    "One device is a product of an Android juggernaut, a fourth-generation powerhouse from a take-no-prisoners Goliath that essentially owns the Google-powered smartphone space. The other is a last-ditch effort to save its creator from certain destruction, a product forged from that peculiar mixture of desperation and determination that sometimes begets pure art."
    That's a pretty pretentious way of putting a smartphone comparison, but it's how we kicked off last year's HTC One (M7) vs Galaxy S 4 comparison video. The interesting thing is, if you change "fourth-generation" to "fifth-generation" and tone down the HTC FUD a tad, that paragraph applies just as much to the HTC One M8 and the Samsung Galaxy S 5 -- the top two contenders for Android superphone of the season here in the States.
    We've already reviewed the HTC One M8 and given it one of the highest review scores we've ever bestowed on a smartphone. Next week, we'll be following that up with a full review of the AT&T Galaxy S5 we unboxed a few days ago. Until then, we're doing our best to answer this month's hottest-burning question in mobile tech: HTC One or Galaxy S5? Watch our comparison to find out what the answer is for you, then let us know which one you're going for in the comments below.

    I'm completely uninterested in any of these devices, but I would gladly sit here and watch this review 3 times in a row, Michael's vocabulary richness, diction and tone, added to the great video and audio editing makes for an extremely enjoyable 11 minutes, good job.

    Outstanding unbiased review the boom sound introduction as 'game over' was good seriously the best speaker quality not just loud but rich quality.
    I was expecting better wifi reception on S5. Both the devices are good I would go for HTC one m8 but really hope HTC should change the camera with a normal 13MP or 16MP for their M9.

      Michael Fisher has to be one of the best at producing tech videos here on RUclips, right there with MKBHD in terms of quality and originality, and with a radio voice that just grabs you by the ears, lol! Seriously Michael, I very much admire your work both written and filmed, and I couldn't imagine my RUclips sub box or my RSS feed without it!

      skillz1855 the HTC thunderbolt I got still performs better than the galaxy s5 I got last year did after 3 months. I finally just got the m8. Oh my goodness, thank god. My guess is that everything will still work way better after three months. For real, the motion sensing and half the other stuff absolutely would not function but once like every 15 attempts! Sorry. HTC all the way.

    I'm more than happy with my M8, I find the camera to be the best on a phone that I've had and I've just come from a Note 3. Besides, if anyone is THAT serious about photography then they should buy a proper DSLR camera. But pretty much every modern phone camera is good enough for a quick photo.

      Thanks for this great video comparison; if you would, I have a question for you: I don't buy phone's more than every 3 years because of finances. This means I need a phone that will last long, given good care. In the past, I have found HTC phones to be sturdy in hardware and stable in software which makes we want to stick with them. But as I approach buying a new phone this month, I am attracted to the Note 3 for its screen, replaceable battery, and streaming features. Do you think that Samsung phones have the same longevity that I have found in HTC? Thanks so much.

    Love my M8 and the features. I also have a Note 3 with some of the features that differentiate the two devices. I find most of the Samsung's other features go unused quite often. Either way both are great devices, but the M8 is clearly my choice here.

      ***** Meanwhile like the first reply says. People like using those features in the real world. HTC just does less so it's a little smoother. The S5 is still way snappy and fast. Plus you can disable the "OPTIONAL" features and even out the speed even more.
      Try again?

    Excellent (and very fair) comparison. I'm extremely pleased with my choice in getting the HTC One (M8). It is, by far, the absolute best smart phone I've laid hands on. I had a Samsung GS2 E4gT which was great for it's time but anymore I'm just not a fan of Samsung's "throw every feature in and see what sticks" modus operandi. I do own a Note 8 and love it for what it is but just wouldn't want something like it in a phone sized device. Keep up the great work, I always look forward to your next video (all of Pocketnow, not just MFs)!

    • @7duke77
      @7duke77 10 лет назад +1

      Alex D'Angelo I wasn't comparing them, I was establishing the fact that I'm not a Samsung hater since I've owned (and still own) their devices. It was an effort to make it clear that I like Samsung, I just don't like their current software.

      I sure hope it was worth the battery in the HTC One M8 not being user-removable, I read it is rather difficult to even replace the battery on that model (2/10 on iFixit)

    I own an HTC One M7 and none compel me to upgrade.
    Although, if I were to choose : One M8 will be my bit, here's why:
    The question here is mainly the CAMERA.
    HTC One M8 is a phone capable of taking pictures in every situation, while S5 couldn't, especially in the low light. which is very important coz phones are supposed to be that: allowing you to take picture whenever you want.
    Personally, M8 will allow me to take good pictures at those hangouts usually at restaurants and other dim indoor locale. If I want to go on a photography spree and want high resolution detailed pictures (which are actually preplanned events), I would obviously take a proper Camera.
    I am very optimistic that Devs or HTC itself will implement the Bokeh effect properly soon. The good thing is the second Camera continues to capture Depth info on every picture automatically.
    While Bokeh effect on Galaxy S5 will be mostly unused coz in S5 as you need to start that mode before capturing that means you should know when to take a bokeh picture which is mostly never the case. You do those settings afterwards and that's why HTC Dual Camera is a Good idea.
    HTC Camera Software, HTC Zoe and the literary best Gallery Experience is what makes it a very useful and compelling package to me.
    BOTTOMLINE:
    HTC Hardware Design, and more finished RELIABLE software features like BlinkFeed and the entire Design are all much better than Samsung which makes HTC a more useful phone.
    Also, HTC's deal with FitBit and dedicated Motion Processor makes it a better fitness Phone.

    One of the better articulated comparisons I've seen. It was fair and balanced. This should be used to inform the average consumer of which option to go with. In my opinion though, the Galaxy S series has sadly degenerated into a stale and unimaginative brand. Conversely, ***** has shown great signs of maturity over the years with their new design approach and revamping of Sense.

      i agree that this review should be used for the average consumer. very unbiased and informative. but like the reviewer states u should make your choice based on how you gonna use the the two phones. thats why i'll go with the S5. (removable battery). better croping of camera pics. and many of the added features like (multitasking). p.s for those who want am/fm radio, there are apps for that on both the phones. oh as far as design my otterbox is all silicon and heavy polycarbonates ..lol i won't know the difference on either of the phones. one thing that the reviewer fail to mension was the icon buttons on the screen for the M8. (annoying).

    If the Galaxy S5 had speakers on the front equivalent or better to the HTC One. All reviewers would say the Galaxy S5 is better. The Camera is better, it has a lot more features, fingerprint scanner, water resistant, and it's still stylish. I have the M8 now and I will be getting the S5 in a couple of days. Only because of the lack of quality in the Camera, don't get me wrong. The M8 has a good camera, but when you compare it to the S5 it literally destroys this camera. The only thing I will miss on this phone is Sense6 and the boomsound speakers. The aluminum body doesn't really matter because you'll always have a case on it and eventually it won't even cross your mind that it has an aluminum body. TouchWiz was definitely a little laggy on my old GS4, so hopefully the updated TouchWiz and the updated processor really gets rid of the lag. Hopefully the s5 will be a great phone when I use it. I don't necessarily not like the M8, I just want a better camera. I'm not a guy who owns a camera so the one on my smart phone is all I have. I recommend both of these phones to anyone. But it really comes down to the cameras and what Ui you like better. Also I guess the speakers too. But honestly, everyone uses headphones these days.

    Go for the HTC one m8 if you care about fashion statement! If you only care about the specs on a paper and likes to show off the heartbeat sender or finger print to your friends and don't care about looks go for the Samsung. One is for premium users who wants a good beautiful phone, the other is for geeks who likes to show off their tech.

    • @KooKooKaller
      @KooKooKaller 10 лет назад +4

      Wow, excuse me for wanting a phone with more features over wanting a phone that looks cool. I'll admit, the M8 looks sexy as hell and it may run smoother, but once you get past that, there's not much else. Keep in mind, I'm not trashing M8 users here, to each their own. But IMO features > looks.

    • @Rotasu_
      @Rotasu_ 10 лет назад

      I hope you also know One M8 performs much better than S5's touchwiz considering I used Touchwiz and was not even impressed, it is too damn laggy and the response on it has such a delay it's frustrating. I'm getting One M8 very soon and glad I made the right choice in choosing a much more well built phone than the S5. Overall S5 is only a beast on the camera and display to some, but M8 has much better premium features that I can use rather than caring about all the app features S5 has.

      In my opinion, HTC not only looks better (it gets constant attention when I pull it out), but it's polished, and just works for everything you will actually use it for in your daily life and then some. The Samsung Galaxy is loaded with features, but it's mostly gimmicks that are great to show off the phone to friends but aren't actually things you actually use yourself.

    There are a lot of people who've simply become anti-samsung. To downrate a phone for having things you aren't going to use is odd to me, as every phone has those. They're options, not requirements. The only negative I really have to say in regards to the HTC one's software is that the gallery app should be simplified. It seems jumbled and confusing. I own both phones by the way, and they're both great.

      People think Samsung is the new Apple. Their advertising has propelled them into the #1 spot, not to mention how lucky they were to be the OEM chosen for the update 4.0.0 in the Nexus line.
      The S3 was declared the Android King when 4.0 came around. The year after the One was declared King but its numbers weren't even close to the S4 sales.
      The only reason I support HTC right now is because out of all the OEMs left they are the only ones left dedicated to phones only that haven't gone bankrupt. Nokia...bought by Windows. Motorola...owned by Lenovo. Blackberry is going under...fast. Samsung is in the processor, fridge, PC, screen, laptop, etc business. Same with LG. And they both sit on enormous amounts of money to advertise even if their phones are relatively worse. I root for the under-dog especially if they deserve it.
      The M8 fits my life-style better. I'm a media junky. And I love it. The camera sucks balls though lol.

    • @rocklover3300

      Mathu Sivakumar Exactly! HTC's still getting better even when they're losing. Too bad they don't have much money to spend on advertising to rival Samsung's marketing machine. Though right now they're, for the first time, running a pretty good campaign. HTC's products scream "premium". You just hold the One in your hand and it screams quality, design, performance. They're like the Mercedes Benz of phones

      The light bulb has finally shined, huh? Got the One M8 a week ago and it's great. My friend from uni got the iPhone 6 and we compared both of their designs and even she noticed the two lines on the back both of the phones had. And considering that the M8 was released first we all know whom copied who lol. She was then showing off the fingerprint scanner to the rest of our friends and I just thought about mentioning how Apple has only finally fitted a HD display on their iPhone 6 and a 4.7 inch screen size (like my old One X lel) after Android has had this for years making it a mid range feature nowadays, but I didn't want to start an unnecessary argument.

      Just becuase it isn't HD doesn't mean it's not good, you have to remember that, for example on iPhone 5s, it's 620p on a small screen, which is pretty much exactly the same as 1080p on a 6 inch display phablet, it's not the resolution that matters, it's the pixel density that does

  • @amrcn_rebel3933

    The HTC m8 is the greatest phone ever constructed to date. I own one I should know. I've also owned every iphone , every galaxy, the z1, and the nexus 5. If you like iphones you will love its responsiveness and reliability. If you love stock android than sense 6 adds just enough to make it better without slowing it down. For all those people who buy a galaxy to be cool....stop trying to fit in because its cool to have a galaxy. Companies fail to innovate when millions if people buy their products just because they print their name on it. And as for the camera. The m8 has a great camera. Everyone has something bad to say because a professional photographer would never use it. But guess what....a professional photographer isn't going to be using their phone to take pictures. And 99.9% of you aren't photographers. The m8 is more than sufficient for the selfies and pics of friends and kids everyone uploads to Facebook. I'm biased yes but I have also owned everything so I can state my opinion because of hands on experience. Not just hearsay and popularity at school.

    I personally thnik that : If the HTC one gets a new model m9 for instance , this device could have 3GB ram , 2.5 ghz snapdragon 801 and a NEW camera of 8 ultra pixels or 13 ultrapixels , then this would be one of the Few "Perfect" devices!
    To me the m8 is stylish , a tanky strong THING !! , its got great audio , it has a decent battery , good screen , great and simple menu .... if HTC decides to give their phone a great and preferable camera , their phone becomes ultimatley the best android device out there , i hope i am not making a mistake for buying the One Plus one and waiting for HTC`s newer model the (probably m9) If HTC decides to add in a water / dust resistance as an addition to all the improvements i stated , than that would just be waay too AWESOME :)

    I've had my M8 for about a month now. I couldn't be more pleased. I was a Samsung fan boy for years but I'm also a big fan of change/innovation. Physically, the S5 and it's predecessor (which I had, S4) look the same. The finger print reader on the S5 is incredibly buggy. In my testing, it works about 50% of the time. USB 3 would be an awesome feature but not a deal breaker for the M8. As the review states, the fluidity of the M8 is what sells it. The aluminum design and boom sound are huge. Even using it for skype conferences is a much more refined experience as you can actually hear the person on the other side. The camera snaps incredibly fast. No, you're not going to take 5000x3000 resolution images. Lets be honest, if you want an awesome "camera phone", go buy the Lumia 1020. I love the built in gestures. The IR blaster in the power button is really good placement.

    I like the flat feel of my phones. My first smart phone was an iphone 3Gs. I hated the round back as it was too slippery in my hand. This white S5 looks really nice. The lag on just a couple of the apps wouldn't bother me. The speakers would be nice but not worth going for the M8. I'm a Note guy all the way but if I had to pick, S5 all day long. Great review, thanks.

    • @DanteSolablood
      @DanteSolablood 10 лет назад +3

      Just to be fair, I do have to state that the lag they mentioned wasn't on "just a couple of apps", it's universal because it's caused by switching from one app to another. This problem is caused by Touchwiz and not the hardware, worse still the S5 has a locked bootloader so you're stuck with the laggy Android skin.

    • @BabyHoldingGun
      @BabyHoldingGun 10 лет назад

      Danté Solablood True, but Sense (HTC's version of "touchwiz", to keep it simple) does the same thing, unless you get the Google play edition which gives you ALL 2GB of RAM.

      Danté Solablood It's really not that laggy mostly noticeable in the gallery.

      Danté Solablood I have 5 Samsung devices from the Note 1, 8, 10.1 (2014) and 10.1 Tab 3. It doesn't bother me that much. I think we are all getting overly spolied. If the device was slow within apps I would agree with you. You can root the S5 using Chainfire's CF-Root, clean it up, toss Nova launcher and been done with touchwiz. If there's something small you don't like with an Android phone, fix it. But again, a stock touchwiz with it's small lag in not that bad. I really think 90% of the people never even used touchwiz and are just regurgitating what they hear. It's not so bad for all you're getting.

    • @IPPredators
      @IPPredators 10 лет назад

      ***** I bet you have a S5, right? These reviews are judging the little lag over a nexus device that come with a nothing on it. It's fast and snappy. Once you start loading it up with widgets, apps and stuff, it slows down. I have the first Nexus 7. Fast as hell but plain out of the box.

    HTC advantages are the ones regular people use more often (Low light pics, how it looks, how it sounds, how it calls, blinkfeed and the UI). Samsung's advantages are ones that somebody might use (fingerprint, dropped in water,changing batteries, wallpaper photos, zoomed in photos, and straight in light sources). HTC can get a heart rate app.

    Attention Michael Fisher, I have discovered something very important about this camera that people need to know and especially you reviewers. There is a supposed protective film that comes on the main camera lens. It's really prone to scratching however it can be removed but most importantly once removed it increases the resolution dramatically. We've been discussing this in the HTC M8 group on Google social. Everyone that's removed it says the same thing. It makes it look just as good as the s5 mega pixel shooter. It normally cast a slight haze that's very notice when it's removed. My lens looked really scratched after using alcohol some use toothpaste or nail polish remover and with a little elbow grease you can see it come off. As I say the effects are irrefutable and this needs a video. Thanks Chris Enlightened.

      If you don't mind metal, the M8 is the better phone in many ways. That was the point of the article. Yes the S5 has the higher resolution camera, but if you're going to be taking pics at night you'll be better off with the better lowlight capabilities of the M8 etc.

      Danté Solablood So better pictures in night scene would made you buy m8 over s5, check your doctor. I will use my phone 95% during the day, because i sleep over the night.

    I never did like reading text on a super AMOLED screen, either on the GS3 and the Lumia 928. Black text on a white background appeared blurry and pixelated, even though pictures looked great. Even my HTC Rezound with a 4.3" 720p screen looked super-crisp in comparison. I'd go with the M8 over the GS5 for that reason alone.

      Khemistry The new Samsung phone has a texture that resembles a band-aid, which is hardly what I'd consider stellar design. Had they gone with the faux-leather look, it would have looked like more premium/professional of a device. Granted, the IP67 rating is a huge plus in their favor and being able to confidently take underwater photos on occasion should be seen as a plus. The addition of so many software features -- while they do add many good (as well as several unnecessary) capabilities to the device -- is shown to slow the phone down in responsiveness when compared to stock Android or HTC's less feature-heavy Sense interface.
      Both of Däne Fjordlùnd's points are valid here, especially if looking at the aesthetics of the Samsung Galaxy S5, rather than the water resistance. The Touchwiz point is also valid, regardless of the device. HTC Sense will likely be a little slower than Stock Android but to negligible effect, as opposed to Samsung's Touchwiz. The reality of the situation is that is the price you pay for more software features -- wanted or not.
      In the end, Däne Fjordlùnd, both the Galaxy S5 and the HTC One M8 have or will have a Google Play Edition. At that point, your choice will be between the hardware: either Samsung's water-resistant device with a phenomenal camera or HTC's beautiful metal device with a decent camera and tremendous front-facing speakers. Another point to consider is that HTC is making a lot of their Sense software features available via the Google Play Store, so you can download certain Sense features that you may want, such as the TV Remote software and their photo editor. This is still to be determined for Samsung's GPE.

      Khemistry Let me give you a list of the "features" that I have never touched since owning an SIII for 2 years. Samsung Apps, Video, Photos, Music Hub, Rhapsody, Paper Artist, Music, S Voice, S Suggest, Kies Air, Drop Box, S Memo, Voice Recorder, VPN Client, Media Hub, and More Services. Not to mention the apps that your service provider tacks on like a hotspot that is probably used once or twice in a year. I agree with Däne Fjordlùnd in that Samsung just tacks on too many things onto the device that its just frustrating.

      ***** Try again.
      How is a point based of false info and mixing it in with personal preference something that is valid?????
      What someone likes in a material...More so when it comes to these phones..."looks". Has nothing to do with "build quality".
      With the way you try using long descriptive messages showing you know better one would think you that and what I am about to explain.
      While the S5 is not the best looking phone around only online haters complain so much about it. And while it's not the most aesthetically pleasing it is about the most durable, practical, and ergonomic. That perforated soft touch material feels great to the touch. And in person to most looks more than good enough. Just more simple. As well combined with it's thinner size is more comfortable to hold for most. Especially prolonged.
      And the Poly Carbonate overall more durable. Which adding that in makes it much more practical as well. Just not as visually appealing to everyone. Mostly complained about by people online.
      Samsung puts more focus into what things do for you and some into how they look.
      And to say Touchwiz is bogged down and Sense is smooth is to say that Android is bogged down and IOS is smooth. Touchwiz is still fast and zippy. And it offers many options that cater to the widest array of people that others do not offer. And most are optional. And most people in reality use at least one to a few. Plus most are OPTIONAL. You can disable a good few and gain back those lost tiny seconds.
      Plus way more goes into the price than just the software and both cost about the same or similar.
      While overall the S5 has a good bit more cost into it. Like the display and camera. USB 3.0. Bigger battery. Testing to get it that IP67. Slightly better chip. Sensors. So forth.
      And again the display and camera alone make up much more cost in the S5 compared to most other devices out there.

      Absolutely wasted gimmicky software which slows the phone down, lags. Samsung hasn't learnt from their mistakes. I'll take a punt here next year Samsung won't use Plastic and reduce gimmicky software. M8 is so smooth and works flawlessly.

      why does it suck? I know the trend now a days is hate on Samsung because of their status and success...but why does the s5 suck....sure the design or material is nothing like the m8 or the z2 (which is the best phone of the bunch) but apart from that its a solid feel phone, its camera is phenomenal, water resistance is a nice ad - on, it has the best multitasking features of any device thanks to multi window, it has the best display plus removable battery......all in all its a top tier device and i find no regret in buying this phone along with my xperia z2 which im still waiting for.

    I recently bought the HTC One M8 and I came from an s3. It was a tough choice to switch to an HTC smartphone coming from a Samsung but I'm glad I did. I love this phone so much. I almost got the s5 because I thought switching to sense from touchwiz and also not having a home button would be hard. After spending a few days with this phone I'm happy I chose the HTC one. There are a few features I miss from the s3 but this phone is definitely worth the switch from any smartphone. I have heard many reviewers say that they don't like touchwiz but they love sense and now I understand why. I actually liked touchwiz but sense is so much more smooth and responsive. I'm not sure if I'll be going to a Samsung smartphone anytime soon.

    personally, i just bought the samsung s5, what i have done to it is, bought a slim leather cover with a half screen window to check texts and accept calls. so the back of either of the phones does not apply to me, the door to keep the usb port, water and pocket lint resistant is awesome. the speakers on the htc, aswell, i love music but i am using head or earphones, when listen to music in open airspace i am going to use my music angle, ( small potable speaker ), so it really came down to the camera, being able to remove the battery, and the speed of the software by 0.1 does not matter to me aswell, but i am very open to querks. thats my opinion on it.

    I bought the S5. While the M8 is gorgeous, the plastic can take more of a beating, and doesn't scratch as easily. I value vibrant colors, and they can always be toned down. I also like that the S5 can go brighter or dimmer. Is there a difference between micro and nano sims besides the size? In terms of the camera, I prefer higher resolution and better daytime performance vs. lowlight performance, and the S5 is no slouch in low light, you probably wouldn't notice the difference unless they were side by side. I like the IP67 as a little insurance, I like the removable battery which lasts a full waking day I might add, I actually use the finger print sensor, etc etc. I'm very happy with my S5.
