Why can't HTC get a all around great camera??? Either it's great in low light, but sacrifices image size or in this case it takes really good well lit photos, has a big image size, but suffers in low light. I'll say this for the 3rd year in a row when it comes to them putting an impressive camera in their flagship "Maybe next year" -M7 Owner
The M9 in silver and gold is to this day, one of the prettiest phones I've ever seen. I just picked up the silver and gold colorway brand new in box on eBay for $60 to go with my gunmetal grey M9 from years ago lol I'm so stoked to put it on display!
Back in the day I remember coming into work and someone had the M9 and being completely blown away by the speaker sound quality, very good speakers on those ol skool HTC phones.
I just bought an M8 for $250 and I'm just going to save my contract upgrade for the M10 or maybe the M9 plus. I'm still afraid the 810 is going to throttle, and the M8 is plenty fast.
Of course it is not a coincidence. It is also not a sign of a conspiracy either. They all agreed to HTC's embargo, thus once the embargo is lifted all reviews are posted at the same time. Some other websites accidentally posted their reviews before the embargo lifted, but HTC has admitted that was due to a communications error on their part (They changed the date but not every website was notified).
The quality of the review, pronunciation, art of making the difficult comprehensible is right there at the top and will continue for the rest of the year. Go Michael Fisher! You make not just technology but appreciating the nuances of fine presentation, an underrated ability, so much of a pleasure!
Great video review Pocketnow.. They just keep getting better. Nice phone too and I think I'd forgive it's low light performance. It's gonna be on my hit list for the future..
Something tells me that the evleaks render set peoples' expectations as to what the phone looks like to ridiculous levels and now they're sorely disappointed by the fact that the phone DOESN'T look like what Blass posted, and are now making shit up to make sure that this phone doesn't sell. Samsung isn't and doesn't need to be the only Android phone maker, you guys know.
What he ^ said. If they came out with that Evleaks design and a Sony sensor with OIS decisions would be very difficult right now, but they way this thing is It's like HTC forgot they were competing.
The good news here is that a lot of the cameras downside will be fixed through the time by software updates. I owned the M9 now and its by far better and different phone than my M8 👍 *****
One thing I think you guys should definitely include is the differences in warranty (US customers only I think). 1 year free replacement or $100 off your next HTC, this adds value to the phone.
That's not the issue, the issue is first impression. You walk into a store to test out this device and the phone is screaming at you "look at this, look at that" it would leave a bad taste in my mouth. I would rather those types of "features" be turned off by default and allowed you to choose to use them, most consumers won't know you cab turn that stuff off and they'll in return be turned off. I love HTC but they seemed to pull a Touchwiz here.
One of the best phone reviews I have watched. Real happy I shambled upon this channel. The gentleman's voice who is doing the review is not annoying at all compared to a lot of the reviewers out here. Hehe.
Excellent review and really honest and objective appreciations of the pros and cons by someone who knows what he's talking about, especially about the Sense suite! :) Just two little details : the multi-paging for thé multi-tasking view is something already present in official Sense 6+Android 5 updates for M7 and M8, like the face mash-up feature. By the way this is one of the great advantage of HTC which brings updates to its flagships with excellent quality and reactivity, with new ROMs and updates directly by the Playstore.
I am a few minutes in, and have a couple things to point out. 1) Lollipop's design (Material Design) does not really neither sheer flatness nor transparency. Those better define iOS' Human Interface. Albeit 'flat' is a somewhat correct term, it must be said that depth and shadows are just as important in the underlying philosophy. I think it would be better to call it 'simple' or 'minimal' rather than just 'flat', but hey. 2) 3:55. 9x9 grid? 3x3 perhaps? (Keep up the splendid work Michael. Love your reviews :D)
I thought that at the end of this video I would have decided whether I wanted the HTC M9 or not but all I can think about now is buying an IR-Thermometer. An informative and well constructed video as always *****
I currently own the M8. If HTC had made significant strides with improving the camera, I would have upgraded; however, I can't justify upgrading to a newer model with a camera that's just as hit-and-miss as the one I currently own, as much as I would appreciate the extra resolution. I'll keep the M8 another year and give HTC a chance for the 2016 offerings. If it's underwhelming, I'll reevaluate and look at the competition.
Didn't forget it; mentioned it in our first hands-on from Barcelona and it's covered in the written review as well (pocketnow.com/2015/03/22/htc-one-m9-review). Videos can only be so long! ^M
I swear HTC should have such with its ultra pixel technology. The camera wasn't that bad. The thing is smartphone is a smartphone. That means the camera doesn't have to be as good as a modern day dslr. You don't see any real RUclipsrs using a phone to make videos. I much rather have a fast responsive device that can take photos on the fly don't have to take seconds to process. The low light capability of the m8 was on beast mode. These are the pics I take out at night in the club or in the house. I'm not out in sunshine all the time and if I need that much pixel quality I'll get a good cam. Just think even the 4 ultra pixel years ago would have been fine and it's fine now if anything they should have made a 8 ultra pixel. Any time the four was even being compared to the other meant they were on to something. HTC should have kept doing what they were doing.
You guys are way more positive about this phone than other reviewers. I heard de viewing angles, contrast and brightness of the screen are worse than on the m8
I am one of the few M7 owners who is still happy with their phone. There is nothing out their that inspires me to upgrade from it. It still performs well and does plenty of what I want. The thing that has deteriorated is the battery. When it reaches 10% it suddenly drops to 2/3% in a few minutes, where as before 10% would still last a long time.
I'm currently owning a m7. It's good, but after the lollipop update it's been a tad bit slow for my taste, multitasking is slow now, app launching, etc too but the absolute main reason I'm upgrading is because if the camera. The one in using now sucks I'm low-light, instead of giving me pictures that are OK it gives me pictures with a blue cobweb over it. Yes I'm serious, it looks like a blue cobweb stuck on the screen, sometimes it even turns red. This apparently is due to a heating issue but comeon. I can't even take photos in medium lighting without seeing a hint of that blue cobweb at the edge of the screen.
An I the only one NOT disappointed by this phone? I never use my camera, the design is still gorgeous, the UI is amazing, and Boomsound. The only reason I'm waiting for the M9+ is because it has a bigger screen, which I want since I own an M8. But,I still really like this phone
i personally think when it was shifting apps around it was understandable because we use more than a twenty apps a day and do alot of things so if you different things during that time while loading your apps it will change again and again
Not bad. I'm not mad at ***** for this move. If it ain't broke, no need to fix it. Glad they stuck with the 1080p resolution as well. Despite what others may think, 2k makes NO SENSE (there may be a pun in there somewhere)!
Am i the only one thinking a phone was ringing, due to the tone in the background music? haha, but good video as always! It's such a shame that the camera is still the biggest drawback, as i was really hoping to see majer improvements there.
My 2 issues with the phone are camera and the multitasking window. I really like stock lollipop and even sense more as far as the multitasking window goes.
Great review and a sought after camera indeed. Although, I've been looking at the Asus Zenphone Zoom, don't know if it's out yet, but in their presentation, they say it's the best camera phone to have right now. They ranted on how its has a very low F stop(1.8/1.6) to handle low light photography, has 10 lenses inside with IS and descent zoom capabilities. along with a myriad of customizations to run with the gamut under the hood. Just wondering if you guys could have a review on it sometime soon. Thank you, I appreciate all your reviews! Peace!
HTC has got to the stage where samsung was last year with the s5. I am actually happy about it. It only makes a company put more efforts and pulls out the best of them. Just like how samsung had to bring a revolutionary change with the s6 which it did!
I think I'm going to upgrade from my m7, I'm thinking I may miss the stunning low light performance of my m7, but this is one thing I'm willing to put aside.
I have an HTC one M8 and I was hesitating to update for M9 but after the review naah I will wait for the M9+ with 2k display and the finger print scanner
they really need to fix that camera. and also do something with messaging. like i want to see them allow us htc users to respond messages without having to leave the app we are currently using
I wish that htc could give the option for capacitive keys. It would make the black htc bar problem fade away, thats why I like the m7 design the most. pls htc give us at least the option
People are always talking about HTC's keeps the same design but last time I checked iPhone's use to be glass and is now aluminium & Samsung use to be plastic and now is aluminum. Obviously somebody is trying to imitate, yeah we know the HTC camera is mediocre but over time I believe this issue will be addressed in a future update. Don't sleep on HTC
Very nice design Neat and customisable Skin & a snappy skin with no lag Boom sound speakers Expansion SD card Decent camera (Especially with the manual mode) Very good battery life ( I personally ended up with 35 - 45% at bed time)
Straight up no way too many reasons to let go off this phone but I'm worried about s6's touch wiz I hope it doesn't pull the phone down after all that I expected from it
I'm still using my m7 as I had a 3 year contract and it's still quiet speedy and the display still has a higher PPI then both the m8 and m9 :') my only problem with it is the camera and the Samsung galaxy s6 looks fantastic so I will prob get that instead of this as my only complaint of Samsung phones is the terrible build quality now fixed in the s6
I switched from apple to android about 8 months ago. I first had the 2010 HTC and my company bought me a Nexus 6. I love android overall, and this Nexus 6 is super awesome. But their is no denying that ilove and miss the HTC phone. I want HTC m9 bad because the quality of the product is so so boss and it is fast. I held one at the store and their is a difference in how it feels compared to m8. M8 slips alot but still great.
What should i go for? M9 or s6? Or wait for something else getting released this year? I'm leaning towards m9 right now just because i'm afraid of the bloatware on touchwiz and the things i've read about Samsung phones getting slow/laggy real quick (=6-10 months). Some advice?
As mentioned in the video the black bar is where display drivers and other things sit as the large speaker chambers occupy that space below. I think capacitive buttons would have been better.
Admiral_Awesome yeah, I know. But still, if they had managed to free that space for some screen, the device would've been even more awesome. But that's all we got for now.
Why isn't the built in amplifier for headphones not marketed more? That is a huge selling feature, that many people use. Everyone I know that uses headphones has them at full blast all the time... normal phones can barely power headphones to their max potential. This is a big deal!
I currently have the m7 and can't decide if I should upgrade to the m9 or not.. I love my m7. It's even blue, my fave color! Not sure if I should upgrade to the m9 or galaxy s6.
Kylene Lingad Camera is bad on low light other stuff's are amazing on m9 especially build quality and speaker's. Htc sense skin is fun and customiseble. After longer usage phone is not laggy and if you have some issues just do factory reset and it will be nice phone for at least 4 years. Galaxy s6 is also nice but m9 looks more simple and s6 is to shiny and glass will easily crack after droping phone.
I think that only Apple can get away with the incremental update cycle and it will seriously hurt HTC not having pushed for more. It will be a tough sell to consumers wanting to upgrade to a 2015 flagship to pick the HTC One M8S rather than the Galaxy S6 (or the G4 or Z4....).
Great review but makes me feel kind of sad the results of the camera. I wonder if can be improved by the software or is just matter of the sensor itself.
i bought the phone , made the switch from iphone and im glad i did , screen is much better 1080 is enough we dont need more , battery v good , very fast phone with no lag , you can handle the phone perfect for gaming plus boom sound its a killer . Best phone on the market period. Camera is good , not amazing .
Michael reviews are always outstanding!
Why can't HTC get a all around great camera??? I own an M7 too and I feel the same way. I'm gonna go with the Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge for my upgrade this year
I agree! I'm so disappointed with the camera of my M7 and it really annoys me. No HTC for me this year.
Alan Wang Yeah me too
Thomas Vanhelden Same here.
Thomas Vanhelden Get a Z3,or an iphone 6 if you want the best camera

Yeah boycott 810 devices and just wait for the 820.
There isnt much different comparing the m8 and m9. The camera is still so so. This is like m8s.
Samsung this year step up everything.
have you not seen some of the M9's units under review they are getting around a 3 hour on screen time before dieing from the 810
***** Lol, same profile picture. Except mine has my actual face photoshopped in.
***** My M7 got hot under the same circumstances, the issues of overheating were mostly due to badly optimised code I am pretty sure.
This can't be coincidence Pocketnow, Techno Buffalo, and the verge all posted the m9 reviews at exactly 8:00 E.S.T.
The review embargoes lifted.
Android authority and others posted their M9 review at the same time
Actually android authority posted there's 45 mins later

The9K It should be a superphone. In this market you can't just take a year off like HTC did. The competition is fierce.
The9K The M7 to the M8 the M8 to the M9 and if people didn't get upset then it would probably be the M10 too.

Is it me or does it seem like Sense has gotten a bit more intrusive? What with the home screen, lock screen and blinkfeed.
It's always had those, since Sense 5.
Not the home screen app suggestions and lock screen suggestions. Blinkfeed yes, I had that on the M7.
Anton Dillard you can remove it. It is a widget
Anton Dillard I'm pretty sure you can turn that off.

I can't find review better than Michael's review. Thanks captain
I thought that at the end of this video I would have decided whether I wanted the HTC M9 or not but all I can think about now is buying an IR-Thermometer.
An informative and well constructed video as always *****
Michael Fisher is rocking the "Peter Pan Rufio" look at the beginning of this video! lol
Probably my favorite review thus far. Thanks a lot. I feel sold on picking this thing up with my upgrade now!
Thank you for adjusting the intro music much better
I currently own the M8. If HTC had made significant strides with improving the camera, I would have upgraded; however, I can't justify upgrading to a newer model with a camera that's just as hit-and-miss as the one I currently own, as much as I would appreciate the extra resolution.

Hahaha, the face swap with Michael and Joshua Vergara was hilarious!
The camera UI with a more vertical version of Lumia Camera, that's the new UI or is it a third party app?
Looks amazing.
Liked your review, as usual.
Bit disappointed in the camera though, and the battery life doesn't seem as spectacular as I would have expected.
Michael, You forgot about the water resistance feature in the M9, i really wanted to see how it is in action ! Great review tho :)
What are you talking about?
Jason Booth the M9 has a water splash proof just like the M8
Muath Alfawzan it's not water resistant. It's got an ipx3 rating for rain or splashes. Same as the m8.
Didn't forget it; mentioned it in our first hands-on from Barcelona and it's covered in the written review as well (pocketnow.com/2015/03/22/htc-one-m9-review). Videos can only be so long! ^M

You are 1 hell of a narrator/reviewer man good job, interesting till the very end
You guys are way more positive about this phone than other reviewers. I heard de viewing angles, contrast and brightness of the screen are worse than on the m8
Best M9 review I have seen yet. Loving the quality content as always guys!

+CountZero78 I think thats the deal with all the phones after a while
That Joshua Vergara+Michael Fisher fusion tho
The ultimate reviewer? :P
You can pin apps in the Sense app widget so they don't shift anymore. Just press and hold till it's pinned.
I'm currently owning a m7. It's good, but after the lollipop update it's been a tad bit slow for my taste, multitasking is slow now, app launching, etc too but the absolute main reason I'm upgrading is because if the camera.

As usual Informational and Insightful.. Best Reviewer on the planet!!
HTC and nexus devices, the best Android phone I love and I would recommended to other people

Excellent review once again Fisher! Looking forward to you reviewing the Galaxy S6!
the camera is actually pretty good. i was expecting a lot worse. hopefully there will be a patch for the focus
your reviews are always satisfying to view. thanks for sharing

Do you think software updates could fix the camera issues?
I like the way you say 'detail'
Ooo, we already have Sense 7 for the One M8 for a few days, it's awesome!
Not bad. I'm not mad at ***** for this move. If it ain't broke, no need to fix it. Glad they stuck with the 1080p resolution as well. Despite what others may think, 2k makes NO SENSE (there may be a pun in there somewhere)!

I have the m9 and upgraded from the m7 and showed my bro who has the m8. he told me great choice!
This phone looks dope!! Can’t wait to get my hands on it asap

I think I'm going to upgrade from my m7, I'm thinking I may miss the stunning low light performance of my m7, but this is one thing I'm willing to put aside.
Good review, I'll keep my M8 for another year.
There's a possibility HTC will release an update for the camera
Tiliting my head for another phone with butter camera. Could be LG G4. Or even G3 after few months. Right now, my 1+ still does an amazing work.
Fisher is the best reviewer out there.
I have an HTC one M8 and I was hesitating to update for M9 but after the review naah I will wait for the M9+ with 2k display and the finger print scanner

Very interesting! Very glad for the great breakdown of the phone. One of the main things I was interested in on this phone.
love my m9, camera is fine, 5.1 update fixes some things and has the phone running so damn smooth
Bird Man and the lock button is actually placed in a very nice location, once you get used to it, it's location is quite pleasant
+Bird Man did you just react to yourself on purpose to confuse other people which gives u a nice trolly feeling?
Yep , you guessed it, great job man give yourself a pat on the back MCB400100

Last time Mike Fisher did an HTC flagship for Pocketnow... The HTC 10 review was after he went solo...

The device looks incredibly incredible, but I would've loved to see "more screen" in the place where the HTC logo is situated.
Is that clock widget with a slashed separator a stock or it's some kind of widget up ?
That's one of the new Sense clocks available with certain themes. ^M
Pocketnow I see ! Thanks :)

Waaw . that camera app and effects software is amazing ..
So the M9 is more camera software features than the hardware it self..
I never thought a 20mp camera could be bad until the M9 came out. Jesus Christ...
His voice is bloody amazing
I'd love seeing your line-up of phones at 1:45 ..I wish I can do that too..
Both are great cell phones.. I have both... And yes,,it's like everything, both had their up and downs... Overall, I would say 50 and 50
I think that only Apple can get away with the incremental update cycle and it will seriously hurt HTC not having pushed for more. It will be a tough sell to consumers wanting to upgrade to a 2015 flagship to pick the HTC One M8S rather than the Galaxy S6 (or the G4 or Z4....).
his voice is very soothing
Great review but makes me feel kind of sad the results of the camera. I wonder if can be improved by the software or is just matter of the sensor itself.
i bought the phone , made the switch from iphone and im glad i did , screen is much better 1080 is enough we dont need more , battery v good , very fast phone with no lag , you can handle the phone perfect for gaming plus boom sound its a killer . Best phone on the market period. Camera is good , not amazing .
Would love to see a comparison between the one m9 and m9 plus.
