Attention Michael Fisher, I have discovered something very important about this camera that people need to know and especially you reviewers. There is a supposed protective film that comes on the main camera lens. It's really prone to scratching however it can be removed but most importantly once removed it increases the resolution dramatically. We've been discussing this in the HTC M8 group on Google social. Everyone that's removed it says the same thing. It makes it look just as good as the s5 mega pixel shooter. It normally cast a slight haze that's very notice when it's removed. My lens looked really scratched after using alcohol some use toothpaste or nail polish remover and with a little elbow grease you can see it come off. As I say the effects are irrefutable and this needs a video. Thanks Chris Enlightened.
it lasts a good while. right now my phone has gone 18hrs on battery and is on 14%. Part of that was over night though but when I left my iPhone 5 like that it would be nearly dead when I woke up. you can easy get a full day of usage and more out of one of these things. I no longer have to worry about going out if my phone isn't on 100% because I know it will last. extreme power save mode is a life savour if you're really low but still need to be able to call or text. I don't know how I put up with having to charge my old phone at least twice a day if I used it for more than checking the time. just put this one on charge while you sleep and you can just about guarantee you won't need to again until night time unless you use it constantly for hours and hours.
as usual HTC offer a device that makes my "Must Have IT" bug go crazy, i cant imagine not having this in my collection, i just have to work out how to budget for its inclusion into my desk of devices.
***** So in other words, you like Touchwiz better. Besides the camera and resistance, the GS5 does nothing better, and it doesn't even look as good as the GS3.
Nope . I don't mind HTC's SENSE or samsung's touchwiz..just the design of S5 is a bit different..edges aren't than rounded like in GS3..camera is *A LOT* better..and I like that it's waterproof..also i like that ultra saving mode..:D So yeah..in my opinion the only thing in which m8 is better than GS5 and M7 is the front camera..:/(and aluminium built vs plastic s5).. I still don't have "smartphone" and I'm thinking of what to buy..I wanted m7 then I heard about m8 and i started wanted it ,but that ugly design..and price..made me to search for other phone..and now i'm considering between LG G2 and HTC One(m7) but probably I'll get G2 ,because it's cheaper(at least here) and has better battery, cpu etc..only disappointment of g2 is that it's made of shit fingerprint magnet plastic..but i'll get over it.. :D
My first smartphone was an Iphone 4s, then i got my htc one and fell in love with it... Its simply the best phone they desighned and from now on, il be buying htc one variants every 2-3 years!
I'm seriously going to buy one of these, I can finally stick a 128GB micro SDXC card and put my entire music library on it and not have to be stuck streaming just a fraction of my music :D
Thank you Michael for this great review. I purchased the M8 recently and did not get a proper tutorial and was beginning to reconsider the purchase. This has eased my stress and absolutely taught me how to have a better relationship with my phone. :) Excited about all of the great features. I'm coming from an iPhone 5 and am happy about the swap.
I will be receiving my new M8 in 3 days. I was going to order the M7 last Friday and she said "Wait!, there's a new one coming out". I can hardly wait to get it. This is my first upgrade in 3 years and I'm excited about the Quad Core processing. I run my business off my phone so this seems like the perfect choice for me.
Design: The S5 actually has better grip/handling than the One and if you play games too long on the One, it'll get hot and, because it's metal, well... You know... But I do think the Metal Htc One is good and I like the cold feel it gives your hand and the plastic just gets your hands hot fast, anyways. UI (User Interface): The S5 has a lot more features and you could play around with it for hours, but they're kinda buggy and not complete. Touchwiz isn't the most complete UI. But, HTC has sense and has less features, but a lot more "complete" and less buggy. Specs: The S5 has a better processer and better video card (People are gonna say no, they're the same video card. Yes, it is the same model but different make, one is AB and the other is AC. There's a difference in speed in favor of the S5). But, because of the UI, you might actually find that the HTC is faster due to the better UI. HTC has 32 GB memory to start (in the US) and the S5 has 16. Both expandable with 128 above starting one. So, the HTC will feel about as fast, if not faster with more memory on it, too. Battery: The S5 will typically last longer, and has the larger battery that is also removable. they both have good power saving modes to use in emergencies, but you don't need to worry about battery life on either. If you do, the S5 has a removable battery so you could replace it with another fully charged one Camera: The HTC has the much worse camera, not coming close. They have some neat features, but its not powerful enough. But, they has better front-facing camera for them selfies ;) . Audio: Of Course, the HTC wins by far Resistance to the elements: As you know, the S5 is water resistant and dust resistant. I like this, but what a lot of people don't know is that the One is dust resistant and a little water resistant, but not enough to brag about. Opinion: I like the one more because it is more "complete" and has a better UI. I also like the audio and the metal. I am upset over the camera, but because it's still not THAT bad, certainly workable and its not like its impossible to work with, I just hoped for a better camera. Also, it comes with HTC Advantage, allowing you to replace your broken screen for free if within the first 6 months of the phones life for 1 time. I also really like the blinkfeed. S5 has their version, called my magazine, but is very buggy and slow. I don't think it's that good. The fingerprint scanner on the S5 isn't that good, and most people like to toggle it off due to it being so hard to use and have to be under perfect conditions to work. I hope I was of some help, I had the same issue and I spent countless hours looking at videos trying to figure out every detail in difference.
The HTC has less of a grip.... but its a nice metal, and its a better eye-catcher. I'm going to grab one Wednesday, my gf has it, and I have a Note 3. I prefer the HTC, because you do not want Touchwiz LOL
Hard to hate on this phone. I don't really see much difference between this and the first version. Both are awesome. This one looks more classy however. What I'd love to see is a new version of my phone, the HTC One S. It never feels like a brick in your pocket. Anyway, if the One (M8) gets any classier, I just might consider getting baggier pants or a man purse just to fit it in... Probably not. But fantastic job, HTC, with the new One. You guys did it again. Do it again next year!
f there was a movie about the rise of smartphones starring actual smartphones as actors, the M8 would star, with Robert Downey Jr. voicing opposite Tom Cruise, cast as the voice of the villainous iPhone6+. With Chris Platt as the plucky but lovable comedy relief, the Galaxy S5. Sean Bean makes a brief cameo as the Moto X, but, no spoilers please.
Picked up the M8 during a great sale at Target over Thanksgiving. The phone is absolutely beautiful, even more so in person, and the display is outstanding. Performance is great and, since I'm not a professional photographer, the camera is just fine for my needs. My only criticism is the nit-pickiest of nit-picking: the screen's motion gestures makes it a pain in the ass to wipe the screen with a cloth. Haha, that's it ;) It's by far the nicest phone I've ever owned.
Just ordered my m8 yesterday. I have the m7 now and love everything about it except the lacking micro sd card slot. I never had any issue with the m7 4 mega pixel camera so I'm sure ill be happy with the m8 as well. You simply can't compare other brands in build quality. Thanks HTC! And thanks for the great reviews!
Really torn between this phone and the Lg G3. Watched some reviews of the G3 and was very disappointed by how dark and dingy the screen was despite being QHD.
+axamsa I went for the M8 and I've been using it for almost a year now. Great phone. I've had no issues whatsoever. Hardware is lovely and Android runs fast and reliably. If you want my advice, get the HTC mate:)
It's been two months since I have my HTC one and I love it. The phone calls are much clearer, excellent sound and just a gorgeous phone overall. I do agree the camera mode needs improvement but that is not a deal breaker..
By far the best looking Android phone out there. If it wasn't for the camera I would get it in a heartbeat. Kinda torn if I should get the One or Xperia Z2 when it comes out
Simply questions: do you want shitty 4mp camera or amazing 20mp camera? 2600mah battery or 3200mah battery? 2gm rams or 3gb rams? I'm getting the Z2 because I'm not a brand loyal stupid fanboy.
choose what u wanna get man both are great choices and u can't go wrong with none....but if u wanna wait for the true monster wait for the LG G3 itll probably be the better since it will have the 805 and adreno 420 graphics....but still man can't go wrong cause both are on top of the food chain...if u get the htc one let it be for the build, the speakers, the sense ui feature, and the front 5mp camera....if u get the z2 let it be for the camera, the battery, and waterproofness.....either like i said can't go wrong
***** Just because i said the One is the best looking android doesn't mean I'm a fanboy dumbass. I get devices based on what they offer not what brand they are.
techmaster Yea I'm leaning for the Z2 but I heard it won't be released until the end of the year. That camera on the One is just deal breaker for me. The only reason I didn't get the LG G2 was that it had no expandable memory but I'm guessing they'll put that feature this time around. Either way it seems like the Z2 is the winner for now at least until the G3 comes out
i wanted to get an htc one since it came out, but just let too much time go by before i did. i ordered my m8 as soon as i saw it went up on my carrier website. i cant wait!
Erick Tavares And really the idea is you dont need to change the battery, most people have a phone for a couple of years then change it. If your battery goes in that time frame then you've got a crap phone, hence why you can do with the samsung and not the htc
***** Some people who have to always have their phone on at work is perfect for swappable batteries. It's not only there if your battery becomes dead. Sure, I prefer HTC, LG, Sony over Samsung, but removable batteries have their uses. I wish that these companies all had removable batteries on their phones.
yeah I know but I like to prevent "bad situations" when buying a phone for this price. So in case the battery dies, or image, other batteries go out on the market that are better than the original, I like in that case be able to change it easily
How did it excite you? Nothing about this phone was exciting, and I love HTC. Plus, it was leaked to the point where everyone knew what it had months prior to the event.
1300l If that's what excited you then you should have been excited about the S5 as well, arguably they kept what was good on the S4 and improved on it as well. It may not be the best looking phone ever though.
CrImSoN HuNtEr I see that device, the only thing i like is the 2K display, personaly ill wait for the next nexus with 2k display, but i have to admit i had low expectation to this M8 and i actualy like it.
@4:34 The on-screen buttons do not make sense if they are going to have a useless bezel at the bottom for an HTC logo. Shorter the phone up by getting rid of that and put the buttons on screen or use it for three capacitive buttons and save screen space. It is already going to be a tall phone with the Boomsound speakers; personally I find it to be a design flaw when looking at other manufacturers who are able to release 5 inch display devices that are more easily manageable in one hand.
You're kidding, right? Just because the camera has "ultrapixel" technology does't mean it has more megapixels. Megapixels determine how large the image is, bigger pixels won't simply enlarge the image lol. What is nice about this technology is the low light performance, far better than your standard average phone camera.
kcxy1996 but some 13 mp cameras don't do well in low light meaning they could be worse then the camera or better proving your point wrong in the first place. :)
Gorgeous piece of hardware, the sample pictures do not look all that terrible to me, I wish that it had a little better quality than the Iphone, nice review.
By going through the review of Fisher Sir I had dropped Note 3 and brought New HTC M8...and surprisingly I have no regrets about this device. Feeling like a knife in butter...Very sharp/very smooth and totally lag free device. I am very big fan of Snapdragon devices. Note3 international version was laggy as per my experience. Thanks for very fair review. I always believe you and your reviews because they are totally free and fair. Thanks once again
thanks for a proper review. most other tech sites have given choppy hands-on reviews to us. thanks for taking the time to put some thought into it. anyway, i'm glad they slammed a killer processor in it and increased the size of the screen.... but they also increased the overall size of the phone, like the GS5. basically, phones should be evolving more like TVs...into TVs. i want minimal bezels with maximum display. boomsound? great, thanks. four ultrapixel camera? no thanks. give me last year's One cam with OIS at least. otherwise, give us the cam in the newest Desire phone. kind of a let down. hopefully, G Pro 2 comes to VZW.
htc is doing the right thing with the ultrapixels i think. kind of how apple does with larger pixels and a better sensor instead of jacking up the megapixel count.... if you want to complain about a camera why not say that samsungs 16 MP camera is a weak point since it's basically useless in lowlight ? the phone is so good that they probably had to find something to complain about to appear impartial
at first i didnt like the look of the m8 but after seeing pocketnow's review video i think the brushed metal design of the m8 is a beauty. is it just me or pocketnow reviewers are film-lighting experts?
Hmm the camera is really a letdown. 4MP is really below market standard in 2014. Beyond 8MP or more consumers can't really tell the difference, but 4MP is a deal-breaker
Look at a review that really get into the specs of this phone. You will learn HTC use ultrapixels, this phone takes better picture than phones with more megapixels
wblake22 Actually, that's not how it works. It's just that, a smaller sensor has larger pixels. MKBHD made a really good video that explains the whole Ultrapixel thing. I don't think the sensor has any special thing to it. It's just smart rebranding. And also, it only supposedly has better LOW LIGHT performance, since the larger pixels allow for more light to be captured. But the performance doesn't seem stellar in low light. So, I'm not really sold.
looking at comparison shots, the m8 4mp camera really holds its own against the competitors, u should definitely check out some videos where they do comparison shots against the iphone 5s. even I was shocked to see how well it performs
If u were using Samsung before, take the S5 ! It is maybe another class of design, but you will be impressed by its performing. Probably its not surpassable this year again.
Honestly I have a very old 4MP point and shoot, and it takes *MUCH* better quality photos that does the 8MP camera on my S3, let alone the 5MP one on my tablet. The higher the MP, the larger the file size, and since the sensor size inside phones is tiny, the puny pixels on the sensor die will be noisy, leading to a grainier image. Ideally, the sensor die should be made bigger so the pixels on it are larger, but HTC has decided to trade in a few of those pixels in favor for relatively larger pixels, less prone to noise. As an added bonus, more pictures can fit in an SD card too!
Because it is going on sale today itself, I think that is why there were so many leaks, cos HTC already had given away devices to carriers and reviewers so that when they launch it you can get it immediately rather than having to wait months. Kudos to HTC.
As a longtime HTC fan and former M7 owner (now with a G2 - seriously miss the One, but couldn't take its mediocre camera and battery life any longer), I seriously don't get the hype with the M8. The camera doesn't fix much from the M7 - resolution still leaves much to be desired. Perhaps my biggest gripe - imo the phone got quite a bit uglier. HTC made the greedy decision to keep the vestigial black bezel despite moving to onscreen buttons. The brushed aluminum only makes the phone look far more like lower quality glossy/shiny plastic. The front speakers are now asymmetric. And the bezels, in general, are still just ridiculously thick. Sense 6 looks great, but that's coming to the M7 as well.
So just cause the camera is good but not great this phone sucks ? People are so spoiled , do you realize the the technology in this phone ? Fuck a camera it's has the best specs out right now for a flagship , the design , the software & hardware are perfect , just cause of a camera ya can't be serious , this phone is 10 times better than a galaxy I have an s4 right now ya buggin
Ivan Batista I'm fine with the 4mpx on my M7 because I don't use it for serious photos. Snapping a pic of something funny on the street and uploading to social media etc. Anyone who wants good photos should grab a real camera not a smartphone.
Some of the sensors in last year's One's were ST VD6869's that were in short supply and the rest were Omnivision's OV4688's. This M8 has the same sensor as some of last years units, OV4688. So HTC informed you somewhat correctly.
Yea me too mate,,,,, my last 3 phones were samsung manufactured and I really want to try something different this time which was suppose to be the m8. But that camera really is a deal breaker for me. This sucks!
berfu91 I suppose that could be the case. It certainly makes sense. But if that is the reason, then just give me regular pixels because I honestly don't see where the Ultra Pixels are really paying off, and from what I have read, neither do the reviewers.
Randhy Sánchez What are you talking about they're 4mp, a single zoom and you'll have nothing to show for on that gorgeous 1080p, plus its common nowadays to print out your photos specially family pics, the guy is into photography and as such 4mp is unacceptable in anyway, this is not saying that the M8 isn't a great phone nonetheless just not a photographer's weapon of choice for moment notice photos.
Why does everyone keep saying 4 'megapixel'. It's a 4 'ultrapixel' camera. Do you really think in 2014 on a flagship phone they'd actually get away with a 4 'megapixel' camera? Like Randhy said, don't knock it until you've tried it... The camera reviews i've seen have said it's a pretty good camera. It's not as good as the 16 megapixel camera on the Galaxy S5, but it still does a pretty decent job and don't forget about the 5mp front facing camera for all your selfie or video calling needs. Either way, I really don't believe there's enough innovation within this HTC to be able to compete with other phones. HTC are relying on their design to gain sales. When you think the S5 has included features such as IP67 certified, fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor, you have to wonder what else makes this HTC stand out, other than it's design. We also know the iPhone 6 will come with some pretty awesome new innovation no doubt, so HTC haven't really done anything special enough to be able to live up to the outstanding reputation of the HTC One (M7)
Sam Carlin It don't matter if it's ultra pixels or not there are so only 4. They could be 10xs the size of a regular pixel but still only 4 detail when zooming in will not happen the pics will only look good on that device sorry still only 4 pixels
Randhy Sánchez I say get over yourself and stop hating on gays, Ultra Pixels or not 4MP is too little, never took a photo of someone and immediately zoomed in on his face? well you can't on that one, I'm not looking for that 41mp zoom or that 20mp zoom, just the 8mp zoom would suffice, but NOPE and as such this camera cannot pass for a photographer ( YOU IDIOT READ THE WORD "PHOTOGRAPHER" IT IS PASSABLE FOR NORMAL PEOPLE SUCH AS YOURSELF.)
My M8 arrives tomorrow to replace my iPhone 5S. I have no complaints about the 5S, or even iOS, but I'm starting to find it dull after 6 years of iPhone usage. Like any other iPhone user switching to this, the camera is a slight concern, but it doesn't look bad. I'm hoping the larger screen, and freedom of Android will compensate.
I got mine in gun metal gray from Verizon. It's my first smart phone and love it. Waiting for my UAG "Ice" case (the case is see through to show off the ONE).
I've had the m8 for about two weeks . I love it !!!! Movies are awesome beautiful picture loud clear sound . Grate battery life . I have no complaints about the camera I enjoy it, lots of choices to make on it . Can't go wrong with this phone .
GUESS WHAT EVERYONE I TAKE TONS OF FUCKING PICS WITH MY M8 AND THEY COME OUT AMAZING. EVERYONE SAYING THE CAMERA IS A DEAL BREAKER ARE FUCKING CLUELESS. TELL ME HOW I JUST PHOTOGRAPHED AN ENTIRE WEDDING AND MADE A ZOE FUCKING AMAZING PICS AND VIDEO NO OTHER PHONE CAN DO. GET A FUCKING CLUE THATS ALL ANYONE CAN SAY ABOUT IT THATS BAD.
Berty Basset he's right though. Yes it doesn't have super high pixels but I've seen some amazing raw images taken from this phone. People need to stop making assumptions by reading a spec sheet. The camera is pretty good.
Sorry for the yelling I was upset. Haha but seriously I've taken some amazing pics. If people didn't know what phone it came from all they would say is holy crap those look incredible.
honestly if you didnt have it all in caps, i would of just skimmed over your comment. but thanks for this - honestly, im not a photographer but i would like a camera that takes nice pics when needed. and from the reviews im seeing, its not that great. i think ppl need to try out the camera before making assumptions. will be trying the camera out in the store soon.
I think Sony could have made the Perfect Smartphone, If only the Z2 had had a 32GB memory (Apps can't be saved on external storage). It would have been Perfect.
my biggest complaint about htc one is the camera the z2 camera is worse. megapixels do matter but its not the only thing. the stabilization is terrible on the z2
I am seriously thinking about jumping from my Moto X to the the HTC One M8. Michael's sharp review has pushed me further toward taking the leap. Question is, should I indulge myself. I don't have a lover to be with on those dark, lonely nights, so maybe I should go for it!
I dont like new s5 design, i do like samsung phones they are pure grunt, power, i use 5s ATM and dont think ill ever go back to apple again, was gonna get s5 but dissapointed, so m8 for me for the next 2 yrs.
I was waiting for S5, but after presentation of M8, i'm confused. Both are nice devices, but HTC seems to improve last years flagship more - compared to S5 from Samsung. And its a pleasure to see first reviews from you guys :) Cheers from Poland.
"..OIS is incompatible with their new approach to photography..". LOL!! Wow, sounds like someone was stubborn (Chou) about implementing this design. Moron!! Just put a damn 13...or 16MP sensor in the camera and be done with it. No one asked you to 're-invent' photography. How many chances has HTC had to blow the competition away but because of blunders and poor, poor business decisions find you now desperate to sell phones. A shame really...
That (chou) gonna kill off htc im sure of it , that guy is moron he had chances to kill all other smart phones but no every time they fuck things up . Still its not vad phone but it could be much better
ImagineCraft7 With that said, that makes this all the more unimaginable how you can duplicate the same camera nobody liked from the previous device. You paid close attention to detail with materials and design but said to hell with the camera...*_smh_*
So HTC had the highest rated phone of 2013 and yet the company is in the red financially.... And they did it again with this phone??!! Oops, looks like another phone the reviewers love yet no one will buy. As far as the phone... All I can say is meh.... More of the same ol'
Reviewers and tech blogs praised the htc one like crazy yet I never saw one in the wild. It's a tough market and I doubt that this year's version will do any better than the last.
they used it for a day or two then they put a review out. thats why. I own Htc one M7. It's a disappointment. Boomsound sounds great but not as loud as they advertise. Ultra pixel is good in low light but the pictures so noisy to the point that I can only view on the phone. Buttons layout is weird and uncomfortable. It takes forever to charge. And it took me 7 months to get Kitkat.
they should have make the gesture features only work if the sensor on the earpiece is not covered since, when it's covered most of the time when it's in your pocket. whereas not on your hands/on a table instead of depending on motion
FYI i just used the phone at verizon.. the on-screen buttons take up 15% of the screens web browser.. fucking fail.. i dont care how good the phone is.. the reason why you get a big phoone is to have big glorious web pages amongst other things.. and losing that much real-estate is in my opinion udder bullshit.
greenrolaids Holy shit dude....not everybody sits on their phones 24/7. At least he has a life and gets away from his phone every so often. Fuck this generation, man.
I love my M7 and when my upgrade comes around I will look at all the offerings, but I'm sure I will probably get the M8. Premium build, BlinkFeed, BoomSound, and this Duo Camera/Zoe features fit my phone usage profile well. My M7 battery gets me through my day, the money I spent on a Mophie was a waste, but the battery life on the M8 is 40% better! Also love the Extreme Battery Power Saver mode, very functional for when I'm irresponsible with my power management. Honestly you can get wrapped up all around in specs, but for my use my HTC One is awesome and just fits me. My lone con with the M8 is I too would have like to have seen a jump in MP, but I'm not a photographer and the camera in my M7 does fine capturing life's moments for me. I think HTC has come a long way with the last 2 year's offerings and I hope that they can keep making great quality devices that I believe are unique and very functional.
I watch alot of Tec review shows and I'm obligated to say I'm very impressed with the presentation of this video. Not only am I going to pick up the HTC One M8 but also going to subscribe!
Check your hangouts :)
Show me the link or show me the video how to do it....
Andrew P the fastest way is use dinner nail polish I did it with alcohol takes bit of work
Chris isEnlightened Ohh okay but i just couldn't find or feel the protective film on camera lenses
Thanks for the tip
Michael Fisher always kills it in the reviews. his voice has such professionalism it's insane
The HTC M8 looks like a pretty awesome smartphone package. Love the enhanced Boomsound speakers.
The phone does have good sound when I played with it. I just hate feel of it. I just don't like metal / aluminum phones.
Just switched from an iPhone 5 to this phone, and I have absolutely no regrets. It's beautiful!
agreed, just upgraded from the iphone 4 which i had for 4 years........absolutely love this fone!
it lasts a good while. right now my phone has gone 18hrs on battery and is on 14%.
I so appreciate your in-depth nonrushed review. Spoken well! Thanks for the hard work!
The M8 will be my next handset! I wanted the M7 but settled for an iPhone 5, but this year i'm leaving Apple and iOS behind and going for the M8! :)
Instablaster.
1st place: Xperia Z2
2nd place: New HTC one
3rd place: Galaxy S5
I'm HTC fan ..but honestly I like GS5 more than M8..
***** So in other words, you like Touchwiz better. Besides the camera and resistance, the GS5 does nothing better, and it doesn't even look as good as the GS3.
100% AGREED!
Nope . Wonderful but I again have to ask why on the odd camera ? When we all use these phones are our daily driver camera we need a better offering.
I feel the same way
If HTC refreshed this with 2020 specs, they'd be getting my money for sure.
I think HTC did more to improve on the M8 than Samsung did with the S5....I still am looking forwards toward the LG G3
I have had my HTC phone now for almost two years and am very satisfied with its overall performance. The M8 looks like a great upgrade for me!!!
Don't mind me, just watching this 8 years later...
I am glad that literally the ONLY bad thing about the phone is the camera. This makes me happy. I cannot decide between GS5 or HTC One
Agreed. I just got it an I cannot believe how great it is!!!
Anthony Turner The OnePlus One is limited. If they're out of stock, they won't produce more.
Why isnt Michael Fisher like GOD BOSS of Pocketnow? Everyone enjoys his reviews more and its obvious he's so good at his job.
One of the best reviews of the One I've come across till now. Informative and to-the-point.
I really just can't decide between this and the Galaxy S5. Any advice, anyone?
If you do, the S5 has a removable battery so you could replace it with another fully charged one
Camera: The HTC has the much worse camera, not coming close. They have some neat features, but its not powerful enough. But, they has better front-facing camera for them selfies ;) .
Audio: Of Course, the HTC wins by far
Resistance to the elements: As you know, the S5 is water resistant and dust resistant.
Austin Lowe Awesome, I appreciate the comparison.
TheAlmightyApe No prob, I have REALLY dived deep into it and I am getting ready to but the HTC One M8. Which one are you thinking about?
Austin Lowe I actually went with the One, and I don't regret it one bit. It's a great phone.
Sounds dumb
Irtisam Islam I know, it's perfect.
Just got mine too yesterday. My M8 is much better than my 5s.
HTC is the absolute best for Android, hands down. I would like to see a Nexus/HTC phone
I believe the first or second nexus phone made was an HTC
Just ordered my m8 yesterday. I have the m7 now and love everything about it except the lacking micro sd card slot. I never had any issue with the m7 4 mega pixel camera so I'm sure ill be happy with the m8 as well. You simply can't compare other brands in build quality. Thanks HTC! And thanks for the great reviews!
I like the design of the M7 much more than the m8
Really torn between this phone and the Lg G3. Watched some reviews of the G3 and was very disappointed by how dark and dingy the screen was despite being QHD.
+gmon78 plz reply what you went it and hows you experience? I;m in the same situation right now. don't know what to buy
Kinda torn if I should get the One or Xperia Z2 when it comes out
Simply questions:
do you want shitty 4mp camera or amazing 20mp camera?
***** Xperia Z2 has a bigger battery than the HTC, but it has to feed a bigger screen and more powerful chipset.
This One is better than the Samsung.
depends on what you value most ;). For example, good luck for changing the battery in the HTC one !
Erick Tavares can't change the battery in my Nexus 5 or that iPhone 5S piece of crap.
So in case the battery dies, or image, other batteries go out on the market that are better than the original, I like in that case be able to change it easily
tested the phone in the shop today. .. The camera pics is actually pretty gd... sound is amazing. .. waiting for gold to be released
The S5 didnt exited me at all, in fact it desapointed me.
I thot the M8 wouldnt exite me... it did tho, gj HTC.
How did it excite you? Nothing about this phone was exciting, and I love HTC. Plus, it was leaked to the point where everyone knew what it had months prior to the event.
4NewHop3
Well for start it keep what was good of the M7, made improvements and most important the SD expansion.
1300l If that's what excited you then you should have been excited about the S5 as well, arguably they kept what was good on the S4 and improved on it as well. It may not be the best looking phone ever though.
check out the oppo find 7 (2k display) but it still isn't good enough though but if the htc one can't dude i don't know what will tbh
CrImSoN HuNtEr
I see that device, the only thing i like is the 2K display, personaly ill wait for the next nexus with 2k display, but i have to admit i had low expectation to this M8 and i actualy like it.
I've read other reviews that mention the speaker amp is located in the bottom bezel. I would've liked a thinner bezel too, but I like BoomSound more.
Why are you saying 4 Mega Pixels?? It's 4 UP.. Ultra Pixels which is equal to a normal 13 Mega Pixel camera.
No it's not. I have an M8 and I love it but the camera sucks.
its 4MP not 4UP. ultra pixel is a technology in which the pixel size is larger, letting in more light.
You're kidding, right? Just because the camera has "ultrapixel" technology does't mean it has more megapixels. Megapixels determine how large the image is, bigger pixels won't simply enlarge the image lol.
What is nice about this technology is the low light performance, far better than your standard average phone camera.
im not saying it has more megapixels. what i meant is the pixels are larger resulting in better low light performances. :)
kcxy1996 but some 13 mp cameras don't do well in low light meaning they could be worse then the camera or better proving your point wrong in the first place. :)
Love your style Michael, really nice review :)
Gorgeous piece of hardware, the sample pictures do not look all that terrible to me, I wish that it had a little better quality than the Iphone, nice review.
Im returning my S5 for the M8. Consistency in day to day activity with no nonsense navigation is the way to go in my book.
Still I'm using HTC M8 hk version.
This was my dream phone back in the days
Nice review! I love the new HTC One M8!
Thanks for the feedback, and the kind words! ^M
Great refinement over the M7 model. I rushed right out to get the M8 after it's launch on 3/25. I love it!
htc is doing the right thing with the ultrapixels i think. kind of how apple does with larger pixels and a better sensor instead of jacking up the megapixel count.... if you want to complain about a camera why not say that samsungs 16 MP camera is a weak point since it's basically useless in lowlight ? the phone is so good that they probably had to find something to complain about to appear impartial
Exarly what i think
at first i didnt like the look of the m8 but after seeing pocketnow's review video i think the brushed metal design of the m8 is a beauty. is it just me or pocketnow reviewers are film-lighting experts?
It's a letdown but you have to understand that the camera is designed for social media where 4mp is perfectly fine.
looking at comparison shots, the m8 4mp camera really holds its own against the competitors, u should definitely check out some videos where they do comparison shots against the iphone 5s. even I was shocked to see how well it performs
it is 4 ultramp
I have always loved HTC phones, ever since the evo came out. I have owned a sensation and a mytouch and have now decided to upgrade to the new one M8!
Im not a professional photographer but I do like nice pictures.
The 4MP seems like a big turn off D::
S5 or M8? I cant decide D:
M8 , you will not regret it .
Aren't they Ultra Pixels, not just Mega Pixels??
they are a Mega Pixels , but bigger than the ordinary pixels .
If u were using Samsung before, take the S5 ! It is maybe another class of design, but you will be impressed by its performing. Probably its not
surpassable this year again.
As an added bonus, more pictures can fit in an SD card too!
how in the world did you people get your hands on it!?!?!?!
Because it is going on sale today itself, I think that is why there were so many leaks, cos HTC already had given away devices to carriers and reviewers so that when they launch it you can get it immediately rather than having to wait months. Kudos to HTC.
cause they are reviewers. They get units ahead of the official launch. They can't talk about it until the embargo lifts which was obviously today.
Most press got their review unit at least a week ago.
Great work as always Michael Fisher and PocketNow. Very informative and in depth review.
Htc m8 legendary phone❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
By far the best phone reviewer on RUclips.
The Sony Xperia Z2 is probably the most well rounded then, it's got a good enough camera, beautiful design as well. Plus it's waterproof as a bonus
Looks like HTC did it again
At 01:35, what is the circle icon to the right of the weather widget?
So just cause the camera is good but not great this phone sucks ? People are so spoiled , do you realize the the technology in this phone ? Fuck a camera it's has the best specs out right now for a flagship , the design , the software & hardware are perfect , just cause of a camera ya can't be serious , this phone is 10 times better than a galaxy I have an s4 right now ya buggin
***** exactly to me it doesn't matter , I'm grateful enough these companies put what they put inside of these devices
Ivan Batista I'm fine with the 4mpx on my M7 because I don't use it for serious photos. Snapping a pic of something funny on the street and uploading to social media etc. Anyone who wants good photos should grab a real camera not a smartphone.
EnhancedNightmare Lmfao exaaaactly I don't get it
S5 and Z2 is faster with superior better camera. I don't know crack pipe you're on.
***** If you get an S5 you're on a crackpipe your upgrading to what , like an iPhone 5 & 5S & who buys xperias..............
That's it! I'm upgrading to the HTC ONE M8 as soon as it's available! Great job HTC! BEST SMARTPHONE FOR 2014, I MO!
0:34, get a nose itch Michael? lol
Hahahaha
Lol
I've had the HTC one m8 since the day after the press release and I love it
I'm getting this on Wednesday. :)
No one gives a fuck.
John Smith No one gives a fuck that you don't give a fuck.
Axel Norén Awesome bitch.
THE AWESOME EXPLORER Disability allowance? Haha xD
Some of the sensors in last year's One's were ST VD6869's that were in short supply and the rest were Omnivision's OV4688's. This M8 has the same sensor as some of last years units, OV4688. So HTC informed you somewhat correctly.
love the design, the sd slot, the storage but that camera is a deal braker sorry HTC im staying with samsung
Yeah what's up with that weak camera.
Yea me too mate,,,,, my last 3 phones were samsung manufactured and I really want to try something different this time which was suppose to be the m8. But that camera really is a deal breaker for me. This sucks!
Lamin Kamara try a phone by kyocera they are really good
just because one htc is bad ( or the camera) doesnt mean all are look some more up
go with the LG G3 ... that phone is freakin amazing. Screw Samsung
Wait you have a review already? Its only been half an hour since the launch event...
Oh man. All they had to do was bump the camera a little. 8mp and it would have been almost perfect. Why, HTC? Still a great device, though.
i once read something like that they can't fit a sensor with higher mp because of the bigger pixels there is no space
berfu91 I suppose that could be the case. It certainly makes sense. But if that is the reason, then just give me regular pixels because I honestly don't see where the Ultra Pixels are really paying off, and from what I have read, neither do the reviewers.
***** hes right if the mp sensor would be bigger the size would also be bigger as well
i'll will be getting it. just also bummed about the camera pixels
Great review on a great device. I take lots of pics so the 4 mega pixel is a no go for me wish it would have been at least an 8 mega pixel
Still 4 pixels, but the pixels are bigger and let more light in. So it's still different to a 4 'megapixel'.
Z2 it is. Z2>M8>S5.
I got mine in gun metal gray from Verizon.
It's my first smart phone and love it.
Waiting for my UAG "Ice" case (the case is see through to show off the ONE).
I was going to get that same case if I got the one, lemme know how it works!
Anyone else think they had that house party just to try zoe?
I've had the m8 for about two weeks . I love it !!!! Movies are awesome beautiful picture loud clear sound . Grate battery life . I have no complaints about the camera I enjoy it, lots of choices to make on it . Can't go wrong with this phone .
Whenever I read htc one m8 I read it as "htc one mate"
I'm really thinking about getting the phone soon, the features are amazing and the over all quality of the phone is great.
Berty Basset lol. Agree
Sorry for the yelling I was upset. Haha but seriously I've taken some amazing pics. If people didn't know what phone it came from all they would say is holy crap those look incredible.
Derrick Bishop agree 4mp ultrapixel they say is not as bad as what they think it is.
honestly if you didnt have it all in caps, i would of just skimmed over your comment. but thanks for this - honestly, im not a photographer but i would like a camera that takes nice pics when needed. and from the reviews im seeing, its not that great. i think ppl need to try out the camera before making assumptions. will be trying the camera out in the store soon.
What's the widget on top at 3:33? It's like a dashboard with different icons.
I like the old design better
i have my m8 for 3mos and i am loving it so far.
sony xperia z2 is better than all new htc one
Yes yes ... Whatever
I think Sony could have made the Perfect Smartphone, If only the Z2 had had a 32GB memory (Apps can't be saved on external storage). It would have been Perfect.
Alejandro Moya Apps can be saved on external memory.
my biggest complaint about htc one is the camera the z2 camera is worse. megapixels do matter but its not the only thing. the stabilization is terrible on the z2
psilocybemusashi and the overheating... damn the overheating is terrible
I am seriously thinking about jumping from my Moto X to the the HTC One M8. Michael's sharp review has pushed me further toward taking the leap. Question is, should I indulge myself. I don't have a lover to be with on those dark, lonely nights, so maybe I should go for it!
It's not 4 megapixels it's 4 ultrapixels which equals 8 megapixels
Oh lord.
ummm
*sign* 😔
Great Text, perfect sound, nice narrative. These reviews of yours is way better than the alternatives. Keep it up (please)! Nice work!
2600mah none removalbe battery no thanks ill pass
I never got the HTC one 2013 because I got the s4 first. Now I'm surely getting this one for an upgrade. Yay excited.
Who's Chou!!!???
ImagineCraft7 Is the CEO of HTC
www.engadget.com/2014/03/26/htc-ceo-peter-chou-interview/
Andrew Hall Oh... well that explains everything!! But still the article does say to me that he did try as hard as he could to perfect this phone.
ImagineCraft7 With that said, that makes this all the more unimaginable how you can duplicate the same camera nobody liked from the previous device. You paid close attention to detail with materials and design but said to hell with the camera...*_smh_*
I think the phone is amazing HTC is making good things come to life looking forward to there future tech
So HTC had the highest rated phone of 2013 and yet the company is in the red financially.... And they did it again with this phone??!! Oops, looks like another phone the reviewers love yet no one will buy. As far as the phone... All I can say is meh.... More of the same ol'
agreed. m8 not impressed. s5 is also not impressive. Z2 is the only one that is worth it. let's see how G3 does.
Z2 is the phone to own. period.
Amir Amran nope that would be the oppo find 7
Reviewers and tech blogs praised the htc one like crazy yet I never saw one in the wild. It's a tough market and I doubt that this year's version will do any better than the last.
they used it for a day or two then they put a review out. thats why.
I own Htc one M7. It's a disappointment. Boomsound sounds great but not as loud as they advertise. Ultra pixel is good in low light but the pictures so noisy to the point that I can only view on the phone. Buttons layout is weird and uncomfortable. It takes forever to charge. And it took me 7 months to get Kitkat.
they should have make the gesture features only work if the sensor on the earpiece is not covered since, when it's covered most of the time when it's in your pocket. whereas not on your hands/on a table instead of depending on motion
oops, they've done it again.
Michael does, by far, the best reviews. Thanks!
I own a computer who wants to sit there glued to the internet on their phone?
MrTimmsy1986
go back to bed gramps.
greenrolaids Holy shit dude....not everybody sits on their phones 24/7. At least he has a life and gets away from his phone every so often.
Fuck this generation, man.
greenrolaids i am 26 you bellend and work for o2 and android as a software developer you go to bed bloody spastic *yawn*
going to pick up my new HTC M8 today
Really looking forward to owning this phone!!!! Can't wait!!!!
I cant decide if i want this or try to wait and see what goes on with the note 4.
