickcharge 2.0. I ended up switching to the LG G4. I miss the heft and metal build of the HTC but the camera and battery life are a ton better. I use Nova Launcher Prime on either since I don't care for either LG's UI or HTC sense.. However Sense is better as a stock skin IMO
I'm buying a refurbished M9 in 2017. I never was a phone guy, but shitty Chinese phones like the one I had shit the bed by simultaneously getting a failing battery and a dodgy micro usb port are a waste of money, because it only lasted 6 months. None of these problems mean anything to someone who wants to be able to charge a phone in less than 3 hours just so he can make a 5 minute phone call or watch you-tube for 10 mins. I'm really looking forward to this phone.

Good review, except for using the dbrand which makes it hard to see the phone properly. HTC under estimated what its competitors did this year and thought they could get away with their tried and true formula. The M9 is still a very good phone, but there's nothing exciting about it. Let's hope HTC survive the year to make amends with the M10.

I like the M9. Most of the negatives Linus points out don't bother me. He is right though, the M9 doesn't seem like a flagship phone. Maybe an off year for the HTC One. Put out a slightly updated M8 to tide over till the true successor comes out next year possibly.
Please review the Z4 when it come out. I know Sony doesn't seem very relevant in smartphone market but apparently their phones are underrated. I'd like to see a review of one of their devices from a professional channel like this.
Im still using the One M7 Black edition. The only issue is the anodizing rubbing off on the corners. I wont be looking for a new phone until USB Type c is available.

The button position on the M9 was a big reason I bought the s6 to replace my M7. I did not like all the tiny buttons clustered together on one side of the device and I personally prefer the inky blacks of AMOLED. I miss blinkfeed for news.. Sometimes. But the rest of the phone is just so much better.. Even the software, as much as I hated prior implementations of TouchWiz, I just think works better on the s6.. Also I had the same issue with my camera on my M7.
if you put an otterbox or similer case on the m9 the buttons get much better. they stand out more and are more tacktile

Am I the only one who would prefer the headphone jack on the bottom?
I use Pocket Lock to turn off my screen whenever I turn the phone upside down, so having headphones not be bent against my pocket is always good. Furthermore, sometimes I use my phone with both a portable charger and headphones, which becomes annoying when I have to pick between either a bent usb cable or a bent headphone cable.
I have a $250-350 AUD budget for a new phone.
Top contenders ATM Samsung S5 ~$250, HTC One M9 ~$275 or Motorolla G4 Play ~$235.
My S3 is still OK apart from occasional thermal overload though can't seem to justify a phone in my price range.
If only Panasonic etc in 2017 made a tough phone, even if I had to save more for it. Built like an old Motorola or Nokia brick with physical buttons like a Blackberry in a larger phablet formfactor with a 720p or even 480p display with a 5-6k mAh battery.

To be honest the m7 set the standard for build quality in the smartphone industry, not the iphone as it is insinuated in your intro. Love the video though.

I dunno Linus, that's a lot of hate for a phone that didn't take a really nice couple of features like removable battery and expandable storage and throw them both away. I understand you might not need expandable storage, but it was definitely a requirement for me, and I know I'd be a lot less satisfied without a 128GB card in my phone right now. Also, I've agreed with you in the past regarding buttons being not tactile enough or easy enough to differentiate between, but while I did initially have a problem with my m9's buttons, I have gotten used to them very quickly and don't mind them at all now, especially since they are placed as centered as they can possibly be for optimal reach, while still having enough room to mount the phone to a windshield mount without having a button pressed. HTC might not have made a phone with fancy new features, but I like that I was able to spend $650 on a reliable phone that I know will be able to handle my needs for a while until some of the newer technologies have been refined enough for the average consumer.
For your next computer case review can you also cover it in an ugly as hell vinyl skin so we can't see it either? Or maybe spray paint it in your back yard? I really love reviews where I can't see the product being reviewed! Great job!

Here's my personal feelings of the M9, coming from the user of an HTC One M7 running Sense 7 and a fan of HTC overall.
When I saw the @evleaks renders, my hype meter was way past the red zone. It was so beautiful and clean. I thought that if that was real, HTC would've had a real winner. Then, days before the release, more and more leaks surfaced, showing that the phone will be nothing but an M8.1. I hoped that they're false. Unfortunately, when Peter Chou showed the device, I was very, very, VERY disappointed.
It's not much different from the M8, the camera is STILL sub-par compared to current rivals, it looks the bloody same, mostly (c'mon HTC. A FEW design tweaks shouldn't be hard, right?) and overall, while it's a nice phone, compared to Samsung's steamrolling Galaxy S6 and LG's storming G4, the M9 feels, well, bland.
HTC, think of some fresh new ideas and make the M10 DIFFERENT from not only the M9, but the rest of the competition as well.

I don't agree that the HTC doesn't stand out. Boomsound speakers are better by a lot than every phone, except the Nexus 6. That alone separates the M9. And you may feel the construction is boring, but it's still better designed than the IPhone 6 or the IPhone wannabe, Galaxy 6. The double anodized metal is over the front of the device now, where the M8 was plastic glued on. And the antenna bands are much better designed than Apples mess that flows in nonsensical directions. Not sure how you cracked your camera lens, since its Saphire. And you're wrong about the memory. It's ddr 4, not 3.
If you don't like this phone, try to use the HTC Desire Eye this is a HTC that is awesome, fast, waterproof, and in comparison cheap
Only bad thing about this phone is snapdragon 801.Yeah its an octa but it has some throtling issues and is hot after 2-3 minutes of playing an intensive game.Throthling is a thing where your cpu overheats at starts to under clock.Thats why LG G4 has a snapdragon 808 under the hood.Exemple
You run Antutu on HTC M9 and LG G4.You will get about 46K-49K on both.after second test G4 will score about the same but M9 will score about 41-42K and third time you run it G4 will score 44K while M9 about 36-37K and thats why i wouldnt reccomend htc m9 if you gonna play a lot of games all the time(its still a great device for every day)

HTC Sense ages horrifically. Even after the lollipop update, my M8 became nearly unusable after only 8 months, lagging when performing simply tasks like opening the app drawer or unlocking the bloody thing. I'll never stray from stock Android again.

panditbadit The M7 is so slow now. Even comparing it to my M8 makes it show how much it chugs. It was great for its time but phones become outdated very quickly.

Depends on what you do and how much stuff you install. It's by no means stable for now but it's usable and can be used as a daily driver
***** Try doing a factory reset. It's a sad truth, but my M7 is ridiculous. It's just as fast as before, if not better, and the battery life is a lot better.
Only issue I ever had with my m7 was the purple camera tint thing
