    Attention Michael Fisher, I have discovered something very important about this camera that people need to know and especially you reviewers. There is a supposed protective film that comes on the main camera lens. It's really prone to scratching however it can be removed but most importantly once removed it increases the resolution dramatically. We've been discussing this in the HTC M8 group on Google social. Everyone that's removed it says the same thing. It makes it look just as good as the s5 mega pixel shooter. It normally cast a slight haze that's very notice when it's removed. My lens looked really scratched after using alcohol some use toothpaste or nail polish remover and with a little elbow grease you can see it come off. As I say the effects are irrefutable and this needs a video. Thanks Chris Enlightened.

      it lasts a good while. right now my phone has gone 18hrs on battery and is on 14%. Part of that was over night though but when I left my iPhone 5 like that it would be nearly dead when I woke up. you can easy get a full day of usage and more out of one of these things. I no longer have to worry about going out if my phone isn't on 100% because I know it will last. extreme power save mode is a life savour if you're really low but still need to be able to call or text. I don't know how I put up with having to charge my old phone at least twice a day if I used it for more than checking the time. just put this one on charge while you sleep and you can just about guarantee you won't need to again until night time unless you use it constantly for hours and hours.

      100% AGREED!

    • @LoneWolfAQWorldsAlt
      @LoneWolfAQWorldsAlt 10 лет назад

      Nope . I don't mind HTC's SENSE or samsung's touchwiz..just the design of S5 is a bit different..edges aren't than rounded like in GS3..camera is *A LOT* better..and I like that it's waterproof..also i like that ultra saving mode..:D So yeah..in my opinion the only thing in which m8 is better than GS5 and M7 is the front camera..:/(and aluminium built vs plastic s5)..
      I still don't have "smartphone" and I'm thinking of what to buy..I wanted m7 then I heard about m8 and i started wanted it ,but that ugly design..and price..made me to search for other phone..and now i'm considering between LG G2 and HTC One(m7) but probably I'll get G2 ,because it's cheaper(at least here) and has better battery,cpu etc..only disappointment of g2 is that it's made of shit fingerprint magnet plastic..but i'll get over it.. :D

    thanks for a proper review. most other tech sites have given choppy hands-on reviews to us. thanks for taking the time to put some thought into it. anyway, i'm glad they slammed a killer processor in it and increased the size of the screen.... but they also increased the overall size of the phone, like the GS5. basically, phones should be evolving more like TVs...into TVs. i want minimal bezels with maximum display. boomsound? great, thanks. four ultrapixel camera? no thanks. give me last year's One cam with OIS at least. otherwise, give us the cam in the newest Desire phone. kind of a let down. hopefully, G Pro 2 comes to VZW.

    f there was a movie about the rise of smartphones starring actual smartphones as actors, the M8 would star, with Robert Downey Jr. voicing opposite Tom Cruise, cast as the voice of the villainous iPhone6+. With Chris Platt as the plucky but lovable comedy relief, the Galaxy S5. Sean Bean makes a brief cameo as the Moto X, but, no spoilers please.

    Hard to hate on this phone. I don't really see much difference between this and the first version. Both are awesome. This one looks more classy however. What I'd love to see is a new version of my phone, the HTC One S. It never feels like a brick in your pocket.
    Anyway, if the One (M8) gets any classier, I just might consider getting baggier pants or a man purse just to fit it in... Probably not. But fantastic job, HTC, with the new One. You guys did it again. Do it again next year!

      do you want shitty 4mp camera or amazing 20mp camera?
      2600mah battery or 3200mah battery?
      2gm rams or 3gb rams?
      I'm getting the Z2 because I'm not a brand loyal stupid fanboy.

      choose what u wanna get man both are great choices and u can't go wrong with none....but if u wanna wait for the true monster wait for the LG G3 itll probably be the better since it will have the 805 and adreno 420 graphics....but still man can't go wrong cause both are on top of the food chain...if u get the htc one let it be for the build, the speakers, the sense ui feature, and the front 5mp camera....if u get the z2 let it be for the camera, the battery, and waterproofness.....either like i said can't go wrong

      techmaster Yea I'm leaning for the Z2 but I heard it won't be released until the end of the year. That camera on the One is just deal breaker for me. The only reason I didn't get the LG G2 was that it had no expandable memory but I'm guessing they'll put that feature this time around. Either way it seems like the Z2 is the winner for now at least until the G3 comes out

    Picked up the M8 during a great sale at Target over Thanksgiving. The phone is absolutely beautiful, even more so in person, and the display is outstanding. Performance is great and, since I'm not a professional photographer, the camera is just fine for my needs. My only criticism is the nit-pickiest of nit-picking: the screen's motion gestures makes it a pain in the ass to wipe the screen with a cloth. Haha, that's it ;) It's by far the nicest phone I've ever owned.

    htc is doing the right thing with the ultrapixels i think. kind of how apple does with larger pixels and a better sensor instead of jacking up the megapixel count.... if you want to complain about a camera why not say that samsungs 16 MP camera is a weak point since it's basically useless in lowlight ? the phone is so good that they probably had to find something to complain about to appear impartial

    As a longtime HTC fan and former M7 owner (now with a G2 - seriously miss the One, but couldn't take its mediocre camera and battery life any longer), I seriously don't get the hype with the M8.
    The camera doesn't fix much from the M7 - resolution still leaves much to be desired. Perhaps my biggest gripe - imo the phone got quite a bit uglier. HTC made the greedy decision to keep the vestigial black bezel despite moving to onscreen buttons. The brushed aluminum only makes the phone look far more like lower quality glossy/shiny plastic. The front speakers are now asymmetric. And the bezels, in general, are still just ridiculously thick. Sense 6 looks great, but that's coming to the M7 as well.

  • @esaedvik
    @esaedvik 10 лет назад

    Some of the sensors in last year's One's were ST VD6869's that were in short supply and the rest were Omnivision's OV4688's. This M8 has the same sensor as some of last years units, OV4688. So HTC informed you somewhat correctly.

    • @wblake22
      @wblake22 10 лет назад +5

      Look at a review that really get into the specs of this phone. You will learn HTC use ultrapixels, this phone takes better picture than phones with more megapixels

    • @anrgkrshn94
      @anrgkrshn94 10 лет назад +3

      wblake22 Actually, that's not how it works. It's just that, a smaller sensor has larger pixels. MKBHD made a really good video that explains the whole Ultrapixel thing. I don't think the sensor has any special thing to it. It's just smart rebranding. And also, it only supposedly has better LOW LIGHT performance, since the larger pixels allow for more light to be captured. But the performance doesn't seem stellar in low light. So, I'm not really sold.

    • @yogiapprentice8364
      @yogiapprentice8364 10 лет назад

      It's a letdown but you have to understand that the camera is designed for social media where 4mp is perfectly fine.

    • @kcxy1996
      @kcxy1996 10 лет назад +3

      its 4MP not 4UP. ultra pixel is a technology in which the pixel size is larger, letting in more light.

    • @SkyverYT
      @SkyverYT 10 лет назад +1

      You're kidding, right? Just because the camera has "ultrapixel" technology does't mean it has more megapixels. Megapixels determine how large the image is, bigger pixels won't simply enlarge the image lol.
      What is nice about this technology is the low light performance, far better than your standard average phone camera.

    • @kcxy1996
      @kcxy1996 10 лет назад

      im not saying it has more megapixels. what i meant is the pixels are larger resulting in better low light performances. :)

      @rafaelcapricho978 10 лет назад +1

      kcxy1996 but some 13 mp cameras don't do well in low light meaning they could be worse then the camera or better proving your point wrong in the first place. :)

    I really just can't decide between this and the Galaxy S5. Any advice, anyone?

    • @austinlowe5729
      @austinlowe5729 10 лет назад +22

      Design: The S5 actually has better grip/handling than the One and if you play games too long on the One, it'll get hot and, because it's metal, well... You know... But I do think the Metal Htc One is good and I like the cold feel it gives your hand and the plastic just gets your hands hot fast, anyways.
      UI (User Interface): The S5 has a lot more features and you could play around with it for hours, but they're kinda buggy and not complete. Touchwiz isn't the most complete UI. But, HTC has sense and has less features, but a lot more "complete" and less buggy.
      Specs: The S5 has a better processer and better video card (People are gonna say no, they're the same video card. Yes, it is the same model but different make, one is AB and the other is AC. There's a difference in speed in favor of the S5). But, because of the UI, you might actually find that the HTC is faster due to the better UI. HTC has 32 GB memory to start (in the US) and the S5 has 16. Both expandable with 128 above starting one. So, the HTC will feel about as fast, if not faster with more memory on it, too.
      Battery: The S5 will typically last longer, and has the larger battery that is also removable. they both have good power saving modes to use in emergencies, but you don't need to worry about battery life on either. If you do, the S5 has a removable battery so you could replace it with another fully charged one
      Camera: The HTC has the much worse camera, not coming close. They have some neat features, but its not powerful enough. But, they has better front-facing camera for them selfies ;) .
      Audio: Of Course, the HTC wins by far
      Resistance to the elements: As you know, the S5 is water resistant and dust resistant. I like this, but what a lot of people don't know is that the One is dust resistant and a little water resistant, but not enough to brag about.
      Opinion: I like the one more because it is more "complete" and has a better UI. I also like the audio and the metal. I am upset over the camera, but because it's still not THAT bad, certainly workable and its not like its impossible to work with, I just hoped for a better camera. Also, it comes with HTC Advantage, allowing you to replace your broken screen for free if within the first 6 months of the phones life for 1 time. I also really like the blinkfeed. S5 has their version, called my magazine, but is very buggy and slow. I don't think it's that good.The fingerprint scanner on the S5 isn't that good, and most people like to toggle it off due to it being so hard to use and have to be under perfect conditions to work. I hope I was of some help, I had the same issue and I spent countless hours looking at videos trying to figure out every detail in difference.

      Erick Tavares And really the idea is you dont need to change the battery, most people have a phone for a couple of years then change it. If your battery goes in that time frame then you've got a crap phone, hence why you can do with the samsung and not the htc

      ***** Some people who have to always have their phone on at work is perfect for swappable batteries. It's not only there if your battery becomes dead. Sure, I prefer HTC, LG, Sony over Samsung, but removable batteries have their uses. I wish that these companies all had removable batteries on their phones.

      yeah I know but I like to prevent "bad situations" when buying a phone for this price. So in case the battery dies, or image, other batteries go out on the market that are better than the original, I like in that case be able to change it easily

      Honestly I have a very old 4MP point and shoot, and it takes *MUCH* better quality photos that does the 8MP camera on my S3, let alone the 5MP one on my tablet.
      The higher the MP, the larger the file size, and since the sensor size inside phones is tiny, the puny pixels on the sensor die will be noisy, leading to a grainier image. Ideally, the sensor die should be made bigger so the pixels on it are larger, but HTC has decided to trade in a few of those pixels in favor for relatively larger pixels, less prone to noise. As an added bonus, more pictures can fit in an SD card too!

      Randhy Sánchez What are you talking about they're 4mp, a single zoom and you'll have nothing to show for on that gorgeous 1080p, plus its common nowadays to print out your photos specially family pics, the guy is into photography and as such 4mp is unacceptable in anyway, this is not saying that the M8 isn't a great phone nonetheless just not a photographer's weapon of choice for moment notice photos.

    • @samcarlin2706
      @samcarlin2706 10 лет назад

      Why does everyone keep saying 4 'megapixel'. It's a 4 'ultrapixel' camera. Do you really think in 2014 on a flagship phone they'd actually get away with a 4 'megapixel' camera? Like Randhy said, don't knock it until you've tried it... The camera reviews i've seen have said it's a pretty good camera. It's not as good as the 16 megapixel camera on the Galaxy S5, but it still does a pretty decent job and don't forget about the 5mp front facing camera for all your selfie or video calling needs. Either way, I really don't believe there's enough innovation within this HTC to be able to compete with other phones. HTC are relying on their design to gain sales. When you think the S5 has included features such as IP67 certified, fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor, you have to wonder what else makes this HTC stand out, other than it's design. We also know the iPhone 6 will come with some pretty awesome new innovation no doubt, so HTC haven't really done anything special enough to be able to live up to the outstanding reputation of the HTC One (M7)

    • @Bobbyleebudde
      @Bobbyleebudde 10 лет назад +3

      Sam Carlin It don't matter if it's ultra pixels or not there are so only 4. They could be 10xs the size of a regular pixel but still only 4 detail when zooming in will not happen the pics will only look good on that device sorry still only 4 pixels

    • @samcarlin2706
      @samcarlin2706 10 лет назад

      Still 4 pixels, but the pixels are bigger and let more light in. So it's still different to a 4 'megapixel'.

    • @nabkawe
      @nabkawe 10 лет назад +3

      Randhy Sánchez I say get over yourself and stop hating on gays, Ultra Pixels or not 4MP is too little, never took a photo of someone and immediately zoomed in on his face? well you can't on that one, I'm not looking for that 41mp zoom or that 20mp zoom, just the 8mp zoom would suffice, but NOPE and as such this camera cannot pass for a photographer ( YOU IDIOT READ THE WORD "PHOTOGRAPHER" IT IS PASSABLE FOR NORMAL PEOPLE SUCH AS YOURSELF.)

    I love my M7 and when my upgrade comes around I will look at all the offerings, but I'm sure I will probably get the M8. Premium build, BlinkFeed, BoomSound, and this Duo Camera/Zoe features fit my phone usage profile well. My M7 battery gets me through my day, the money I spent on a Mophie was a waste, but the battery life on the M8 is 40% better! Also love the Extreme Battery Power Saver mode, very functional for when I'm irresponsible with my power management. Honestly you can get wrapped up all around in specs, but for my use my HTC One is awesome and just fits me. My lone con with the M8 is I too would have like to have seen a jump in MP, but I'm not a photographer and the camera in my M7 does fine capturing life's moments for me. I think HTC has come a long way with the last 2 year's offerings and I hope that they can keep making great quality devices that I believe are unique and very functional.

    Bought one of these recently to replace my Galaxy S3.
    Didn't really consider the S5, as a friend of mine had one, and it was just so sluggish with TouchWiz. I probably would have put Cyanogenmod on it within half an hour of owning it, but had been a previous HTC user and decided to give it another go.
    I'm glad I did, it's a great phone. Sense is just so smooth on this. It doesn't overbear you with heaps of bloatware that tends to be on manufacturer ROMs in order to give a sense of their own touch. I don't see myself rooting/ROMing this at all.
    I haven't really played much with the camera, but I don't have a problem with it. I'm not exactly a photographer, and the shots are clear enough for my liking.
    The build quality is great on this phone. Obviously, coming from an S3, it wasn't the highest priority on my list, but it's an added bonus.
    I did think it looked a little washed out with the colours at first, but after using it for a bit, I realised that they are vivid, it's just that the S3 is incredibly saturated.
    I've always thought that the speakers on the front of the device was actually a brilliant idea when the first One came out, but now after hearing it in person, it's amazing. No more having to cup my hand around the phone.
    Impressed with the battery life too. Unplugged at 6am, got to 9pm with a normal days worth of messaging, social media, games etc with 50% battery left. Much better than my S3, even after I got a new battery for it.
    I'm just hoping that it won't degrade too badly over time.
    If HTC keep this up, I'll continue to buy their gear.

    FYI i just used the phone at verizon.. the on-screen buttons take up 15% of the screens web browser.. fucking fail.. i dont care how good the phone is.. the reason why you get a big phoone is to have big glorious web pages amongst other things..
    and losing that much real-estate is in my opinion udder bullshit.

    By going through the review of Fisher Sir I had dropped Note 3 and brought New HTC M8...and surprisingly I have no regrets about this device. Feeling like a knife in butter...Very sharp/very smooth and totally lag free device. I am very big fan of Snapdragon devices. Note3 international version was laggy as per my experience.
    Thanks for very fair review. I always believe you and your reviews because they are totally free and fair.
    Thanks once again

    Looking forward to getting my new HTC One (M8) on Vodafone Australia Network at the end of next week. Like the new wake up gestures and of course the speakers. Not too worried about the camera. Very excited and thanks for a great review.

    Very informative review Mike and Pocketnow! Quick question, did you guys get a chance to test the sound quality/performance when a head-phone jack is connected to any decent head/ear-phones? Is it like the HTC One or better?
    Lastly (unrelated question) whats the name of the Soundtrack on minute 6:40?
    Thanks! :)

    My M8 arrives tomorrow to replace my iPhone 5S. I have no complaints about the 5S, or even iOS, but I'm starting to find it dull after 6 years of iPhone usage.
    Like any other iPhone user switching to this, the camera is a slight concern, but it doesn't look bad. I'm hoping the larger screen, and freedom of Android will compensate.
